The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    A) Salah+5.5 attacking defender or Mane+Jones(dont like Jones 0 attacking threat)

How did Firmino play? Saw that he got a goal and assist but was he involved in the majority of the plays? or did he just get lucky?

And also how did Kane play?

Mark's problem is his total and complete commitment to a misfiring Kane whilst his supporting cast are scoring points. Surely the switch is a no brainer until the time comes where Kane once again has his scoring boots on. Last season I had exactly the same issue with Ibra where he was doing everything but score. I stubbornly stuck by him and it cost me big time.

Not as simple as you make it sound. By the time he's got his scoring boots on and been brought back in - points will have been missed out on.

I only say it out of bad experience last season. The difference is, with United last season there were no midfield options, with Spurs there is Alli or Eriksen.

Captain Experience. I had Kane last season for the first few weeks too. He was a let down. I bought him a few weeks later again and he was sensational. His August returns are nothing to do with a hoodoo, they are related to his lack of sharpness after a summer away.

Due to the uncertainty of Wembley / off field chatter / fixtures ( and it was August), I was reluctant to gamble (most expensive) on Kane at the start but knew that at any point I would have to change everything (started with lukaku, Jesus & mounie) to bring him in. Now, I'm grateful that his price is going to drop and it will be easier to bring him when I have too!

Sigurdsson continues to drop. If he gets to 8.3 or 8.2 before their fixtures get better, I am going to get him. I might get him anyway for KDB actually.....

Asensio to make it even from FK. Joy to watch.

        People selling Salah after GW2...
The guy had 5 shots inside the box in the first game, came on in the second game and again almost scored, he had a fantastic pre-season, there was absolute no stat in the first 2 games or throughout the pre-season, that would make his sale justifiable, only the fact he was put on the bench to rest for the upcoming CL qualifying game, which wasn't that unlikely to happen anyway.
Considering the fact Liverpool's form against top clubs is amazing and the fact Arsenal's defence is in shambles is enough for me to call it the stupidest knee-jerk of the season so far.

...so be careful what you're doing.

Your only as good as your last game.

Kane will drop probably by .2 this week but will almost undoubtedly will be a golden contender especially with the stats he's posting ATM.

But were you watching those games? His finishing is very poor, no two ways about it. Squandered two golden chances today, one he absolutely had to score. Finished on his third time. Mané or Firm with those chances walk away with a hattie imo.

Best thing he did today was his assist for Studge, that was sublime.

            Did you watch the game?

Mané with a guilt edge chance which he didn't put away. Was a relatively easy finish but he fluffed it.

Yes indeed and I saw that, should have done better. But at least he forced somewhat of a save from Cech's hand instead of Salah who shot straight into his body.

Same in the Palace match and the Watford match (Watford especially).

What about his goal? Many players would have bottled that chance

So he needs 3 sitters to score one? Don't think many would have bottled that chance tbh.

Not many players can control the ball at pace from the half way line like that. I was impressed by his composure from that position.

It was a good finish, but I expect a lot to score that. If he's going to have defences like Arsenal vomit up chances to him, he'll do fine. He's one of the fastest players in the league and they gave him ridiculous space. In games where opportunities are a little tougher to come by, I think a better finisher like Mané will shine.

His cross impressed me a lot. One of the nicest put in this season.

I know a certain FPL steal (back in the day when nailed) Walcott was bottling 4 out of 5 similar chances 🙂

Of course, but for FPL, I think, it's more important that he gets into those positions rather than he's just a prolific finisher that grabs his only chance of the game. He should've had a hattrick and with the amount of chances he gets, if he improves a pretty simple part of his game to improve, he's on a good way to outscore his teammates.

Unfortunately that aspect has always been part of his game.

I'm looking at him too, because he gets chances, but with the amount he misses it has negative impacts too. A goal and assists today but can't get any bonus points is a bit of a stinker. I also wonder if he's as important to the team as Mané or Firm, I'm not sure yet (too early to say for me).

I think Carragher marked him as more of a wide striker than a winger earlier, plays really far up and has more shots per game despite playing less minutes than his teammates. The the lack of baps is frustrating, but the potential is great so far.

Huge potential, no argument and at times took up a striker's position today. There's just something I can't trust about him yet. His goal today was well taken, I just want to see a few more nice finishes. So far it's been one defensive error which he capitalised on and finished well plus two tap in goals. If I see a few more nice finishes I'll be very interested.

So here are my ramblings from the GW.

Kane - I'm keeping Kane. Top player. Consistent in the main and underlying stats show that he should have scored. All this tells me that the sellers will regret getting rid.

Arsenal - Devoid of ideas, not playing for their manager. Even Sanchez looked beaten. While Wenger plays welcrap up front I can't see things changing. I'm just gonna avoid all of their players for the time being.

Pool - Toss a coin and buy one of mané, Salah or firmino. I fact just buy all three. I think that they will all be players who will have in excess of 170 points by the end of the season.

Man u - Pogba looks a different proposition this season. Shoots on site and clearly motivated. He's definitely on my watch list. I already have mkhi and seriously considering doubling up.

Man city - Pep. Ughhh. I mean seriously. He has arguably the best squad in the prem, of his own choosing and he makes them look average with his constant tactical tinkering/rotation. Staying clear my self.

Chelsea - Morata looks quality. Not sure where he fits though and with fixtures neither Lukaku nor Kane will be making way ATM.

Tammy Abraham to be one of the bargains of the season, 120-130 points easy imho. Not bed for 5.5.

Ritchie was another who impressed me this weekend. Will be keeping until a clearly better alternative arrives at 6.0.

With your views on City and Spurs, which I agree with, it would be daft of me to sell Mkhi, Pogba, Alli, Lukaku or Kane.
That means I have to lose Chicharito and Willian if I want one of the Liverpool players. The problem is, there aren't any lower-priced options that I really like at the moment.... Any ideas? (0.2 short of Abraham)

For now, yes, but be careful with overlooking Arsenal, they're a team of episodes (of brilliance and bottling, usually related to the importance of the games and the amount of pressure). I think the int. break came in the perfect time for them. It'll give a chance for Alexis to build up his fitness, he's only been posting selfies with his dogs for 3 straight weeks, the dressing room morale will be terrible after today, but with the international break ahead, it should improve once they return. Lacazette will be more used to the new enviroment and Wenger will have learnt his lesson about benching him and Koalsinac for Welbeck and Bellerin, nice fixtures also and they're known to be flat track bullies, when the pressure is low.

All of my starting 11 are away from home in the next gameweek. Some tough fixtures for my key players. Would it be a good time to use the free hit card or too early? (Obviously after internationals)
