The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

Hi Mark, we discussed in-site notifications 2 days ago and 2 people agreed! 🙂
I think it'd be a great addition to the site as you wouldn't have to check your mail if there are any replies on your comments. Seems pretty practical to me as you'd only have to have 1 tab open instead of 2. Also the notifications should be there by defualt, not vice versa (so check the box out, if you don't want a reply), because most of us are here for FPL related discussions rather than 1 liners, I imagine. 🙂

Stats from Eriksens two international matches (friday and today) :

      2 goals
      4 assists

Alli being suspended for next 3 UCL matches makes him a safer bet than Eriksen as Poch could rest or take him early before cl games

Alli should play all 90 mins giving him an extra 20 mins in 2-3 matches over Eriksen. (could be signifcant as spurs doesnt stop attacking until 90mins even if their leading by 2-3 goals)

Very torn between these 2 options.
      Any thoughts?

      1) cheer on Slovakia at Scotland's expense because they play England

      2) cheer on England because it helps Scotland then take a shower in disgust afterwards

I actually do prefer as many home nation sides to qualify as possible too. Makes it better tournament for media hype etc. Not same if its a Euro 2008 type thing

Scottish fans are something to behold at the WC. Even if Scotland do nothing we can be sure their fans will finish high up on the leader board.

That would be an amazing episode.
Imagine the high pitched Scouse accent as he tries to talk his way out of it
"Come on lads, I'm in here, she's well up for it. Let me go and I'll get you 2 season tickets to Old Traff ... Goodison Park ... Oh no. This won't work anymore will it?"

Can just see that CCTV shot of him in the cells with his head in his hands contemplating what he's going to say to Colleen when she has to pick him up from the station..

Change of system saw him benched vs City. Depends how Howe sets up if he'll play or not.

Jesus how English people and commentators are conceited. Comparing Slovakia to Malta lol

Always underestimating other teams and overpraising their ability. Cheers to exeptions.

I wonder if anyone here is captaining Alonso for GW4?

He scored 2 goals, was close to a hattie and kept a clean sheet last time Chelsea played Leicester... I have Kane (C) atm but seriously considering Alonso, especially if Kane doesn't score tonight

Any Swansea fans here that can shed some light on how Renato Sanches could affect Carroll?

Will TC still be a starter and could it actually benefit him?
