Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    On my WC

    Fabianki - Elliott

    Jones - Davies - Otamendi - Azpi - Ward

    Sterling - Silva - Richarlison - RLC - Carroll

    Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

Hoping to capitalise on City's form/fixtures over next few weeks then consider Coutinho for one of the City mids. Torn between my 6m-ish mid, prefer Richarlison on paper but fixtures are tough. May go with Ritchie or Shaq.

    Any thoughts?

Stick with Richarlison best 6m mid option. If you can find the funds go for salah over coutinho

      Looking decent.

I'd not go for Shaq, the guy always flatters to deceive each time I've owned him. Ritchie I own but one to watch - Shelvey was nabbing a lot of the set piece duties from him.

I think it's Choupers v Richarlison for that slot, and I'd be tempted by Richarlison to be honest if I was on WC though I will probably go for Choupers.

Lovelly, I like Richarlison as a third midfielder. Other than that I'd be looking at a plan to bring in Morata once available.

Yeah Morata will definitely be one to get in once he is back. What I might do for next 2 gameweeks is just play 5-2-3 which this setup allows me to do, then bring in Richarlison for their nice fixture in GW10.

Why don't you go with Cedric over Jones? Soton fixtures looks better.

    Can't catch a break. 🙂 Hoping it's just a "international injury." 😉

#NUFC winger Christian Atsu has withdrawn from #GHA upcoming World Cup qualifier against Uganda because of a problem with his calf.

      • 10 Years

Probably dude. Ritchie is the same.

Atsu was dropped after his last game for Ghana for Murphy, so maybe he's cried off sick for that reason?

Either way, hugely unlucky - I'll not be impressed if Ritchie is out long term as I've had Kun, RLC and Chalobah since my wildcard get injured in short order!

Maybe, but this around Atsu would only have one game for Ghana on 7th October, so would have a lot of time to come back to England. Don't think he would get dropped this time around. Let's hope he's OK to play in GW8 as I still have Morata, Chalobah to sort out. Mendy, Kun already replaced, hoping Jones stays fit. 🙂 Never had so many injuries at once. They just keep coming at me. 🙂

          Agreed! Again, I have Ritchie!

I have Chalobah as well dude, and RLC ineligible, so I will have no bench (Mbemba not playing, Krul fodder) for a second week in a row this GW as I'm not taking a -4 to sort out bench issues - only get -2 points if I do Chalobah -> Cork, for example.

With the Kun money I'll probably do Chalobah -to Choupers week after next (when Stoke's fixtures look OK post City) and go back to 3-4-3

No bench either. Didn't even mention RLC, he's also in my team. 🙂 -4 again this week for me, don't have time to sort them out slowly. Choupo is tempting, but like you say, after this GW.

            Cheers for your input, mate.

Ouch! I guess it has to be done - phased transfers tend to be the way if you don't have a WC and an injury crisis, with lesser team members (e.g. your Tom Carrolls) playing to make sure you have an xi!

              No worries!

Never take a -4 for a defender if you have someone else who can play - they require a clean sheet to give you a +2 profit, which is what you'd get baseline from playing a TC character anyway

Looking strong, dude. I like that a lot. Keep an eye on Atsu who has pulled out of Ghana squad "injured", but I suspecti t's probably an international injury. Can put him down to 4.5 bench fodder if so, though I'm assuming you're benching most weeks anyway, so I'd be tempted to just do that anyway.

    Looking at this Wildcard:

    Elliot - Fab
    Davies - Otamendi - Monreal - Ward - 4m
    Haz - Silva - Cout - Shaqiri - 4.5
    Kane - Jesus - Joselu

Flexible enough to play 3-4-3, 4-4-3, 4-3-3 with two of Shaq, Ward and Joselu rotating on form/fixtures.

Could downgrade Fab to 4m and change ward to Maguire if a stronger rotator needed. Thoughts?

Hey man. I think B is the best looking there - be tempted to do your Silva plan as well, though Coutinho is rising I believe and you have Ras and Jesus, so it might be a case of having Cout there. Don't forget that he and Liverpool tend to perform in the big games, it's the games v smaller sides they struggle in

    Fantasy Football needs regulating.

In play betting now along with manually manipulators.

Prem managers and players should have always been excluded.

I am looking into it, thank me in a few seasons.

    1. Bird Raymond
      • 12 Years

It sounds daft but there is probably something in this. Football betting laws are really strict e.g. players can't bet on any football, even games they aren't involved in. We play in mini-leagues for maybe a £20 buy in, prem players could have a £20k buy in and be in a position to help themselves win big sums.

      1. Fuchs Mane Kante
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

This is very true, most games including fpl are flawed for the simple reason of being able to create new teams each and every Gw.
This minipulates Gw rank which is detrimental to overall rank and alike.
Not to mention these goons with multiple teams and extra transfers for cash, i do like beating them though some weeks.

So what do we think of Arsenals fixtures? Bit of a mixed bag, I was looking at getting Bellerin in on a WC, the way he's been so far forward. but two ok always (Wat, Eve) then an alright home (Swa) and then the big boys (City, Spurs) could be a nice differential but very short term?....

    1. Individual
      • 10 Years

Had Bellers for 2 weeks - has been overlooked in favour of Kola but given me 7 more points. Happy to hold for next 3 which, as you say, are decent. I have Laca too as part of an ill-fated short term points grab for that BHA fixture just gone, who has a few more ? about him as I'm wondering whether I keep Mkhi and move him on to Jesus

I think we will be good for these next 3, with 2 clean sheets perhaps - we tend to have mini-renaissances against clubs like these coming up (we'll want revenge on wat; eve looking poor; we should be able to beat Swansea) before actually sinking into crisis again come the big games, which is when I will probably bail on one or both of my players

If Morata will be fit for next GW the decision between him and Jesus could be crucial on our wildcards. They both have very similar stats and very good run of fixtures but one could easily fire big hauls while the other blanks.

I was on Morata at first and then not only he got injured, but Aguero also had his taxi ride, which makes Jesus the lone striker for some time. Now I have Jesus and feel happy with him, but if Morata'll be passed fit for next weekend it is going to be difficult last minute decision.

And yes, there is an option to have them both, but I dont like to destroy the rest of my WC team.

    Elliot - Foster
    Kola - Otamendi - Clark - Ward
    Salah - Silva - Choupa
    Lukak - Kane - Firmino

    Fellaini - Mbemba- RLC

Firmino to Jesus for a hit? Waiting for an injury free Morata...
