Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    First WC draft team;

    Fabianksi Elliot
    Davies Otamendi Cedric Ward Rosenior
    Silva Coutinho Shaqiri Gross Carroll
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

    Any advice is much appreciated!

Eww Shaq. I'd be tempted to upgrade Otamendi to Walker and down Shaq to a 4.5 and go 4-3-3.

Meh Gross is alright, and good fixtures coming up. Any goals BHA score likely to go through him - 80% GI so far!
Rosenior, well you might as well have bench fodder - it's the battle of the oldies at RB for BHA, with his adversary Bruno 36!

      Silva to Sterling
      Lukaku to Jesus
      Gross to 4,5
should be enough to upgrade Roseior to Azpilicueta/ Alonso to play 4-3-3 or 5-2-3 sometimes .

no issues in the back, i actually can play four strong defenders, which leaves 6 players up fron to choose. my from 8 are:

    Silva, mkhi, gross,( ritchie,carroll)
    kane, laca, vardy

    3.0M in the bank

    should i:

1 - bring jesus for laca or vardy
    2 - bring sterling/sane for gross
3 - bring hazard for mkhi
4- save transfer and just play gross (EVE)

Not a wildcard but more of a long term plan, I don't see the value in premium defenders with no attacking threat so would rather rotate 3 x4.5-4 m Def's, with Jones and Davies playing more often than not unless poor fixtures. One marked with an asteroid, will have this by gw9

    Fabianski (Elliott)
    Davies Jones Ward (Clark *Dunk)
    Salah Silva *Sterling(Pogba) Brady (Chalobah)
    Kane Lukaku Vardy

The defenders I'll be rotating seem quite resolute, yet to get thrashed for example, sound like a plan?

Yeah decent. Newcastle, Brighton and Burnley will get clean sheets and are too well setup to get thrashed

My thoughts exactly, if it works it gives me advantage over those with the heavy defences cause I have an extra attacker who can contribute regularly

Well, it isn't. That's the point. The SAME algorithm is EQUALLY applied to ALL teams, regardless.

You may not like the algorithm, but it is bias blind.

Il have a cheeky rmt please lads

    Elliot Krul

    Alonso Davies Wimmer Naughton rosenior

    Eriksen Salah Mkhi RlC Carroll

    Kane Lukaku Joselu

    1ft, 1.6itb

I want a city player and Mkhi > silva seems sensible, but kaku>jesus makes getting haz easier if and when needed.

I expected more from joselu in all honesty but i guess i can hold him a while longer, maybe his 'goal' against pool might spark him into life a bit!

    Any input appreciated!

THE ABOVE ARTICLE confirms that the expected goal data is not ready and riddled with bugs.

WHY was it then used to advise people to captain Lukaku over Kane on Friday night in the captain sensible article?

At no point does it say there was anything wrong with the data - these will just be numbers easily obtainable, the bug fixing will probably be with presentation/useability. Take a chill pill

Not sure what to do with my team at the moment. I feel like there are players I've been patient with who are falling down the pecking order...

    Forster / Elliot
    Kola - Jones - Cedric - Mee - Suttner
    Alli - Salah - Lanzini - Car - RLC
    Kane - Lukaku - Rooney

Getting rid of Rooney very soon, Lanzini was brought back in following his return from injury. I clearly need City coverage. 2 FTs. Any tips from the pros?! Cheers all.
