Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 9

There may be one match remaining in Gameweek 8, but we’re already thinking ahead to the next set of fixtures with the launch of our latest Captain Poll.

After 56% of Fantasy Premier League managers earned just four points from their chosen captain at the weekend, many of us will be desperate for improved returns next time out.

Manchester City’s relentless attack is likely to occupy many Fantasy managers’ plans ahead of Burnley’s visit, given that Pep Guardiola’s troops have served up an incredible 28 goals this season, including 17 in their last three at the Etihad.

While the Clarets may have only shipped six goals, the underlying statistics suggest they have been fortunate, having conceded more shots than any other team.

Gabriel Jesus (10.7) produced a brace and netted maximum bonus points against Stoke on Saturday. Already more than 84,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have transferred in the six-goal Brazilian for the Clarets’ encounter.

But his pitch time remains a caveat – Saturday’s 62-minute outing was the longest he’s managed in front of his own fans this season.

Sergio Aguero (11.5)’s return to the bench against Stoke, after suffering a rib injury that has seen his ownership plummet to 7.4%, could reduce Jesus’ minutes further.

With the same number of goals as Jesus, as well as three assists, the Argentine looks set to garner attention, particularly if he proves his fitness with a Champions League appearance against Napoli midweek.

In total we have put forward six Sky Blues options for consideration, including a quartet of midfielders. Of these Raheem Sterling (8.1) may emerge with the most votes given his 15-point haul against Stoke on the back of two assists and a sixth goal of the season.

Sterling has tended to be rested for his side’s Champions League encounters, while being preserved for Premier League action, which goes in his favour. The England winger has made the first XI each time he has been available since Gameweek 3 and lasted the full 90 minutes on four occasions.

Unsurprisingly, Sterling is this week’s most popular transfer target, with more than 107,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Aguero’s return may threaten Leroy Sane (8.4)’s pitch time should he be fielded in tandem with Jesus. But this season the City winger has proved to be a more than capable impact man, having earned three double-digit FPL points hauls, scored four times and assisted a further three across his four starts and three substitute appearances.

City’s two chief creators 17.7% owned Kevin De Bruyne (10.0) and David Silva (8.5), who sits in 26.7% of teams, should also prosper in our poll. Both have started every league match so far and earned 11 assists between them, as well as a goal apiece.

The most likely challenger to City assets for the summit is set to be Romelu Lukaku (11.8), who travels to a Huddersfield Town side that has shipped seven in their last four, including four in their previous home encounter, against Spurs in Gameweek 6.

While the Belgian was restricted to just one shot at Anfield, he is likely to get more opportunities against the Terriers. Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool was the only time he has failed to score away from home in the league this season.

As well as Manchester United, another side to disappoint in Gameweek 8 was Chelsea, who lost 2-1 away to Crystal Palace.

A home tie with Watford this Saturday looks the perfect match for the Blues to bounce back, with their top scorer Alvaro Morata (10.2) likely to attract interest if he returns from injury for the midweek Champions League encounter with Roma. Six goals and two assists should ensure he earns more votes than team-mate Eden Hazard (10.6), who has yet to deliver an attacking return across his five appearances since his return.

Interest in Harry Kane (12.8) may be muted after he failed to break down Bournemouth’s defence at Wembley at the weekend.

His toils at Spurs’ temporary home – where he is yet to score in the league – is a major concern ahead of Liverpool’s visit and already more than 28,000 FPL managers have moved him out.

Yet Liverpool are unlikely to arrive at Wembley and put up a rearguard action. In addition, they have already conceded 11 times away from home, the joint highest along with Crystal Palace, West Ham and Stoke.

Wilfried Zaha (6.7), who scored against Chelsea on Saturday and proved inspirational as his side earned their first win of the season, is among the differential armband options.

Fielded as the central striker against the champions, Zaha makes a trip to Newcastle next. Despite showing resilience so far, only three teams have allowed more shots in home matches this season.

And Tammy Abraham (5.7) is another one to consider in light of his double for Swansea at home to Huddersfield.

The Chelsea loanee has claimed over 66,000 new owners as he entertains a Leicester City side that’s shipped seven goals in four road trips.

Encouragingly, Abraham has bagged 21 points in his last two at the Liberty Stadium.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 8 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

If Richarlison gets banned for 2 games, is it worth keeping and benching him for 2 weeks or rather get ChoupoMoting or any other mid for 2 weeks?

Good to go next game week? Thinking of (c) Lukaku or Jesus (if he had little CL gametime)

    Forster

    Davies Cédric Jones

    RLC Groß De Bruyne Sterling

    Jesus Lukaku Kane

    Bench

    Elliot Carroll Naughton Mbemba

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally I'd consider downgrading KDB and using the funds elsewhere, but not urgent

Jesus (C) is a good shout if his minutes are managed in CL. Otherwise I'm going Kane or Kaku

Hi gang. Haven't had time this week to read reports etc, so apologies for the quick query but:

    Has Clark been dropped?
Whats the deal with Duffy? Proper injury?
Is Bavies just suffering from a bug?

I may need a hut to fix my defence, and I hate taking hits for defenders

    1. rogerbarton

Clark dropped for Lejeune likely because he was away on international duty (Merino was also dropped/rested after being away with Spain U21s).

Lejeune played pretty well for the most part but gave away a ridiculous penalty which cost Newcastle the three points, so I'd imagine he might make way for Clark (who's been playing pretty well himself) against Palace.

Bavies apparently has a cold, so should be back for next week.

That's reassuring. That gives me three likely starting defenders, then. Enough to hold on the hit for now!

I posted something a little while back from an interview Rafa gave where he basically said Lejeune was doing very well in training and would be back in the first team soon. I'd say Clark has lost his place

Wait for the City game. I would be tempted to just save a transfer this week, see what is happening with City/Chelsea/Davies and just sort it out with a -4. Team is not that bad tbh. Hazard AND Sanchez was what hurt. You could downgrade them both next week and then do Quaner to whoever too. Defence is fine.

Hazard yes, Sanchez I would be more worried about. Away to a shocking Everton side could be an easy 10pts+. Want to here more about him and Ramsey with regards to injury. I have Hazard myself and will see how they play next week. Could do Hazard, Jesus and Vardy to Aguero Morata and 8.8 if I get super desperate.

Your team is good, just had a bad week thats all. I'd hold. You have 2 city already so you're not exposed there, Hazard is a good captaincy candidate next week and Sachez the standout for GW10 🙂 Save ft and see the lay of the land after the weekend and go from there.

Going to sell Dawson for GW10 and Leicester looks a direct replacement.

    Is Fuchs a good shout?

4.9 so probably the same price as Dawson as he is due a drop. Maguire seems an obvious option but Huth is back soon and Dragovic also in contention so some rotation will happen there. Fuchs has decent attacking returns and is a nostalgic pick from the 15/16 season.

Afternoon guys, haven't been on for a while as I couldn't even look at my team.
Any ideas as to what to do here? Im happy with my keepers.

    Dawson-Lascelles-Lowe-Simpson-4m
    Mkhit-Eriksen-Salah-Richarlison-Carroll
    Lukaku-Rooney-Kane
    2 FT
    0.2 in the bank.
I was thinking about Mkhit to Sterling, any other ideas?

I have both but thinking of leaving, certainly until viewing the CL games
kaku can have a run out against hudders and if he blanks would be difficult not to move him to kun/morata/jesus
but he gets that easy fixture to prove the haters wrong

Kane is frustrating but you know the week you sell him is the week he hatters

so in summary I would leave them alone and maybe consider your defence or roll the FT

Probably goes without saying, but you need some MCI attack in there somewhere.

      Mhki > Sterling/Silva

You could also consider using one of your FT's to go Kane > Jesus/Aguero. Leave that one up to you though.

      fixtures will make no difference
Jose is going to park the bus against any top 6 team, so there's still a decent chance of getting a CS and then if they do he'll get BAPs as a result more than likely

unless he gets injured he's the best defender to have right now imo

I'm worried about having no Chelsea cover, but hope it won't be a big issue. Also, Jesus's so essential in our ML, but I'd prefer to keep Kane and Kaku for now...

After GW10, I have to sort out my defence. Considering this move: Monreal > Trippier.
      * Hope Monreal's price won't fall and Trippier's one won't rise, because I have 0.0ITB.

How do I get more city attack into this front 6?

    Eriksen Coutinho Silva Brady
    Kane Lukaku

I don't have enough to upgrade Brady, and I know that as soon as I get Jesus in he'll be shunted right or dropped entirely and generally become a poor option. The "obvious" move would be Coutinho to Sterling but Couts is about to embark on a stellar run of fixtures and to be honest after BUR and wba are over its not exactly like City's are fabulous. Nice still, but not worth getting rid of Coutinho for. Eriksen is the top scoring mid in the game. What on Earth do I do??

But they cancel each other out as options. Every time something seems to put one or the other in favour, something changes. An inform, in position Jesus or Aguero is gold. The problem is, those situations don't last too long as we've seen so far this season.
