Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Monday

Two moments of quality emerged from Monday night’s Gameweek 8 climax. Unfortunately, neither were from significant Fantasy assets, and both wiped out the clean sheets on offer.

Here’s the notes on Monday night’s encounter at the King Power Stadium.

Mahrez steals Vardy’s thunder

It was left to Riyad Mahrez (8.4) to rescue a point for Leicester City, atoning for a dreadful miss earlier in the match, as the Algerian snaffled up Islam Slimani’s knock-down to drill the Foxes equaliser.

Owned by just 3.6% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Mahrez is unlikely to convince as a potential asset in the current landscape, with midfielders from Man City in particular currently dominating his price bracket.

Monday’s goal was his first of the season which has arrived from 18 shots so far, with just four hitting the target.

But Mahrez tops the Leicester ranks for attempts overall, with Jamie Vardy (8.6) back on 15 having mustered just a single effort on Monday night.

Vardy was partnered with Kelechi Iheanacho (6.7) who surprisingly replaced Shinji Okazaki (5.6) in the starting XI. The Japanese international stayed at home over the break, so Craig Shakespeare’s decision was unexpected. Over 51,000 managers had signed Okazaki prior to Gameweek 8.

That was dwarfed by the 294,000 who moved for Vardy. They will have been disappointed by Monday night’s showing but will remain confident of returns from forthcoming fixtures with Swansea (a), Everton (h) and Stoke City (a).

Foster misses out as Baggies are breached

Ben Foster’s injury was the big pre-match news, confirming reports on Saturday that he had sustained a problem in training.

A knee complaint, the full prognosis is not yet known, but Foster remains a doubt for the visit to Southampton in Gameweek 9.

It seems the injury was sustained while Foster played with his son on the garden. A freakish setback which Tony Pulis described as “an enormous worry”.

“At the moment we don’t know exactly what it is. He was playing with his son in the back garden and he’s just tweaked his knee and we’re a little bit concerned because he’s had the cruciate. There was no way in a million years we were going to take the risk with him.”

Boaz Myhill stepped in but was unable to prevent Mahrez’ second-half leveller. Indeed, the stand-in keeper suffered his own injury – confirmed by the player himself as a dead leg. He will need to be assessed ahead of the St Mary’s trip with the 21,993 managers who have Myhill in reserve for Foster now facing the unlikely prospect of having no active goalkeeper.

West Brom’s defence have now kept just a single clean sheet in their last six Gameweeks ahead of a gruelling run of fixtures. Man City (h), Chelsea (h) and Spurs (a) all loom in the next five Gameweeks.

That run is also unlikely to promote any interest in Nacer Chadli (5.7) despite his superb dead-ball strike for the Baggies goal.

The Belgian was making his first start of the season, having been out of favour to this point, while also struggling with a recurring hamstring injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lowe to Ota worth a FT? Or better go Luiz?

    That would give me :

    Elliot
    Bavies/Ota*/Jones/Cedric
    Salah/Sterling/Ritchie
    Kane/Kaku/Jesus

    Foster/TC/Mbemba/Chalobah

hard to argue here. again not saying sell tammy or anything, simply he doesnt fall into the safe starter (and finisher) of games category, especially if swansea morph into their normally preferred 433

little shout-out for josh king here too, another 90mins despite the injury doubt going into the game. it's not just avoiding team sheet nervousness but there's nothing worse than your striker not scoring by half time and knowing he probably only has more 15mins to score

I'm losing Laca for this reason and the Giroud spectre, but the Man City boys are so prolific it's a bit different for them. They don't need long to do damage, either starting or ending.

Not sure, W R. I don't feel, good a player as he is, that Zaha is a good FPL buy. Abraham MIGHT work - but that was against Huddersfield, who are slowly losing their grip. Sterling is just slipping in form, a tad(I was the first to get him in).
Dropping Lukaku BEFORE Huddersfield, is perhaps, not your finest FPL suggestion. Just my opinions. 🙂

agree with you here on zaha doos. he's a bit mane/richarlison/alli in that so often he'll score score and get no bonus. or he'll score and get an assist and get 1 bonus whilst milivojevic will just score a pen and get 3 bonus. doesn't make him a non option, but arguably makes him an overrated option

GW31 you can expect 5-7 games to be postponed.

I'm not sure that's the optimal usage of a FH though. There is an argument that you could gain more by using it in a standard week if you pick that week carefully.

One thing that should be taken into account is that the FH costs you a FT unless you use it in GW38. Same as the wildcard but in the case of the wildcard you have unlimited FTs so it doesn't matter. But with the FH you are actually impairing your ability to transition your underlying team. So GW31 would seem attractive but DGW34 is only 3 weeks later and you are effectively losing a FT you could use to prepare for that.

When to use the FH not as simple a calculation as it appears.

U could already have players for dgw 34 which would result in a lot of blanks for your players in week 31, making 31 a good time to use it

Will depend a lot on the fixtures in the blank week. If it's a bunch of weak teams the potential to gain big may be lower than in a normal GW where strong teams have easy fixtures.

I noticed that in the members section, in Player Stats, Nikola Vlasic is listed as an forward, but in FPL, he is a midfielder. Think it should be fixed...

Given fixtures Aguero & Morata are the two forwards to have if fit. Kaku an Kane dropped 442 looks good option or 352 Erikson season keeper, city mids cheap, rich, Zaha look good and have fixtures

Thanks. Thats my feeling too. I guess when you see at least 7 improvements to the team that can be made, its a fair decision. Although, tempting to save wc...

What would you do with this lot? I have 2FT and 0.4ITB but my options are quite limited without downgrading my strikeforce - something I don't want to do this week. Suggestions?

      Elliot
      Jones Kola Davies
      Carroll Richarlison Salah Sterling
      Lukaku Jesus Kane

I would say yes but United's next few games aren't great and Morata isn't 100%.

Go ahead and do Kola -> Jones. Wait and see how Morata comes through the CL game before pulling the trigger on the second one.

anyone with the wildcard in hand, and a very ropey looking team for next gw but is still tearing their hair out and procrastinating over using it?
lukaku's plum fixture then 2 dodgy ones, kane's 2 dodgy ones, aguero back to muddy the jesus/sane/sterling waters, as well as his own given that city looked otherworldly without him just like times last season when he couldnt get back in for a while. morata may need a week or 2 to re-find his rhythm post injury. lacazette has swansea at home when lukaku and kane butt heads in best defence vs best bus driver, but is the least trustworthy big striker.

      Better on WC

      a) Salah (on pens and great fixtures)
      b) Eriksen (have Kane)
      c) both and downgrade Aguero to Jesus

Thinking about making the following moves over next 2 GWs:

Foster & van Dijk > Butland & Daniels

      Good transfers?

I'm looking along those lines too. Good fixtures and good prices. Daniels may drop to 4.8 which would be a result.

I wouldn't buy too much into this statistical stuff... People are not machines, but psychological beings... Things like Bou actually had an okay result losing only 1-0 at Spurs whereas Stoke just shipped 7 goals matter a lot, for instance, for team cohesion, overall morale, and so on, so forth...
