The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Strange year when Arsenal are at home to Swansea next week and pretty much zero talk of Sanchez/Lacazette

Sanchez is expensive and he's been out of sorts so far this season , but i do have Laca , he failed as captain for me against Brighton & Watford , but i'll still probably captain him next week though cos Arsenal are usually good for a few goals at home against bottom half teams 🙂

I have Sanchez captain today so there will be lots of talk about him from me later....
I’m predicting a big haul against Everton and a mass influx for the game v Swansea..

So people with Jones and Jesus are just holding until mid week games and injury updates then?

I’ve got 2ft and thinking of bumping jesus to Aguero and Jones down to a 4.5 like Moreno.

Jesus to Aguero seems way too sideways. Both are prone to rotation so why bother?

For Jones it depends on how serious his injury is. He's cheap enough to bench if its only short term.

It’s a personal preference. I think Kun is just better and I can take the benchings if he explodes more often.

I’ve got Luiz, Otta, Davies so happy to bench if short term. He’s gone if it’s longer than a Gameweek though.

Jesus I'll hold onto for now. Jones is a wait and see how bad the injury is.

    Fabianski - (Elliot)
    Otamendi - Monreal - Davies - (Mbemba) - Ward
    Coutinho - Hazard - Silva - (Cork) - (King)
    Kane - Morata - Joselu (1.6 ITB, 1 FT)

Already did Kaku to Morata. What transfers would you look at doing?

    Forster/Elliott
    Jones/Bavies/Alonso/stones/ward
    Erik/Sterling/Zaha/Brady/TC
    Kun/Lukaku/dlc

    1.5 itb, 1FT.

My team is a shambles at the moment. I need to get rid of Kaku, Alonso, Brady and potentially jones . And get in a pool midfielder and morata perhaps. Plus I have no idea which defender to bring in for Alonso.

Any suggestions would be welcome. As I see it I might have to take a hit for two weeks in a row to fix this mess.

Leave morata, some other posters who watched him said he had a very poor game. See what the Jones diagnosis is and then maybe look to do Alonso to a 4.5/5m def and Brady to Salah/Couts

Shockingly, this kneejerk WC squad not only got feedback, but it also was relatively good feedback.
So, the next question is: Too early to go ahead and do it?

    Current team:
    Elliot, Foster
    Cedric, Monreal, Alonso, BSmith, Rangel
    Eriksen, Richarlison, Silva, Atsu, RLC
    Vardy, Kane, Lukaku

    WC to this:
    OTAMENDI, AZPI, WARD, MARIAPPA, Rangel
    SALAH, Richarlison, Silva, Atsu, STERLING
    DIOUF, Kane, Lukaku

Didn't spot Sterling at the end there, with that in mind I'd go for it but since you're locked out of Kun may as well keep Kaku and downgrade atsu to get another 4.5m def for your bench

I was some of the positive feedback I think. You don't have to get the team you want just the prize risers if you WC early.
And get rid of any possible price fallers for now. That's probably a quicker way to make a buck by not losing it.

Looks like Kane captainers may well have the last laugh this weekend...Thoughts on this lot?

    Pope (Elliot)
    Azpilicueta Davies Stones Ward (Wimmer)
    Hazard Eriksen Sterling RLC (Carroll)
    Kane Jesus (DCL)

    2FT, 0.0ITB.
Like to bring in Liverpool cover and Richarlison:

    Hazard DCL > Richarlison Firmino?

Haz historic away form the issue with only 1 home game (v Utd) in the next 4...tbh I'm not all that excited about getting Firmino back..may have to look at a (-4) to get wet

      Haz Carroll Azpi/Stones/Davies >
      Coutinho Richarlison 6.3/5.3/5.3 (-4)

That looks very nice indeed, keep Azpi and assess Davies, if he doesn't look like he'll play gw10 due to cup involvement do those moves with Davies to Cedric and then switch to Daniels for gw12, if it does look like he'll play then I'd lose stones

Sane has played the last 7 matches continuously. Doesnt that mean nailed and all have been after mendy got injured. Just feel Silva is not explosive as sane or sterling

    DeGea

    Daniels Maguire Dawson

    Sanchez Hazard Mkhi Choupo

    Kane Firmino Okazaki

    Elliot Löwe Gamez Chalobah

    2FTs and 0 in bank....

    Current thinking is....
    Dawson + Mkhi >
    Tarkowski + Silva....
    Any other suggestions....?
