Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Sterling Back On Goal Trail

Raheem Sterling’s two goals put pay to any Tottenham Hotspur challenge at the Etihad Stadium, as Pep Guardiola’s charges overcame the absence of playmaker David Silva with another outstanding attacking display.

Sterling’s brace in a 4-1 victory masked a mixed evening’s work for the winger, who really should have had at least a hat-trick. His six efforts on goal arrived via four big chances, two of which went begging.

But Sterling’s 1.1 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners will still be more than happy with a 12-point return, if not the fact that his prolifigacy cost the winger bonus points.

Sterling has now produced 11 goals, with Fantasy returns in seven of his last ten appearances. Perhaps more crucially, he has been named in Guardiola’s starting line-up in nine of the last ten matches in all competitions, including the previous eight Gameweeks.

Sterling would seem likely to get a rest in the EFL Cup tie with Leicester City in midweek, setting him up for another start against Bournemouth in Gameweek 19.

In his current form – and with captaincy options limited by the fixtures – Sterling now becomes a serious armband candidate.

A goal every 109.8 minutes is an extraordinary record for a midfield option. He is second only to Mohamed Salah over the season for that metric, along with FPL’s points per match statistic over the season (7.0 vs 7.5) before the Egyptian’s run-out at Bournemouth today.

Sterling is currently the most bought FPL player ahead of Gameweek 19, with his price peaking at a season-high 8.4

De Bruyne charges on

While Sterling continues to deliver, Kevin De Bruyne maintained his steep ascent as a Fantasy asset.

The Belgian’s goal output has increased considerably, with Saturday’s strike his fifth in eight Gameweeks. He’s now delivered back-to-back double-digit scores, with five for the season as a whole.

Sealing the three bonus points, De Bruyne is now giving chase to Salah at the top of the FPL midfield standings on 113, with Sterling (112) and Silva (102) making up three of the top four.

Leroy Sane (95) trails that trio of team-mates, but revived his Fantasy stock with a pair of assists on Saturday. That represented his first attacking returns since Gameweek 11, though he is still without a goal since a strike at The Hawthorns back in Gameweek 10.

Along with Sterling, it is De Bruyne who is tempting investment as the second most bought player ahead of Gameweek 19 so far.

There’s no question that sales of David Silva are fuelling those trades.

The Spaniard was the most popular transfer target heading into Saturday’s deadline, finding his way into 278,000 new squads.

But he was absent from City’s teamsheet due to personal reasons, which currently remain unexplained.

There were tributes made to Silva from the City players during and after Saturday’s win, and we can only wait on more information and hope that all is well with him and his loved ones.

City Strikers fade out

The fact that a mention of Man City’s strikers is now almost an afterthought underlines just how their midfield has overpowered both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Silva as assets.

Saturday did little to change that situation.

A disgruntled Aguero was hooked before the hour mark as his job share with Jesus continued. The Brazilian was introduced, only to miss a penalty kick to deliver a -1 return.

Jesus is without a goal in his last five Gameweek appearances, while Aguero boasts two over the same time frame. However, that is dwarfed by the rates currently being achieved by Sterling and De Bruyne.

Kane escapes for abject Spurs

Harry Kane’s failure to register points at the Etihad was perhaps no surprise.

However, his agricultural challenge on Sterling that could, and should, have earned a straight red card certainly was.

The striker was booked and must now avoid a caution at Burnley in Gameweek 19 to avoid a one-match ban.

Kane lost over 93,000 in ownership ahead of Saturday’s match.

But despite another single point return, sales have currently slowed ahead of the Turf Moor trip. He’s showing a net loss of just over 4,000 at the time of writing.

That reflects a market distracted by movement in midfield and also the fact that there remains no convincing option to replace the Spurs striker.

With Alvaro Morata restricted to an appearance from the bench in Gameweek 18, it will likely take points from Romelu Lukaku or Roberto Firmino to push Kane’s owners to the exit.

Elsewhere for Mauricio Pochettino’s shell-shocked side, Christian Eriksen maintained his recent revival with a consolation goal.

The Dane has now returned two goals and two assists over his last four Gameweeks to keep Son Heung-min at bay as the weapon of choice in the Spurs midfield.

Son did, however, start a fourth successive league outing and has now missed just two of the last 11 Gameweeks.

In defence, Pochettino opted to hand Danny Rose back-to-back league starts for the first time this season, with Ben Davies left on the bench until the 90th minute.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Who to ditch first?
    A-) Kolasinac
    B-) Kiko
    C-) Both (-4)

    Get who first?
    1-) Masuaku
    2-) Christensen
3-) Vertongen (not worth considering him for upcoming DGW?)

    Thanks!!

Depends on your team really. I'd say Kiko out but then you can do a lot more with the Kola £ so it probably isn't worth keeping him unless you know for sure Wenger will revert to 3atb. Both Kola to Christensen and Kiko to Masuaku are good transfers, but I probably wouldn't be doing one for a hit. Definitely not looking at Vertonghen.

Disappointed by opponents approach against City. You are not going to be able to beat their midfield and you are not going to be able to keep lots of possession against them. You can't take a touch and then look to pass it (see Eriksen yesterday).

Want to see a lot more one touch football or dribbles. It won't work 90% of the time, but it only has to come off once to create a big chance or to win a free kick from which you can attack.

You also have tp understand that City like counter attacking. So you have to leave 4 or 5 players back at all times to slow them down.

4 or 5 isn't enough with the likes of KDB, Aguero, Jesus, Silva, Sterling and Sane all charging forward. Silva and KDB play the killer passes and the rest have so much pace.

5-2-3 is the formation I would play. Palace I think have a chance if they get their tactics right:

        Hennessey
        Fosu-Mensah - Dann - Sakho - Tomkins - Schlupp
        Cabaye - Milivojevic
        Townsend - Benteke - Zaha

    (1) Alonso + Gross
    (2) Ogbonna + Silva / Pogba (with Sterling)

Currently have (1) but want a space for another good mid instead is mediocre 6.0 range ones.
    (1) or (2)?

Alonso is a fantastic option but I think 2 is slightly better

I've been playing a very loose 3-5-2/4-5-1 with 1 premium forward (Kane) and DCL.

Given Kane's well documented and persistent woes and with elite managers finally dumping him, is ....

Kane to Morata a wise move if you only have one heavy hitter up front?

If you need the money, otherwise no. Morata is having his own issues.

I’m looking at something similar below.

Only thing is Kane would take two transfers minimum to get back in for the double

Save 2 FTs going into GW22 and do a bit of planning. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Sure, though I'm not sure I'd do it this week over saving FT if I had the option. If you're looking to sell Kane I'd want to do everything possible to have 2FT before the DGW to bring him back in.

I seriously doubt he plays twice in 48 hours. That extra day would make a world of difference.

Don't know about that. Will be difficult to get Kane back for DGW

I've sold Kane (to Firmino) before this GW. I own Aguero whose also been out of form still keeping him to be able to upgrade Aguero to Kane before Spurs dbl GW. Whole Spurs team hasn't been playing at the same level they were playing last year and that's why I don't worry too much for losing Kane.

Forwards are bit of a headache. Premium frwds not delivering and same with budget forwards. Then there is also injury prone players and players that gets rotated.

Anyone looking at a heavy 5 man midfield?

Who would you sell from Hazard Motata Kane to get it?

If you wanted a heavy mid surely Hazard would be in it!

Get rid of Morata, I still thinks he's a great option but avoids a double up at least.

      Plenty are.

      Morata.

Fwiw, still think Richarlison is viable if you want to keep Kane + Morata (and Hazard)

What to do with this lot chaps? Advice needed

    Lloris Elliot
    Bellerin Maguire Smalling Kenny Mariappa
    Salah Richarlison Hazard Surman Carrick
    Kane Firmino Rooney

My defense for next gw makes painful reading:
    - Bellerin (Liverpool H)
    - Maguire (United H)
    - Kenny (Chelsea H)

2.8m itb so how do any of these sound?

    A) Carrick and Bellerin >> Sterling and Masuaku (-4)

    B) Carrick and Maguire >> Pogba and Masuaku (-4)

    C) Carrick, Maguire and Bellerin >> Pogba/Sterling, Jones and Masuaku (-8)

Really would appreciate your thoughts cause I am quite unsure.

    Thanks

      No one knows.

The baby thing I thought was very weird because even if Pep didn't mention it things like that leak. No one has confirmed anything baby/cancer etc. related.

The only thing we do know is something bad has happened to Silva or family.

Yeah this is a really awkward front three. Downgrade Vardy to Quaner IMO, or to Austin/DCL if you do want to play three strikers.

It's the nature of this silly game that any one of those could score back to back hat tricks any g/w soon. Usually when you sell them of course.

I would say Kane > Kun but then that's just my gut. The Foxe's performance was a bit deflating but I still think Vardy is as good as anyone at his price.

Fellow Kane owners - what are you doing with him? If you sell him, who for? I can't see any viable alternative that I like (already have Morata). There is also the GW22 double coming up.
