Set-Piece Takers Updated

One of the benefits of the international break is that it allows us to pause and take stock and perhaps refresh some neglected areas of the site.

We’ve been able to update our set-piece takers based on the evidence of the season so far and, of course, last season’s records – you can now view the updated table – listing the penalty, direct free-kick and corner and indirect free-kick takers for every side – right here.

Mikel Arteta’s shift to Arsene Wenger’s squad has undoubtedly had the biggest impact on the current set-piece landscape. Having relieved Leighton Baines of free-kick and spot-kick duties for Everton at Blackburn in Gameweek three, his deadline day transfer to the Emirates has put Baines back in control, proving a major boost to the left-back’s appeal for the remainder of the season. We’re yet to see what kind of impression Arteta can make at Arsenal but, there’s little doubt he arrives with the reputation of one of the league’s primary set-piece experts and Wenger could well look to relieve Robin Van Persie of some of his responsibilities in this area.

Revisting that Blackburn vs Everton clash in the previous Gameweek – it’s worth noting that Junior Hoilett took on spot-kick duties with both David Dunn and Morten Gamst-Pedersen on the pitch. Jason Roberts was available, but Hoilett got the nod over him. Roberts was then off the pitch when Mauro Formica hit the post with his effort. This leaves the Blackburn Rovers spot-kick situation in flux, but we’ve given Hoilett promotion above Roberts in the pecking order, despite Saturday’s miss. New arrival Yakubu could yet have a say in this however.

Indeed, we’re still waiting on the impact of a host of new signings on the set-piece set-up. We imagine that both Samir Nasri and Juan Mata will both have a say for City and Chelsea respectively. Similarly, we’re yet to see how Steven Gerrard’s return, with the Spurs game in a fortnight the target, will influence the situation at Liverpool. Right now Charlie Adam is hogging set-plays but, we imagine that could change on Gerrard’s return to the fold.

Having established a new starting point for the season, we will work to keep this table updated and refreshed on a regular basis as the Gameweeks roll by.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

As ever Doosra, I keep getting dragged off to do stuff. Back for half an hour now in theory. Taken a 4pt hit in FPL and may well take another. 😕

Anyone think Mancini may play a three pronged attack with Aguero and Teevez either side of Dzeko? Scary..

Hi guys. Is RvP worth sacrificing a strong midfielder and attacker. i.e Walcott dzeko -> jarvis, RvP. No matter how good he is do you not think 2 top tier players is better than just one RvP? Thanks

Simpson is left back, Santon right back. Simpson may me threatened bt by R Taylor although as Simpson is a better defender I doubt it.

          Simpson isn't a left back.
All 3 are right footed, I think santon will play left back though. Taylor isn't even a defender, I presume he'll make way.

I dont think Walcott > Arteta is worth a transfer? I think Walcott is the better option anyway. Especially when he goes out in 2 weeks for Mata.
So you think Simpson's place is under threat instead of R.Taylor?

Really tough to know which ManC Midfield train do jump on ATM With Nasri only playing the one, incredibly impressive, game so far. I think if Silva had scored or assisted in that game I wouldn't even be questioning it.
So maybe it's too early to jump on Nasri as yet.

      I'd loose Nasri.

I'm having the same problem as you, finding it tough to stop being amazed by the fixtures and last weeks games. I think I'm going to keep the faith with playing the fixtures for the time being.

What do you guys think is the best option?

    A) Torres and N'Zogbia to Dzeko and Walcott
    or
    B) Torres and Sinclair to Dzeko and Arteta
    or
    C) Torres and N'Zogbia to RVP and Jarvis

With the Champions League games coming up I'm a bit uneasy about Dzeko being safe from rotation. I also think scoring 4 in the last game can only be good for RvP so - C.

Its a tough one, I do believe RVP is Arsenal's genuine threat, Arteta could do really well but its a worry where he will play in the midfield 3, Wilshere is out so Arteta play more defensively. Depends on whether Rosicky, Ramsey or Frimpong partner him and Song in the midfield.

I was initially thinking C as I'm sure of City's rotation but I'm not overly keen on Jarvis but I think he has some good games coming up

Same problem. I think a few are in this postion, RVP is a captain pick and a goalscorer, if he gets through the internationals I want to pick as Arsenal coverage over Arteta or Walcott, Jarvis fixtures are alright as well but obviously feels like a weaker option.

i think that's the question everyone is thinking about! Or even arteta, suarez.

But I think two top tier players are better than one. I think you only need EITHER RvP OR Rooney fso that you have a secure captain. Not both.

    decisions decisions....

how important is to to have some arsenal cover?
    do i go either
    A) Kompany & Brunt
    or
    B) Taylor(swa) & Artea

    rest of team is:

    Vorm/Krul
    Bosingwa/Enrique/De Laet/Simpson
    Young/Mata/Silva/Ferguson
    Rooney/Suarez/Klasnic

Bit worried going B is leaving me pretty weak in diffence

    or any other suggestions?

    I'm in a similar boat.

I want to do TCahill > Arteta but what with Richards injury Senderos > Enrique looks more important. Whatever you do - get rid of Ferguson. I'm of the mind that a full squad of players is more important than having the right names in your team based on past performances.

Big clubs rotate and there are lots of european fixtures coming up. Be prepared - as they say.

Haha, my only problem with having RVP along with Rooney and Suarez is that it spoils the balance of the team a bit. On the other hand you also get a very strong captaincy candidate in him. Very tricky decision!
