The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    How about this?;

    Ruddy - Rudd

    Azpi - Mert - Williams - Huth - Saylor

    Hazard - Mane - Henderson - Ritchie - Anya

    Costa - Aguero - Deeney

£100m bang on, had to downgrade Ivan, Darmain and Ramsey to get Costa in.

        Cheers for the feedback!

Went against Costa in end as it weakened my team far too much. Kept Hazard, swapped Cazorla for Silva and now have to downgrade Darmain to a 5.0 defender

There are plenty of good 5.0 defenders to choose from, so you should be in good shape still.

I'd probably have gone for Williams because I believe Swansea and Leicester have a good rotation?.

Lescott is well in my thoughts though due to the Pulis factor!, it's tough.

    Deeney V Ighalo

If anyone fancies an early season punt, think about Ighalo instead of Deeney. Overall I think Deeney will more than likely out score him in the season, but Ighalo has the ability to score a lot of goals this season. Already on fire in pre season (I know you can't take much from it), he bagged another 2 tonight before making way for Vydra. This is the main downfall - these two will share game time and Deeney will play 99% of games. One of the main reasons I am taking the early gamble is ownership. Ighalo currently under 1% and Deeney nearing towards 15%. If Deeney doesn't score in the first couple of games many will transfer out and early value will be lost, which isn't really the case with Ighalo.

Just thought I would post this as see so many people on here have Deeney in their team and its an option if people fancy a gamble.

I thought most chose Deeney over the others is because he's captain so will play almost every game and is on penalties.

Tradeoffs. I think Deeney has the penalties and apparently an edge of playing time. Deeney scored 21 goals last year and Ighalo 20 so that seems to be a recent wash.

The high ownership of Deeney could make one want to climb on and not be left out if he does well, or avoid so as not to have to join a sell-off if he is not doing well.

and 0.5 cheaper....fits in nicely if you are playing 3-5-2

Will be interesting to see which cheap striker (6 and under) will have the best season

Hennessey rumoured to be on his way to WBA I think, careful on that one!

Not a big fan on tottenham defence, but it should be improved with their new recruits. I kinda miss a Chels defender :)!

Midfield looks pretty solid, its just King who might be prone to rotation. Unclear situation with new manager and so on 🙂

      I like the forwards!

It matters when someone gets injured! Should someone get injured and another one gets rotated. Lets say Deeney is injured, and Ritchie is rotated. Then you want King off the bench to cover atleast the 2-3p the benchfodder usually provides 🙂

I'm on the fence about Cabaye too - if he's playing from deep that dents his appeal slightly compared to if he were playing 10, though I imagine he will still have set pieces. If he is playing deep, it may be a boon to Bolasie.

Strong looking team otherwise. Personally I would prefer Ozil to Ramsey, but that's your call.

Very unclear as he is "new" in PL and in new in the team too. Perhaps pre-season friendlies will be key here!

Im torn between the two, might go Özil as he is probably the most nailed on. Just a bit turned off by his fear of the opponent goal 😉

Why isn't anyone considering Oscar and Bony?
Aguero won't start for the first few game weeks which will give Bony a glorious chance to prove himself. His goal to game record at Swansea was excellent, I find it crazy that almost nobody is considering him. Dzeko + Jovetic look likely to be leaving. And if Pellegrini continues to play 2 up top then Bony must be a shout even when Aguero returns?
And Oscar is very underrated. Everyone's attention is on Hazard and Fabregas which is of course understandable.. But Oscar seems more budget friendly and if he manages to stay fit he could chalk up 150+ this season I'm sure.
Both are heading into my team come GW1.

I was also considering Mata last week. But I thought he may be a risk due to Manchester Uniteds election in midfield. But if Di-Maria leaves for PSG then that for me halves the risk straight away. And if Mata can replicate his stunning form at Chelsea, this season could be the one!

KIIIIIIIIII great shout for a 4th mid IMO. With him and Henderson (who is also excellent value) as a 3rd and 4th mid allows for an extra big hitter in defence (where the points are at).

Any other viable midfield options at 5.5 if ki doesn't work out?

Not that I know off the top of my head. I will have some funds in itb for Ki > Ritchie or Payet if need be.

Changed my team thanks to some helpful feedback earlier - how does this rate?

    Cech (Rudd)

    Azpi - Komp - Clyne - Fonte - (Francis)

    Silva - Fab - Cazorla - Wanyama - (Anya)

    Rooney - Giroud - (Deeney)

could change formation to a 4-3-3 depending on if it's better to start deeney or wanyama.

    still have 1.5mil ITB.

    any feedback would be great.

I would downgrade Clyne or Fonte, and perhaps downgrade Cech to a 5m keeper, so that you can upgrade Anya. Otherwise a strong draft in my opinion.

    RMT please?

    Schmeichel - Butland

    Jenkinson - Mertesacker - Cedric - O'Shea - S.Taylor

    Depay - Hazard - Silva - Chadli - Wanyama

    Pelle - Sakho - Costa

Strike might be a bit weak, but they all look good for the first few fixtures. Anybody recommend any changes?

      GK: 2/2
      DF: 4/5
      MD: 5/5
      FW: 2/3

      TOTAL: 13/15
      GRADE: B

notes: S Taylor isnt nailed on. Be wary of Wanyama's high ownership which could lead to a price drop. Strikeforce is ok-ish, pay attention to the situation at Southampton as there is Pelle/Long/JRod to chose from.

Not a fan of Pelle, Depay or even Chadli. You out in the bank?

I'd replace Depay with Ozil/Yaya/Mata, I'd replace Chadli with perhaps Hendo? Not entirely sure what I'd do with Pelle, just don't fancy him.

Just a lack of certainty about whether he starts. These boards seem to love him, but want to make sure he is actually slated to start.

Tough but surely they are both nailed. Hammers aren't gonna spend 10m on a DF who doesn't start.

I'm worried about opting for JRod and Sterling over Giroud and Hendo
that would leave me with 2 budget strikers in Rodriguez and Sakho to go with Costa up top and I'm afraid that would leave me very unflexible as there imo are less options in the mid price range for mids than forwards and I feel going with that front 3 aND changing the balance of my team sets me up alreas to wildcard right away. Anyone mind waying in?

Will Mane's position on the field change this season at all, with JRod back?

Don't think so. Will either play centrally or on the right if JWP plays as a 10. Threatening regardless.
