The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 26

This is getting to be a habit for Romelu Lukaku.

With a legion of more than 627,000 FPL managers tentatively trusting him with the Gameweek 26 captaincy, he muscled his way to Everton’s second goal to repay the faith and bolster his heavy-hitter CV once again.

While we perhaps had visions of another Bournemouth-style bumper return against a hapless Sunderland defence, Lukaku’s backers will gladly accept a seventh strike from his last four Goodison Park encounters, providing further evidence that this may just be an asset we can trust with the armband.

He was almost handed it by default on this occasion. With both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez closed off as options, the support for Lukaku was somewhat forced.

Diego Costa provided the main alternative and, while he proved his reliability with yet another goal, he remains a slow drip to Lukaku’s gushing tap – a player that will feed us regular points without promising to excite.

Having blanked in four of his last nine Gameweek starts, it offered reassurance that the Costa consistency was still there. However, he missed out on bonus points once again and has yet to score more than 9 points at Stamford Bridge all season; explosivity is just not on the menu with Costa – in more ways than one.

Ironically, he could now give way to Sergio Aguero in many squads – a player renowned for one-off hauls that can better even Lukaku’s Bournemouth effort – should Manchester City’s double Gameweek 27 be confirmed.

Elsewhere today, West Brom’s Chris Brunt again missed out on a potential assist. Denied in Gameweek 25 by the top of Gareth McAuley’s head that deflected Jonny Evan’s initial effort, today Brunt’s corner led to the scrappiest of goals – with McAuley again the benefactor.

Two weeks to the day, the Knee Jerk remarked on how McAuley was a charmed asset, a player who almost bought about his own luck by being an alert and significant physical presence in the box.

And so it came to fruition again today.

Brunt’s delivery was met with a feeble punch by Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc, span off what appeared to be Steve Cook’s back, before arriving for the gleeful McAuley to convert. The two touches from two Cherries players, cancelling out Brunt’s contribution.

Fortune again the provider for McAuley, while denying another delivery from Brunt it’s reward.

Brunt appears to have developed his own unwanted habit, and it’s a far nastier one than Lukaku’s.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Is there any chance that Man City vs Man Utd might still go ahead tonight?

        Can they not play at the same time? Man Utd vs Southampton & Man City. Same pitch.

        Ease fixture congestion and all that?

    My move seems pretty straightforward;
    Defoe/Alli > Aguero/Sterling (-4) 1.3itb.
    I already have Pieters,
    Lining up like this for 27 , 4-3-3

    Foster (Pickford)
    Pieters/Alonso/Coleman/Brunt (Amat)
    Sterling/Mane/Siggy (Antonio/Fletcher)
    Aguero (TC?)/Costa/Lukaku

    No point ditching Antonio (not enough to get Sterling in a swap)now after keeping for so long is there? Anything else?

      Yeah that looks sensible to me. Triple (c) Agüero now or at a later date? What are you thinking?

      Do you see bench boost being more valuable than triple (c) in a fully loaded DGW?

      How likely are we to get a full DGW?

        If Agueros benched for cup-I'm there I think, I TC Caroll last year (9pts) so this looks 'decent'
        I think there will be better Dgws to BB (33/37) so I'll WC before that to set it up.

          Looking at City's schedule, it's that Monaco fixture that seems crucial.

          This presumes that City get past Huddersfield....

          If we presume that Aguero will be starting in Monaco - not a certainty by any means because Pep could go with a false nine - then we should perhaps expect Aguero to be rested vs Boro in the FA Cup Quarter-Finals.

          If that is the case, that would allow him to figure prominently against Stoke in midweek.

          As mentioned yesterday, the Stoke game gives City the chance to close the gap on Chelsea - so I would have thought Pep would prioritise a victory there and go to Boro with a weakened side capable of winning that tie, ahead of Monaco.

          I like your thinking, Agüero rested ahead of the DGW could swing it.

          Will the 2nd leg against Monaco immediately follow the DGW though? This could mean he sits out one of the DGW fixtures?

            If City have a DGW then they play Boro before Monaco in the FA Cup last eight.

    Thoughts on my proposed transfers lads?

    Alli + Jesus > Sterling + Agüero for GW27.

    GW28 players will be Heaton, Coleman, McAuley, Brunt, Fletcher, Mané, Siggy & Lukaku. I will have 1FT so I could do Amat > Hull defender.

    8 players in GW28 is pretty damn good considering there is 4/5 games being played

    How can I be sure that sanchez will get a dgw that is not the big one where I will want to wildcard and bench boost?

      Yeah there's a bandwagon slowly coming about here over Kun as TC. I get it might do it but I dunno, Pep and his rotation policy is kind of scary ain't it?. Sanchez seems to be a machine and is more likely to play both games in a DGW or even triple as you mention.

      I get a feeling there will be many who'll say they will TC Kun but won't because in the back of their minds will be, I wonder if there will be something more fruitful around the corner. Could be make or break for a decent season these chips, don't wanna be hasty.

    Current team is;

    Heaton, Pick
    Coleman, McAuley, Holgate, Holebas, Chambers
    Mane, Siggy, Phillips, Alli, de Roon
    Lukaku, Costa, Kane
    1ft, 2.6itb

    A) Costa, Alli -> Kun, Sterling -4
    B) Kane, Alli -> Kun, Sterling -4
    C) Costa -> Kun
    D) Kane -> Kun
    E) Something else?

    Would then transfer either or both out after gw 27 for gw 28 players when man city's fixtures turn crap..

    Costa/Lukaku/Barnes

    £1.6m in bank

    Help please guys. Really stuck at the minute.

    If* City win I'm going to bring Sergio in for Costa.

    That's leaves me with money to save to bring him in for the week.

    WBA's fixtures turn south soon and he's injured so I'm thinking of taking Phillips out. Who for though?

    Has to be £5.1m or under. Initial thought was Tom Carroll but i'm not keen on having 3 Swansea assests. Was thinking Fehgouli who's looked good recently or maybe even a GW27 Stoke asset like Allen?

    What do you guys reckon? Please help!

      You have a good number of starters for 28. I wouldn't be unhappy with 8-9 playing. Don't give yourself a poor team to deal with after. They are not strong teams in 28. Philips should go... Fraser might be a good replacement.
