The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 29

Alexis Sanchez is taking his turn as the latest heavy-hitter to cause us consternation.

Brought in by more than 91,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of today’s trip to West Brom, the Chilean produced a typically superb goal for the Gunners that, ultimately, was to prove a mere consolation.

Interrupted by recent postponements, his first half strike in the 3-1 defeat means that Sanchez has now provided a goal or an assist in eight of his last nine Gameweeks – a record that ensures he remains the top scoring FPL asset.

An inevitable transfer target with Arsenal due to play another 11 matches over the remaining nine Gameweeks, today nonetheless provided further food for thought for those holding or considering a Sanchez acquisition.

His performance at The Hawthorns started so brightly – the goal punctuating a superb opening period of the game for Sanchez, full of endeavour and neat flicks.

If there were any concerns surrounding his performance levels dipping as a result of recent speculation surrounding his future at the club, they were dispelled in those opening 30 minutes

Then came the clattering challenge from West Brom’s James McClean, a tackle that delivered a blow to the ankle that perhaps should have seen Sanchez immediately withdrawn.

Instead, he played on until half-time to emerged for the second period.

Unable to impact on proceedings as the match slipped away from Arsenal, Sanchez was clearly affected by the injury, eventually giving way on 78 minutes.

A forlorn Arsene Wenger gave a brief verdict on the injury post-match, simply stating that Sanchez’ ankle “doesn’t look good”, later describing it as in “a terrible state”.

Due to depart with Chile for two World Cup qualifiers, including a vital clash with Argentina, we surely won’t have long to wait until we have a fuller prognosis, with Wenger insisting that if there is ligament damage, he will not travel.

But as we know, Sanchez is a player who refuses to bow to injuries. A factor behind his second-half appearance, his desire to play through pain will also doubtless govern the decision to depart to Chile.

Wenger and his Fantasy owners will then face a nervous wait for Sanchez’ return ahead of a Gameweek 30 clash with Manchester City.

But, there are also further concerns surrounding Arsenal’s form and confidence. On today’s evidence, Sanchez will need to carry Arsenal to victories over their remaining matches.

While this would seemingly guarantee him appearances, if fit, over the remaining 11 matches, we perhaps have to question whether his points output can be maintained.

With Sanchez subdued, the Gunners faded badly in the second period, created little and mustered just two efforts on target all match.

Even Sanchez, for all his incredible talent as a player and Fantasy asset, may struggle to go on producing in an Arsenal side so bereft of confidence and creativity.

Wenger’s press conference comments, promising an imminent end to the speculation surrounding his future of the club may now be key to a revival.

That will no doubt be the focus for the media over the international break, leaving us to monitor Sanchez’s fitness and assess whether the alarming Arsenal malaise can be lifted so that the season’s ultimate heavy-hitter can truly shine and deliver.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Probably looking too deep into my start team rather than trying to get a good start. It's much easier to stay ahead than catch up.

Yes, I'd swap a good start for anything but I'd rather not get a crap defense. I ended up at 1.6m after the first four weeks and 1.1m after the first five weeks with a defense of:

        Amat Stones Valencia Evans Francis

Think the one thing I'm going to do differently next season is get 2 premium defenders and only 1 bench fodder defender.

The point is that cheaping up at the back 'covers' with the extra in hitter in attack. Also you generally have a view to wildcarding.

Bad Sanchez, hazard rotation timing. Fuchs. Haines instead of coleman (although I recovered a bit several gw ago getting coleman as a combo). Missing Sanchez 23 point, and both earlier lukaku hattrick captain, hauls.

Not sure if this rings a bell with anyone but ruined my team just after xmas to get aguero back in for burnley. He then stunk up the team for the next 5 or so. I had had a great december then removed players like kane and eriksen to get aguero back and they punished me badly.

Not taking hits for defenders by far has been my biggest regret. Not sure if I'll change that, but I'll definitely pay a lot more attention to getting better defenders in. Carried Williams and Smith from GW6 WC and Nyom from GW13 in addition to crap keepers.

Interesting strategy but AppleBonkers spends a lot of transfers on big defender whilst not rotating the heavy hitter attackers like we do. He's pretty successful with it too.

I think that is the way to go, at least I will try it next season. The extra big hitter in attack just feels good but I'm not sure it is really effective. I've scored well in forwards this year but that's because my 3rd forwards have been Austin GW6-GW15 and Defoe from GW15-GW26. Have rarely had 3 big hitters in forwards. In mids, I've missed out on Hazard's 19, Alexis' 23 and so it's not like saving in defense is ensuring I get them. My defender and keeper points though. Ugh!

Not getting in Lukaku in GW24, when I was advising everyone else to get him and cap him. Was either sell Ibra or two hits to get him, and I didn't take the plunge. Charlie Nicholas was commentating on the Everton game on Soccer Saturday, and his voice reminds me every time.

Took Fuchs instead of Alonso in GW 11 🙁
Took Walcott then he got injured 🙁
Took Phillips then he didn't get even one assist 🙁

For me: Gw27 hits were slightly advantageous. Gw28 was a bust, and hits made it worse. Gw29 hit worked modestly. It's less about hits than about the actual decision, hit or not. My decisions this year have not been consistently positive.

Would be good to see Middlesbrough start producing some more goals. Possible dgw week of Gw34 vs bou SUN or Gw37 vs SOU SUN.

DeRoon, Gestede or Traore could be great enables with excellent dgw fixtures

Think DeRoon is the best 5th mid for the doubles as it stands anyway. I'm hoping to see Traore given a more free role now that they look to score some goals..if they still remember how to that is.

Anyone other stand out options in this category?

Guys were discussing about biggest regret in the season.

How about the luckiest thing that happened to you?

Mine: gw 1, had Capou as bench fodder, with Fabregas,Shaqiri as 3rd,4th mid.
Gw1,Fab didnt play, got capous haul.
Gw2, Shaqiri got injured dint play, got Capou haul again.
Gw3,4,5. Fielded Capou, got all of his early hauls. 😀
Was inside 100k for some time.
    Now lurking around 300k

    1. Pep says
      • 8 Years

Got in Hazard before his 19pt haul, Sanchez before his 23pt haul, Alonso/Coleman before their 15pt haul, Eriksen before his 19pt haul, had Heaton all season.

This has gone the other way too though, dumping players before a haul but it's the ones in the first paragraph I'll remember next season..

Still slightly gutted Alonso didn't score last night. He's such a great player to own, watching him stand on the penalty spot at one point when Willian had the ball on the right wing. Cracked the crossbar then with the free and Grant made a great save on an earlier effort by him.
