Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 33

Our last poll was dominated by two players, Sergio Aguero and Dele Alli, who garnered more than half of all votes.

This latest run-down is set to be another close call, with two Golden Boot-chasing strikers looking like stand-out captaincy picks for their favourable home encounters in Gameweek 33.

Romelu Lukaku’s (10.4) sensational form in front of his own fans carried on at the weekend, with his brace against Leicester City meaning he has scored 12 goals in his last seven Goodison Park encounters and 23 in total this season – more than any other player.

Next up is a visit from a Burnley side that has conceded 30 times and kept just three clean sheets in their 16 league road trips, which should ensure the 45.4% owned Belgian is among this week’s frontrunners.

Prior to a three-match injury lay-off, Harry Kane (11.3) was also on a hot streak, finding the net six times between Gameweeks 24 and 27 to bring his season total to 19.

With a promising 30-minute run-out under his belt in Tottenham’s 4-0 rout of Watford on Saturday, he looks primed for interest for the visit of an obliging Bournemouth defence to White Hart Lane this weekend – the Cherries have shipped 14 goals and kept just one clean sheet in their last six away matches.

Already more than 36,000 FPL managers have brought in the England striker and his 9.6% ownership is set to rise further before the next deadline.

But while Kane looks likely to be the main attraction among Mauricco Pochetinno’s troops, Spurs’ midfield trio of Dele Alli (9.1), Christian Eriksen (8.8) and Son Heung-min (8.4) are others likely to feature prominently.

Against Watford, Son was outstanding, with a 19-point haul from two goals, an assist and maximum bonus returns. Should he be retained in the starting XI to support Kane as expected, the South Korean looks a strong bet to add to his 11 goals for the campaign. Since Saturday he is the most bought asset, with more than 53,000 new FPL managers.

Alli also got on the scoresheet, bagging his 16th goal of the season against the Hornets, while his Danish team-mate also demands attention with five goals and nine assists in front of his own fans.

Sergio Aguero (12.8), who pipped Alli to the summit of Gameweek 32’s poll by just 2% of the vote, also looks an enticing armband option ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Southampton. The Argentine’s strike against Hull City on Saturday was his fifth in six starts. The Saints, however, have proved resilient at home in recent weeks, with two clean sheets in their last four St Mary’s encounters.

In addition, the City marksman has not been an explosive option of late, with his last double-digit FPL points haul coming in Gameweek 13.

Liverpool’s fatigued Brazilian duo, Philippe Coutinho (8.4) and Roberto Firmino (8.6), were preserved away at Stoke City, but with a goal apiece from the bench, they are among other strong candidates in our poll’s chasing pack.

They take on a West Brom side incapable of keeping a clean sheet at The Hawthorns of late, with their last shut-out on home turf arriving against Stoke in Gameweek 24.

A trip to Middlesbrough would have ensured Alexis Sanchez (11.6) competed for the summit – if it had taken place earlier this season when he was fielded as a central striker. But being stranded on Arsenal’s left wing over his last four matches has curtailed his threat markedly and he’s scored just once across that period. Potential backers will be keeping a close eye on the 26.8%-owned Chilean’s performance at Crystal Palace tonight to see if he can revive his output.

Theo Walcott (7.4) and Mesut Ozil (9.4) are two more Gunners’ assets that will be closely monitored at Selhurst Park after impressing in recent matches. The German playmaker has registered a goal and assist in his last two, while Waclott has two strikes over the same period.

Both are also strong differential options, given they have an ownership base below 10%.

Interest in Chelsea duo Diego Costa (10.5) and Eden Hazard (10.3), as well as Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4), is likely to be tempered when they face each other in a tricky clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This could see some voters instead decide to back a differential, with Troy Deeney (6.9) among the best options as he prepares to host a Swansea City side that has conceded 10 goals in their last six. The 7%-owned Hornets’ talisman has scored four in as many home starts and being reduced to a bench role against Spurs on Saturday should mean he’s well-rested for the Swans’ visit.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 33 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Got 3 Spurs players and want Kane - what's the opinion on removing Son after his peak performance?

With 2 FTs, I need to do something this week but future transfers King, Kane, Gabbiadini, Sterling/Sane and Mustafi have a poor GW33.

    Pickford (Jaku)
B Davies, Holgate, Valencia (Chambers, Yoshida)
    Sanchez, Siggy, Coutinho, Alli, Son
    Vardy, Lukaku (Defoe)

What would you do with this transfer?

        Heya mate

Yeah I really don't wana lose Kun either if he's scoring goals. Just seems really silly to take out a guy who is scoring for a guy who looked a bit rusty and didn't actually score in the last match, especially if I have Eriksen and Alli to cover and I put the armband on one of them... Might just leave it another week, when I can do Ibra+Kane in for Kaku+Kun if required haha

Looks good, you're relying a fair bit on Son continuing on, and I think you will have a persistent benching headache with Zaha as sub usually.

Be tempted to downgrade Zaha to a 4.5 or below and then up Son to Eriksen / Alli here. Maybe do a 1 week switch for Zaha later down the line - maybe for Sterling ahead of the Manc derby, or maybe don't have Sterling at all and have Haz Zaha Alli Wally 4.5?

i wouldn't be swapping Ibra out. DGW coming up and i have not seen a convincing argument that says he will not play both games. ManU are in a dogfight for 4th place, only 6 pts. behind Liverpool with 2 games in hand, and only 4 behind ManCity with a game in hand. Unless tht gap increases he will play every PL game, imo.

also, i'm giving Kane some time. He has been out a month and just started training last week. His ownership is still low, less that 10%, and 2.6% in the top 10k (though it will be higher by the weekend), which should minimize any damage he might do this week.

So it seems Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal will all sign a striker in the summer. Maybe Man City if Aguero leaves.

Can see Chelsea/United wanting Lukaku, maybe Belotti. Morata linked to Chelsea too. Arsenal and Liverpool probably shop in the market below Lukaku. Mauro Icardi would be my number 1 choice for any of the clubs. Should be fun for FPL 🙂

Depends if we get CL and go big for a CF. We need a wide man so that might hinder our CF target somewhat. I prefer Icardi to Lacazette, and if we're not shopping for the top echelon, then I'd love Timo Werner.

The big dilemma for me now is whether to bother bringing Ibra back in for the DGW?

Would mean dropping Kane or Lukaku and as we have learnt in previous seasons this can sometimes be a mistake.

Kane has Palace and Lukaku has West Ham!

Think I might just ignore Ibra, GW34 is a very dull DGW. He has Burnley and City both away, hardly inspiring. I can see a blank and maybe 1 goal. Lukaku and Kane could easily outscore him.

      Thoughts?

But Zlatan is Zlatan. I'm not looking past him as a fixture-proof player. Two games is more than one, this alone increases the probability for him to score.

That's the point though. In my mind he was clearly the best option. Ibra against Sunderland. That's all I need to know. I'm a sunderland supporter so maybe I realise the fact that I realise how bad we are made it easier for me.

So basically everyone here thinks Zlatan can't score against Chelsea? Rushing for Kane (admitted that he's got bigger potential this week) and then want Zlatan back for the doubles. Patience my friends.

How did u come to the conclusion that everyone was getting kane over ibra?

Nothing wrong with getting kane this week and getting ibra (probably for lukaku o someone else). Even swapping kane to ibra could be a decent move if u captain kane this week

Sorry, that came out wrong. Meant everyone who are considering transferring Ibra out for Kane, even though they would bring him back in. Some are even considering leaving Ibra out for good. They don't seem to value his goal scoring abilities. Chelsea haven't kept a cleanie for ages now.

Ok , granted the last time chel v man they kept a clean sheet, but...

        Ibra didn't play
since then they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any game
in that time they conceded against king , beteke and walters

Nice. You already have the cash needed bound to striking positions. Would definitely have Aguero for the rest of the season after GW34, and most likely will involve him in my WC.

Obviously wouldn't be adequate to bring in Zlatan this particular GW if you don't already own him. I'm stating that it isn't needed to lose him for one GW only.

Yep, trickier position for you. Aguero is in for the rest of the season methinks. Kane or Kaku out for a week for Ibra I think, tough call which. Have Alli and Son, so may drop Kane for a week. Not sure I want Ibra for the rest of the season after 34 though.

A lot on here have used their TC on the Aguero double a few weeks ago (me included). But you'll have a couple more DGWs to pick from for your BB and TC.

37 is going to be a huge DGW so consensus on here - rightly imo - is to BB then, as you'll have so many fixtures to get points from. There should be another one for Arsenal so TC on Sanchez looks primed for that one maybe for you.

This seems like the right plan. It's probably what I'd like to do ideally. I just wasn't sure if Arsenal would get another at a good time I guess!

But Sanchez is pretty fixture proof, so anytime would be fine I think!

bringing in Harry feels too quick for me. he just returned to training, and hadn't played for a month before Watford.
yes, he looked very good. but his ownership is still low and was only 2.6% in the top 10k last week . . . Kun could do a lot more damage to OR's than Kane this week, imo.

Hello! Walker leaving my side (most to get rid of a Spurs player to allow Kane, than because of Walker's blanks) - who would you look at to bring in? Can afford anyone but thinking going cheaper to give me some wiggle room.

      A) Pieters - lovely run of fixtures but no doubles.
      B) Gibson - doubles, horrid fixtures either side.
      C) Bailly - doubles, but would give me Valencia and him
      D) Someone else?

putting together a WC takes a lot of effort. you need to do it.

of those 5 defenders, the only one that i think rates a look-see on a WC team is Yoshida.

On WC, so trying to make a bit of cash on the rises. So going to ditch Sanchez til Saturday morning. In his place do I get Coutinho or Alli? Alli looking likely to rise tonight but transfers in at a slower rate than Cout who's nowhere near rising yet.

Hoping for a 0.2 rise by Saturday morning to get me an extra 0.1m Might make the difference between getting Valencia or Rojo on WC.
