Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

I think I'm finally sorted baring any big Transfers happening. What's everyone think ?
    Foster, Elliot,
    Milner, Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric, Rangel
    Mane, Alli, Willian, Ritchie, RLC,
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin

I believe gabbiadini and Austin are 50/50 for first choice so a little gamble but he's going to score goals against the teams Southampton have if he is first choice.

Willian will start whilst Hazard is Injured, when's he's back I'll swap him out.

    Cheers

I think Gabbiadini will start most games tbh

When he transferred last season he was playing every game until he got injured.

Austin was also starting unless he was injured or just coming back though. End of last season Gabbiadini had a bit of a stinker and was getting benched

Milner's place would be of concern if Liverpool sign Robertson

Milner was a must for me, one of my first picks. Even if Robertson comes straight in at LB I can see him dropping into midfield. If I'm wrong I can swap him out for another costly defender as well.

You should give the Huddersfield scout reports a read they talk about van la parra, think he may be a rotation risk this season.

    Best 7.0 St? (Or below)

I was thinking Iheanacho if he goes to LEI?
    OR
    Gayle/Mitrovic for Newcastle?

    My Draft squad so far:

    De Gea (Ryan)
    Mcauley/Milner/Kolasinac/Lindelof (Cedric)
    Ramsey/KDB/RLC/Willian (Carroll)
    Laca/Kaku/Mitrovic

    Foster * Fabiansky
    Trippier * Valencia * Walker * Cedric * Daniels
    Eriksen * Coutinho * Mkhitaryan/Pogba * Carroll * Loftus-Cheek
    Lacazette * Aguero * Ayew

Ayew, RLC and Daniels rotate so that one is playing each week. Favorable home fixtures at least for 10+ weeks. I have been thinking of adding either Milner and/or Alonso in.

Any love for Ward-Prowse as a 4th mid? Mainly it's the price and fixtures for me, but he's also on set pieces

    Good afternoon all!
Been having a tinker over the past few days and have settled on this as a first draft. Let me know what ya think:
    Foster, Elliot
    Tripper, Lindelof, Cedric, Ake, Cameron
    Mane, Willian, Ramsey, RLC, Carroll
    Kane, Lacazette, Jesus

    Midfield too weak?

Yeah, get a cheap 3rd forward, way to expensive up there.

    Smith(HUD)-Ake-Maguire-Monreal-Cedric
    Eriksen-Zaha-Pogba-Carrick-Sane
    Lukaku-Lacazette-Afobe

I was thinking Monreal to Lindelof, not sure.

What formation, 442? Afobe and Carrick not nailed. Lindelof also unsure for now.

Defence poor. Carrick is a waste of money. Pogba not worth it for me, but an understandable punt. Afobe not good.

Also you can't do Montreal to lindeloff alone as too many united.

    5. Eze Really?

Getting rid of Carrick will allow you to get another man U asset if you need one.

DEF: Poor, Cedric (maybe Ake) is the only decent one
      Do Monreal > Kola
MID: Pogba is an if, and Carrol is a waste of space
FWD: Good, but Adobe is bad

Torn between these two, if I go A I have no Liverpool attacker, If I go B I have no Arsenal attacker. What's everyone prefer?

    A) Lacazette, De Bruyne, Fer/Walters/5.5m
    B) Jesus, Mane, Ritchie/6m

    Cheers

Liverpools attack over Ars anyday, since Mane is fixture proof. Usually scores against top 6 teams aswell (I always captain him against Spurs or Man City or Ars)

I do like Mane this year think he will have a great season. Did prefer Lacazette to Jesus but can't not have a Man city attacker and with talk of Aguero moving on it makes Jesus more appealing.

If you got no Arsenal or Leicester coverage in your team then you looking at a 4m+ Gameweek rank at around 11.30pm on Friday August 11th

Sacrifice one of Aguero or Sanchez and use the money to upgrade Gabbi to a premium striker

Never ! Augero is going to outscore both Kane and Kaku. And Sanchez to Hazard downgrade will give be enough money for Benteke or Firmino later on 😉

    Foster/Fabianski
    Bailly, Trippier, Cedric, Mee, 4.0def
Alli, Pogba(if matic comes), Willian, Tadic(Redmond), Carrol
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Firmino

    Opinions?

      Personally I'd go Redmond,
and maybe could downgrade Bailly to Lindelof, to get 4.5 DEF or upgrade Carrol but that's not necessary

As you tinker with your team, which player is tormenting you the most?

For me, it's Aguero. I don't want to miss out on his hat trick against Brighton, but I'd just hate Pep to bench my most expensive player. It's a nightmare either way.
