The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

Best 4.5 rotating GK pair? (Not keen on Foster)

    I'm thinking Fabianski and Begovic.

Fab/Bego is probably the best pairing but be aware that Howe stated Bego and Boruc are still competing for the no. 1 spot.

C - not injured but hear he has small chance to play.
The other two won't get game time unless serious injures to main 11

If they stick to 4-2-3-1 yes.
But they could tweak it to a 4-3-3 with Herrera and Pogba either side of Matic

I think Pogba will be a box to box midfielder, I can't see him playing no 10. So yes he will be a bit more attacking.

In a midfield trio of Matic - Pogba - Hererra, he will at least be the most advanced/attacking. How attacking is still debatable.

He'd be excellent value if he kicked on in the prem, no question. He just hasn't so far. Not much of a risk in waiting a week or two to see how he goes, can also punt. I just wouldn't be rushing to get him yet.

Have to remember as well United have all of Martial, Rashford, Lingard, Mata, Young and Mkhitaryan available to compete in the two wing positions. If Henrikh doesn't make that spot his own very quickly, Mou has options.

Sorry to be critical instead of encouraging you but I think you should reassess this plan. The idea of playing Kane with 2 budgets should have given you a very strong midfield but it doesn't look that strong imo. Your defence is very strong but (again imo) not great as your 2 main protagonists meet in wk 2 and personally i dont expect a 0-0 draw. It could stop you having that all important good start. Year after year i have a bad start (usually up to about wk 12 or so) so this year im mitigating the risk and playing for the first 5 wks only and planning on a gw6 w/c. Good luck on whatever strategy you adopt.

So many people here talking about Kane like he's an FPL Asgardian. People have got carried away with his end of season form (I enjoyed those goals too btw) and are completely over looking the hindsights (pre season form, his past record that proves he takes time to get going, Spurs' dismal record at Wembley etc.). Yes, he might be a great pick but you can still do well without him if you have the rest of the team in place. I would rather have a strong midfield rather than splashing the cash on a 12.5m striker. I don't have any problem with people having him in their FPL teams and rooting for him to bang a brace or a hattrick in the first gameweek itself but claiming that the not owning him will lead to harsh consequences is a sign of ignorance.
    PS - I love Hurricane 🙂

Sure, Kane has scored 60 goals in 69 starts (0.87 goals a game) against oposition outside the top 6.

            For context...
Aguero has 49 in 57 starts (0.86 goals a game)
Lukaku has 48 in 69 starts (0.7 goals a game)

              • 7 Years
              6 years, 9 months ago

You see, that also makes Aguero and Lukaku equally good options. That's what I'm saying, Kane might be a great option for some and it would be awesome if he does well. Just read a few comments stating that he's an absolute essential to start the season which is vague. One can also argue that Aguero will smash 4 past Brighton and everyone will be scrambling to get him, same for Lukaku against West Ham but these are just potential possibilities, not facts. I repeat, all I wanna say is Kane might be a juicy option but by no means an essential to start the season with.

        • 7 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

Owning someone just because he's the most expensive player doesn't sound right, yeah easy to downgrade if it doesn't work? But how would you justify his very inclusion in the first place?

Now, the Kane bandwagon will come at you claiming that he will bang 89 goals against New Castle and his price will go up to 122.8m the next fortnight.

            • 7 Years

His price isn't likely to go up before a Chelsea fixture. Unless he really explodes against Newcastle. I'm willing to take the risk. It seems like half the people getting Kane are only getting him out of fear, not because he's actually the best pick right now. Fixtures and pre-season wise, Jesus makes more sense. Yet, they don't fear that he might explode. Also, there's no one that's gonna captain Kane in the first 2 weeks anyway.

It's how you use the funds.

It's not like he's the only top striker with the potential to explode and when you factor in Sánchez as well going without him looks viable.

Thoughts on this starting XI, going a bit WB crazy I know but it seems pretty balanced considering?

    Foster
    Alonso / Walker / Bertrand / Trippier
    KDB / Pogba / Willian
    Lukaku / Lacazette / Austin
    (Myhill, Carroll, RLC, Dunk)

What was is about the Olympic Stadium and Wembley Stadium that made West Ham and Spurs look ordinary last season?

    A. Pitch dimensions hindering tactics.
    B. Upton Park/WHL atmosphere missing.
    C. Takes a while getting used to new conditions.
    D. Combination of A, B & C.
    E. Any other reasons.

    Thanks.

          Right. Bear with me:

          1016.11 947.97 WHM(2015/6 ratings), fairly typical.
          748.73 802.46 WHM(2016/7 ratings).

OK, we had a bad Season, right, and we lost our main man, so some of the decline can be explained by this. But, trust me, our home rating has always been 60 to 110 superior to our away rating. So, roughly speaking, our move alone has cost around 100 points on our home rating.

1383.36 1210.63 TOT Top home ranking, after Chelsea.

This Season. Well, it will not be what you expect. To me, our signings are nothing short of an unmitigated disaster.

Adrián is one of the players, along with Noble, who helped hold the team together after Payet's departure. So, to bring Hart would be foolhardy, even if he was still any good. But he isn't.

Arnautovic will probably be the final nail in Carroll's coffin. Or vice versa. Either way, West Ham will suffer.

Zabaleta was a positive move, but we will see. I expect our home rating to start improving, but I would not be surprised to see further decline in our away rating.

I am fearful of relegation, this Season.

              Cheers Doos.

You don't seem optimistic at all. I agree with your points regarding the Hart and Arnie signings. Those were two departments Whm were not short of quality.

Hernandez will add some quality to the team. But I feel Bilic is moving too fast and changing too many things. It wasn't long ago that Downing, Nolan, Carroll and Noble put West Ham in a very good position to develop from.
But the style of play is changing too fast.
