The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Bottomed on last page...

I actually think Shaqiri will be great value this season... Set peices & pens. He's from a team that will probably be mid table-ish. He's nailed on. Am I crazy? He seems to have more potential than the other 'flavour of the week' players anyway...

Yes but you can't expect premium returns from a 5.9 priced midfielder either... I think he'll benefit FPL wise from Arnie's departure

Certainly not, but someone like a Brady or a Ritchie is a better bet for consistent returns to tick the points over.

      Reply from last page:

He scores spectacular goals, I'll give him that. But he's had a lot of time to prove himself as a fantasy asset, and it hasn't happened yet.

He's only 25... Entering his peak shortly. Obviously, he may fail to impress again this season, however, I actually think he'll surprise a few... Injuries haven't helped him in his 1st 2 seasons either..

15 goals / assists despite very limited minutes in first 2 season is not that bad either...

I don't like that he gets injured all the time and have a tendancy to get booked too. But at £5.9 he's a decent punt. I prefer Ritchie though.

    Foster Elliot
    Davies Cedric Daniels Suttner Long

That would make your team quite disbalanced I think. Mkhi + Davies for an 8.7 combo would pretty much mean Mbemba and a 4.5m mid, I think that's risky waters give that you have Long and Carroll already, plus would mean Daniels and Suttner have to start every week. Don't think Mbemba is nailed even for the short term.

Funny how you and me (ID 1617255) practically started out with the same team (except for Long/Hunemeier, Cedric/Stephens and Bertrand/Danilo).

Sadly, you've been way more canny in the transfer market than me. I think you should hold on to the WC. Reckon you can squeeze a few more decent GWs out of that lot.

If you plan to keep Kane Lukaku Aguero only for few gameweeks..My opinion is that on the long run having all three of them would make your team too unbalanced.. I remember last year when we were trying to fit Hazard,Sanchez,Kane,Ibra and nothing good came out of it. (SuperTeam it was called).

If u really want kun then you best lose one of kane/ kaku and keep your team structure. Bigger issue is Mounie. With 2ft you shouldn't need to wc. Maybe just do a -4 and fix it up.

Personally I would just drop one of kane or lukaku for Kun, hes in great form. It might be worth just rotating between the 3 of them throughout the season and just keeping someone like morata for better value so you can strengthen in defense and not lose any value in midfield.
      Just my opinion anyway.

Question for any Saints fans out there: Whats the situation at CB?
I doubled up on Yoshida and Stephens early on which served me fairly well, I want a reliable option there with the fixtures still good short-mid term. Last week Yoshida was dropped/rested so I got rid and kept Stephens (obvious mistake now) but the VVD shadow looms large anyways for both of them, has Hoedt nailed down his spot now? I would go Cedric but I prefer the steady bonus points to the odd assist

I think its Hoedt VvD going forward.

I'm hoping Rashford has another good game tomorrow, so I can justify Lukaku > Rashford. I quite like the look of Aguero, Kane & Rashford.

Otamendi (£5.5) in for Long (£4.0) is a good FT to boost this defence or do you see better shots ? :

Thoughts on Bavies? Would you keep or transfer him out? Is he too much of a rotation risk or is he still worth to keep? Can see this happening more often especially when Spurs have CL midweek games.

I'd keep but I wouldn't bring him in. If Tottenham had score a bunch of goals I would be more worried if I was you. They need him, he's essential to boost their offensive plays.

I'm starting to get worried about Poch. Think he's making some odd decisions by playing Sissoko, dropping Dembele and Davies. The Spurs ship is rocking a bit. The first half tempo today was so slooow.

Anyone interested in West Ham defence after spurs game? Some decent looking fixtures, Reid and Cresswell picking up bonus today and Fonte got an assist and bonus last week. With 3 at the back the defence looks stronger and Cresswell is playing wing-back and is also on corners and some free kicks at the moment.

They're a bit expensive. I'm more interested in Joe Hart for when Foster fixtures turn shite.

They're all 5 and under, not too many teams offer that may options. I guess with all the good strikers a lot of or money is getting tied up in other positions. Just think Cresswell could be an interesting option going forward

With all the WC/price change talk here every day I'm surprised it's rarely or never mentioned that you can make 100 transfers during a GW and then WC 5 minutes before the deadline for the following week without taking any hits. So as you make your transfers they are included in the algorithms used to calculate and predict nightly price changes during the week you're going to use your WC. Of course, there are some people who for some reason forget or are unable to activate it before the GW update and have their season ruined by a -32 hit.

If you intend to bring in Aguero you want your transfer to count toward the transfers that will contribute to his price rising.

Guys, will a cover of Rashford and Mikhi, plus Eriksen and Bavies match the performances of Kane and Lukaku. Got Alexis (really hope he shoots me up in the OR from 170k to within 100k in the next 2-3 matches. Any thoughts? I know its a big ask, but I would be okay with Rashford being 5 goals behind Kaku at the end of the season.
