The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Fabianski 2
    Fernandez -1
Sterling 0 (RLC 1 off bench)
    Silva 3
    Richarlison 5
    Morata 1
    Aguero (c) 14
    Chicharito 1
    Total 26 (with -12) hit = 14 with 3 to go!

If not for Aguero I would have had 0 from 7 players LOL, taking the -12 hit into account LOL.....roll on GW10

I shook up my team to get Kun(14)/Morata(1)/Sterling(0)/Chicharito(1) in

        I replaced Carrick(0),Jesus(1),Kane and Lacazette

so not paid off at all,but its a long term move. Need a Salah hatty, Bavies goal and assist, as well as a Kola goal/CS and everything will be fruity 🙂

    “Good-morning, good-morning!” the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead,
And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
“He's a cheery old card,” grunted Harry to Jack
As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.

But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

    Some advice on choupo lads...

Lucky assist today, but I’d be looking to get rid unless you have problems else where...

He spends half the game playing between upfront and the wing and is not particularly great at either....

Consider that Sane really should have passed to Jesus for a 4th in injury time. Jesus would have had an open goal but Sane was greedy. The point is, even with shared minutes the City front 6 (KDB, Silva, Jesus, Sane, Sterling, Aguero) will all get points in minimal pitch time. Pick your personal favourites and/or what you can afford, and accept that some weeks will irritate you.

The answer to City is to have Sterling Sané and Silva. They're the three cheapest that attack, you just need to have alright bench coverage when benchings occur. No need to captain.

Jesus and Agüero are too expensive for the question marks.

3 city mids is too much imo but you could do:

      Ota
Silva and Ota are pretty much guarnteed minutes so your onyl risk is Sane/Sterling. But ignoring Kun/Jesus is a bit risky

I've got a £1 acca on City, Wolves, Napoli, Bayern, Real, and PSG to win their respective leagues at 614/1.

      Worried about Real atm

    What's your preferred 3rd striker

    A) Jesus/Morata
    B) Firmino/Vardy/Batsh
    C) Tammy/Diouf

Morata, Tammy and Vardy in that order, if you got the funds to roll so high up front. Take it for granted that the other two are Lukaku and Kane..?

Yes, two of Kane, Kaku, Aguero

2 free transfers need to be used wisely next week. Any ideas?

    Elliot
    Cedric Jones Alonso Bellerin
    Salah Shaqiri Eriksen Ritchie
    Lukaku Kane

    Fabianski Abraham Carroll Tuanzabe

Get rid of Kaku. I'd do Ritchie to Richarlison as well.

The only good thing about Sterlings no show tonight is that Lukaku will get the C instead, at least he did a thing..

Hey , have 2 free transfers , if i use them and then do more transfers while playing the free hit chip , will those 2 free transfers go through ?
Don't want to waste transfers as i had saved them with so much difficulty .

    Thanks !

If he played for anyone he would have been. Just one of those things you accept these days I think.

Lads, can I get some early thoughts on these moves for -8?

OUT: Bavies, Hazard, Ritchie & TC

IN: Mee, Salah, Richalison & Fabregas

I wouldn't lose Hazard as part of a -8, that has massive potential to bite you on the ass. Much the same for Davies.

Ritchie has done nowt wrong either.

      Im doing a -8 too

      Alonso, Jones, Carroll and Lukaku

      To

      Mee, Ota, Richarlson and Sergio.

Seems pointless. Davies is still first choice, he lost one game due to illness. Hazard looked good. Ritchie is delivering for his price. TC is a good bench player.

Who do you feel will be the next manager to be shown the door?

Billic, Hughes and Koeman must have one eye on the Seychelles.

Bilic and Koeman the two obvious ones. Mourinho and Hughes both seem to be under huge amounts of pressure from their fans too.
