The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not having Salah is really hurting my team! But to get him in I need to sell Hazard or take a -4.

    Fabianski Elliott
    Otamendi Maguire Ward Dann Duffy
    Hazard Sterling Gross Choupo Cork
    Kane Lukaku Vardy

    1FT, 0 in the bank

With Vardy dropping tonight (I'd intended to sell him for Murray or similar this week anyway), I have the exact funds to do Vardy & Gross to Niasse & Salah. On the assumption that Niasse doesn't get a ban (far from certain, I know), does this seem worth a -4? Or would doing Hazard to Salah first then eventually upgrade Vardy to Morata be better?

It's a big risk to take a hit before all the games have even been played, but on this occasion I think those moves are decent

Thanks. If I go with the idea, I'd just do Vardy to Niasse tonight and wait through the week and watch for price chnages or injuries before doing Gross to Salah. I normally hate doing early transfers, and the Niasse ban factor makes it even more difficult to weigh up!

I agree - I'd much prefer to lose him rather than Gross, but I'd have to to downgrade Vardy to a 4.7 (or 4.6 if I wait and let him drop) to have enough funds for Salah, and as my defence is weak I want a playing third forward, or I'll have to play Cork most weeks (naturally he was on my bench this week)

    Some questions:
    Kane or Aguero?
    Mane or Hazard?
    Sterling or Sane?
    Valencia or Walker?
    Rashford or Niasse?

Yeah that's probably the most realistic way of seeing it. Funny enough having Aguero over Kane will enable me to get the other four 😆

I agree with this. More value in Walker and Niasse. Kane.. You has got to have him.

Start Moreno or Mee this week? On Mee at the moment because I don't want to miss his eventual set piece goal.

The upcoming fixtures for Kane, Kun and Morata look mainly very favourable.
I can see the possible change to 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 an option, but i still feel there is a lot of value in these 3 upfront. The Niasse/Wilson posts i see here could pay off a couple of wkds at most, but we are talking about these 3 big hitters, who can all hit a hat trick on their day. Im hesitant to lose any of these 3. Opinions?

Top heavy blocks the best midfield assets.

I still have Salah/Sane/Richa but agree if I want Hazard as well I need to downgrade a big hitter.

This is my team right now:

      pope
      mee, daniels, jones, otamendi, huenemeier
      coutinho, sterling, atsu, rlc, tc
      aguero, morata, kane

3 big guys up top have done me no favors the past 3 or so gameweeks. Kane not scoring, aguero not playing. Went cout over salah and that has hurt. So, as much as it looks good, it can very much backfire since all your eggs are in one basket (premium strikers).

Considering doing this: Aguero + TC + atsu --> niasse + sane + pogba for -8.

This is my problem .. forwards costing 35M and mids 25M

        Goalkeeper PPG : 4.45
        Defender PPG : 4.68
        Midfield PPG : 5.05
        Forward PPG : 5.06

I'm moving my money to midfield ... will keep Morata as my striker and lose Kane / Kun
Sold Kane for Niasse tonight ... fixtures vs form & schedule
I can do more with e.g. Pogba + Hazard + 5M then I am getting with Kun + Kane
Niasse and Wilson will be lovely subs

    Got this lot:

    Elliot, Fabianski
    Azpi, VVD, Daniels, Ward, Moreno
Hazard, D. Silva, Salah, Surman, RLC
    Joselu, Lukaku, Aguero
    1FT, 1M ITB

    Problems: VVD, Joselu

    What i want: Pogba

Doing Morata for lukaku in gw14 and assessing Aguero/Kane situation

    How do i do it?
Reckon i can do Silva to Pogba, but Silva is consistent and a starter at City.

    A) Tammy > Wilson
    B) Tammy > Niasse
    C) Alli > Hazard
    D) Alli > Pogba
    E) Aguero > Morata
    F) Combination of any above, which could open up for Sane in mid

    Elliot / Speroni
    Otamendi / Daniels / Mee / Naughton / Mariappa
    Salah / Alli / Silva / Richarlison / RLC
    Kane / Aguero / Tammy

    2 FT 0.4 ITB

So I want Pogba and Sane but my midfield only allows one:

      Sterling*, Hazard, Richarlison, Salah, RLC

      1. Sterling > Pogba
      2. Sterling > Sane
