Dugout Discussion – Newcastle vs Man City

The penultimate match of Gameweek 20 gets underway at this evening as Newcastle United welcome league leaders Manchester City to St James’ Park.

Up against a defence with just a single clean sheet in 15 attempts, Pep Guardiola’s side boast three of the top ten captains for this round of fixtures.

Significantly Sergio Aguero – their most backed armband pick (6.2%) – is again chosen to lead the line and makes his fourth successive Premier League start. Gabriel Jesus warms the bench yet again, then.

Kevin De Bruyne (4.2%) and Raheem Sterling (3.1%) are also handed starts, though both have some way to go to match Harry Kane’s 17-point haul at home to Southampton yesterday.

Nonetheless, the pair arrive on Tyneside in fine form. De Bruyne has three goals and two assists in City’s previous six, with three sets of 10+ points hauls during that run.

Meanwhile, Sterling – the top target in midfield for Gameweek 20, with over 173,00 new owners – has served up 34 points in three, courtesy of three goals and a trio of assists.

David Silva’s ongoing personal issues means he misses out for the second time in three matches, however, with Ilkay Gundogan partnering De Bruyne in the centre of the park in his absence. Leroy Sane is also on the timber despite his early withdrawal against Bournemouth last time out – he’s now started just four of the last seven Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm through in the FPL Cup so long as Koscielny doesn't outscore RLC by 54 points 😆

Definitely the furthest I've ever gone in it

Just put him in and forget about the 7m. Accept the 0 against Stoke with an early sub and the rough patches. Very likely to be one of the top scorers come May, if Chelsea don't sign a LWB in January.

Mariappa looks priority as you would want to use 1 transfer and have 2ft's for DW which I guess is the paln.

One of your goalies to Adrian might be a cheeky wee way to get another DGWr without affecting your bench - at least in theory.

Everyone on here banging on about benching Kane.... How many points did you get the last two GW's? How many would you have got without him? Yeah, I want him for the DGW too but I shipped him two weeks ago and then got 80 points with a KDB captain fail and 92 this week... Both without Kane. I can see the benefit right there of selling and buying back as long as you have the funds or FT's to do it.... Taking a bunch of hits to do it though I agree probably isn't the way.

If you bought someone like Morata and he scored 9 points then you might win but it costs more to buy Kane back. You really want double figures plus captaincy on the replacement.

It costs you two transfers is why, and even FTs cost 4 points in reality, so you're 8 points down.

I have Kane and Arnie benched this week, so that's two DGWers in place already. If I save my FT, I'll have 2 FTs to bring in 2 more DGWers in GW22 without a hit. On the other hand, if I transfer Kane out and then back in, I'll have the same 2 DGWers I have now, and no FTs to bring any others in. So it would cost me 8 points in GW22 to have 4.

Had a superb week with 112, however with a few blanks upcoming, what should I do with this lot?

    Pope (Adrian*)

    Christiansen Jones Otanendi (Ogbonna*, Goldson)

    Salah KDB Sterling Lingard (Son*)

    Firmino DCL (Kane*)

So, I essentially have 10 playing players (Goldson doesn’t play). And that is assuming Christiansen is back. Worth taking a free hit we think or is it best saving that for a DGW later in the season?

    Thanks chaps!

How many FT and how much cash.

Something like Kane to Morata and back again could be fine.

But how much would you lose on Kane and make sure you can afford to buy back.

Playing free hit for this dgw sensible to get Kane plus some others in? I am reluctant to lose Morata and Firmino to get Kane in long term - I know this goes against the general consensus but I quite like the balance of the team the extra funds give!

Alternative is to bite the bullet and do Morata KDB and Richarlson to Kane Erik and Arnie for -8 next gwk.

interested in people's thoughts on Hazard and Alonso - Hazard testing us with his low points returns, Alonso looking like he's justifying his price. Best solution to own both? (obviously depends on the balance of your team, but if thinking medium/long term, do you want both)

shifting Haz to Spurs mid even if he does do well. I suppose if he got like 5 goals I might consider keeping for GW22, but would probably sell and buy back. The question is more GW23 onwards, should he feature in our plans? If he does well against a Stoke side with almost no defenders, is that really enough to justify his price tag given his recent returns?

Alonso seems like he's in the groove now, a player to own sooner rather than later

        1. Rainer
          • 7 Years

Agree with the Stoke point, Morata still benefiting from that game early in the season too. As Scratch said he cant be trusted as captain and at that price he needs to be. Too many firing mids at Pool & City along with the DGW coming. Cant be having 15, 3, 2, 6, 3, 3... Expect that from the Choupo's of the game but not Hazard, he's done for now.

Alonso is essential in my team for enjoyment purposes 🙂

it is dubious, I agree. Trying to plan a few ways forward and, like Jay was saying with Kane, looking at re-investing some Haz (premium player) money in the squad, little upgrades here and there are tempting.

I doubt honestly. He's my kryptonite (or I'm his). Every season I've played this game, he goes on a stretch of hauls but never when I own him. So if I get him out not, I'm likely done.

say Haz does well against Stoke, a team with injured and ineligible defenders, would that encourage you to get him back? decent performances and chances in recent matches for Haz, would it be a mistake not plan to get him back gw23 onwards? or too early to say, wait until after Arsenal?

Need to see what the cheaper alternatives are doing. Sterling and Salah take 2 spots, Stoke is supposed to be a good return given the injuries but all the other fails are just too much when rivals are gaining on you by not having him.

Exactly. My main rival https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/entry/872273/history hasn't had Hazard all season. He had Sane at the right time and WC'ed in GW19 and got Son and Arnie and probably transferred in Lingard and Firmino for a hit for GW21.

Like those above he's out for Spurs mid but there's a good chance that either him or Morata might come in GW23, it depends on Citeh, liverpool & less likely Spurs midfielders.
Morata might be a better fit but Haz would still be the preferred choice, by then someone like Pogba might be irresistable!!!

yeah I guess it's a wait and see, and adapt accordingly to the players who are performing. I mean this is the game obviously! I agree I think Kane is enough after the double from Spurs. I'm not sure about Morata - Firmino and either a cheap forward or even Kun if I feel like going back to an expensive front three. Haz v Kun is interesting, might go just Alonso from Chelsea.

Transfer window might through some interesting options our way, doubt it though.

Guardiola has been my manager of the year. Forget the monies and even players. He walks on the water.

Arguably Dyche challenges him for what he's done with so little at his disposal.

      Fixture wise - B
      Long term - B

I have Firmino and he's been a very boy for the last 3 weeks so it's a tough choice but Alonso I think is better long term pick....plus you lose Mbemba.

    This weeks team (112 points)

    Adrian
    Otamendi, Jones, Christiansen
    Son, Salah(vc), Sterling, KDB, Lingard
    Kane(c), Firmino

    (Pope, DCL, Ogbonna, Goldson)

JUST played free hit - now for this week I'm with:

    Pope
    Otamendi, Azpi, Kenny
    Ozil, Sterling, Hazard, Lingard, Salah(c)
    Firmino(vc), Aguero

(Joel Pereira, Ayew, Mbemba, Mason) - Basically fodder!

Good move do we thing folks?

Total waste of free hit in my opinion. Just bench Kane, Son, Og & Adrian. You may get unlucky and have 10men this week but loads of DGWers for 22.

But the key point is that in something like GW33 there will be a week where only 6 or 8 teams play (and often really poor teams that you won't want their players afterwards).

Free hit seems tailor made for this.

For GW22, which would you prefer:

    A) Lloris*, Erik*, Christensen, Morata (* = DGW)

    B) Pope, KDB, Alonso, Firmino -4

Would do the move purely to have a playing sub cause there will be rotations. Worth it?

You still didn't say if he would be 1st sub. Everton won't be getting many CS soon so I wouldn't really be interested in getting him now.

Would probably make him first sub. Who else would you consider getting in for mariappa? Or save ft?

I'd think so. Set pieces the only way I see them conceding, can't see WBA having enough possession to do that either

    1. thegaffer82

I'm leaning towards Alli. Eriksen has flattered to deceive with a slightly deeper role this season and I'm just worried about Sons minutes

        Son, Alli, Kane

Yeah Son's minutes are a bit worrying especially when the 2 matches are in a span of 2 days. But I still can't deny that Alli's performance this season was garbage.. The last 2 matches might be his turning point but who knows.

Eriksen still returned 5 times in the last 6 matches even with his deeper position. I am currently leaning toward Son as he is more "explosive" and that he is a bit greedy which is good for FPL
