Scout Report – Pablo Hernandez

Michael Laudrup’s restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad continued last week with the capture of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia. The 27-year-old joins on a three-year-contract for a club record fee of £5.5m and reunites with Laudrup, having previously played under the Dane at Getafe.

With Scott Sinclair leaving for Man City, Laudrup has bolstered the Swans’ options on the flanks with yet another canny piece of business. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the new Swansea boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

He has played a lot of games in the Champions League games in the last three seasons and made his debut in the national team. I am looking forward to working with him again; he is a good player with the right mentality. He specifically wanted to come here. The other players who have come here have come from smaller clubs, and here is a player from the third biggest club in Spain and he wants to come here. It is great for us.

The Statistics

A product of the Valencia youth academy, Hernandez played a single game in the 2005-06 campaign before being loaned out to second division Cadiz for the following season. Producing four goals from 22 appearances, he caught the eye of Laudrup and was snapped up for Getafe in 2007. A single season for the Dane saw Hernandez feature 28 times in La Liga, returning three goals and three assists, before Valencia splashed the cash to bring him back to the Mestalla on a six-year contract.

Starring alongside the likes of David Silva and Juan Mata, Hernandez proved to be a pivotal figure upon his return. Over four full seasons, the winger’s creativity was as crucial as his eye for goal – a total of 111 league appearances saw him find the net on 16 occasions, with 19 assists also accrued. Hernandez has also featured for his country four times, finding the net once.

The Prospects

Laudrup has been rightly lauded for his impact on Swansea’s style of play so far. Keeping with Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation, his decision to tweak the roles of the wide men has had an instant impact, with Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge both profiting hugely. The pair have produced attacking returns in every one of their three matches under the new man in charge, with three goals and five assists between them.

Hernandez’s arrival, however, places major question marks over the Swansea flanks. As a club record signing, the chances of him swapping La Liga for a place on the Liberty bench seem non-existent, meaning one of the two wide boys will almost certainly make way. Able to play on either wing, he looks favourite to oust Routledge on the left, allowing Dyer to continue his menacing form on the opposite side of the pitch. Indeed, the acquisition of Ki Sung-Yeung also affords Laudrup further options – Jonathan De Guzman has been fielded in a central role but is versatile enough to be moved to the flank, should Laudrup choose to partner the combative Korean with Leon Britton in the centre of the park.

While Michu’s superb start to the season has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price spiral up to 7.3, with 32% of Fantasy managers now snapping up his services, Hernandez could offer us a tempting route into a midfield that seems full of attacking returns right now. Priced at 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game, the former Valencia man looks an intriguing differential if, as expected, he is immediately installed into the first XI. The only real downside is that price tag – both Dyer and Routledge are cheaper across the Fantasy games and are likely to be maintained by their current owners until Hernandez begins to prosper.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, there is plenty evidence to suggest the new boy could offer an instant impact. With three home games (EVE, RDG, WIG) and a trip to struggling Villa in the next five Gameweeks, Laudrup’s side continue to attract significant investment after racking up eight goals in their first three fixtures. Hernandez, though, has sneaked in almost unnoticed – currently, just 597 FPL managers have snapped up the Spaniard’s services. While we’re not expecting a Michu-like beginning to his Premier league career, Hernandez has the class and ability to prosper as a key figure in Laudrup’s new-look side and, as Dyer and Routledge have already illustrated, there looks to be plenty of Fantasy potential on offer out wide for the Welsh club this season.

What will happen first this GW?

    Reid (whm) rising .2
    Rangel rising another .1

      Rangel I'm hoping.

Reid might just pip it though. Based on a higher overall score. Which is the important factor for the masses 🙂

actually the daily NTI is the most important, and Rangel is standing very still.

        Reid needs to increase 110%
        Rangel 90%

        roughly

and Reid is getting far more transfers

in fact, forget I asked in the first place 🙂

Ja i know NTI is the important factor for determining price rise. But i think score is important for determining how many transfers people will make.

Rangel has been going nowhere though. which does worry me.

Hmm, Barfa + Foster, Gibbs & McAuley or Routledge + Begovic, Ivanovic and Vermaelen?

Basically big hitter defence vs average (presuming Ivan stays playing) or Barfa over Routledge. I like a strong 3-5-2 but this would switch to 4-4-2.

Hey guys, already did Bale->Hazard for GW4 (when he was 9.9).

Is it worth doing Zabaleta->Baines for a hit?

I would expect so (not an Arsenal fan).

I think the CS are down to the defenders rather than the gk. As such i think if Szczesny is fully fit after the break, he will be put back in. But keep a playing keeper in reserve just in case.

Mannone is a clown and not only that if Wenger stayed with him it would tremendous confusion as to who is preferred sequence of goalies. For what it's worth we have one serious goalkeeper in Szczesny and then Fabianski and Mannone are muppets and shouldn't even be at the club.

If Szczesny is fit after the international break, he starts.

Made a bugger up of my WC last week. Took Nolan out and put Jarvis in at 11h28 Sat morning(Check my transfer history).

Simpson got inj, Demel possible inj, took Jussi out(although for Foster). Took Graham out for Petric....basically wasted the WC.

Managed to get Michu/Tevez/Hazard in though and build nice team value.

All in all I'm still happy now that the WC is gone and I can move on. Still early days and I hope to roll a trade this week.

Ouch. Jarvis could prove a good buy. Just needs to recreate the service from the left for Carroll like Enrique did in 10/11.

For me, FPL middling. Taken a 12 pointer this gameweek in a fairly thorough reshuffle. Highlight so far has to be having 3 pen saves on my bench in 3 gws: Davis Ruddy Davis...

Doing really well in Sky. About 21st in the Scout league.

Gaz, if you're still about, what are your idea for your defense (assuming your on a WC? Looking at your posts on the previous page it looks like you've got a lot of ideas similar to mine.

    Foster / Bego
    Baines, Rangel(or Williams) / Gorkss(or Gunter), Cuellar / Demel

However, thinking about going for this:

    Juusi / Bego

Baines, McCauley / Gorkss, Saylor / Cuellar

What do you think? I like the first one because I can play Foster, Rangel/Williams and Cuellar most weeks and not worry about a) having too much money sat on the bench and b) picking the wrong defender to start and having points on my bench.

However, I like the NEW/SUN rotation a lot and Juusi / Bego is a cheaper option. Also, overall, the second one probably has a slightly higher goal threat.

Of course, anyone else is welcome to comment.

      Baines/Simpson*/Demel*/Cuellar/Rangel

Risky to start with injured player in your WC though isn't it. There's always a chance they lose their place!

How do you plan to use Rangel / Demel - Rangel most weeks with Demel perhaps in GWs 6, 9 and 12?

Sorry, thought you were on WC.

I'm still not sure I fancy West Ham as a legit source of cleanies, hence my reserve over Juusi / Bego (who I don't think even rotate as well as everyone makes out). Last season they weren't predictable in terms of home/away clean sheet tendencies so I'd be aware of that too.

Jussi/Bego rotate perfect home/away I think for the whole season. Only reason why that combo is looking so good is coz Jussi has kept 2 CS, but it was vs a pathetic villa in week 1 and an even worse Fulham last time.

I had Jussi on my bench week 1 and sold him last on my WC so as you can imagine I'm very pissed off ATM!

But, I agree with you - westham will ship goals me thinks. Jussi is a kek keeper anyway. WBA might just become the Swans/new of last season iro defence, hence my probably doubling up with Foster + ridg/Mcauley for READ/villa/QPR

Ok, double WBA for you. Interesting.

I'm trying to avoid that, especially since there are quite a lot of option in the 5m (or less) range so I don't feel I need to just yet.

I doubled up with Krul + Simpson and Vorm + Taylor last season. It was brilliant as they also rotated h/a.

If Simpson is not available for week 5 I'm doubling. No pain no gain. I just feel Newc won't be the same at the back with Europa fixt as well. Tiote will make a difference though.

I'm looking at it the same way I'm looking at Baines. Not as a defender. Ridgwell & McCauley are a goal threat and boner darlings.

For only 5m and with READ/villa/QPR coming up they are better options then say morrison or Long at 6m. CS will just be a 4pt bonus.

Another thing Swansea won't keep as many cleansheets imo. Unsettled defence.

Saylor looks like a huge goal threat and i expect Newcastle to be much stronger defensively now that Tiote is back. Saylor could have bagged a hat-trick against Everton.

This is something I've often thought too. The fixtures look too good to be true for Swansea but I'm just not sure if they can keep their phenomenal start going, especially without 2 first choice defenders for the next 3.

I think that if you're keen on Swansea Davies is the way to go. At 4 million its looks like a decent punt.

I disagree. If he plays next GW you will still have to find a way to get rid of him in a GW or 2 plus find the cash to bring a second choice defender in.

I have had a defence of Baines, Williams, Cueller, Saylor, Gunter from day 1. Simple and effective defence. Baines is a season keeper and plays every game, Williams is picked for fixtures, will be dropped for a defender with good fixtures/form when Seans take a dip, Saylor and Cueller allow perfect 3rd defender rotation. Gunter is a first choice defender, with a small upside and costa £4m. He is also 5th choice at nearly all times. So a similar strategy and it has been and I think will be very effective and fairly cheap.

No. To be honest especially with his double game week I would keep Gunter. He is there simply as backup and a more relaible option than the West Ham duo. Reading look a little bit more secure than Southampton so I would have him over Clyne and only look to play him in DGW. I would be more tempted to swap Williams. They have suffered some injuries and there are not as many good fixtures coming up as there were. I haven't studied the fixtures enough to suggest a replacement as replacing him isn't a priority for me.

            Can't argue with that.

            Who are your keepers?

Considering Gunter over Gorkss myself too as for £0.1m I feel you don't have to worry about Mariappa.

Now when I said defence isn't my priority...keepers are! I have Friedel & Taylor. I plan on swapping Friedel to Foster next week (as long as I hear stories that Brad is likely to start). Rest of the team...

              Carzola, Hazard, Michu, Nolan, Guithre
              RVP, Tevez, Golden Graham

Used my 2 transfers bringing RVP in for Adebayor (& Guithre in for McClean). I would like to hold off the keeper swap until next week.

Yeah, we are on similar wavelengths I think. Especially regarding the need for Baines, and 2 out of Foster/Bego/Jaask.

But unfortunately my plans and budget dictates I get

      Baines 4.5 4.5 4.5 Demel

      or

      Baines 5.0 4.5 4.0 Demel

Unless I downgrade Berbatov to Lambert or Pienaar to Maloney that is (have Guthrie).

I'm kinda doing it the other way. Keeping cheap THEN seeing what my budget can afford up front. I don't want to sacrifice my defence to get the 'perfect' attack then regret it a few weeks down the line. I want at leas a bit of quality and Simpson / Cuellar are defo good shouts in the respect.

Important to think balance offensive/defensive budget. Agree totally.

Although you never know which 4.0 will outscore which 5.5 defender. But they are out there. A good example was Caulker last season.

Looking at it though, we seem to use roughly the same amount on defence: 34.5M

Just lost 0.2 of team value transferring Toure/Rangel → Cazorla/Reid.

Toure is good, but the extra 0.9 payed for Cazorla will soon be repaid imo (have a look at Yaya 2011 v Cazorla in the comparison tool).

And just in case I want Rangel back, I think a double rise from Reid will make that possible without overall value loss.

Can't you accomodate all three of them in a single midfield? Toure is just tremendous value at 8.0
      Toure Hazard Cazorla Michu/Pienaar/HBA 4.4/4.5

Not sure this is really a viable tactic to be honest.

If you ick Michu/HBA from those options, it means you will probably have to go with Pog up front or risk benching 6m+ every week. The same could be said for Pie too.

That leaves you with no Michu, HBA or Pie. Dangerous having none of those IMO.

Guthrie or Sterling as the 5th midfielder? The first sounds like a reasonable and reliable back-up, while the 2nd has greater potential, yet he could easily drift back out of the starting line-up.

For me the temptation with Sterling is a stake in the Liverpool attack (and the potential 1pt clean sheet too) and whilst Liverpool are in the bottom three, they won't stay there and against us at the weekend, the outcome could have been different especially with Sterling hitting the post and then also very nearly winning a penalty - could have been a double figure return there and Rodgers seems to rate him. Dempsey going to Tottenham is also a factor making less susceptible to rotation unless he wants to play Downing more.

If you switched out Kagawa or Ade for a more reasonably priced alternative you could afford to have no dead wood... personally i think you're playing a risky game...

Take it from me, having subs will save you on most weeks but also hurt you when they score on your bench.

But if you dont have a plan B, it will almost always need to be used, if that makes sense.

ie, having Szezny in goals an no b/u keeper, means i have had a big 0 for my keeper the last to weeks, case closed.

I'm pretty sure switching Kagawa for Barfa would give you the cash to have a 4.5 second keeper, a 4.0 playing defender & someone like Guthrie or Sterling on the bench...

    Lescott Saylor Hangeland Demel Clyne
    Kagawa Bale Yaya Noble Guthrie
    RVP Tevez Graham

    1.5 in the bank

This GW FT transfer Bale -> Hazard

Is it a good idea to do Kagawa -> Cazorla this GW for a 4pt hit? I`m worried about Kagawas game time and think that RVP is enough United cover. Will definitely have Cazorla at some point because he`ll probably be involved a lot in Arsenal goals this season. Both have nice home games this GW but would like to get Cazorla in before his price starts to rise...

He won't keep his place. Etherington will eventually be back in the starting team. Also with Owen arriving you would think this may push Walters into a possible wing position as well. The only thing going for Cameron is his long throws but again with Owen coming in Stoke may change their approach.

Anyway, being the 70s the vol a vents are being brought around and Caesars advisor can't stop raving about them. He keeps nagging and asking Caesar if he's tried them until he gets the response,
