Watchlist

The Watchlist – Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert fitted the pre-season bargain profile perfectly. He came armed with a record that more that suggested he’d be a prime Fantasy talent; a monopoly of Southampton’s attacking output that saw him fetch 27 goals and 14 assists, an involvement in almost half of their goals as the Saints swept to automatic promotion from the Championship.

The optimism surrounding Lambert’s potential took an early jolt, only to be resurrected almost immediately. Saints’ boss Nigel Adkins tinkered with his lineup for their opening fixture at Man City, leaving Lambert straining on the leash from the subs bench. Belatedly, he made his Premier League bow as a second half sub and coolly stroked home an equaliser before the Saints eventually succumbed to a marauding City.

A disappointing blank in the 2-0 home defeat to Wigan quelled the enthusiasm but Lambert was back in the side and on the scoresheet in the St Mary’s encounter with United. Lambert couldn’t prevent another defeat but not before contributing a towering header and a smart assist in the dramatic 3-2 setback.

In short, then, Lambert has already delivered on the top flight stage against two of the so-called toughest defences. Having proven his value to Southampton and his pivotal role in their attacking ambitions, it stands to reason that Lambert will get further opportunities to flourish now that the fixture list is brightening for Adkins’ men.

While Danny Graham has, so far, failed to capitalise on Swansea’s buoyant start to the season with just one strike, Lambert has sneaked up and, in our Watchlist rankings at least, now superseded him as the budget striker option of choice. Graham still holds the advantage in terms of ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game (7.3% vs 5.8%) but that could be set to change in the coming weeks.

Sadly for Lambert, the landscape up front has now been altered, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Steven Fletcher have both shown enough to have Fantasy managers freeing up funds to slot one of that pair alongside two heavy-hitters. Suddenly the budget striker option has become unfashionable – Graham and Lambert are perhaps off the agenda.

Lambert has the talent and fixtures to overcome this. Southampton have, amongst their defensive failings, bristled with creativity and goal threat, suggesting that they will attack over their forthcoming fixtures. The arrival of Gaston Ramirez, already impressive in his Emirates cameo, only adds to their arsenal to help keep Lambert fed.

With set-pieces and penalties in his locker, the 31-year-old Lambert looks almost certain to be in profit if Adkins can turn his attacking outlook into goals. This potential could yet sway some from the allure of the mid-price prospects on offer. The home clash with Villa will be looked upon as the start of Southampton’s season and could see the Lambert bandwagon revving its engines as another differential comes good.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The fact that there is more fantasy cricket talk than fantasy UCL on here shows what a complete disaster it has been.

I'm pretty sure it was on time, even checked later to see if any Eastern European games started early, they didn't. It was only possible to make those subs a few minutes before I did it. I put in Bastos for 12 and captained Mess I, an extra 10 cos he was already in there. E-mailed their support addy and no reply. Mucking Fuppets!

They've had plenty of warm-ups, ensuring the win is total priority.

Zimbabwe win would have been a huge shock but it was still a possibility, if Aghanistan had held their catches yesterday they could have beaten India.

obviously its a possibility but surely the boks back themselves. And theyve not had huge amounts of warm ups especially in sri lanka (and having them next).

i can understand the want to win but putting 200 on the board and then bowling them up for less than half that would of done wonders for moral.

    REPOST

Right, trying to get a discussion going here. . .

Who do you think is a better player?? Xavi or Pirlo?? Also reasons please..

Personally, I”d pick Pirlo.. Purely because of his deadball exploits.. Nothing to choose between them when it comes to passing and I think Pirlo is better at deadball situations.. Cast your votes people. .And with a reason, please

Pirlo sits back and plays with space but Xavi get into the thick of the action and plays clever one touch passes amongst the opposition. That extra intensity means Xavi gets my vote.

I think Pirlo is a more fashionable pick based on his range of passing and set piece ability but Xavi is my choice based on his levels of consistency throughout his career and the fact that he has been at the heart of one of the best teams football has ever seen. Plus he is one of the hardest players to play against in the game. Makes so many top players look average and difficult for them to even get near him.

I would also choose Pirlo... He is a great performer, set piece specialist and an inspirational person on the pitch. He completely lifted Juventus last season and is continuing his good form this season.

Xavi has a great support system from all the great Barca players and I feel Puyol is much closer to the inspirational leader that Pirlo is. If Xavi did not have Iniesta, Messi, Puyol, Villa and others surrounding him, I find it difficult to see him being great. Maybe he is a great player but being in a team like Barca greatly reduces his impact.

Perhaps one of the biggest annoyances oft he Euros's was listening to commentators and pundits bang on about Pirlo like he's only just broke onto the scene. Embaressing to think these 'experts' only recognise these players due to an International tourney and the fact they played against England.

      Anyway rant aside,

close call but has to be Xavi. Phenomenal consistency at the highest level.

It's like divided in two words - fantasy and football. We talk fantasy cricket, you are talking fantasy football....

Reading back at this it doesn't make much sense, nah, honestly it should be mostly football talk here, but a little talk on cricket can be excused. Just ignore and move on.

Yeah it's really good when you get into it and start building a nice squad. Plenty profit to be made long term but you need patience and to learn the market to make some good coins.

I am selling everything I have. Hoping to get 10k in total then use that to invest and make some decent profit. Not even considering squad building now until I make some decent profit.

In the weekend almost upon us soccer isn't so important but football is.

Choosing between an almost certainly injured Cuellar and Clark. Both will prob concede similarly but Clark better for attacking points? Michu captain is mad but potentially lucrative.

Ta. Yes, this website is very good. I just read bad reviews somewhere and thought it's not great but Rotten Tomatoes is by far the best judge 🙂

I have a feeling Ivanovic will be rested as he has played all games till now for Chelsea and deserves a rest...

If RVP gets more than 6 points I am keeping him. Same for Tevez 😉

Considering it. No clear captain choice this week in general with Man U at Liverpool and City v Arsenal.

I am too but couldn't vote for him in captain poll. He's not listed for some strange reason.
