Scout Report – Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Alan Pardew made his second acquisition of the winter transfer window yesterday by snapping up Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier on a five-and-a-half-year contract. The centre-half moves to Tyneside for an undisclosed fee and follows fellow French international Mathieu Debuchy to the club this month as the Magpies look to bolster their bid for survival.

Having accrued a single point from their last five league games, Pardew’s side sit just two points ahead of the drop zone following last Saturday’s home defeat by Reading and are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation fight. With club skipper Fabricio Coloccini apparently keen to return to his native Argentina, the Newcastle boss has turned to the highly-rated 23-year-old to shore up his defence:

“We needed to strengthen the team and bringing in Mapou will give the whole squad a boost. He is precisely the sort of player we’ve been looking to bring to the club. He is a good age for us but has plenty of experience at club and international level. Mapou is a talented footballer, good in the air and on the ground and has all the attributes to succeed as a quality defender in the Premier League. He’s a good character too and that will be important for us over the next few months.”

The Statistics

Born in the Central African Republic, Yanga-Mbiwa moved to France as a youngster and joined the Montpellier youth set-up in 2005. As an 18-year-old, he made his debut towards the end of the 2006-07 and, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the heart of defence, helped his side gain promotion to Ligue 1 a couple of seasons later.

His leadership qualities saw Yanga-Mbiwa named skipper of the club and last term he captained Montpellier to their first ever Ligue 1 title, where they ended the campaign three points ahead of big-spending PSG. Over the course of seven seasons, Yanga-Mbiwa made 186 league appearances, scoring four times and providing three assists. Having featured five times for the France U21 side, he has since picked up three senior caps and was narrowly omitted from the final squad for last summer’s Euro 2012.

The Prospects

With reports once again surfacing this morning of Coloccini’s unrest, it’s looking more likely that Pardew will be without the Argentine by the time February comes around. The Magpies skipper has had an average season by his own high standards in a campaign also blighted by injury – a situation similar to that of Steven Taylor. Without the stability of his first-choice central defensive pairing at the back, Pardew has seen his side register just four clean sheets all season – a far cry from the resilient displays that kept our their opponents 15 times last term.

As a result, Pardew has mainly relied on Mike Williamson but with Taylor edging towards a return, Williamson – who has started 18 of the Magpies’ 23 league matches – could well be edged out the picture and revert to the role of squad player once again. Strong in the air, Yanga-Mbiwa reads the game well and is composed on the ball at the back – there seems little doubt he’s set to be installed in the heart of the back-four.

Faith in Newcastle’s Fantasy assets is understandably low right now, though. Pardew’s side started the campaign with two defeats in their opening 10 but, in a season which has seen many of their main men sidelined by injury, have since lost 10 of their last 13 matches – it’s little surprise the Newcastle boss has been linked with a handful of new players as he looks to quickly address his side’s dire form. Confidence may be dented at present but as the new acquisitions continue to arrive, we may once again find the Magpies offering us a source of mid-price Fantasy alternatives.

Likely to come in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Yanga-Mbiwa has a trip to fellow-strugglers Villa up next and while games against Chelsea and Tottenham dent his appeal, Newcastle then face a kind run of matches (SOT, swa, STO, wig) that look crucial to their prospects. While Pardew is clearly delighted with his new arrival, reports in the French suggest that Montpellier boss Rene Girard is set to leave the club this summer as a result of his annoyance over Yanga-Mbiwa’s sale – a show of appreciation over Newcastle’s new boy if ever there was one. His lack of attacking returns in France, however, suggest Yanga-Mbiwa is likely to be overshadowed by 5.0 priced Debuchy for goals and assist potential, though the stability he brings at the back could well boost his side’s appeal from a defensive perspective.

    Team value: 103.7M

    Mignolet-Federici

    Davies-Demel-Zabaleta-Evra-Pearce

    Michu-Fellaini-Mata-Walcott-Puncheon

I wouldn't double up on Reading defense, but if your rotation works to where you will never have to play both it may work. Take a look at a Norwich defender (Turner / Martin).

I wish it was that easy to predict....its all based on some bizarre zeal to rotate that increases and decreases randomly. If he said I'll alternate well then Ba is a season keeper...bench on Torres days, play when its his turn.

The only credence to the Ba is ahead of Torres is if you feel that Benitez values tonight's game over the Arsenal game. This may or may not be true, but if Arsenal was the important game then perhaps he still values Torres a lot more than many of you think. Inspite of this, I think Ba will start but the alternating makes any fpl player pointless especially as they came on, so there could be plenty of 1pts devaluing the 8-10pts if and when they occur.

Either way, the uncertainty surrounding Ba makes him a no go, especially when Mata is about and an exceptional stake into the Chelsea points. No need to have two Chelsea players, especially with the threat of rotation on the 2nd player.

Demba Ba is a real tease of a problem. Reading away with Chelsea's form on the road says he's a keeper, even captain material for non RVP owners....but this cursed rafatation makes it such a lottery as to whether he'll start.

Could get 1pt, could get 15pt.... I just know if I dump him it'll be the latter.

no,...that'd just be a very short segment of me just going weeeeelllllll, I'm not suuuurrreee...when asked for my view of keeping him or dumping him.

Realistically though it is hard to justify having such an expensive potential 1pt cameo player every alternate week. Long term there are better options.

I'm trying to weigh up the cons of owning him now he is a Chelsea player...

      Cons:

      Not on penalties anymore
No longer the focal point of the team/attack
Owned by too many so his price will inevitably drop with random rotation or another 1 pointer
Likely to be subbed off on 70/80 mins which never happened before (scored some late goals for Newcastle)

Any more you can think of?

The plain facts are he will and has had less chances and touches because of decreased game time. That's the crucial factor. Less minutes = less chances. When he played 90 mins for Newcastle his chance/shot rate was continuously exceptional. While the midfield backing him up would help his game it also might make him less potent as there are more good players to score goals. Whereas at Newcastle there was just him and an off-form Cisse.

With Ba... the way i see it in the short term is that if you currently have him, keep for the next three, but if you don't, obviously be wary of buying him.

Reading, Newcastle and Wigan are probably 3 of the most enticing fixtures you could want, after Villa/QPR maybe. I really don't buy the he costs 9m argument so you shouldn't have him as he's a rotation risk. Ba's shown in his cameo appearances that he's well capable of coming on and scoring if needs must. He was scoring loads for Newcastle, so were he to get significant game time, he'd get plenty of chances in this creative Chelsea team.

I'd be much worried about not owning him and him starting 2 of those 3, than owning him and seeing him get benched for 1 or 2. 37% ownership is so significant and if he explodes, it really won't help your rankings, whereas if he is quiet, it won't hurt much.

Plus with the Europa League for Chelsea soon, i can't see how he won't start against Wigan. If Torres starts against Brentford, then as a non-ba owner i'd be quite worried.

By all means sell after the next 3, but if you have him, give him these 3 games in your team. The other alternatives i've seen are getting Sturridge or Fletcher in. Hardly that exciting given Pool's next 2 fixtures and that it's Sunderland?

In conclusion, keep for now and re-assess other alternatives if he turns out to be a disappointment over the next couple games.

True about Fulham and Norwich. Not sure on QPR yet, backs to the wall defending from what i've seen and Nelsen's a big part of that. When he leaves, you're in trouble. I don't have much faith in Anton Ferdinand and Clint Hill as a CB pairing

Its the uncertainty that is a killer though. That is not something that should come with a 9m price tag.

If he starts against Brentford then I'm ditching personally...can do without the grief...plus in reality the real killer each week is not owning RVP, who is captained by most people and has incredible ownership.

If the striker you have instead of Ba is say Fletcher...who is getting 5-10 each week, compared to Ba's potential 1, 1, 10, 1, 1, 10 then it will offset any damage. Is anyone with any sense ever likely to captain Ba anymore? That is a key question when considering Ba's effect on rank.

A third striker like Fletcher/Benteke/Lambert that is nailed on might well match Ba's scores with all that rotation. This is something I'm bearing in mind. Well put.

It comes down to the key attributes you want, a definite starter and from each position, clean sheets for gk and defenders, mixture of goals and assists for mids and goals for strikers. Ba at the moment doesn't fit the criteria. Fletcher, Benteke do.

I don't intend to keep him for the long term, just for the next few games. Therefore i don't feel really uncertain about. Quietly confident he'll get significant game time. I would think twice about captaining him, but at 37% i think the risk is far greater in the short term if i were to sell now. Don't mind a few price drops. Fletcher is also quite inconsistent, as you very well know Jonty given your history of owning him.

          I know....Fletcher has burnt me before...but at least I know he'll start.

I play a cautious game with few gambles. Ba's uncertainty is not good for the ole ticker.
