Moving Target

Moving Target – Scott Sinclair

West Brom boss Steve Clarke boosted his options on the flanks towards the end of last week by acquiring Scott Sinclair from Manchester City on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. Having previously been coached by Clarke during his five-year spell at Chelsea, the winger revealed the pair’s history played a major part in his decision to move to the midlands:

“I like the style of football Albion play and that’s why I chose to come here and play for Steve Clarke. I know him previously from my Chelsea days and I’m excited to be playing for him again. I sat down with my family and Steve Clarke being at West Brom helped us make the decision when we were discussing where the best place for me to come was at this point of my career. I’ve spoken to Steve throughout, we know each other well, and there isn’t a better place for me to come than here. Albion play good football and it’s great for me to come into this side.”

The History

Sinclair’s career began as a 15-year-old with Bristol City, where he became the club’s second-youngest ever first-team debutant back in late 2004. After making a couple of league appearances, he was snapped up by Chelsea the following summer but, despite his early promise, the winger found himself out of favour and made a mere five appearances for the west London club.

Indeed, much of Sinclair’s game time arrived via loan spells, with the Blues farming him out to a number of lower league clubs. Stints at Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan produced a total of six goals and four assists over 65 appearances before Swansea splashed out £500,000 for his services in the summer of 2010.

Finally guaranteed first-team football, the winger’s time at the Liberty proved a huge success. Handed spot-kick duties for the Welsh outfit, Sinclair racked up 22 goals and three assists in 46 appearances as he helped his new club clinch promotion to the Premier League via a play-off win over Reading.

The wide man’s first year in the top-flight brought him onto Fantasy radars, with eight goals and five assists for the Swans but after scoring in Gameweek 1 against QPR last season, Sinclair’s decision to up depart the Liberty for City ended his Fantasy prospects for 2012/13. Handed nine brief sub appearances and two starts under Roberto Mancini, he failed to find the net once in a hugely disappointing spell.

The Prospects

The move looks a perfect solution for all parties concerned, with Sinclair clearly a peripheral figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team shake-up for the season ahead. Clarke, on the other hand, is desperate to inject some new blood into his side and is keen to help get the winger’s career back on track after a disappointing time at the Etihad:

“Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again. We’re delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career. He is the type of player we were missing from the squad. He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals – he has proven that over his career. He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options.”

Much will depend on Clarke’s preferred formation as to how we assess Sinclair’s potential. So far this term, the Baggies boss has rolled out a 4-4-2 with James Morrison and Graham Dorrans handed the wide roles – if West Brom persist with this shape, Sinclair would also be vying for game time along with Chris Brunt for a role on the wing. Alternatively, Clarke may return to last term’s 4-2-3-1 and shift Morrison back into a central berth behind a lone forward, lessening the competition out wide. In addition, the midlands outfit also lined up in a 4-3-3 in one or two pre-season friendlies – potentially affording Sinclair a role in a front three.

Bearing in mind his side have yet to score over the first two Gameweeks, Clarke looks likely to freshen up his options ahead of the weekend home game with Swansea, perhaps handing Sinclair a debut against his old club. Listed in the mid-price bracket across the Fantasy games – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – Sinclair’s appeal would certainly be boosted if he’s afforded a share of set-pieces, while his impressive spot-kick conversion record may also persuade Clarke to hand him penalty duties.

While the short-term fixtures look decent (SWA, ful, SUN), Clarke’s side then face United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the following six – a schedule hardly conducive to Fantasy investment. With cheaper midfield alternatives such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham, Hull’s Robbie Brady or Everton youngster Ross Barkley not only far kinder on the budget but quick to pick up the attacking points, Sinclair is perhaps one to monitor until the Baggies’ agenda takes a turn for the better around the Gameweek 10 mark.

    WARNING: Ridiculously long post 😯

I'm not usually one for long posts, but I felt this needed to be said. Sorry 😉 There has been a lot of debate about the the new Bonus Point System and how the defenders are racking up the bonus points, including sometimes 6 defenders picking up bonus points, usually 2 each. This has prompted many to proclaim that 4-3-3 is the new 3-4-3 with loading up on premium defenders becoming a viable, maybe even preferable option to the usual heavy front 7 with generally cheap players at the back.

I think it is a bit too early to make a judgement on this, especially considering the well above average CS numbers in the first 2 GWs combined with the much lower than average number of goals. Looking at the last 2 seasons, this becomes very apparent.

    CSs –
    2011/12: 206 (or 5.42/GW)
    2012/13: 206 (or 5.26/GW)
    2013/14: 16 (or 7.62/GW – assuming CHE/AVL as 0.1 of a GW)

This is an increase of 43% over the average of the previous 2 seasons. At the current rate there would be a total of 290 CSs this season or an average of 14.5 CSs per team, which I'm sure you'd all agree is ridiculous.

    Goals –
    2011/12: 1066 @ 2.81/game
    2012/13: 1063 @ 2.8/game
    2013/14: 44 @ 2.1/game

This is also significantly lower than the previous 2 seasons, 25% in fact.

The defenders are also scoring and assisting more so far than in previous seasons. Averages for the previous 2 seasons are as follows (contains 96% of the total goals – some missing from members area)

    Previous 2 seasons –
DEFs: 11% of goals, 17% of assists
MIDs: 42% of goals, 58% of assists
FWDs: 46% of goals, 24% of assists

And of the 44 goals so far this season –
DEFs: 14% of goals, 21% of assists
MIDs: 30% of goals, 55% of assists
FWDs: 57% of goals, 24% of assists

This also highlights the current lack of midfield options currently, but that's for another post...erm...article 😉

From this it is no surprise that the defenders are scoring well in the current BPS setup, as they are performing well above the average so far. I suspect once the CS and goal scoring returns to somewhat near the average then so will the bonus points. Obviously low scoring games like 0-0 and 1-0 will see defenders get the bonus points, but they are doing their job so it's fair enough (perhaps not practically all the defenders getting bonus).

Exactly, and it can be monitored over the coming GWs to see if there is any particular position which is likely to be substantially favoured. CSs do seem to be worth about 5 points currently though.

Right on. Chris Glover did some cool weather/2nd half CS research awhile back -- I think he concluded that the big money/elite teams become fortresses as their talent/numbers show their strength in the 2nd half. We associate it with the weather but it might be the actual men on the field. Just in time for the Jan WC if a CS keeps being worth that much!

      Lovely post.
My point before the season started was that defs get more points per million than any other position, if, as seems to be the case so far, they will get 1-2 baps as well from a clean sheet (previously unheard of) then their value increases again.
Point being upgrading a 4.0 def to a 6.0 may reap more benefit than a 4.5 mid to a 6.5 one.
Its also a lot easier to see which 6.0 def you want than the myriad 6.5 mids that may do well.

thx. I also want to add that the top teams havent started their scoring yet, like when a team win more than 3-1 that is the case so far, then obviously the attackers will get the bps... and not the defenders.

Love it love it love it. Well done sir.

The main points to be gleaned from all this IMO is that we should not be drawing too many conclusions as yet and that midfielders have just been cack so far (emphasis on so far).

Still even in a game like Man City 4 - 0 Newcastle, Joleon Lescott managed to bag a bonus without scoring or assisting. Now that is new... Same goes for Chelsea 2 - 0 Hull where Terry AND Cahill managed to bag 2 bonus points each. These could hardly be labelled low scoring and to me this means that it is not just low scoring games where defenders are likely to bag bonus but in any game where they keep a clean sheet they will nip in for some bonus.

Myhill is second keeper, daniels 3rd, but myhill is only just back in training following injury.

either could start next week. personally i'd like to see daniels given a shot...

    I'm doing Hazard to Brady.

    - Need to get rid of Hazard as he's dropping & no fixture.
    - Also want to leave enough money next week to do Negredo -> RVP
    - Just because I already have a 5.0 midfielder doesn't mean I 'can't' have another one
    - Any potential drop in points from having two 5.0 midfielders can more than be made up by having RVP captain GW 4 and many other GWs
    - Man City have just conceded two sloppy goals from set-pieces
    - Brady is on set pieces and potentially part of a front three

    GW3
    Hazard -> Brady
    Ivanovic -> Ward (-4)

    GW4
Dzeko -> RVP will leave me with

    Mignolet (4m)
    Toure, Collins/ Shaw, Chester/ Ward
    Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas, Kim/ Brady

Do you mean to ride the price rises? I tried that last year in the international break. I was absolutely glued to FISO for two weeks, trying to jump on double risers and then swap them out for others. I made a measly £0.3m out of the lot of them. Not worth it.

I think if you're bringing in players to double-rise and sell then 0.3 is actually quite good. Normally the double-risers are the ones you want to keep.

It certainly took some doing 🙂 I was a wreck by the end of it.

As a side-benefit of wildcarding, it's worth doing. But it's not in itself a good enough reason to wildcard. I was advised on here last year that I could make upwards of £1m doing it and that was the reason I wildcarded when I did. Total fail.

Dud captaincy choice also leads to rank plummeting.
        And picking the wrong players.
        And benching CS.
You regularly see really top ranked teams at the end of the season with TV as low as 105/106, so it's not the be all and end all.
Must admit, I do play the value game closely at this stage of the season 😉

RVP's ppg drops when Rooney plays in the hole. If Rooney remains there all season expect a drop in RVP returns. I'm not wumming, just a warning. Remember Persie's dry patch when Roon returned from injury last season? His returns increased again when Rooney dropped deep to cm...

But the numbers back your point anyway -- same output in 1/3 fewer minutes without him. Significant difference.

          I'd say that's pretty major. We're talking 30% drop.

If only Roonski passed to ball to RvP when he was almost clear through 🙁

To RVP or not is pretty much the only question on my mind for the next week or so.

Roo starts in the hole but is all over the pitch
RPV's best goals last year were assisted by Roo.
Roo is the best setup man for RVP on the team

is toure definitely first choice over skrtell and going to keep that spot even when skrtel injury gone?

Old Man Carragher was first choice over Skrtel so I'd say Toure has to be.

i have 2 options for this gw

      1) play cpl Williams and risk 10min cameo

      2) Lamp-Nolan FT

2FT's could be golden for international break but looking at only next gw Nolan is a good bet

another problem is Lampard form , he doing well under mourinho and i would like to keep him

      what do you think?

With the form he's in and the gametime he's getting, I'd keep and have 2 FTs for next GW. Not sure what you are expecting, I don't see anything suggesting Nolan is gonna explode versus Stoke.

Looks as if hazard will drop tonight.

I'm going to have to decide whether I am getting in Michu or a low budget midfielder. ahhh

why? It seems to be a waste of a transfer. Michu hasn't done anything either.

      POP QUIZ

Alright folks, we all know that we are masters of hindsight, time to test your skills in some foresight.

Who is your captain for GW6? Could be potentially difficult for those of us going without RVP.
