Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 35 – Sunday

Aaron Ramsey grabs a goal and two assists in his first league start since December. Lukas Podolski scores twice as Arsenal remain on course for a fourth-place finish. Raheem Sterling bags a brace and produces an assist as Luis Suarez also nets against Norwich. Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas are both on the scoresheet as Everton ease past a disappointing United at Goodison.

Sterling the Key as Reds Edge Nearer Title
All eyes were on Luis Suarez as the league leaders rolled up to Norwich, but whilst the Uruguayan grabbed yet another goal in a 3-2 triumph, his display was overshadowed by the Merseysiders’ flying winger. Sterling played a pivotal part as Liverpool won for the eleventh time in succession, scoring twice and teeing up Suarez as Brendan Rodgers’ side overcame the loss of Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson through injury and suspension.

After a run of five straight blanks, the 5.8-priced winger has now served up 25 points in the last couple of Gameweeks. Henderson’s suspension certainly cements his starting role after a couple of recent sub appearances, and whilst his form and budget-friendly price tag appeal, back-to-back games against Chelsea and Palace – two of the league’s meanest defences – may deter some from snapping up Sterling right now.

Canaries On the Offensive
Neil Adams retained his midfield diamond formation for yesterday’s showdown, with Robert Snodgrass in “the hole” behind a front two of Gary Hooper and Nathan Redmond. Both Snodgrass and Hooper grabbed a goal apiece in a stirring second-half fightback as the Canaries almost snatched a draw – the defeat leaves them two points clear of safety, but despite trips to United and Chelsea preceding a final day home encounter against Arsenal, it’s clear Adams is determined to operate with an attacking set-up as he looks to steer the Norfolk club to safety.

Ramsey the Spark as Gunners Run Riot
In his first start since Gameweek 18, the Arsenal midfielder served up his biggest haul of the season as Arsenal cruised to victory at Hull. Having provided an assist as a second-half substitute in the midweek win over West Ham, Ramsey’s runs from deep proved the difference for the Gunners, with a goal and a pair of assists accrued in the 3-0 win. A 16-point return will bring the Welshman back onto Fantasy radars ahead of a kind run of matches which sees the Arsene Wenger’s side entertain Newcastle and West Brom before travelling to Norwich, and with Mesut Ozil also back in action after months on the sidelines, the north London side look perfectly poised to see off the challenge of Everton and finish fourth yet again.

Podolski at the Double
Whilst Olivier Giroud failed to find the net against the Tigers, the German international scored twice for the second match in succession. A peripheral figure in the first few months of the campaign, Podolski has suddenly embarked on a Fantasy scoring spree which has delivered five goals, an assist and nine bonus points (or 44 points) in his last five appearances. It’s eight goals in just 898 minutes for the German now, compared to Giroud’s 14 strikes in 2,823 minutes, and with Wenger’s side looking to fire the goals to secure the Champions League spot, Podolski – at only 7.7 – is proving crucial to Arsenal’s return to form.

Baines and Coleman Serve Up the Points
The full-backs both delivered double-figure returns as Everton earned another win over their former manager with a 2-0 triumph. Baines’ converted spot-kick took his goal haul to five for the season – just one behind Coleman, though not one of the left-back’s strikes have arrived from open play. Coleman’s assist for Kevin Mirallas’ goal – incredibly, his first since Gameweek 1 – was supplemented by a couple of bonus points as the duo moved to 174 points and 158 points respectively, sitting first and third for defenders. Those who doubled up on the pair ahead of double Gameweek 34 may now decide to hold onto both for the remainder of the season – trips to Southampton and Hull bode well, given their respective toils in front of goal, leaving a testing trip to the Etihad as the only stumbling block for Martinez’ defence. Sylvain Distin owners are sweating over the Frenchman’s fitness, however, after he was forced off early on with a hamstring problem.

Mirallas in the Points Again
The Belgian struck his side’s second to continue an impressive run of form, with three goals, a trio of assists and six bonus points in his last five appearances for the Toffees. Granted, he has failed to feature at all in two of the last seven, but when handed the time, he has started to overcome the inconsistency that blighted his displays earlier in the season – indeed, Mirallas has now scored or assisted in eight of his last 12 matches for Martinez’ side and has subsequently climbed to fifth spot in the Fantasy Premier League midfielder standings after yesterday’s display.

United Fail to Impress Ahead of Kind Schedule
The likes of Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata had the perfect opportunity to catch Fantasy managers’ attention yesterday as the champions returned to action for the first time since April 5. With a home game against Norwich followed by two Old Trafford showdowns against Sunderland and Hull in double Gameweek 37, a stand-out showing from any of United’s main assets would have kick-started an early bandwagon and strengthened our faith in their potential. Instead, David Moyes’ men turned in an insipid display and registered just two shots on target against a Toffees side that were playing a third match in eight days and had just shipped three to Crystal Palace at Goodison. Unless they can return to form against Norwich next weekend, many may temper their level of investment in a side that are currently stumbling over the finishing line.

If they beat Liverpool they are 2 points behind. Goal difference effectively makes it 3 but Palace keep surprising everyone. Chelsea have played 35 games to get where they are, they won't just give up now.

Agree. But if you take into the account that
            - even if they play full squad, they are not guaranteed they win the match
            - if they play full squad it will definitely affect their chances in CL
            - if they win at LIV, they still need City to drop points, otherwise City will win the league.
            - there's no pressure on Mou to win a trophy in his 1st season, so chasing only 1 trophy gives them more chances to win it.
            - Bookies odds for the title Liv 1/8, MCI 5/1, CHE 30/1

I'd say they need a miracle to win the EPL at this stage and CL comes much handier.

Helped an unfancied Italy side towards the Euro 2012 final? Signed for a medicore Milan team last January and took them to a Champions League spot?

Yes he's certainly got his mental issues on and off the pitch but he's more talented than some of the players mentioned. He's only 23, plenty of time to achieve things through his career. What have Ox and Barkley done?

He's was a 21 year old striker at time, he scored 2 goals against Germany in the semi final. That was crucial.Wasn't all that for much of the tournament but you can't deny he has talent.

Showed consistency for Milan last season after signing for City. That can't be denied.

He showed consistency in putting penalties in with relatively normal accuracy. Not in the actual game. How many open play goals did he score?

We ain't talking about hidden talent but the best players, that is who do the best, play the best. Balotelli has been one of the most useless players in the game for 2 seasons now. Definitely not making any list of the best.

12 goals in 13 games last season for Milan. I don't have the stats on how may were pens but I estimate about half were. Taking those out that's still a goal every 2 games and his overall play was excellent last season. I watched every game.

This season 18 goals in 37 (4 penalties). Hasn't been so good this season but certainly not useless.

Fair enough to leave him out if we're talking about those that are consistently playing the best and not just those that are talented but the OPs list contained some lesser players.

True. The list is still missing the likes of Lacazette who is tormenting defences in France, and Ljajic who is absolute magician. And maybe a bit at the limits of being a young player anymore, but if Ramsey and Hazard make the list, then also Thiago Alcantara that the Bayern players have praised as the best player in world. And David Alaba, he's only 21, and amazing. And Shaqiri, now that we talk about Bayern players.

I would start it with Pogba, definitely. Götze has faded away due to injuries, a bit like Varane, and Verratti isn't half that good in tough matches, he defends abysmally. Neymar has not proven himself in Europe this season and although I do not doubt at all that he is amongst the most talented players in the world, if not the most talented one, I think he must also play really well before he can top a list. Right now, nowhere near likes of Hazard and Pogba.

If this was about talent, I think the list would look really different. There are many players who have showed immense talent but played only little so far, partly due to being still quite young. Considering this as the best young players at the moment, not the most talented ones, I would maybe give a top3 like this:

      1. Pogba
      2. Hazard
      3. Alaba

The rest are more difficult to judge, but these players are too difficult to pass. GK's are always easier to forget, but if I would change that 4th, it would probably be for Courtois.

You still completely missed Hazard from it. That's painful to see.

Anyway, what this proves the most is that we can list a whole huge variety of top10-lists of young players in Europe, disagree about them, be shocked for noticing having forgot an essential top player from them, without ever even mentioning Sterling.

not saying he wasn't a good young player, but it's very premature to say that he's the best youngster there is.

Okay. You originally listed likes of Ramsey too, so I thought that counts.

              Okay, then:

              1. Pogba
              2. Alaba
              3. Courtois

The order of others is very debatable, but I cannot look past Pogba, he's so complete player. There's nothing he couldn't do, and he does everything so damn well. With him, the talks in Italy have been that he might be the best player in history, or is best at his age and has clearly the potential to become the best, period. And that's not completely unwarranted, although it would be premature to say that he already is that (and that's not what they are saying, unlike the Liverpool guys).

Sterling is outperforming Hazard at the moment, depends on how you define how long a player has to sustain his form for.

Erm... he's outperforming Hazard because Hazard is injured and not playing. But look at this season, or even this year, and Hazard has outperformed pretty much everybody.

Yes, little end product, but put a Suarez in that team in place of any other forward and Hazard would have a feckton of assists. It's amazing, really, but he has produced the most scoring chances from open play this season in all European top leagues, and he only has got 7 assists. And that's not even counting the times when Torres and fellows fail to even get a shot despite an open chance.

There are still likes of Laporte in La Liga, Ginter and Goretzka in Bundesliga, Marquinhos, Zouma and Ocampos in Ligue 1, Kovacic and Berardi in Serie A, Depay and Bakkali in Eredivisie, and even Shaw in PL. I rate Shaw higher than Sterling, personally.

Not saying Sterling couldn't be the best of this lot, though. It's a tough battle between some, I'd name Laporte, Kovacic, Goretzka and Marquinhos to challenge for the best with Sterling. I really would love to say Bakkali, but he has missed a lot of matches.

Fellow Gerrard owners, what are you doing?

Feel I might have made a bit of a boo-boo bringing in Rambo for Snoddy last night instead of for Gerrard. Snod is at the tip of the diamond and scrapping for Norwich's life. Difficult fixtures but there appears to have been an improvement over Adams.

Gerrard still a decent shout for the last 3 games?
