Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 29

With Swansea and Liverpool yet to play out the Gameweek tomorrow evening, we take a look at the new injury worries caused by the weekend’s nine fixtures.

Chelsea
Willian was replaced by Juan Cuadrado with just eight minutes remaining of today’s home draw with Southampton after picking up an injury, according to match reports.

Crystal Palace
Alan Pardew is sweating over the availability of a couple of key first-team players after Jason Puncheon (hamstring) and Wilfried Zaha (hip) were both forced off during the weekend win over QPR.

Everton
Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kevin Mirallas missed today’s win over Newcastle with a knock sustained in Thursday’s Europa League victory over Dinamo Kiev. The Belgian is expected to recover in time for this week’s return trip to the Ukraine, though, after failing a late fitness test earlier today.

QPR
Rio Ferdinand missed the trip to Selhurst Park due to illness, the club’s official website has confirmed. The R’s right-back Darnell Furlong was replaced by Clint Hill at the break in Saturday’s defeat at Palace after sustaining a calf complaint, according to manager Chris Ramsey:

”Darnell came off and the only reason he did so was because his calf stiffened up and it wouldn’t have been fair to keep him on. He didn’t come off because they scored two goals.”

Southampton
Eljero Elia missed today’s trip to the Bridge with a twisted ankle, according to the local press.

Stoke
Jonathan Walters was forced off on 67 minutes with a head injury following a collision with Craig Dawson in the Potters’ 1-0 loss at West Brom. Erik Pieters was withdrawn at the break, whilst match reports indicate that Victor Moses was replaced on 57 minutes due to injury. After the match, Mark Hughes gave an update on the former and admitted he has concerns over Walters’ availability:

”Erik should be ok next weekend, but Jon is our main concern at the moment. He looks as though he has a nasty bang on his cheekbone which may well be a fracture and that will have to be checked on Monday. We hope it isn’t but it’s looking as though it could be a serious one that will keep him out for a few games.”

Sunderland
Steven Fletcher was subbed off injured on 82 minutes after sustaining what appeared to be a thigh problem during the Black Cats’ 4-0 home hammering by Villa.

West Brom
Tony Pulis faces an anxious wait on Ben Foster’s fitness after the keeper was forced off with a knee injury during the Baggies’ win over Stoke, whilst match-winner Brown Ideye was also withdrawn late on with a similar complaint.

After the match, Pulis confirmed Foster is set for scans after sustaining the injury in a challenge with the Potters’ Peter Crouch:

“We will have to get him checked. He felt his left knee go from under him. We need him fit.”

West Ham
The Hammers keeper Adrian played from start to finish in the 3-0 loss at Arsenal despite dislocating his finger in the warm-up. Assistant boss Neil McDonald revealed post-match:

”He’s been a brave lad today because he could easily have pulled out. And he’s made some great saves. He has his finger strapped up to play and I’m hoping that if he played today he should alright for next week. He did it in the warm-up but he wanted to carry on. I haven’t ever dislocated my finger so I don’t know how much pain he was in but it’s obviously a big thing for a goalkeeper.”

        Pantilimon

I don't think there's much chance of it being scrapped, but to replace the Main and January Wildcards with two Half-season Wildcards would be an improvement (one to be used in GWs 1-19 and the other in GWs 20-38).

This week seems like a strange time for that observation. The template almost universally failed this week, so it's not like the differentials lost many a lot of ground. And anyone who was sneaky enough to go for Ramsey/Lukaku/Benteke (All players who have had their mini-bandwagons at other parts of the year) would have made up big ground.

Still, for the most part I agree. My team is the same as everyone else's. I agree that scrapping the January wildcard would help.

Teams lack variety in the month or so after the January wildcard, but all of that will change now following the utterly abysmal score for the template this weekend.

Its not always that way though. Not taking any risks is the biggest risk of all, this is why people slowly slide down the rankings. The people who jump on the right bandwagons early are the ones that do well and get the most enjoyment. Don't be afraid to be a pioneer, just don't be silly about it, weigh up the risk/rewards

I disagree, there are still decisions to me made and points to be won. We all have to chose to get rid of, and bring in certain players, I have seen differences of opinion split the routes different managers have taken, Sigurðsson, Mané, Rooney, Sturridge, Berahino, Costa, all barely owned amongst the top teams at the moment yet apparently it is boring.

Why someone would bemoan differentials in a week where the template team has scored to badly is confusing to me. 😆

Have to agree. There are so many outstanding options that have a right to be 'template' players. Yet for some reason they are shunned 😕 Costa, Rooney, Coutinho, Giroud, Ivanovic, triple WBA defence.

    17. A-VB

      Yea true.

At the moment, it is real hard to make ground. Effect of the Jan wildcard as it seems and I think it'll stay this way till the due DGWs (GW34 as of now).

Having said that, I think one can still make ground by adding slight variations here and there from the template team, variations that are reasonable will be enough, and no need at all to take wild punts.

For example, anyone with a West Brom defense double-up this week, or Benteke, or Giroud(c) has definitely benefited this week and made ground, and in truth none of them are wild punts like having Agbonlahor or Carrick.

Now you know what it feels like. I was 300k last season. I couldn't move, yaya SAS ramsey destroyed the game. I made one correct punt, I brought Gerrard in and he did really well but I still couldn't move. The start is everything in this game, I used my wildcard early this season and I think I will continue doing that

That could have just been down to you not scoring better than other teams, rather than everyone having the same team. I'm sure if you were at 300k rank and staying there, the people in the top 10k were scoring better than you.

As Ryan said, not taking risks can be a risk in itself (and is often the best way to catch up).

There's still room for improvement, you just have to be careful. This week's obvious catch-up move was to not captain Aguero. He (and City) have been awful lately, he did not deserve to be top of the captain poll imo.

I captained giroud and moved from 5k to 2k

The top 10 in my main league all played a whopping 8 of the same players this weekend. We pretty much all have terrible weeks or all have great ones. The fine margins and places are literally being decided by the captain pick and two differentials, often in defence. I have two teams, and wondering about a total overhaul in one to either make or break the season. No kun, no sanchez, no chelsea defender.

Backing Pool and Utd could suddenly be a viable option again...

Was an easy game to be able to rotate the squad a bit.

Bellerin is young, so you don't want to risk fatigue. Bellerin is still first choice.

Want to do Austin -> Giroud but need to free up funds.

So it's either Sanchez -> Mané and 3.4ITB (or any other sub-10m mid that isn't Silva or Eriksen)
    or
Puncheon -> Cork to leave 0.0ITB.

Sanchez hasn't delivered in a while and Puncheon looks pretty injured (though is my 5th mid so not essential).

    Thoughts?

Yes. More like his old self today though, and his monopoly on corners and free kicks means inevitable points with Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic, Matic and Costa to aim at...

        Not a bad shout

I'm thinking Hazard. Playing Hull and could be a nice little differential

    A) Wolly > Toby
    B) PVA > Toby

    ?

And any reason not to pick one and do it now to catch any rise on Toby?

    Thanks for any votes

B form me. Sunderland will concede more often

How is Wolly's injury? Is it long term?

    Any ideas for this bunch?

    Myhill - Foster
    Alder - Rose - Bellerin - Naughton - PVA
    Silva - Eriksen - Sanchez - Hazard - Ameobi
    Aguero - Kane - Giroud

Thinking of maybe downgrading Sanchez > Ozil/Ramsey for funds? Cheers 🙂

That United performance was incredible. It was a great advert for the Premier League.

Or was the Spurs performance really terrible. I can't decide. Rooney's goal should never have happened.
