The Digest – Gameweek 30

Our final look at the pertinent topics from Gameweek 30 sees us assess United’s resurgent Spaniard, Palace’s ascent under Alan Pardew and the relentless armband consistency of Tottenham’s new talisman.

The Player

Whilst Steven Gerrard did his best to hog the back pages with a 38-second dismissal, there’s no denying Juan Mata was the headline act in Sunday’s Anfield showdown. The Spaniard’s class and subsequent two-goal haul proved the difference as the visitors ended Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run with a dominant win, described by Louis van Gaal as “one of the most important moments in my career”.

Having failed to start any of United’s six matches between Gameweeks 23-28, Mata looked confined to a bit-part role but a suspension to Angel Di Maria has afforded him the chance to finally nail down a regular spot under the Dutchman. His involvement has helped the Old Trafford outfit to vital back-to-back wins over Champions League rivals Spurs and Liverpool and Van Gaal’s post-match praise of his role on the United right certainly bodes well for future pitch time, leaving Di Maria likely to occupy the opposite flank ahead of Ashley Young.

Impressively – given that he’s started just 19 of his side’s first 30 fixtures – Mata’s Anfield double takes his tally to seven for the season. That’s more than twice Di Maria’s three strikes and a total superior to all but one of his previous three campaigns in the top flight.

With the chase for a top-four spot intensifying, Mata looks to have rediscovered the level of displays that served up 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge. Van Gaal’s side don’t have it easy, though – showdowns with City and Chelsea in the next three will perhaps ensure the playmaker stays off our radars for now, though United, and Mata, have offered strong recent evidence to suggest that they have the form to prevail.

The Team

A 2-1 win at the Britannia elevated Palace into eleventh spot and continued their remarkable ascent under Alan Pardew. The Eagles have now served up six victories and a draw in ten outings since the new man took charge – harvesting a total of 19 points in comparison to the 17 points accrued in their first 20 fixtures.

With the emphasis on attack, Pardew’s decision to shift Jason Puncheon to the middle has allowed him to deploy Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha on the flanks and all three have prospered in recent weeks – Zaha has now struck in back-to-back matches, whilst the former two have three assists apiece over the last four.

Pardew’s decision to call upon Glenn Murray up front has also proved inspired. Handed just 16 minutes by Neil Warnock and farmed out on loan, Murray’s barged his way to the front of the pecking order in the new regime, with four goals, an assist and five bonus points in the last four.

It’s testament to Pardew’s approach that, since his arrival, only champions City have fired more shots inside the box than the Selhurst Park side. Whilst a lack of a double Gameweek may deter would-be investors, a schedule that pits them against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four should ensure their short-term prospects remain solid before the fixtures turns nasty in Gameweek 35.

The Talking Point

A three-goal haul against Leicester took Harry Kane to joint second in the overall Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and places the Tottenham youngster 16 points ahead of any other forward.

Given that Kane failed to start a single league match until Gameweek 11, his rise as a Fantasy force is all the more remarkable. Serving up 18 goals and five assists in 20 first XI appearances, he’s proven a fixture-proof option, too, delivering 18, 12 and 11-point hauls against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal since the turn of the year. Putting his form into perspective, Kane has outscored Sergio Aguero by 14 goals to three in this calendar year so far with a series of displays that have persuaded almost 50% of FPL managers to snap up his services.

Even though we have three confirmed double Gameweeks on the upcoming schedule left to play, the issue now is – do we dare to look beyond Kane as a captaincy option? In his last 13 appearances, the 6.4-priced striker has produced seven lots of double figures and has blanked just four times over that run. Whilst Villa and QPR brace themselves for a double Gameweek 31, Kane prepares to square up to a Burnley side with the second worst defensive record in the top flight. Such is his form, there’d be no real surprise if he outscored the likes of Charlie Austin and Christian Benteke – indeed, it’s a sign of his stock that he’s currently neck-and-neck with Austin in this week’s Captain Poll, with 26% of the votes cast apiece.

Looking at Kane’s schedule, there’s arguably just one fixture that could pose problems – in Gameweek 34 away to a Southampton side with ten clean sheets in 16 outings at St Mary’s. Handily, Chelsea already have a double that week, giving us a rare chance to consider alternatives to the Tottenham man.

Even in Gameweek 37, when Arsenal are poised for a double, Kane threatens to cast a shadow over our armband intentions. Given that the Gunners travel to Old Trafford first of all, they could be solely reliant on a home clash against Sunderland to bring in the points. Kane, meanwhile, hosts Hull in the same round of fixtures and, as we’ve seen many times already, is more than capable of destroying any other rival as a reliable captaincy contender.

I'm completely lost with all the DGW shenanigans: when will we know whether Arsenal & Liverpool have a DGW 34, or whether it'll be another GW

With yellows all over the shop, and team in freefall, I'd really like my transfers to count for something, but I've simply lost track

Anyone wiser than me? Not saying much, of course

Arsenal dgw has been scheduled for gw37. No news on the Liverpool dgw yet, they'll have to first beat Blackburn in their FA cup replay match

Arsenal and Sunderland have a DGW37 - mun/SUN for Arsenal, LEI/ars for Sunderland.

We'll know between GW31 and GW32 if Liverpool have a DGW, as that's when they play their FA Cup replay with Blackburn. As to when we'll find out which GW the re-arranged fixture would fall in, it's very difficult to say.

Was set on a very exciting Bellerin to Naughton move this week, but I'm now thinking I will go for it with my 2 FTs instead:

    Sanchez > Mata
    Bellerin > Terry

A nailed on Mata has always been fantasy gold, he's playing very well, and LVG seems happy to have finally found a position for him. AVL/MCI is a great couple of fixtures - I can always re-assess after that. With the blank coming up, it's a question of when I sell the out of form Sanchez, not if, so I might as well take the opportunity now when there's a replacement I'd be happy with.

There are very few viable differentials left at this point in the season, with most teams looking very similar. Doubling up on Chelsea defence, with both Ivanovic and Terry, is one of them. If I save next week, I could always backtrack and get Costa in for the double, but I think they will pick up a huge number of clean sheets as they grind their way to the title over a favourable run in.

It's a worry... They shipped five at Spurs though, then followed it up with back to back clean sheets. I think Mourinho will demand a similar response.

Getting Mata in is a knee jerk. Look at his history, and he is being played on the right of united's midfield which isn't his best position. And you never know when LVG decides to starts ADM instead of Mata. A huge risk for me.

His history in past seasons is actually pretty decent. In the Moyes/LvG era he's done okay while in and out of the side in different positions.

LvG has stated that he think's he's finally found his position that will work well. Additionally (and a Chelsea fan can correct me here) - I believe some of his best FPL scoring was done on the right of a Chelsea 3 behind the striker rather than as a CAM / no.10 that people associate him with?

It could be considered a knee jerk but at the same time might be a decent differential and as you stated with your Giroud comments it's all about getting on the bandwagons at the right time.

ADM is fighting for a position with Young in this current formation, don't think Mata has anything to worry about

By history I meant his recent history, i.e., his last 5 games. He has had 12, 5, 9, 76, 90 mins in his last 5 matches and wasn't involved much in the win against Spurs.

And I am a Chelsea fan and follow them very closely and I can tell you that the season when he was it his best, he didn't play on the right. He was on a free role and kept on popping up wherever he wanted to on the field be it on the right, left or central position.

Jose is a bit more rigid with his formations and stuck him on the right and that's when Mata failed. LVG also isn't giving much freedom to his players to keep the team tight. It's just my opinion but I think Mata is a bandwagon which is bound to fail. He is a top player and I love him as a fan but won't be given the minutes or the freedom.

You might be right about the freedom, although I saw him drift in a few times against Liverpool, he certainly wasn't playing as a winger.

As for the minutes I think in the short term he will get them - we've looked decent against Spurs and Liverpool (something we haven't been able to say much recently) and I see no reason for LvG to change things up.

Fixtures wise though it's not good short term but as Ludo says below - it's not like Sanchez is doing well anyway so it might be worth the risk especially with Villa up next

True about Sanchez, Mata is worth a punt but not someone I'd have high hopes from.

I won't be wishing any luck to Ludo, don't want Bangladesh to knock us out here like they did in the real thing 😀

I think if Di Maria returns, it's in Young's spot.

7 goals and 3 assists for Mata in 20 starts this season - he scores points when he plays.

It's not like Sanchez is scoring anyway...

Thanks for the advice though, it is a risk, but one which I think I'm willing to take.

There was a time in between this season when Mata played for 90 mins every game for a total of 9 games and he got 2 goals and 2 assists in that period. Not exactly someone who will score points whenever he plays.

His 2 goals against Liverpool are not enough to convince me about his Fpl potential in that United side. But that's just my opinion Ludo, you should go with your instinct. He is a nice player and I've been a huge fan since he played for Chelsea (I'm a chelsea fan) but don't think now is the right time to get him

          1. Ludo
            • 10 Years

Appreciate you setting out your reasoning, I'm certainly not without my reservations.

The 2 goals and 2 assists came in the first five of those games - HUL/STO/sou/LIV/avl, which resulted in five wins and a draw.

He then blanked in his next four starts, in which United scored only once, and he was hauled off at half time against QPR.

What I think is the crucial difference now, is that LVG has finally found a system that he can stick with for the rest of the season, and Mata is an integral part of it. When they're doing well with this shape, and scoring goals, he'll keep playing, and have a high level of involvement. If that changes, I can always ship him out, but I just fancy United to go on a good run, and Mata to score well as a result.

Keep Pva. I believe they were unlucky to concede late in last game. Double GW coming up.

Look at your players missing in GW 33 and maybe get some replacements in for Wasi/Walters that have decent games that week?

could sell walters for a dgwer but then you'd have a benching headache so maybe just downgrade walters in order to improve your defense

Work on your defence in my opinion. Get a Southampton player in there asap and just keep him until end of season. I would say also look at the Forster situation and maybe replace Krul if you want to double up. Think that double Southampton will reap rewards until end of season.

Not having Silva is what has backfired for you mate.

          Both of those transfers:
          - Increase point potential (Silva great form and fixtures vs. Sterling playing as wing-back, Myhill playing with good fixtures vs. Foster injured)
          - Fix GW33 issues (currently you have no GK for GW33 and Sterling possibly has a blank as well)

I'd be more inclined to look at shipping Bellerin and keeping 2 FT's in the bank - can't see Arsenal keeping clean sheets against LIV or Bur (and there's no guarantee Bellerin plays) and then the blank.

              Maybe Naughton?

That is a nice idea teammate 🙂

What do you think about getting rid of both Foster and Bellerin with my 2FTs? Going into a double with no players isn't my style. I want at least 1.

I like Myhill (although I have Guzan as well after last GW WC) so I'm not totally convinced by the need to ship Foster. Only reason I did was my WC and WBA away at MCI - but ended up 2pts worse off!

I like to have a backup keeper in case my keeper gets ruled out at the last minute. Have had not so good experiences in the past when I went without a back up.

Is there anyone else you'd suggest to get in for the double instead of Guzan my fellow Lion?

I don't like anyone else for the DGW - I only like Austin if you already have him! Swapping your 5th mid for Sinclair isn't the worst idea provided you can do it for nothing and you are comfortable with who to drop?

The good thing is you have plenty of time to ponder this (or drive you insane)!

Agreed - not convinced of any C/S but always an opportunity for points with their attacking potential

Agreed, especially since it's Clyne+Berty with their attacking potential.

Disagree on doubling down on SOT for this fixture, Everton look on the up. I would go with A/B and C, diversify for this game and then double down for their other easier fixtures in the season.

I'm personally benching Clyne this weekend.

I was thinking the same that's why posted my question here to see the responses. Got a lot of time before making a decision so will think long and hard over this

I would not let attacking returns distract you, Clyne has returns in 4 of the 30 games, Bertrand 5 of 29. So thats a combined 15% of games approx, conversely SOT keep clean sheets close to 50% so that should be the focus and attacking points are a bonus.

There was an interesting thread last night by AUD/GBP Wizard about if you are chasing or being chased. If you double down naturally you are increasing you variability/volatility which can be good if you are trying to catch up. If protecting a lead then I would diversify.

Agree with you on that Guidinho, I'm also of the opinion that defenders should be picked on the basis of their clean sheet potential first and then the attacking points are a bonus.

I'm chasing a top 100 finish so not sure how to categorize myself in terms of a chaser or being chased haha.

Btw, would you be interested in taking part in the FFS Cricket competition? Don't say you don't watch cricket cause it's all about fpl and nothing about cricket 😛

If you are ranked 300 aiming for the top 100 I would say you are more in the conservative territory. I'm of the school of damage limitation personally. I prefer incremental gains (took me 12 weeks to gain 81 places!). Just be calm and plan things with money/transfers for flexibility, a point Simon March talked about in the podcast. I have all my transfers until end of season already planned with the view of emergencies to change that but at least i have a base to work around.

Have a look at the Fantasy Football Fix website, go to the FPL statistics section if you want to get precise ownership figures of players in the top 1k. An example would be that PVA and Panti have a combined ownership of just over 80%, so I expect that a most if not all will play them this weekend at home to NEW without Cisse. On the other hand there are only 4.6% who own both Berty and Clyne. So its a big call, if Newcastle score and SOT dont concede you could make some nice headway but the other way round has a risk. Everton are playing two up top now so they look keen to score despite SOT keeping a tight ship, not to mention being at home. I think we could see a score draw.

I did look at the cricket world cup but I have numerous distractions at the moment so trying not to add to it!

    Pick two to play -

    A) Fonte (eve)

    B) Rose (bur)

    C) Zouma (STK)

    D) PVA (NEW)

Fonte and Rose. Despite how bad Spurs are in defence, Zouma is a potential 1 pointer waiting to happen and a derby game is too unpredictable for my tastes.

Yeah, Zouma is a real problem (and needs to be removed soon). Would obviously like to play him if I knew he's starting.
