Season Review – Team of the Season – Dirk Kuyt

Five gameweeks into the season and Chelsea and Florent Malouda looked unstoppable. The Frenchman was the Fantasy player to have in midfield – 6 goals in 5 gameweeks saw his price rocket to 10.0 from 9.5, with Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt one player who was undoubtedly cleared out to make way for the on-fire winger. By the end of the season however, the situation had reversed spectacularly.

While Malouda’s form petered out, almost in tandem, Liverpool’s industrious Dutchman began to flourish. Circumstances fell for Kuyt as the arrival of Kenny Dalglish and injuries to Steven Gerrard and Andy Carroll handed him new responsibilities and opportunities. Kuyt gobbled them up and ended the season with an extraordinary run of goals to earn his place in our Fantasy team of the season.

The Statistics

Kuyt was initially available for a sum of 9.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, a drop from his 9.5 valuation in 2009/10. Nine goals and 4 assists in that season suggested that Kuyt could offer value but his early campaign did not go well. Liverpool stalled under Roy Hodgson, while Kuyt suffered both ankle and shoulder injuries which restricted him to just four five starts in the opening ten gameweeks. One goal in that spell meant that Kuyt suffered transfer deficits in 9 of the first 11 gameweeks – Fantasy managers had turned their back on Dirk Kuyt.

By the time that Hodgson departed and Kenny Dalglish took the reins, Kuyt’s value had dropped to 8.7. Three goals for the season with just a single assist and zero Bonus Points barely hinted at the transformation which would then take place.

Kuyt scored in Dalglish’s first home fixture in charge in the 2-2 draw with Merseyside rivals Everton but it was not until gameweek 29 that the Dutchman exploded. An incredible hat-trick in the 3-1 over United at Anfield was possibly the high point in Kuyt’s Liverpool tenure. It also marked Steven Gerrard’s last game of the season as the Liverpool skipper bowed out with a groin injury. That was a significant event for Kuyt, who, off the back of his hat-trick, then took over spot-kick duties.

Having already scored from the spot against Everton with Gerrard absent, Kuyt converted three more penalties before the end of the season. Nine goals in the last 9 gameweeks took his season tally to 13 – his biggest league haul in Liverpool colours. An impressive 8 assists and 14 Bonus Points capped a superb spell for the Dutchman and this end of season form duly saw him claim a top four spot in team of the season midfield, ahead of the aforementioned Malouda.

The Prospects

Astute Fantasy managers will not be seduced by Kuyt’s devastating end to the season. Circumstances fell for the Dutchman and with Steven Gerrard set to return to the starting XI and presumably penalty duties, Kuyt will immediately have his goal potential cut. Perhaps more significantly, Andy Carroll will be fit enough to renew a partnership with Luis Suarez that stuttered due to injuries for the big Geordie. That will likely see Kuyt figure in a wider role, perhaps on the right-flank. With goal scoring opportunities perhaps cut then, Kuyt will be a far less attractive proposition. When you couple that with a likely price rise back to 9.5 or even 10.0, Kuyt seems unlikely to attract heavy interest in our initial squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

5/4? I might get on some of that, and its a win win for me personally, if he goes i make money if he doesnt im happy cause it means they dont have a cracking keeper.

Yeah that low price is pretty odd. I was also reading that before hullier left they were insterested in mcgregor but i think he would be the most expensive out the lot, figures of 9-10m are being banded about up here.

someone was asking about Olympic tickets a couple of days ago. By the sounds of it we got 1 ticket, my mate has had £66 taken out of this account. We applied for about £800 worth, between 3 of us. Depending on what that ticket is we might just give it a miss. Probably not worth all the expense and travelling, especially if it's not in the olympic stadium

I got £70 taken out of my account out of a max £2400, so only got tickets for an event which wont be a sell out. I'm actually annoyed that I got one because I think it means I wont get priority for further ballots. 🙁

Has Jose finally lost it! He is making some strange signings, the pressure of catching Barcelona is getting to him.

Sahin, i can understand because he is a big talent. But Callejon & Altintop? They'll struggle to make the bench. And now Coentrao aswell, for 22mil. Great player, but they have Marcelo who was one of their best players last season. Strange signing.

I had the Heat to win by -5.0. Wasnt until last 1/4 they got in front into a 10 point lead, like 10 secs left and Mavricks got a 3 pointer, was close. Also had the Mavricks first 1/4 and won that. Miami are away this time. I fancy them this time.

Probable Swiss line-up for Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier against England, if their most recent training session is to be believed:

    ---------------Benaglio--------------

    Lichtsteiner-Djourou-Senderos-Ziegler

    ---------Behrami-----Inler-----------

    -----Shaqiri---Margairaz---Barnetta--

    ---------------Derdiyok--------------

Frei and Streller's recent early retirement from international football after media criticism of their performances means that Switzerland have lost their main two strikers, and the key FC Basel figures from their internal hierarchy. Hitzfeld has also left out veteran Hakan Yakin from the squad, and so is already starting the much-needed reujvenation of the national team - young strikers Granit Xhaka, Admir Mehmedi and Innocent Emeghar will be on the bench.

They're going to have a good team in a couple of years time when the 2009 U-17 World Cup squad make the breakthrough to the national team. Lichtsteiner, Ziegler, von Bergen, Behrami, Inler, Džemaili and Gelson Fernandes all currently play in Italy.

Logic would say that this team doesn't yet have enough experience to get anything from the England match, or even a fixed shape. Then again, Switzerland have always won the matches no-one expected them to, while stumbling over the easy hurdles. Hitzfeld's team somehow lost at home to Luxembourg in a 2010 World cup qualifier, then beat Spain in a Group H match - before failing to beat Honduras. Could be fun.

lunchtimes are very boring without FPL...

Thinking ahead to the new season, is there anyway to perhaps have a seperate thread running for RMT posts?

I'm all for getting feedback on players especially from the newly promoted teams, but to be fair no-one knows which players are going to turn out to be this years adam or nani, and people get negative comments if their team is not similar to the generic FFS team that naturally evolves over the summer...

I guess it would be quite difficult to maintain (i.e. admins moving posts) but I tend to scroll down the page through the RMT's to read discussion about other things, but hey perhaps thats just me!

But then who would reply to the RMTs!? I can't see many people going onto a RMT thread simply to help answer peoples questions. I prefer the approach you take at the moment. If you don't wanna read them then just skim over them

I agree with Kuqi here, and have thought this would be much better for a few years now. Although maybe most don't agree, I don't know. Whenever I've brought this up in the past someone always replied with what you've said there: "But who would reply to the RMT's?".

To me, it's quite simple, if you're going on a 'RMT thread' to post your team (and hence expect some feedback), then the least you can do is reply to a few other RMT's on there. You scratch my back, I scratch yours. It's not as if people will post their team, and just sit there waiting for responses without looking at, replying to, etc. other RMT's.

Yes, it's also quite simple to just scroll past the RMT posts, but it does get boring/annoying having to constantly scroll through page after page after page of virtually identical teams for a good six weeks or so (especially when, as certain posters do, post their team up, gets 'lost' on the last page, or they make two changes and post it all back up again). Although, I'm sure having two separate threads would split the site somewhat, and would cause extra work for the admins so I could see why Mark and co probably wouldn't want it.

        Anyway, that's my two cents.

Well played tosey cheers for sharing that.

You can lock in some gaurenteed profit with these odds just done a quick bit o math and if you put on

          217 @ 1/2 you get 325.5 back
          92.86 @ 5/2 you get 325.01 back

so your betting just under 310 but guarenteeing 15 profit. Obviously you could increase the stake and it makes it risk free money even if it is only 15 quid.

On a side note, in the tennis, sharapova grunts every shot then the chinese woman says nothing as she plays her shot, very amusing

I'll only be playing 2 defenders, so not going to go big with them. 2 big strikers too, with 1 cheapie is my strategy.

Ho! Didn´t know you could play only 2 defenders...Ok them that sorts some issues but still the budget is too short imo...

A game where one can get the team they want

Basically, through strategic methods one can sell, buy and trade players to get the team they want

You can buy packs as well, and because it requires connection i haven't been able to play on it

I'm getting the bus into town now, as it's not quite 3 I hope I can get into a few schoolgirls while there.

Before I leave I want to tell an honest to God story about my friend (tbf he's more my best mate's mate). I don't know if there is a moral in it, but it really had an effect on me nonetheless. It highlights a very fine line....

He met this girl at work and they were doing lots of flirting and after a few weeks they arranged to go out. She stood him up tho, he was forgetting her but then at a staff party a month later she was all over him and dragged him into the ladies for a fiddle.

The flirting at work resumed and things were building up again, she made all kind of suggestive remarks and got him really built up for their 'wild night'. This continued for months. But when she didn't seem interested in making actual plans again he imploded- he had finally had enough.

He broke into her garden shed and waited for her to come home- he was going to rape her. He started wanking in the shed (!?) to get up for it as he knew she came home at 6pm. He waited but she didn't show, he waited half an hour, wanking in the shed then finally gave up, did a sh*t on her front step and left.

She went to Zumba after work that night.

Some people have such short memories...

The FFS 'team of the season' should be renamed 'team of the final few weeks of the season'.

Absolutely ridiculous. I think its time that voting on site polls is restricted to members - I honestly can't think of any other way in preventing the kids/mongs who don't understand basic terminology from making votes.
