The Promoted – End of Season Report – Norwich City

Two back-to-back promotions for Norwich City means the Premier League welcomes yet another Scottish manager to the fold, as Paul Lambert brings his brand of open, attacking football to the top flight this upcoming season.

A manager in demand, Lambert had already rejected an official offer from Burnley back in January and when West Ham were looking for a new boss after sacking Avram Grant towards the end of May, penned a new, improved 12 month rolling contract along with assistant manager Ian Culverhouse and head of football operations Gary Kars. With their new deals in the bag, Lambert and co. can now concentrate on acquiring players for next season:

“It’s terrific for myself and Ian and Gary. We came here together and we’ve never indicated we wanted to leave at all. I’ve loved my two years at the club. I’m delighted everything has been sorted for the three of us and now we are working on bringing players into the club. We have to try and give the current group a hand, as I have always said.

We want to try and make this club the best it can possibly be. We’ll try and do everything we can to get a foothold in the Premier League and to enjoy it. The fanbase here is tremendous and if you have got them behind you, then you have a chance.”

Defensive improvements seem a certainty; Norwich finished top scorers in last season’s Championship but a glimpse at their Goals Against shows they also had one of the poorest defences, suggesting there should be plenty goals at either end of the pitch should the side continue its adventurous style of play, particularly at Carrow Road.

Here’s a look at the displays that saw them clinch a second-place finish and end the club’s six year top-flight exodus…

Norwich’s approach tends to work better at home, in terms of goal returns; they failed to find the net on only 2 occasions and scored two or more goals in 14 of their 23 games at Carrow Road. They are more prone to conceding at home, though; Norwich’s opponents scored two or more goals a total of nine times and, more alarmingly, Lambert’s side chalked up just four clean sheets in front of their own fans.

There’s a definite tendency to tighten up on the road; Norwich picked up seven clean sheets away from home and conceded two goals less, overall. Home teams may have scored two or more goals in 8 games but Norwich bettered that, scoring two or more 10 times. Only on three occasions did they fail to find the net on their travels, despite scoring 9 goals less than they did at home.

The Manager

Lambert made a somewhat inauspicious start to his managerial career at Livingston but, with years of experience from playing under the likes of Ottmar Hitzfeld at Borussia Dortmund and Martin O’Neill at Celtic, gradually found his feet as a boss. To his credit, Lambert has arrived in the Premier League the hard way, working his way up the lower leagues in England on shoestring budgets and his successes were rewarded with the LMA Championship Manager of the Year award last season.

Norwich tend to play with a narrow midfield diamond that allows Wes Hoolahan job of chief creator. The lack of width places an emphasis on full-backs Russell Martin and Marc Tierney to get forward and Norwich look to start attacks from the back through either of the pair. Lambert encourages his side to keep possession, suggesting they’re more craft and guile than sheer, brute force and such an ethos will be a welcome addition to the Premier League.

Norwich are also known for a never-say-die attitude, bourn of a fitness regime that saw them win a substantial number of points in the final fifteen minutes of games last season. As Lambert explains:

“We train at high intensity. My character is such that I hate getting beaten, and if you are, you go down fighting.”

The club’s subsequent promotion prompted star forward Grant Holt to sum up Lambert and the spirit he has instilled in the club best:

“The manager has been fantastic. He’s a motivator and has been great for us. We’ve worked hard, we’ve a great team spirit and a great desire. It’s a joy being with each other every day.”

The Promoted Squad:

Here’s the lowdown on the main men who helped Norwich achieve promotion last season:

John Ruddy (45 starts, 11 clean sheets) Missing just one league game all season, Ruddy picked up 11 clean sheets for the season and unless Lambert goes looking for a replacement with top-flight experience, will be the number one between the posts again.

Russell Martin (46 starts, 5 goals, 2 assists) The right-back was the only ever-present last season and is an integral member of the Norwich starting XI. Has a real eye for goal, too, finding the net five times in 2010/11.

Marc Tierney (14 starts, 2 sub apps) Signed by Lambert in the January transfer window from his old club Colchester, Tierney has wasted little time in making the left-back his own.

Adam Drury (19 starts, 1 sub app, 1 goal) The veteran was first-choice left-back until the arrival of Tierney and looks set to be a squad player in the upcoming campaign.

Zak Whitbread (20 starts, 2 sub apps, 1 goal)
Ruled out through injury for the first few months of last season, the centre half returned to establish himself as first-choice in the heart of the Norwich back-four.

Elliot Ward (39 starts, 1 goal)
Signed on a free transfer at the start of last season, Ward has firmly established himself as a first-choice centre-back for the Canaries. Missed games from mid-December to the end of January through injury, but was an ever-present, otherwise.

Leon Barnett (25 starts, 1 goal)
Signed on loan in August as defensive cover but was thrown into first-team duties due to injuries. Barnett impressed enough to earn a permanent contract in January but he then succumbed to injury himself and looks set to return to his role as back-up.

Andrew Surman (19 starts, 3 sub apps, 3 goals)
Signed from Wolves last June, the midfielder had a stop-start debut season for Norwich, with knee injuries plaguing his campaign. Lambert was keen to bring him to the club, so there’s a good chance of him cementing a first-team place when fully fit.

Andrew Crofts (44 starts, 8 goals, 6 assists)
The ex-Brighton captain was snapped up by Lambert in May last year and had a stand-out debut season for Norwich. Bombing forward from central midfield, Crofts gets involved in plenty goalmouth action and should grab a handful of goals next season.

Wes Hoolahan (36 starts, 5 sub apps. 10 goals, 9 assists)
Hoolahan is the playmaker at the tip of the Norwich midfield diamond, with the system set up to make the most of his creative talents. Takes most free-kicks and was the club’s first choice for penalty duties, but a couple of missed efforts last season saw him hand penalty duties over to Grant Holt.

David Fox (30 starts, 2 sub apps, 1 goal)
Another player snapped up from Colchester, Fox was on Man United’s books as a youngster and has represented England at youth level. A first-team regular in midfield but his goal returns offer little Fantasy potential.

Korey Smith (19 starts, 9 sub apps. 2 assists)
It’s doubtful whether the midfielder will be anything more than a squad player. Either way, Smith is not the type of player to find his way into many Fantasy squads, offering little goal threat or creativity.

Simon Lappin (20 starts, 7 sub apps. 3 assists)
Was a more prominent member of the first-team the season before last, though Lappin’s appearances were cut short in February when appendicitis ruled him out for a number of weeks. Another midfielder who should cause minimal Fantasy interest.

Simeon Jackson (20 starts, 19 sub apps. 13 goals, 2 assists)
The Canadian forward was signed from Gillingham last July and proved to be a real asset, grabbing some crucial goals for the Canaries; his run of nine in seven games towards the tail end of the season helped Norwich clinch promotion. Looked likely to partner Holt up front but the signing of James Vaughan from Everton now calls that into question.

Chris Martin (21 starts, 9 sub apps, 4 goals)
The striker looks to have slid down the pecking order of late, with both James Vaughan and Simeon Jackson likely to feature in the side ahead of Martin. He could yet force his way into the side if Norwich start to struggle for goals.

Grant Holt (44 starts, 1 sub app, 21 goals, 14 assists)
Player of the Year for Norwich last season, much will depend on Holt’s ability to deal with a step up in class. He’s scored 45 goals in the last two campaigns and will be Lambert’s number one striker, despite never playing at the highest level before. Norwich’s season will rely on his goals more than ever this time round. Expect Holt to give Kevin Davies a close run for Most Fouls by a forward next term; he made 103 last season.

The Potential Targets

Regardless of who ends up at Carrow Road, it’s fairly certain Lambert’s eye for a bargain and unwillingness to fork out huge wages will shape the club’s recruitment drive over the summer, with low-key captures more in line with the Norwich boss’ acquisition policy. Lambert was well aware of the need to add to his squad, admitting after clinching promotion:

“It is not going to be easy, but we have to try to give the current group a hand. Now we can try our best to get players in. We want to try and make this club the best it can possibly be. We will try and do everything we can to get a foothold in the Premier League and to enjoy it.

He wasted little time in identifying a weakness up front, with James Vaughan already moving from Everton as his first signing of the close season. The Norwich boss was keen to point out Vaughan’s top-flight experience as a fundamental factor in the deal, suggesting this may be a policy the Canaries revisit over the next few months:

“I think the great thing about him is he has played at Premiership level before, he knows what it is all about, he is only 22 and hopefully his best years are in front of him. That is the beauty about him – he has done it at that level, he knows what it is, he just has to be consistent with it.”

Lambert has since added another forward to his squad, with the capture of Millwall’s Steve Morison for an undisclosed fee. Having already had two or three bids for the player’s services rejected, Lambert showed a determination to get his man and Morrison -who bagged 17 goals in the Championship last term- also handed in an official transfer request in order to quicken up the move.

The Canaries have also bid for Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass rejected in the few days or so, but Lambert seems set to return with an improved offer for his compatriot. Meanwhile there are reports that a bid for Brighton’s assist machine Elliot Bennett has been accepted with the winger set to join the Carrow Road revolution.

There will be plenty more names linked with the club throughout the season, with Lambert’s German connections even bringing the name of Miroslav Klose to the fore, though the Norwich boss laughed off the rumour as nothing more than media speculation.

Peterborough’s Craig Mikail-Smith scored 35 times last season and, out of contract this summer, has already been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Posh boss Darren Ferguson confirming there is definite top-flight interest.

Hull’s Jimmy Bullard has been linked with a move, despite playing for arch-rivals Ipswich on loan at the end of last season. Bullard’s previous Premier League experience certainly fits the bill, though his current £45K per week will be a stumbling block. Man United’s Darron Gibson and Danny Guthrie of Newcastle are both out of favour at their respective clubs and could revive their careers with a move to Carrow Road.

Henri Lansbury‘s successful spell last term has prompted suggestions Lambert may be ready to ask Arsene Wenger for a season-long loan this time round; with Wenger keen to see his youngsters pick up vital experience, there’s every possibility this move could happen.

With 58 goals conceded in a lesser league last season, tightening up at the back will be a priority and Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster has experience of playing at Norwich under Lambert, with a loan spell two seasons ago. Forster spent last season on loan at Celtic and with a job on his hands to win the Newcastle keeper’s jersey from Steve Harper and Tim Krul, has been linked with a return to the Canaries, either on loan or on a permanent basis. Man United defender Ritchie de Laet is another who has been linked with a temporary move, having impressed while on loan at Portsmouth last term.

Lambert does tend to make most of his signings early in the summer, though, which will hopefully put paid to months of endless speculation between now and the end of August.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Went back to Blackops this week after playing a LOT of MW2 in the last few weeks. It is a horrible game.

I actually really liked the story on Blackops but lets be honest, we buy CoD for online. All the guns sound like pellet guns or something on Blackops, and it's not smooth in the slightest.

I mainly play hardcore search and on Blackops it's terrible.

Are there any games that are so awesome that you can only get on a PS3 that you can't get on 360?

I fancy buying a PS3 but not really sure why, considering I have a 360 I only seem to use for MW2 and a Wii that I forget I usually have 🙂

They're not far enough apart, no. Technically a PS3 could offer an improved experience, but in reality, the biggest difference is the 1080p, blu-ray, and the exclusives (both ways) that really make the difference.

Best way to decide: Have you got a Blu Ray player, an HD TV, and what have your mates got?

Yeah this was always a big plus, the Blu Ray player. But these days you can pick up Blu-ray players for a hell of a lot cheaper than the PS3. Not got a proper HDTV. It is HD but only 1080i with component only. I bought it before HDMI was standard.

Most of my mates that play games regularly have all 3 consoles or at least both a PS3 and 360.

I suppose if I buy a PS3 with Fifa 11 I can get my ass kicked by everyone on here

I'm really a bit non-plussed at the prospect of a Sneijder deal. His wage bracket would destroy our current wage structure (although admittedly the rooney saga may have already done that) and I can see his price being inflated beyond all reason if City pursue him.

I'm not sure he can. Roy Keane did all Scholes defensive work when they played 442. Carrick or Fletcher don't have that sort of box to box ability. Sneijder has always played in a 433, and as the AM. I don't think he has a defensive bone in his body.

He doesn't have to play every game jeez. You saw how he got found out against Arsenal, and Barcelona. More teams will be onto him in the prem next season. I can't see him making the same impact as this year.

If Sneijder comes, Fergie will find a way of playing both him and Rooney in the same 11, and getting the best out of both, and also using Hernandez wisely. He's still young.

Remember Rooney's return to form came with his partnership with Hernandez. I'm not saying he'll play every game, but if you are going to spend all that money on Sneijder he'd expect to be playing most games! I agree the 442 isn't the formation to play away against AFC etc but we have Anderson and Cleverley who could play in the 433/451 without spending £30m+

IMO SAF will play the 4411 again at home next year and 451 away from home.

I'd still prefer Modric to Sneijder 🙂

Hes a top notch player so I think he can do a great job in any position, as well I think fletcher could be a good partner for him!
(or ah,,,de rossi, could be a great summer :P)

but like you said Fergie has a plan, and at the moment united are in a real power position.

Barca are the biggest team in the world, from 1-11 (except for LB) there team is pretty mich sown up with the likely addition of fabregas) so any others start looking in, have to think, i cant play there, but at united there a few spots up for grabs and they have been in 3/4 finals, its a real oppourtunity club at the moment
The only other club, madrid, also has too many stars

so the way I see it, any player we want , we will get!

yeah, but I own about a billion SF games, and this one doesn't add nearly enough to justify it. Capcom were really pushing it with Super IV so soon, but this is almost a repeat of what they did with 2.

Anyway, I have Super IV and IV, I'm not interested in Arcade unless they give me a free copy.

ALSO while I have yeah soop, the movies, supposedly all crap except one anime? Have you seen it, i went looking on imdb and there are so many i got confused, which one am i looking to download? street fighter 2 i think my buddy said , but even that doesnt narrow it too much!

Yeah, Street Fighter II - the Animated Movie is the really good one.
There may be others I'm not aware of, there's a load of off-shoot series.

If I was you, for the game, go for Super IV, the last release. It was cheap on release anyway, will be cheaper now, and it has most of the fighters from the new one, and lots more than IV.

              Just Street Fighter?

Hmm. Are we basing this on me playing a match, compliments of skill, or mythically, how effective/awesome they'd be?

Because in the last case Ryu and Ken are both there. and the last one... Gah, I'm used to having Marvel characters there too. Guy as the last one.

And in a tournament, Ken, maybe Balrog (Vega in England) and... Rolento just for kicks. or Ryu maybe.

capcom vs snk on the ps2
and i always found rolento weak, is he any good?

                I think id go

                1. Ryu 2. Cammy 3. Sagat
                Importantly in that order!

Decent option from the bench but why make a move when you know you are going to be on the bench?

You don't watch many Utd games. He doesn't switch with Valencia as Valencia is the most one footed player in the history of the world. Nani has played Left wing since AV's return from injury and his form has dramatically dropped off.

I don't think Young would be a first choice player at Utd - Valencia, park and Nani would all potentially be ahead of him in the wide positions. I would see him as back up, although United rotate a lot so he would get games.

I also wonder whether they have another target (e.g. Sanchez) but Young is their fallback if that dosn't come off.

The priority though is central midfield. Everyone seems to be talking about Modric OR Schneider. Personally I would take both - they are not mutually exclusive and don't really play the same role. Essentially, Schneider is like Scholes in his early days whereas Modric is like a latter day Scholes. I think they could play in the same team. Plus both are better than any of United's cuurent central midfield options...Fletcher, Carrick, Gibson, Anderson and an ageing (by the day!) Giggs. I would happily sacrifice any of them to make way.

Its a tough decision, two big stars could benefit our midfield no end, but that would suffer the progress of players like Anderson, Cleverly and others who I think have a real shot.
We spent big bucks on Ando, and he still hasnt had a nice preseason to build his fitness yet.
I hope hes not called up to the Brazil team, gets some big preseason under his belt and has a super year...

Him, cleverly and one new signing rotating would suit me fine, with fletch in the other mid spot

Like I said, sell players to make way...

Get rid of Carrick, Fletcher and Gibson if need be - none of them are good enough against the best teams (aka Barca). Giggs will play a bit part role anyway. Still lots of opportunities for Anderson (who I think still has a chance) and Cleverley (when he is not injured)

Not saying he is worth £15M yet but when you see players like Wickham and Oxlade-Chamberlain having £10m price tags put on them it makes this deal look very good.

Hopefully he will prove himself at Sporting as he has looked very lively whenever I've seen him play.

You're right those valuations are ridiculous. However van Wolfswinkel has had a couple of alright seasons, but Björn Vleminckx scored a lot more goals than him this season in the same league and has just moved for €1.8m

Mateja Kezman and Afonso Alves also scored lots of goals in the Eredivisie though. Doesn't make you a good player. Van Wolfswinkel looks like more than just a goalscorer from what i've seen.

Those names always get banded about to beat the eredivisie, I would say that they are both better players than van Wolfswinkel though having seen him for the last 2 years. We will see in a year or 2 but for me he is too lightweight. Hopefully he is more than just a goalscorer because quite a few of those goals come from the spot.

Yeah I understand the whole financial rules coming in means this summer is the summer where teams will want to spend spend spend but do we NEED to spend the money as you say? Really?

United have the best squad in the EPL imo and one of the best in Europe. They also have some of the best youngsters in the league. The team, as is, is good enough to win more titles and get to more European Cup finals. No amount of spending will get us to Barcelona's level so is there a NEED to spend? Not really, it's a choice.

I know exactly what you mean, but with so much experience leaving the side in the next year or so, I think we need to bring in a couple more players.

Not saying that the young talent in our squad isn't enough, I just think we need a bit more depth and now is the time to secure it.

Maybe we won't get to Barca's level, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Barca have a relatively small squad, too, a couple of injuries to key players and they might struggle a bit.

Saying that, you just know that La Masia is stuffed with tiki-takaing 17-year-olds ready to slot into the first team squad...

You need a few new players for sure. You need quality replacements for VDS and Scholes, you need quality competition in your squad generally as I dont think that Anderson, Gibson, Obertan, Bebe, Carrick, are good enough. You need a better defensive mid than Fletcher, or at least more quality competition for that role as Hargreaves is going.
The Berbatov and Nani issues need sorting too, if they leave they need to be replaced. Smalling looks a good prospect so you should be pretty alright in defence.
All in all you need to spend this summer.

Agree with all of that apart from Anderson. 😉

Our central midfield needs fresh blood if we're going to compete with a Hiddink-managed Chelsea. Hopefully Nani will stay so we'd only really need a goalkeeper (De Gea) and one of Sneijder/modric/de rossi/.

Should only set us back £65 million then 🙄

Oh and Berba's definitely staying ATB 😉

Admittedly he has had a bit of a poor season, partly due to injury, but in the previous two seasons he's shown himself to be very good going forward.

Plus, he's scored 4 goals in his last two appearances. 😉

If Lucas played for United he'd be similarly loved. Anderson is ok, he has his moments but I don't think he is good enough for a top four or five side.

Lucas has had a good season and is like Anderson in terms of being judged off previous seasons, the stats back up how well Lucas has played but people still think he's rubbish as he wasn't used properly or appreciated previously. I'd rather have Lucas than Anderson.

Was he? Or were Arsenal as a team shown up? He can't do it all on his own, he did have a few injuries and also isn't best used out wide IMO.

Love it when people say that Carrick and Anderson aren't good enough. They've both played major parts in winning the Premier league 4 times and been in the CL final 3 times in the last 4 years. If that isn't good enough, what is exactly?

Gibbo, Obertan and Bebe, yes they are poor. Ridiculous to bundle Carrick and Ando in with them.

Cleverley should and will replace gibbo as the back up midfielder next season. He offers far more than just 5 long range shots a game. You can't teach Bebe natural technical ability - as he has none. Obertan is the same, not good enough.

A very happy chelsea fan looks like hiddink going 2 be manager.

Would like Zola 2 come in as assistant with a view 2 take over in 2 or 3 years with Hiddink going upstairs.

In fairness though, Avram Grant did alright at chelsea and managed to get them and Pompey relegated (ok, harsh on the latter).

The point is not always "how good is the manager" but "does this manager suit our infrastructure".

It's all well and good to float around from league to league managing great teams while never really setting the world on fire, but if Roy hodgeson can do better than expected at Fulham, underperform at Liverpool, and wind up at West Brom, or if Rafa can be in the same team and have such varied results, it basically points to me that:

Because you can manage team A well, you might not necessarilly manage team B well
Because team A is a top ranked side anyway, whoever manages them usually does pretty good as long as he doesn't sell all the players and swap around positions
That anyone who has sucessfully managed several teams well is in the minority
And that if you're doing a good job where you are, probably best to wait for them to fire you, rather than go to a "more prestigious club" and end up a short time later at West Brom.

How good the infrastructure is with or without a manager is probably the most important aspect is it not? Poor managers like Avram Grant can succeed at clubs like Chelsea because the infrastructure is already so good. At Pompey and West Ham his skills in the transfer market and as a motivator in the dressing room were tested to the full and he resoundingly failed on both occassions.

Managers have a short shelf life. I understand why Mark Hughes left his post at Fulham for this reason. May as well try and get a better job (at a better club with a better infrastructure) while your stock is high because in most cases the only way is down.

On the flip side you've got Martin O'Neill, Tony Pullis and Roy Hodgson, who are or were doing an above average job.

It would take someone with massive delusions of grandeur (see Blackburn) to fire the manager of a mid-table club where they're consistently in the top half of the middle table.

Because otherwise you're asking them to rival the established heirarchy, which doesn't happen in the premier league (overnight and these days without a large budget).

              Exactly Soop. Couldn't agree more.

O Neill and Pulis for me are great managers who did above average jobs with the infrastructures they had. Hodgson is also a good manager but his failure at Liverpool is the real conundrum though? If it was a good set-up why did he fail so badly? or did the in fighting before New England Sports Ventures arrived negate the advantages of Liverpool's above average infrastructure? Or was he simply not a good fit and used to being the manager of the underdog?

Anyways, it takes people with crazy money to come in and completely revamp the infrastructure of clubs AND a good manager to take them to the next level. A good manager can only do so much on his own.

    Liverpool Lowdown

Joe Cole's move from Liverpool to Spurs is set to go through this week after the two clubs agreed a £3million fee. So should really lose anything on him.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish made a new £18.5 million bid for Sunderland's England U21 midfielder Jordan Henderson on Sunday.

Liverpool and Arsenal are in touch with Barcelona over signing unwanted forward Bojan.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is thought to be considering a double move for Liverpool pair David Ngog and Christian Poulsen.

TBH we need a player to step into Gerrards boots in 3 years. He is English and has premier league experience. Is bidding that wrong, it just means we have everything tied up before the end of European championships, prices rocket if players have good games. 18.5 million is not too bad compared to the price some clubs pay these days. That price has been driven by Man Utd interest. Not sure when we were after the same player as UTD.

I rate Henderson really highly as a young talented english midfielder - but £18.5m - NO.
There is better value out there than £18.5m.....how much would Ramsey cost or Wiltshire?

We paid over the top for Carrol albeit a good english striker.

That said £12m for Adam is not VFM either!
