Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Anyone not getting Given? I think he's a good price at 5m but I prefer my front 8 if I get two 4.5m goalkeepers

I don't mind all the RMTs, gives me some good ideas...sometimes I reply as well to them if there are similar issues. They are pretty quick to scan through.

Good to see what the concensus is as well.

Don't think de Vries will get game time, Jags could be good if he moves to Arsenal, I think Simpson is better value than Shorey and .5 cheaper, I wouldn't go anywhere near Everton personally - at least not yet, I'm definitely considering all the rest tho.

Barton at home, possibly on pens, against Arsenal...is surely goal and bonus o'clock. I'd play him over premier new boy who is away at Man City Sinclair.

Arteta should be swapped immediately...loads of good cheaper options like Ohara, sessegnon out there....could free up some money to swap Jags for a chelsea defender.

Over the first few weeks I think Kompany plus a Chelsea def is a good call.

your thoughts on the following please:

Simpson (Newc) - good value, but just cant bring myself to invest in Newcastle defender.
Arteta - will he ever be the same again?
Rodallega - seems to still be relatively good value at 6.5m
    Agbonlahor - what's his story?

simpson @ 4mil is very good 4a bench filler.
Arteta... i hope so! a great player when fully fit.
rodallega will be hard to leave out esp. if/when n'zogbia leaves.
agbonlahor: page 1 will help you with the question on him, i asked d same & got some good feedback.

Simpson - a very cheap defender who starts in an established premier league side. One of the first names in my squad as bench fodder enabling money to be spent elsewhere.
Arteta - Got me loads of points a few seasons ago but hasn't been getting the points in since. Not worth it from the start but if he hits form you know what to do.
Rodallega - Undecided, Wigan may suffer if N'Zog goes but if so Rodellega will be involved in evertything and may take over getting all the bonus points if they can get any results.
Agbonlahor - If he plays could be good value but Bent would probably have to be injured for it to be worth it.

                  and also:

"Chicharito hit such good form that you had to put him in every game. It was unfortunate for Berbatov. It didn’t make him a bad player, he was just an unlucky player that this lad came in."

To me that says, if he keeps his form, he plays.

Nice midfield maybe Bent instead of Drogba.
Wouldnt start off with Skrtel fixtures no the best.
Maybe huth or a cheeper defender.
S Taylor or Bramble instead of Figueroa.

        Cheers for the ideas....

Drogba he was the one player I was tempted to get rid of... Bent was an Idea... I was waiting to see what happened over at City with Tevez/Aguero... Did think of Balotelli....

Skrtel was another worry, but with Liverpools 4-2-3-1 formation from last season I think they will keep plenty of clean sheets. As for Huth had a one season wonder and for £6m is expensive... (Other ideas were one of the de silva twins, or Gibbs at Arsenal)

Wigans first 6 fixtures are favourable and could be used to switch with Skrtel when they play tougher teams (I already have Simpson on bench therefore wouldn't want to double up on Newcastle.

Silva was one of the first names on my team sheet, but second guessing if he's worth the 1.5 over Yaya.

I was about to ask this question.
Yaya got more points per game (just) last season and is so much cheaper. Statistically you have to go for him and you can upgrade another midfielder by 1.5m
Problem is I really wanted Silva!!

I'm not getting all the Van Persie and Suarez hype. Arsenal's fixtures aren't the best and form doesn't always follow through to the next season.

They aren't though, you go on about captain choices but will you captain Van Persie through his poor fixtures? I picked Hernandez because I basically want Man Utd coverage seeing as they are the best team in the league. I'm probably going to change to Rooney though.

Your reasons for not picking RVP are poor fixtures and form doesn't carry over to the next season...
Hernandez faces Tottenham, Arsenal & Chelsea in the first 6 games of the season. So i was just asking why pick Hernandez? I would definitely spend a bit more and get Rooney. I would never feel comfortable captaining Hernandez, that's just my preference though.

Zamora and Ba at that price are probably the two best around imo and they have reasonably nice early fixtures. I want some Man Utd coverage which is why I have Hernandez in, I might change to Rooney though.

Gibbs - Arsenal don't keep many clean sheets.... look at Hughes (Fulham)

Young - £10m on a player that MIGHT start and United have a tough 1st 6 games... (I'd look at the first 6 fixtures)

Hernandez - " " " " (Look at Zamora, or Doyle at Wolves...
