Technical Area

The Technical Area- A Look at Nasri & Silva

While Edin Dzeko’s four goals stole the show in Man City’s incredible 5-1 win at White Hart Lane, Fantasy managers would have been very aware of one other significant aspect of yesterday’s game- David Silva’s failure to play a part in any one of the away side’s goals.

Silva had been a sensation in his side’s first two games of the season but three assists from Samir Nasri at Spurs has many a Fantasy manager wondering whether his returns will be reduced as a result of the Frenchman’s acquisition. A look at Silva’s chalkboards from City’s last two games suggests that, while there is a definite difference to his play in each game, it’s far from a negative one.

One aspect of Silva’s returns so far worth noting is he has yet to make an assist in any game so far this season; James Milner grabbed two assists in the game at Bolton and there wasn’t any fear of his returns being diminished after the game at the Reebok.

Two goals and, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), four Bonus Points have come the playmaker’s way, so from a creative perspective, little has changed; a look at our Members Area shows Silva still had his fair share of key passes yesterday. Silva had four shots against Spurs, the same number as he had at home to Swansea and one more than he managed at Bolton in Gameweek 2.

Silva’s heat maps from the Bolton (above) and Tottenham (below) games, however, highlight how much more central he was in the opponent’s half yesterday compared to the game at the Reebok.

His passing heat maps again confirm that Silva played more through the middle and drifted wide far less- he made 70 passes against Owen Coyle’s side, with 49% of his passes coming from the wings. At Spurs, he saw almost as much of the ball, making 67 passes, with 35% of those played from the flanks- a significant drop.

Indeed, the heat maps merely back up the idea that Silva will continue to be at the heart of City’s play, dropping deep and orchestrating matters, while getting forward into dangerous areas much the same- the only real issue is how much more of a danger Nasri will be in comparison.

With Silva priced at 9.6 in FPL and Nasri 9.5, it’s a quandary that may only become apparent as the season unravels, though the fact that two of the latter’s assists came from out wide certainly boosts his appeal; Dzeko has shown that with quality service from the flanks, he’ll score plenty.

Nasri v Tottenham, Milner v Bolton

Nasri’s move to the Etihad Stadium certainly suggests he should be a stronger Fantasy prospect than he was at Arsenal last term. Incredibly, he picked up just one assist over the course of last season and has already tripled that tally in his City debut. When it comes to goal attempts, though, it’s worth noting that he had just two shots yesterday- half the number of shots as David Silva.

A comparison of Nasri’s passing with James Milner’s (in the same role) in the previous game is revealing. The number of passes each player made was almost identical -Nasri made 76 and Milner 74- but in terms of pass success, there was a substantial difference- Nasri made only 5 stray passes compared to Milner’s 17, as City kept possession far better with the Frenchman on board.

Taking it a step further, Nasri made just three unsuccessful passes in the Spurs half yesterday, all from corners; in open play, then, he didn’t give the ball away once in his opponent’s half. Milner, on the other hand, made sixteen unsuccessful passes in the Bolton half.

It backs up a quote from this article by Simon Kuper. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

In addition to excelling out wide, Nasri was prepared to drop deep and play central far more than Milner and his link-up play with Silva looked promising yesterday- he played 19 successful passes to Silva and received 15 successful passes in return from the Spaniard. Against Bolton, Silva played 12 passes to Milner and received just 10 back, more or less half Nasri’s tally- an indication the new boy is more on the same wavelength.

Clearly, City are a more cohesive and dangerous side with Nasri in the first XI. His addition to the City line-up makes Mancini’s side a much more dangerous team, with attacking moves far less likely to break down. With Dzeko and Serio Aguero both benefiting from his service, Spurs have already found out just how much of a difference he has made.

Stand firm. He's dropping like a stone, granted, but I have a cunning plan to spread the good word regarding his form, also, seeing as he is now on penalty duty 😉 his price will rise again ........... if you see what I mean. On a more serious note, I have him now, I don't like it, but it is what it is. I'm going to give him a couple of weeks to get his head straight and see if he can't find some form against Sunderland. Hat tricks all over the shop. Torres up next for some glory.

Madness keeping him unless Moyes declares he is fully fit and will definitely play next game.

And Moyes is one of the least open of managers in this respect so the odds of that happening are zero.

I don't like so much my defense line.

    Any suggestion:

    R.Tylor, Bosingwa, Hughes (N.Teylor, Gabbidon)

My plan selling Bosigwa (will have no cover of Chelski, but however) and bring in Shawcross, Enrique, Hangleland or someone more reliable. Prise range below 5.5 for defender!

      I don't like it.

It reaks of chasing last weeks points.

Orr has no chance of playing now that Luke Young has been brought in. I think he was dropped for K Dyer in GW1 too.

Ferguson sucks considering he will rarely play.

Moses sucks because... well he's just Moses, and he has terrible fixtures to boot. He will do stuff now and again, but it will be when he's on your bench.

Is anyone else going without Man Utd cover for the next few weeks?

Their fixtures don't look too clever: bol, CHE, stk, NOR, liv, MCY, eve

But then I thought that about: wba, TOT, ARS

    ...and look what happened.

Surely these 'freak' results have to tend towards the norm soon don't they, else Rooney and Young will end up with 70 goals and 60 assists between them come the end of the season!

There was nothing freak about smashing 3 and 8 past Tottenham and Arsenal. Although i don't expect the latter result to happen again for a while, but it shows we're capable of scoring with every attack.

Our fixtures are fine, and if you go without, then by the time we get to GW 11, where United have an amazing run of good fixtures, you'll want the likes of Young and Rooney, yet they'll be too expensive. Also with their high ownership, you'd sink right down in the rankings when either of the aforementioned players did something significant.

You can carry on without united defensive cover, but i'd advise getting some attacking cover, because i can see us scoring in every game with the way we're playing right now.

I'm sorry, but scoring 8 goals is a bit of a freak occurrence. It doesn't happen all that often, even for Man Utd. They beat Ipswich 9-0 and Nottingham Forest 8-1, but they were a while ago. There was Blackburn 7-1 last year too.

If Young and Rooney's shooting is a bit off, then you can chalk off both Young's efforts, and also Rooney's two freekicks.

That would then make it 4-2 with Arsenal missing a penalty, and we might have all been saying what a classic end-to-end game the encounter was, where a depleted, youthful Arsenal gave it their all but ultimately succumbed to United's brilliance.

You have to admit that it was unlucky for Arsenal that young and Rooney had their shooting boots on and punished them clinically.

Purely the fact that players just cannot maintain that level of accuracy. No players can keep on doing this.

Think of how many long-range efforts go into row Z, or that sail just over the bar, or just past the post, or on target but easily saveable for the keeper.

Man Utd kept on hitting the top corner with most of their efforts, rendering them virtually unsaveable.

This won't keep happening, trust me.

Nah, I'm going to pass for the next few games and re-evaluate after GW6.

Man Utd won't even score 2 or 3 every game either. That translates to 120+ goals considering their start. That would be a new record, and while it's possible that they could do this, a large proportion of these 120 goals will come between GW11 and GW23, and between GW28 and GW37.

We are talking about Man Utd - the premier league champions. Fixtures mean nothing as shown already, whose to say Arsenal-Swansea won't finish 0-0? The same team (Utd) that won all but 1 of their home games last year (West Brom 2-2). Rooney, Young & Nani will score & assist loads but obviously won't score 8 every week but Utd will score in the majority of their games.

    Kenny Vorm

Bosingwa STaylor Ward De Laet Simpson

    Young Walcott Nasri Petrov NDyer

    Aguero Dzeko Rooney

Horrendous start so I'm going with a more aggressive policy with a cheap as chips defense and 6 heavy weights. Theory is that lots of mid table teams look reasonable defensively so the likes of Ward and Taylor may keep clean sheets/score goals/get bonus and I have may attackers from teams who will score a few goals.

I wildcarded (and have got some nice possible profits in one night. From 100.1 to 100.8).

Opinions on these changes / possibilities:
    (1) Silva to Nasri (especially if Silva rises to 9.7 so I can bank the profit)
    (2) Is Adam worth it? Gerrard might be back to form in few weeks.
    (3) Not sure about Chelsea attacking cover (fwd/mid). Lamps is too expensive, Malouda seems a waste of money and I'm not yet sure about Mata.

Punt on Walcott is tempting but he has played badly (both in PL and against Udinese). He might get a goal, but can't see him racking up a great deal of points and low scores are possible as well. I think that in same price category there are more consistent options (Silva/Nasri, Adam, Young, even Nani).

hmmm...is it consensus that FPL are now freezing prices on Sat and Sun nights now? Think that's twice it's happened? Rather frustrating as i did Torres -> Aguero on Sat night as i was sure Torres was going to drop (and had 0 spare cash). I would have obviously liked to have waited until Sunday, when i could have happily knee-jerked and done:
    Torres -> Dkeko
    Nzogbia -> Young
    DAMN YOU FPL!

I think prices will start to fluctuate on Saturday and Sunday as well. Seems like they had a problem with their updating script that was running all night, prohibiting the price script to run.

Prices went up on Saturday - Boswinga, Klasnic, Suarez, Jarvis went up. Sunday night there seemed to be an issue where no-one could log in so FPL Towers didn't process the price changes. There's no price-freeze policy on certain days, as far as I can see.

to be honest, if my prices changed anymore I wouldn't be able to afford Dzeko and Walcott so I've just made the transfers now. If either of them get injured in the international break I'll just reward myself with a Wildcard 🙂

      I think I deserve it after the 3 weeks I've had 😉

Do Liverpool really need someone like Benayoun? They've spent loads on players in his position- whether they needed to is another matter, but they've got more Benayouns than Meireleses right now.

Would appreciate some thoughts on my predicament. Had a shocking start (108 points), last in my mini league (75 points behind leader - luckily there are no big-hitters in my £ league yet) after lording it over everyone having run away with it last season, getting my comeuppance now!

Anyway I'm reluctant to wildcard, having enjoyed limited success in past seasons using it early on, and a lot of success last season saving it for DGWs. I've used my one free transfer already to do Torres to Dzeko before the rises. Team as follows:

    Given, Ruddy
    Enrique, Kompany, Hughes, Brown, Simpson
    Nani, Brunt, Barton, Sessegnon, Moses
    Suarez, Bent, Dzeko

    4.8 in the bank

Nervous at not having Rooney, but at the same time he isn't going to run wild every week, and Utd have a few tough-ish fixtures coming up. Plus, getting him in now won't help me make up any ground, as everyone else has him. Tempted to take a hit on either Walcott or RVP for their easy fixtures.

Anyone think a 4 pointer for RVP (Bent out) or Walcott (Sess out) is worthwhile? Or should I just hit the WC button? Or just play the patient game? Confused!

keep the wildcard mate, your team aint bad, and i'd rather wc on dgw's too, that'll give you more chance of catching leaders too, i'd wait 10 days or so and if you think neccessary after the internationals gamble on either walcott or Rvp,

So I've used my WC as have many others, 2nd bottom of my mini league after top 3 past few seasons...

    Given (Vorm)
Kompany, S. Taylor, Bosingwa (De Laet, Shotton)
    Young, Mata, Walcott, Silva (Ferguson)
    Suarez, Hernandez, Best

My thinking behind hernandez is if wellbeck is out for ~5 weeks he should be getting his game... Also best seems a decent 5m prospect as graham isn't getting anything.

Yeah I'm quite unsure on hernandez, I really need a gem that no one has in my league to catch up on points, might try and bring in RVP for him instead as RVP's value has dropped .1, although even in the 8-2 beating walcott looked like he had a lot of passion and played well... Ahh so tough decisions lol.

I think Arsenal will come out fighting against Swansea. It's like when a medium sized kid at school gets battered by a big kid. What does he do? Goes and batters a wee kid. On this theory Swansea are getting it. So, RVP I guess. I am mindful, however, that if I stuck in RVP I wouldn't be able to get Rooney. Hmmmmmmmmm.

I'm looking at RVP and Dzeko as alternatives for Torres. Dzeko is the preferred option right now, even though I don't want to jump on the bandwagon. It's mainly because he frees up funds to boost my midfield. I can get rid of Lampard and Larsson to get Nasri and Young. It involves an 8 point hit though. Blah.

You've had a marginally better start than me, though I imagine not as good as you'd hoped. A couple of hits may be the lesser of two evils if you want to save your WC. What I want to avoid is hits for players that all my rivals already have, such as Rooney. Young isn't going to do that every week so I'm thinking Walcott and RVP to try and get some early-season differentials.

Sky Sports are reporting that Inter Milan left-back Davide Santon is having a medical at Newcastle.

Red alert for Ryan Taylor! Having said that he has started impressively this season so maybe they will accommodate him elsewhere. The defence has not looked too bad this year either (although could easily have conceded a few more on Sunday), so maybe he’ll keep his place for now ahead of Santon.

Drop Simpson I say! Not a footballing basis, merely because I have plenty of rivals with Simpson! Would be interested to hear what Attila or TT have to say on the matter if Santon does indeed sign.

Both R. Taylor and Simpson are under threat if Newcastle sign Santon. He started off as a wide forward, converted to a right-back, and then Mourinho played him as a left-back at Inter. So it’s anyone’s guess as to which flank Pardew would play him on.

Here’s a good article by Paolo Bandini on the rise and fall of Santon’s career so far:

Good link Pompey bubble. Pardew looks to have an adaptable player anyhow, so Ryan Taylor and Simpson need to be on their toes. Ryan's namesake or Krul seem the best way into the Magpies defence then.

Well he hasn't signed yet and although it looks likely you never quite know with our board.
The versatility of Santon means both Simpson and Raylor are under threat of rotation. Much depends on whether a proper left back comes in though (both the Pieters and Cissokho deals appear to have failed).
Although Raylor has been great with set pieces, his defensive positioning is pretty poor so he could lose his place. However he has been playing better than Mr Average Danny Simpson so he could keep his place. I can't quite see Santon being thrown straight in, so maybe you could hang on to Raylor/Simpson for the moment.
Personally I'm on a wildcard, Simpson is coming out and Steve Taylor is coming in. Taylor is a better FPL prospect all round and the extra security of starts is worth the 0.5.

      Ps
If Santon was to be valued at 4 I'd certainly be tempted. Any more than that then naah.

I can’t see him being priced at 4mill, wishful thinking there Attila! Though I would gladly eat my words if proved wrong. I’m on a WC too so Ryan Taylor stays for now, would be good to sneak another .1 out of him for a rise. I had hoped for no defensive signings by the Toon, I’d love to have both Taylors for that home game with Blackburn. Ryan Taylor is a bit like Glen Johnson in ways, pretty useful going forward yet you often watch through your fingers when your team is under pressure – Waiting for the ballsup. I guess with Barton leaving Ryan’s dead ball skills he will always have potential even with limited pitch time.

Well I have Raylor for the moment as well again hoping for another rise, then he joins Bosingwa in the 'cheers for the profit now piss off club'.
Raylor just isn't a defender, he can do an adequate job as a RB but is just about treading water as a LB so I'm glad they're looking to get a proper fullback in.
Also if Raylor is on the bench then that means all the more set pieces to Cabaye, which is a good thing for my FPL side. 🙂

I don't think they'd put Santon at 4, I think he will be at 5, shame as he wouldn't be worth a punt then.

Dzeko might be joining too, haven't made my mind up on him yet.

Ha! I like that club too – Though I may keep Bos. Sunderland can’t score goals and he has some decent fixtures too if you overlook the visit to OT of course. Then again Chelsea were wobbling big style against Norwich so maybe there are better options.

    Source: L'Equipe
    http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2011/20110830_101313_mertesacker-serait-gunner.html

Per Mertesacker aurait signé lundi soir à Arsenal. Le défenseur central international allemand arrive du Werder Brême. (Per Mertesacker is believed to have signed on Monday evening for Arsenal. The German central defender will arrive from Werder Bremen.)

Unsure why a French source (albeit a pretty reputable one) is breaking an Anglo-German transfer. Sceptical for the moment.

Oops - sorry, didn't see that you'd already commented on it. No news at all from German sources so far on the move, and as I know people in Bremen, this seems curious.

Interesting idea. But I'd sooner take a gamble on one or the other and get Young. Silva is the one I'd get.

I have gone that way, I am a little worried with not having Dzeko, but I think there will be some rotation there with Balotelli and tevez moaning on the bench.

It's an alternative to N/S + Dzeko freeing up a front spot..

I like it because I cannot leave out RVP with hes fixtures. No matter the form, he always scores.

if Man City have a low scoring game (which will happen), or tough fixtures, regarding assists youll have used 19mill on an assist or two spread over 2 players, 2+2+3, not including rotation, or the fact that alot of other players will get assists and set piece goals. Better spread out and get a City attacker or defender or a midfielder from another team.

That isn't correct. You buy players who will do well in teams that will do well. If you had 3 city attackers from Gw1 to now, you would be laughing. It is just as likely that another team will do poorly as it is that city will do poorly in a given gameweek (the only variable you can control is the fixtures). Even then, they score 5 away at Spurs, so the fixtures don't give you much control. All you can do is spend the money where the points appear to be coming from, and right now you'd be foolish not to buy 3 city players over 2 city and a chelsea, for instance. 'Spreading the risk' does make sense on the face of it, but it is nonsensical and given the look of things and city's next fixture, it's probably less risky to have 3 city attackers than it is to spread your money.
