Set-Piece Takers Updated

One of the benefits of the international break is that it allows us to pause and take stock and perhaps refresh some neglected areas of the site.

We’ve been able to update our set-piece takers based on the evidence of the season so far and, of course, last season’s records – you can now view the updated table – listing the penalty, direct free-kick and corner and indirect free-kick takers for every side – right here.

Mikel Arteta’s shift to Arsene Wenger’s squad has undoubtedly had the biggest impact on the current set-piece landscape. Having relieved Leighton Baines of free-kick and spot-kick duties for Everton at Blackburn in Gameweek three, his deadline day transfer to the Emirates has put Baines back in control, proving a major boost to the left-back’s appeal for the remainder of the season. We’re yet to see what kind of impression Arteta can make at Arsenal but, there’s little doubt he arrives with the reputation of one of the league’s primary set-piece experts and Wenger could well look to relieve Robin Van Persie of some of his responsibilities in this area.

Revisting that Blackburn vs Everton clash in the previous Gameweek – it’s worth noting that Junior Hoilett took on spot-kick duties with both David Dunn and Morten Gamst-Pedersen on the pitch. Jason Roberts was available, but Hoilett got the nod over him. Roberts was then off the pitch when Mauro Formica hit the post with his effort. This leaves the Blackburn Rovers spot-kick situation in flux, but we’ve given Hoilett promotion above Roberts in the pecking order, despite Saturday’s miss. New arrival Yakubu could yet have a say in this however.

Indeed, we’re still waiting on the impact of a host of new signings on the set-piece set-up. We imagine that both Samir Nasri and Juan Mata will both have a say for City and Chelsea respectively. Similarly, we’re yet to see how Steven Gerrard’s return, with the Spurs game in a fortnight the target, will influence the situation at Liverpool. Right now Charlie Adam is hogging set-plays but, we imagine that could change on Gerrard’s return to the fold.

Having established a new starting point for the season, we will work to keep this table updated and refreshed on a regular basis as the Gameweeks roll by.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yep, Stracqualursi added. Doubt he'll get them over Baines - that would really be a blow.

      Hello people!

Between Aston Villa’s Hutton and Warnock, who do you think has more attacking threat?

It is good business but were they ever going to go past 35M? No, If he is an Arsenal player they say he is worth 30M, at Barca though he is worth twice that!

Because they spent the entire summer telling Arsenal how he was only worth £30 million, and got everyone complaining about how Arsenal were holding Cesc against his will.

As far as I was concerned they were driving a hard bargain. I never thought Arsenal were holding Cesc just that neither side could agree to a price. He's probably just spouting off a bit given how well Fabs has adjusted to the team.

Yep, the City one is tricky. Tevez is the joker in the pack here - if he's on the pitch, he'll take them I imagine. Dzeko is another factor but, unless Mancini is pushing him for the golden boot, I imagine he'll be down the pecking order. Until the situation arises, we can only go on what's happened previously and speculate on the rest.

Not sure on your coverage elsewhere but Dzeko, 6 mill mid and Bos looks strongest. If Dzeko keeps scoring, his price will go on rising as will Bosingwa.

For 6 million in midfield - O'Hara could be worth a poke with his current crop of games to come.

RVP will come good over the next few weeks and, if you're lacking captain options, then there's no doubt he makes sense but you'd be weakening your squad elsewhere.

There is a better than 50/50 chance that Arteta will be holding midfield v Swansea. Song/Frimpers/Wilshere/Diaby all out. Doubt Coquelin will be given chance - that leaves Arteta and Ramsey. Arteta played that role on occasion for Everton and reckon he will do so on Saturday. He is good value when things change.

What are people's thoughts on Anderson? Has started every game for United so far and is less likely to be dropped than Cleverley I think. He's looked very good so far and sure he may be a slight rotation risk, but at 6.1 I'd rather have a rotation risk in a rampant United attack than a guaranteed starter for a bottom half team.

Think over the season he'll get more points than the likes of Brunt. Anyone else getting him in?

I've got Young, Nasri, Jarvis, Anderson, Adam.

I might want to keep young though so i could lose money if i get rid of him. Hoping Jarvis rises tonight so i make .1 but it's pointless if Petrov rises aswell.

    Am I missing something?

I keep reading advice from people about getting some kind of Spurs coverage (Bale / Ade etc)

Their fixtures aren't the greatest. (wol LIV wig ARS new)

Plus VDV is out which will hinder them, plus they've not been playing too well recently.

    So what am I missing?

I can't understand the attraction of Baines to be honest. Between now and GW11, only WIG at home stands out as a fixture in which you'd expect good returns from him. That aside, Everton's fixtures are dreadful.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm only keeping him for the next two weeks - AVL WIG. After that he'll be downgraded to Kompany/Santos/Enrique. Need someone to captain next week (most of the big teams have horrible fixtures) so figure he's the best choice.

Well, I think Baines will play every game and if you played him every game I think he'll be worth his price... but... his price means you forfeit other players who can get you more points depending on your selection.

As I have Kompany and Bosingwa, it ruled out Baines as I'd have to play the 3 of them every game and make the other 2 worthless.

So, rises tonight - looks like Dzeko and Jarvis should, and Petrov, Bos and de Laet possibles.

With Song and Wilshere missing from the next game, do people think Benayoun will start? I see Gervinho, VP, and Walcott as the front three, and Arteta, Frimpong (to sit deep in the absence of Song and Wilshere), and Benayoun as the middle three. The challengers to Benayoun are Ramsey and Arshavin but they are both in bad form domestically. I am tempted by Benayoun at 6.9m

      Ramsey will play, imo.

      Ramsey will start if fit.

Gervinho is still suspended, so Benayoun could start ahead of Arshavin, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Do we think Jarvis or Petrov might squeeze out another rise before saturday? (after tonights)

Jarvis' would be his third of the week, so I'd say that is never going to happen. Petrov just might, although I wouldn't count on it.

yeah i had Jarvis for his first rise then accidentally took him out :@ so cost myself 0.1 there, can get rid of Young now and bank his 0.1 profit as im not keeping him. need one or two of r taylor, ward, nasri, (jarvis/petrov) to afford my optimal team.

          Such a rookie error. 😉

I need all five of Taylor, Ward, Nasri, Silva and Klasnic for me to get my optimal team!
