Key Battles- Gameweek Fifteen

Our Friday regular looks at Juan Mata’s prospects at the Bridge on Monday evening as Man City make their way to Chelsea. Theo Walcott and Leighton Baines’ match-up looks a tantalising clash at the Emirate, while a red-hot Gareth Bale will fancy his chances at the Britannia on Sunday afternoon.

Juan Mata vs Micah Richards/ Pablo Zabaleta
The Spaniard’s 3 goals and 7 assists in just twelve appearances highlight his importance to Chelsea going forward. The creative hub of the Blues attacks, Mata is the man most likely to make things happen as Andre Villas-Boas aims to send City to their first league defeat of season. With the visitors conceding in each of their last seven, Mata will have plenty chances to infiltrate their back-four with his pinpoint passing and provide for the likes of Didier Drogba and Daniel Sturridge in Monday night’s live showdown.

Richards’ rampaging runs from deep have been an integral part of City’s attacking ploys this season. So far, he’s picked up 6 assists, with his ability to bomb forward and join in attacks proving dividend. Fabio Capello has turned his back on Richards, with his defensive merits a concern and it’s noticeable that Roberto Mancini has also played him just once in Europe- a 2-0 defeat at Bayern Munich. Richards was, admittedly, a doubt for the Bayern return on Wednesday with a slight calf strain but and Roberto Mancini has revealed today there may be a question mark against him for the Stamford Bridge clash. If he’s absent, Pablo Zabaleta should come in as a replacement, though the Argentine is not fancied by Mancini on the domestic stage, having failed to pick up any minutes since the win at Blackburn in gameweek seven. Whether either of the pair has the ability to nullify Mata’s threat is another thing entirely.

Theo Walcott vs Leighton Baines
The Gunners winger has stepped up in his consistency of late, without providing spectacular Fantasy returns. As the Arsenal new boys click into place and another new Arsene Wenger team evolves, Walcott has come to the fore in their recent unbeaten run, with his understanding with Robin Van Persie particularly catching the eye. Having scored or assisted in each of his last five league games, Walcott’s got the form and, having been rested for the Champions League trip to Olympiacos, will be fully fit and ready to torment Everton at the Emirates this Saturday.

While the Toffees wide men flatter to deceive and David Moyes bemoans a lack of creativity, Baines has been his usual consistent self. Despite a single assist all season, the left-back has set up more goalscoring opportunities per game that last term, with poor finishing from the Everton front men letting him down. His delivery from the flank is arguably more crucial than ever for Moyes’ side but Baines has a quandary, though- the further forward he forages, the more space he leaves for Walcott to utilise behind him.

Gareth Bale vs Andy Wilkinson
Bale has been untouchable over the last five gameweeks as a Fantasy asset, returning double figures on four of those occasions for a total of 56 points. While Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafael Van der Vaart have hogged the headlines on occasion, the Welshman has produced the goods on a more regular basis than either of the pair in recent times- a sure sign of his maturity and flourishing form within Harry Redknapp’s side as the season unfolds. Stoke’s physical game may pose problems for Spurs at the Britannia but Bale’s speed and ability against the more agricultural Potters back line may prove their undoing. Harry Redknapp revealed today he is a slight doubt due to a knock, but with the game not until Sunday, Bale will be optimistic of recovering in time.

Wilkinson was benched last week, though he did come on as a second half sub for Jonathan Woodgate in the win at Everton. This time round, though, he is likely to be handed the unwanted task of attempting to shackle Bale at the Britannia and can expect a torrid time. The 1-0 Goodison win was only the second clean sheet in ten matches for the Potters and faced with one of the most potent and in-form attacks in the Premier League, another one on Sunday perhaps seems unlikely. His only hope is Redknapp’s recent tendency to switch Bale and Aaron Lennon on the flanks, with Marc Wilson bracing himself for a head to head with the Welshman if he changes over to the right.

        Another from mcnulty

Robin van Persie has now scored or assisted 40 Premier League goals in 2011. This is more than Bolton, Stoke and Wigan have scored in total. This is also 14 more than any other player in the league

    From previous post

    Vorm

    Raylor Jones McAuley

    Brunt VdV Bale Silva

    Ba RvP Yakubu

    Subs: Westwood BAE Brown Tiote

Shoudl I play BAE over Raylor and rely on Raylor if Bale doesn’t make it or rely on BAE if no Bale. I just wonder if BAE becomes more of a threat without Bale in front of him.

Was Ashley Young that bad in midweek that he could be dropped tomorrow? Getting twitchy about him. Swapping for Nani feels safest bet. apparently he was the only shining light for united?

Allegedly he picked up a knock but he wasn't great, Nani started slowly (I actually slated him on here) then grew into the game and with the exception of his finishing was impressive, especially when he was sandwiched between 2 Basle players and just flicked the ball up and jumped between them, truly brilliant, United are just scared to shoot.

Shining light for the first half anyways, Rooney was ever so pissed when Nani became wasteful in the second half...out of frustration no doubt. I'm siding with Rooney, as I thought he tried very hard to do something in that haggard match along with Nani, but yes...I would swap for Nani. Personally.

Really Nani became selfish? After that Rooney miss in the first half when Nani put it on a plate for him, who can blame him, he just figured he's better off doing it himself.

Haha, cheers JK I can see where you're coming from...that was a terrible Rooney miss. But that doesn't mean Nani had to go and try crazy things too...an eye for an eye makes United blind and miss the target and lose. I thought Rooney was the better player that game, but it was close. But yeah, Nani and Rooney definitely were the only shining things for United that day...

I'm sorry but Rooney was frankly awful on Weds. Only players who looked capable of making something happen were Nani and Giggs. But yeah decision making can be a problem with Nani. Then again shooting can be a problem with United generally.

Was Planning on VDV > Nani but now considering Bale > Nani, already have Adebayor.

Only FFS has Smalling starting, others have Jones at RB.

Fergie obviously sees Jones as more of a midfielder than a defender for some reason. He's not good enough though. And Smalling was just awful against Basel. Manure dont have a lot of options due to injuries so I'm pretty sure Smalling will start, very sure Jones will. But if Jones goes to RB and Smalling misses out to Evans at CB, who'd play CM?

People captaining Rooney are making this game more difficult than it necessarily is. There better be no moaning tomorrow night when he inevitably disappoints. Even the Nani love I can understand.

However, good luck and if it pays off then I shall be the first with my congratulations.

I fancy Rooney to score but would not captain him over RVP.

After Weds if I was Big Mick I'd drop Wayne Hennessey stick a barn door in goal and see if Rooney (or any other United player for that matter) can hit it.

But they wouldnt be able to, so would just score loads? The logic doesnt work......

no being unable to hit a barn door means you can't score

time to lose Kompany? Had him all season, but ManC got some tricky fixtures coming up.
Got a free trade this week in any event. Best replacement for 6.2m and under?
    Smalling
    Enrique

Current defence; KOMPANY, BaE, Wilkinson, McAuley, N.Taylor

Kompany to Smalling is pretty solid but I'd probably go for Enrique (or agger if you're that way inclined).

Guys you think smalling is a good buy. I know he had a shocker at basel but even without vidic I still think there are plenty of CSs over the christmas period.

Evans is 0.8M cheaper and despite the fact that we think he's not as good as Smalling, we don't make the decisions. Sir Alex does. And he placed faith in Evans the first 2-3 months of the season, so I would assume Evans will play 2 of 3 or 3 of 4 league games just like Smalling will. The point is moot if Rio goes down injured or gets rested, which is bound to happen as well. At 4.4M, I think Evans is less risky as if he's benched you don't really mind because what was your alternative? Wes Brown or Danny Simpson?

I would also add my opinion is born out of already owning P. Jones so don't want to spend another 5.2M in MUFC back four, though happy to spend another 4.4M as bought Jones at 6M or 6.1M a month ago...

thats a very fair point. If he doesnt play then Ive got 5.2m on my bench. I actually thought SAF really likes smalling more than evans and Jones. But 4.4m is a dam good price for Utd defender.

I think Smalling is a good buy. He played okay midweek if you take away that shocking error. He is generally very consistent.

Bench Shawcross and Kompany I would say, City will concede, attacking points in BAE and Jones (as well as clean sheet potential with Jones), Enrique could get clean sheet too.

Play Ramsey or spend 4 points to get Mata or Nani? I have no United attacking cover and Sturridge up front.

    Hello again.

Today, I was going to VDV to Nani and Wilkinson for Smalling, giving me a heavy heavy monster defence of:
    Enrique, Smalling, BAE, Brown, Simpson.

However, I figure that VDV is now likely to start, and I've just noticed that I can go Drenthe > Nani with 0.1 m to spare (which gives me enough to go BAE > Smalling now (for a hit) or next week if I so choose).

So Drenthe > Nani? This has to be a no-brainer? Right?

I would prefer Moses to Barnett. Looks ok, although captaining Lamps is kinda crazy. Don't know if he'll get 90 minutes.
