The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Robin Red Faced

“He is an exceptional player and when you feed him in the box, he’s deadly.”

You see, we kind of knew all that. We realised that, against Blackburn, particularly a Blackburn reduced to ten men after half an hour, Van Persie had the tools to destroy them and deliver massive returns. The problem Mr Wenger, is that on Friday afternoon you uttered this…

“I will rotate a little bit because many players have given a lot…[With Van Persie] the temptation is there.”

That was news to us Fantasy managers. That put the frighteners on and, despite our attempt this morning to deconstruct that statement and put up arguments against the idea of resting Van Persie, some took action. Indeed, two of the top four ranked Fantasy Premier League managers opted to give the armband to Sergio Aguero – perhaps oblivious to Wenger’s threats, but more likely as a result of them.

The very idea of us, a site dedicated to passing information to Fantasy Football managers, ignoring the quotes from Wenger was never a viable option. We turned a blind eye to Friday’s Sun report, but when Wenger speaks, we had to report it. So, to counter that, in this morning’s Preamble, we stressed the need to keep faith with Van Persie and hope that Wenger resisted the gamble. Hopefully, that helped some in their decision to sit tight.

Is there a lesson to be learned? Certainly the fact that Van Persie remained on the pitch to provide an assist to Thierry Henry with the score at 6-1, indicates that the idea of resting Van Persie didn’t cross Wenger’s mind once the goals started flowing. Had Van Persie been tiring, had he been desperate for a break – why was he left on the pitch when the match was dead and buried?

Only Wenger has the answers, and it seems we’ll never quite work out his thinking when it comes to Van Persie. With the Champions League programme looming, we can surely expect more uncertainly, perhaps some smokescreens.

However, today surely confirmed that we can ill afford to take risks with Van Persie and the armband. There is no better Fantasy damage dealer and if there’s a chance that he will be on the pitch, particularly against abject opposition, we have to back him. That policy may cost us – there may well be occasions when Van Persie will be left fidgeting on the bench whilst sporting our armbands. The question is, will those who suffer that fate feel any worse that those who missed out on today’s incredible haul? Right now, in this Knee Jerk, it seems unlikely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Having not seen any of the Sunderland game do we reckon there could be a cheeky bonus point for Sessegnon? Would have thought with clearances from throw-ins/crosses from Stoke's style of play defensive players are more likely to be rewarded by EA's magic formula but you never know.

I said it last week too after the start of the 'campaign' fell flat. Hell last week should have told you enough, he plays for a hoofing team, that don't really maintain possession. The red card is just the proverbial kick in your collective balls. We all have our own nad punts to take.

I was the dumb assh*le to bring in Verm for a 4 pt hit when I could have just played BAE tomorrow.

I'm happy with my decision of Aguero as captain, RVP's score is freak and wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the red card. Still a decent scoring week. I feel happy now that N Taylor got an assist and he comes on for the absent Kompany. I just need to sort out my keepers and my team will be all set.

Aguero or RVP it was a hard decision this week. I chopped and changed a lot, in the end decided that Wenger couldn't afford to bench him.

I agree that hit score was a bit freak but a hat trick against Blackburn isn't that out of the ordinary, 2 assists were a bonus.

I can't blame people for captaining Aguero though, and on a usual week, you've done well with a goal and an assist.

ok folks what should I do with the Gerbil? Should I make the transfer now before Bobby goes up or hold off until Tuesday? The rise would not put him out of reach, and wouldn’t this game week as he won’t go past 7.

Graham, Papiss, Rodallega, Gabby and Keane also on the watchlist (Demba is sadly out of reach)

    Advice appreciated.

Thinking the same thing. I like Dempsey but his value is very high for a Fulham player plus with Zamora gone I think we might see a difference in his link up play which was beneficial for Clint. Progrebnyak could just be another random Russian (Bily, Arshavin & Pav) spring to mind. AOX is great value, playing for a big club and he will run riot especially at the Emirates.

Am monitoring Clint as well. If he goes it will be Ox/Siggi. Am tempted to leave Cisse on bench for 1 game to give myself 2 frees GW26 to look at Clint. If he's poor vs Stoke I may downgrade and use the case to do Cisse - Ba.

I'd try and get out of stoke players tbh, they have those two nice home fixtures but the three afterwards aren't appealing. You need to sort that Shotton transfer out though, so shawcross is better than nothing but I'm feeling confident in sunderland defence atm, o'shea okay at 5m

61 with five players to play: Krul, Simpson, J. Evans, Bale and Ba to play.

Evans comes off my bench for Kompany, who I really had thought would play.

One I'd preferred stayed on the bench today was Shotton, who was subbed on in the 85th minute... just to get me one lousy point.

Just saw the Cisse red card--- if only he hadn't put his hand to Johnson's throat, R. Johnson committed a "typical" yellow card foul and Cisse reacted. Cisse is so experienced -- probably thought he was trying to establish himself in the EPL.

Reminds me of Joe Cole's red card for a sliding bad tackle last year on his first game.

i think Hart would be a decent pick. Not really a decent way into their defence without kompany and he's expensive.

Those with Morison should get rid, even before today after seeing Holt play against Chelsea it was clear that Morison wouldn't do as well now Holt is playing and playing well

I think Taarabt could be a good punt if you are looking for a differential. With Cisse banned for 3 matches he may well play up front with Zamora and was really excellent today. I'd get him myself but am pretty happy with midfield and wouldn't know who to sell
