Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

As Florent Malouda replaced Juan Mata on the 76th minute mark during Chelsea’s Gameweek 25 defeat at Everton, the boos and cries from fans of the away side of “you don’t know what you’re doing” echoed ominously around Andre Villas-Boas’ ears.

The moment poignantly sums up just how frustrating this campaign has been for the London outfit, in which even a Champions League spot is in doubt. It also illustrates just how highly Chelsea fans rate Mata; for many, he has been the team’s best player this season, and in Fantasy terms he is certainly the most reliable source of points, registering 108, the highest of any Blues player.

As fixtures begin to look more enticing over the coming weeks and, with the return of Didier Drogba from the African Cup of Nations to bolster the attack, Mata once again finds himself in our thoughts. Daniel Sturridge offers another, cheaper option of gaining coverage for Chelsea favourable run of fixtures, but he would use up a precious spot in our attacks – places likely to be currently reserved for the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba and Sergio Aguero. That leaves Mata as the weapon of choice for those backing Andre Villas-Boas to drag his side out of their recent slump.

Currently ranked as the sixth top midfielder in terms of total points, Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair, but the Spanish midfielder does come with a major health warning.

A closer look at his season shows that, while at home he is capable of impressive Fantasy returns, Mata is inexplicably transformed into an expensive liability when Chelsea hit the road. All three of his double point hauls, including a return of 17 against Wolves in Gameweek 13 and a score of 13 against Manchester United in Gameweek 24, have come at home.

Of his 108 points, 73 have been earned at Stamford Bridge, ranking him alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and Stoke’s Jon Walters as popular players who simply do not travel well. The highest away tally Mata has achieved was six points at Newcastle in Gameweek 14 – only the second time he managed a score above three on the road.

Those Fantasy managers looking to invest in Mata perhaps need to be brave enough to bench him away as a payoff for his considerable home potential. The rewards of such a bold strategy could prove handsome, given that over the next seven weeks Chelsea have four home games (BOL, wba, STO, mcy, TOT, avl, WIG).

Of course to succeed with such a ploy, Fantasy managers would need an able replacement for Chelsea’s away games. For those who already own Clint Dempsey, it is worth noting that Fulham play at home when Chelsea play away all the way to the end of the season. A somewhat luxurious rotation midfield pairing, no doubt, but, given that Dempsey is another who tends to struggle on the road, it’s one that could ultimately prove dividend for those with budget to spare.

Talk on the last post about the goal potential of Skrtel (or however you spell it). Just a thought in general about "goal scoring defenders". Given that even "prolific" defenders only score a few goals in the course of a season, the relatively high price of this type of defender (compared to other defenders with the same team) is only worth if you are planning to keep a defender for a long time (at least 10-15 GW's). Otherwise, the likelihood is that you'll miss their goals anyway. Given that people on here seem to change their teams round regularly depending on fixtures and form this is unlikely to be the case.

Yep, there is certainly an element of randomness in getting goals from centre backs. Still a good factor to research if you, like the poster of the question, have decided that a team will keep some clean sheets and needs to decide which one to pick.

Agreed. I'd rather spend the extra dosh on more reliable clean sheets from the likes of Kompany. I've very little interest in attacking returns from defenders. The form guide changes like the wind.

"Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair"

Bit selective? How many has Bale scored? And how many has Silva assisted? Why not compare him against those benchmarks in deciding whether his price is fair?

you really dont want dempsey starting... benched twice 🙂 i'd play demps @ qpr, i know you have taiwo but thats surely for attacking reasons & not cs? maybe demps in for siggy?

yeah i dont exactly feel comfortable benching dempsey but think everyone else in my mid will outscore him this week, time to be bold maybe 😉

Great article, but I've already owned Mata for too long this season. Shan't be doing so again!

    FFS Europa League Preview

    GROUP F

PSG (King Eric – Rank: 5,805)
Second highest ranked manager for the whole competition, King Eric heads the list in this group of second seeds from each pot. King Eric has been inside the top 10k for the past 10 gameweeks and to his credit most of that was spent inside the top 5k until a minor setback in GW25. His past finishes are very respectable with a notably brilliant 461st place in the 2008/09 season. Whether or not he will be feared, in what is sure to be a strong and tightly contested group, we shall see.
Key differential = Edin Dzeko features in a lot of teams in the competition but unlike other managers King Eric doesn’t have the cash in the bank to do a possible upgrade. He may then stick with the Big Bosnian and if so it could prove to be a savvy move or a costly risk.

    Athletic (Microcuts – Rank: 38,217)
Our second contender in this group finished 16,313th last season. Considering the favourite of the group King Eric finished in 35,154th place last year this should give an indication as to the strong competition in Group F. It’s clear Microcuts does not fear a 4 point to get the team he wants, having taken a 4 pointer frequently throughout this season including 5 in the last 6 gameweeks.
Key differential = Jonathan Walters seems to be his unique edge and he’ll be hoping Pulis keeps him up front in their coming home games where he can hopefully win and dispatch more penalties. A shout out for Paddy Kenny also.

Salzburg (Drinking Red Bull – Rank: 167,832)
After a very mediocre start to this season Drinking Red Bull found himself marooned at 1.2million in the world by GW7. Then something kicked in and sh1t got real. A staggering run of 11 consecutive green arrows between GW8 and GW18 followed and he is now 1 million places better off then those dark days of GW7. That beautiful run is warning signal to the other member of the group that DRB is ready for a fight in this competition.
Key differential = Drinking Red Bull may well give you wings but he will be hoping Benoit Assou Ekotto is making use of them and returning more double figure hauls for his team.

Slovan Bratislava (SSK Ginkvan – Rank: 410,491)
First before I get into this, no one will hate these Group Review posts more than Ginkapo and his monkey themed gravs. A straight to the point type of guy who always likes to hate on my long winded and meandering posts, this may not even be worth my while. Anyhow, looking at his history it’s clear he doesn’t let a bad rank or past finishes get in the way of posting his opinion 😛 You know I love you really. If anything he looks like the type of manager who likes to take risks and have fun while playing the game and in H2H combat this is one of the most dangerous foes you can face.
Key differential = The uncontainable Danny Graham may be breaking a few hearts in this group, SSK Ginkvan will certainly be hoping so.

Shame this is 'lost' at the bottom, but I did just manage to catch it. Another brilliant write up. I've enjoyed them thus far.
