Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

As Florent Malouda replaced Juan Mata on the 76th minute mark during Chelsea’s Gameweek 25 defeat at Everton, the boos and cries from fans of the away side of “you don’t know what you’re doing” echoed ominously around Andre Villas-Boas’ ears.

The moment poignantly sums up just how frustrating this campaign has been for the London outfit, in which even a Champions League spot is in doubt. It also illustrates just how highly Chelsea fans rate Mata; for many, he has been the team’s best player this season, and in Fantasy terms he is certainly the most reliable source of points, registering 108, the highest of any Blues player.

As fixtures begin to look more enticing over the coming weeks and, with the return of Didier Drogba from the African Cup of Nations to bolster the attack, Mata once again finds himself in our thoughts. Daniel Sturridge offers another, cheaper option of gaining coverage for Chelsea favourable run of fixtures, but he would use up a precious spot in our attacks – places likely to be currently reserved for the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba and Sergio Aguero. That leaves Mata as the weapon of choice for those backing Andre Villas-Boas to drag his side out of their recent slump.

Currently ranked as the sixth top midfielder in terms of total points, Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair, but the Spanish midfielder does come with a major health warning.

A closer look at his season shows that, while at home he is capable of impressive Fantasy returns, Mata is inexplicably transformed into an expensive liability when Chelsea hit the road. All three of his double point hauls, including a return of 17 against Wolves in Gameweek 13 and a score of 13 against Manchester United in Gameweek 24, have come at home.

Of his 108 points, 73 have been earned at Stamford Bridge, ranking him alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and Stoke’s Jon Walters as popular players who simply do not travel well. The highest away tally Mata has achieved was six points at Newcastle in Gameweek 14 – only the second time he managed a score above three on the road.

Those Fantasy managers looking to invest in Mata perhaps need to be brave enough to bench him away as a payoff for his considerable home potential. The rewards of such a bold strategy could prove handsome, given that over the next seven weeks Chelsea have four home games (BOL, wba, STO, mcy, TOT, avl, WIG).

Of course to succeed with such a ploy, Fantasy managers would need an able replacement for Chelsea’s away games. For those who already own Clint Dempsey, it is worth noting that Fulham play at home when Chelsea play away all the way to the end of the season. A somewhat luxurious rotation midfield pairing, no doubt, but, given that Dempsey is another who tends to struggle on the road, it’s one that could ultimately prove dividend for those with budget to spare.

anyone think valencia to cleverly is a decent straight swap for ManU cover?
Probably bench him till gw28 anyway
could then bring in aguero or rooney for zamora

    A'noon all,

I'll be getting Roon in for Kun in GW 28 but tricky transfers to make up the £ difference. Which is better?

    A

    --Mignolet--Ruddy--
    --J Evans--BAE--Micah--Kelly--Simpson--
    --Silva--Bale--Dempsey--Valencia (if fit)--(Ferg)--
    --RVP--Roon--Baa--

    B

    --Mig--Sorenson--
    --J Evans--King (or other 4.8m def) --Micah--Kelly--Simpson--
    --Silva--Bale--Dempsey--Valencia (if fit)--McLean
    --RVP--Roon--Baa--

If Rooney hits one of his purple patches he is FF gold but is a tough call to downgrade one of BAE or McLean. Decisions, decisions...

I'm thinking of doing valencia > surman. Norwich have some nice home games coming up and that would allow me to do a few upgrades such as sorenson > krul, aguero > rooney and couple of my defenders. It's no fun having a stellar midfield anyway as you're always pulling your hair out who to bench!

Don't let AP bully you into that Lewis. I picked Guti too just above you. Hilarious player and one of the best passers of the ball EVER. He just couldn't be arsed to to it very often.

Oh it wouldn't be bullying, I genuinely forgot to pick Bergkamp, who i absolutely adored growing up. And still fawn over on youtube.

Guti was a genius though, and so loved by the RM public. That goal is just insane when you think about it, could've gone so wrong. They certainly don't make them like him anymore.

Right, I've had it with Silva so considering moving him on for Yaya. Valencia is also going for possibly Siggy or Beausejour, allowing me to upgrade Yak to Roo for just a 4 point hit. Team would be:

    Krul
    Taiwo, Jevans, Richards (Caulker, Kelly)
    Yaya, Bale, Dempsey, Mclean (Siggy/Beause)
    RVP, Aguero, Roo

What do you think? Aguero will go after these next 2 GWs but really want Roo now!

I'm not no. I said there was a good chance Mancini was going to bring in Zab last week for Richards.

He rested Silva against Villa earlier in the season and against Newcastle, so the precedence is there.

    Hi guys,

I want to do the below transfers:

    for GW 27:

    McClean in for Sessegnon

    for GW 28:

    Rooney in for Aguero

    for GW 29:

    Skrtel in for Shotton

I can afford this at the moment, with 0.1 spare - what are the chances i will have enough to do all these transfers? Looks like Rooney is close to rising, hoping McClean/Sess will cancel each other out, and hoping there shouldnt be any movement in Shotton and Skrtel?

    cheers,

I don't think you're wrong from GW31, I just need to make up a deficit of 71 points in my mini league, it's a differential that may or may not work out. I won't be gaining much if we all have the same players!

Off topic but I know a few of you are pretty good on the tecchy side of things, looking for a bit of advice.
Is it generally better value to get your macbook straight from the Apple online store? Seems logical that it would be and is the 2.5GHz Quad Core Intel i7 worth paying an extra 254 euro over the 2.4GHz?
Going to have 8GB of RAM if thats any help.

It really depends on what you are planning to use it primarily for. It's generally better to get it direct from the Apple store rather than a 3rd party store. If you can, try and get someone who is a student to order it for you (unless you're one your self), you can get a pretty decent discount.

I suppose the trickiest thing I'll be doing on it is video and photo editing. Maybe a bit of sound editing too other than that it will be pretty general use, good call about the student discounts, but I'll be getting it for my company so I can knock the VAT off (nice 23% saving there)

My father in law gets new but reconditioned macs....they sell them through the apple store. Basically they had a fault that's been rectified and now as good as new. Could be a good way to save money.

I've got a macbook pro 2.4ghz intel core i5 with 8gb and it works great. Can't speak for the 2.5 though.

lots of bargains if you go down the reconditioned/refurbished route.

Do not go for a 8 GB RAM for a laptop. 6 will more than suffice.

And no, it's not worth it.

+1 8GB is pointless unless you have a specific reason for it... I develop software on mine and run a database and a web server and my programming environment and 4GB is enough for me...

I always here conflicting things regarding the RAM, some say once its 4+ its fine, others say get as much as you can afford. I dunno, it seems safer (if slightly more expensive) to get more now rather than potentially have to upgrade later.

All depends on whether you're going to use it. but yes, having more allows you to run more programs without worrying... less likely to get the beach ball of death...

Sounds like the way to go then, I'm a fecker for having a shit load of programmes, tabs etc running at once. Thanks.

Depends whether the software you are using is running in 64bit mode. If it is, it can access loads of RAM. If not, I think the ceiling is 2GB.
So in 32bit mode the only advantage you'll have running a lot of RAM is if you run a lot of small programs at the same time.

depending on how Aguero, Suarez and Ba (maybe Saha) do over the next couple, I might just get Aguero, RVP and Rooney.
