Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

As Florent Malouda replaced Juan Mata on the 76th minute mark during Chelsea’s Gameweek 25 defeat at Everton, the boos and cries from fans of the away side of “you don’t know what you’re doing” echoed ominously around Andre Villas-Boas’ ears.

The moment poignantly sums up just how frustrating this campaign has been for the London outfit, in which even a Champions League spot is in doubt. It also illustrates just how highly Chelsea fans rate Mata; for many, he has been the team’s best player this season, and in Fantasy terms he is certainly the most reliable source of points, registering 108, the highest of any Blues player.

As fixtures begin to look more enticing over the coming weeks and, with the return of Didier Drogba from the African Cup of Nations to bolster the attack, Mata once again finds himself in our thoughts. Daniel Sturridge offers another, cheaper option of gaining coverage for Chelsea favourable run of fixtures, but he would use up a precious spot in our attacks – places likely to be currently reserved for the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba and Sergio Aguero. That leaves Mata as the weapon of choice for those backing Andre Villas-Boas to drag his side out of their recent slump.

Currently ranked as the sixth top midfielder in terms of total points, Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair, but the Spanish midfielder does come with a major health warning.

A closer look at his season shows that, while at home he is capable of impressive Fantasy returns, Mata is inexplicably transformed into an expensive liability when Chelsea hit the road. All three of his double point hauls, including a return of 17 against Wolves in Gameweek 13 and a score of 13 against Manchester United in Gameweek 24, have come at home.

Of his 108 points, 73 have been earned at Stamford Bridge, ranking him alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and Stoke’s Jon Walters as popular players who simply do not travel well. The highest away tally Mata has achieved was six points at Newcastle in Gameweek 14 – only the second time he managed a score above three on the road.

Those Fantasy managers looking to invest in Mata perhaps need to be brave enough to bench him away as a payoff for his considerable home potential. The rewards of such a bold strategy could prove handsome, given that over the next seven weeks Chelsea have four home games (BOL, wba, STO, mcy, TOT, avl, WIG).

Of course to succeed with such a ploy, Fantasy managers would need an able replacement for Chelsea’s away games. For those who already own Clint Dempsey, it is worth noting that Fulham play at home when Chelsea play away all the way to the end of the season. A somewhat luxurious rotation midfield pairing, no doubt, but, given that Dempsey is another who tends to struggle on the road, it’s one that could ultimately prove dividend for those with budget to spare.

Who to switch Tony V for 8.2 or less? Already got 3 City and other forwards are:

    Silva Dempsey Bale McClean
    RVP Aguero Ba

Would save it but I've got 2 frees, so I might as well swap him to someone not injured even if I bench them this week.

    Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem and the exact same front 8. I just have no good idea, there's no one obvious in that price bracket unfortunately. Upgrade to Mata, double up to Sess. Both feel like poor swaps

Mata would be a good swap I reckon, unfortunately I have nothing in the bank. You're right there's not much there and Sess feels like a waste.

people are saying: sess, siggy, ox, cabaye. I am keeping him, but it would be pitty for you to waste transfer. Do some differential and bring him back when he is healthy.

Yeh, keeping him really seems like the best idea at the moment. Only providing he doesn't miss out more than month though, anymore would just be too long.

I don't like the the look of the ominous 'unkown' return date.

Considering Taraabt as a differential? Siggy and Ox don't have great fixtures and Cabaye is coming back from injury.

Could also upgrade Vorm/Sor to Krul with my other freebie?

I know it's a risk, but I'm hoping he's a different prospect from the early season.

It feels like a punt but not too wild given the other options available.

Hmmm, this article has me thinking.

Valencia and Huth to Santon and Mata could be doable.

    Anyone got any opinions?

    Leaves me with

    Krul, Lindegaard
Richards, J Evans, Santon, Taiwo, Kelly
    Silva, Bale, Mata, Dempsey, Sess
    RVP, Ba, Dzeko

I'm thinking that but not sure on options.

Only have two transfers and Huth and Valencia need to go really.

Could sit on Huth as he is back after this week, so I still have one of the games I originally got him for to go.

I could do Valencia and Dzeko to Siggy and Aguero. Although don't think I want Aguero long term, my long term plan on the Dzeko was probably to go with someone like the Yak.

    Now for the worst

    Gk - De Gea
    Def - Vermaelen
    Mid - Downing
    Fwd - Torres

Goal - Not premier league but that Brighton own goal yesterday was horrendous! The one where he chested it and then kneed it in.

    Signing - Downing
Manager - Unfortunately, it has to be Arsene.

I wonder if Valencia's injury was blown out of proportion a bit to keep Valencia from travelling for the friendly.

    FFS Europa League Preview

GROUP I (GROUP H has been postponed due to late personnel changes)

    Atletico Madrid (JKisthe1 – Rank: 19,478)
JK is fairly famous around these parts but not for being in Jamiroquai. He’s better known for his banter on the comments. As early as GW2 he was mixing it in the big leagues with a rank of 32,253rd. An interesting fact about young JK’s gameweek history is that he actually got a rare BLUE arrow in GW3 maintaining the exact same rank of 32,253rd from the week before. If that wasn’t freaky enough he almost got a second consecutive blue arrow in GW4 but ended up with a jumbled up 35,523rd place. Weird. Anyhow he hasn’t let that good start go to waste and has been valiantly persevering around the 20k mark ever since, which is a lot easier said than done.
Key differential = With 3.7m in the bank I’m expecting the gerbil to get upgraded and that is where JK may find his unique edge. Regardless, will the potential rise or fall of Swansea’s Siggy Stardust turn out to be very important in this group when the dust has settled.

    Udinese (Mull – Rank: 108,779)
Another manager who was straight into the top 100k by GW2 like his rival JK. By GW9 he was in the top 20k but somewhere around GW12 things started to go off for Mull. 10 red arrows in the following 14 gameweeks saw him lose his top 100k status but I’m sure it won’t be long before he makes his way back into that club. Pay little attention to last year’s rank, Mull has already tipped me off that he started late in the previous season and therefore this poor rank has little baring on his managerial qualities.
Key differential =He’ll be feeding the sheep as much as possible (at least that is what he says he’s doing when we hear those strange noises coming from the barn) because he’ll be expecting crucial points from the FPL phenomenon that is Demba Baaaaa.

    Rennes (Dudu – Rank: 229,501)
Call me immature if you want but I did have a little snigger at this username. Dudu (tsk tsk) is having an unspectacular season and with no previous finishes on record it’s hard to gauge what type of manager we’re dealing with here. With only 5 hits all season it’s not like he is even particularly cavalier in his transfer dealings, he’s just having a mediocre season. Can he do a ‘Greece’ in this competition though?
Key differential = Finally someone in this competition is a Wayne Rooney owner. Roonpig is sure to be a massive differential for Dudu (tsk tsk) in this group at least until everyone else gets him in GW28 😯

    Celtic (Rebeldog777 – Rank: 690,900)
A controversial Bobby Sands quote announced his arrival in the competition. He’s not here to make friends though, he’s out to win the whole thing. Hefty ambitions for the rank outsider in Group I. Looking at his credentials, I still can’t quite understand how someone who finished 6,744th last season could have been a shocking 1.9million in the world as late as GW11 this season. Possibly the two 12pt hits played a part? Since then however he has put together an impressive 12 green arrows in 13 gameweeks which has got him to the still admittedly poor rank he possesses today. Will his revenge be the laughter of his children or is he talking out of his hoop 😉 ?
Key differential = Continuing my thoroughly intentional theme of bestiality, rebeldog will be hoping to ride an Ox into the sunset. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that is.

Is a goal and an assist all that is needed to hit form nowadays?! Personally I think he's an average option at best but others clearly think otherwise. Yaya is a proven performer and a much better option imo especially at home compared to Swansea's away game.

    Hi guys,

I want to do the below transfers:

    for GW 27:

    McClean in for Sessegnon

    for GW 28:

    Rooney in for Aguero

    for GW 29:

    Skrtel in for Shotton

I can afford this at the moment, with 0.1 spare – what are the chances i will have enough to do all these transfers? Looks like Rooney is close to rising, hoping McClean/Sess will cancel each other out, and hoping there shouldnt be any movement in Shotton and Skrtel?

    cheers!

      Hey Jakey,

I just explained it to bookaholic a few hours back.

Sorry mate! It boiled down to our lurker intolerance policy. But we’ve been asking around here about you – and no one knew about you! We also searched the posts from the last week or so and didn’t see you at all. Also, we had been constantly posting on FFS requesting you to show up & speak to one of the organizers of the Europa – we didn’t get any replies.

Eventually, had to pull the trigger, since we had a few really really interested managers for this position. Next time, I shall make sure that we have clear qualifying 'rules' so as to avoid any disappointment of this order 🙂

However, hope you’d understand our premises & continue to support the spirit of the Cup. Sorry, once again!

ENR (on behalf of the others too)

ElNino floated the idea back around Monday/Tuesday of last week before the CL games, as a mini tournament for FFS posters, turned out there was quite a lot of interest, and so a Europa League was set up to cater for those who didn't get into the the first one, Parmtree and Udit volunteering to organise it.

Since then its got more and more heated, with group reviews and all.

It's just the result of two weeks without any PL football 😛
