Watchlist

The Watchlist – Juan Mata

As Florent Malouda replaced Juan Mata on the 76th minute mark during Chelsea’s Gameweek 25 defeat at Everton, the boos and cries from fans of the away side of “you don’t know what you’re doing” echoed ominously around Andre Villas-Boas’ ears.

The moment poignantly sums up just how frustrating this campaign has been for the London outfit, in which even a Champions League spot is in doubt. It also illustrates just how highly Chelsea fans rate Mata; for many, he has been the team’s best player this season, and in Fantasy terms he is certainly the most reliable source of points, registering 108, the highest of any Blues player.

As fixtures begin to look more enticing over the coming weeks and, with the return of Didier Drogba from the African Cup of Nations to bolster the attack, Mata once again finds himself in our thoughts. Daniel Sturridge offers another, cheaper option of gaining coverage for Chelsea favourable run of fixtures, but he would use up a precious spot in our attacks – places likely to be currently reserved for the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba and Sergio Aguero. That leaves Mata as the weapon of choice for those backing Andre Villas-Boas to drag his side out of their recent slump.

Currently ranked as the sixth top midfielder in terms of total points, Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair, but the Spanish midfielder does come with a major health warning.

A closer look at his season shows that, while at home he is capable of impressive Fantasy returns, Mata is inexplicably transformed into an expensive liability when Chelsea hit the road. All three of his double point hauls, including a return of 17 against Wolves in Gameweek 13 and a score of 13 against Manchester United in Gameweek 24, have come at home.

Of his 108 points, 73 have been earned at Stamford Bridge, ranking him alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and Stoke’s Jon Walters as popular players who simply do not travel well. The highest away tally Mata has achieved was six points at Newcastle in Gameweek 14 – only the second time he managed a score above three on the road.

Those Fantasy managers looking to invest in Mata perhaps need to be brave enough to bench him away as a payoff for his considerable home potential. The rewards of such a bold strategy could prove handsome, given that over the next seven weeks Chelsea have four home games (BOL, wba, STO, mcy, TOT, avl, WIG).

Of course to succeed with such a ploy, Fantasy managers would need an able replacement for Chelsea’s away games. For those who already own Clint Dempsey, it is worth noting that Fulham play at home when Chelsea play away all the way to the end of the season. A somewhat luxurious rotation midfield pairing, no doubt, but, given that Dempsey is another who tends to struggle on the road, it’s one that could ultimately prove dividend for those with budget to spare.

Does anyne think senderos and valencia ➡ Raylor and Yaya for a hit is a good idea. I would get valencia back in week 29/30 when he returned from injury.

    Current team is

    Krul
    Kelly, Evans, Richards
    Sess, Bale, Dempsey, McClean
    Rvp, Ba, Aguero

    Vorm, Valencia, Skrtel, Senderos

Forgive me for being a heretic but I wouldn't buy Silva.

That MF is the best there is. I would put Sig, Mata and Yaya all ahead of Silva.

    FFS Europa League Preview

    GROUP J

    Schalke (Optimus – Rank: 27,664)
It’s clear Optimus is primed to be the number 1 contender for group winner here. His FPL record is excellent, with a 61,203rd place finish two seasons ago and a 13,025th place finish last season he has demonstrated that he is quite skilful at this management malarkey. He’s made something of a comeback this season being as low as 1.2 million in GW7 before achieving 13 green arrows in 17 gameweeks which has firmly cemented his place in the top 50k. His team value of 109.2m with 3.2m in the bank is just frightening. Also his FPL kit looks like something Prince would wear on stage. Will Purple reign in this group?
Key differential = Optimus will be hoping BAE can transform 😎 his next 2 difficult fixtures into profitable ones. I’m also interested to know where that useful 3.2m will be spent.

Steaua București (DJERBIL – Rank: 150,391)
He should easily beat last year’s finish of 246,237th place this season but with 4 red arrows in the last 5 gameweeks causing him to drop over 50k places, with all due respect to Djerbil, his team is out of form and in need of a revival. With only two transfer hits all season he may be required to take more risks in order to improve that rank. Not that rank really matters in all of this, it is after all a H2H competition.
Key differential =Danny “Differential” Graham. The other 3 in the group have Ba so Graham may well need to outscore Demba in order for Djerbil to make headway in this group.

    M.Haifa (King Nil Miss – Rank: 255,137)
In a strange twist of fate King Nil Miss is now the rank outsider in this group. He has a little work to do yet if he is to beat last year’s ranking of 226,972nd but the 200k mark has proven to be something of an obstacle for him in the last couple of weeks. He will take heart though from the 13 green arrows he has achieved in the last 18 gameweeks which has propelled him around 1 million places higher in the rankings. He'll therefore be combining his aim of breaking into the top 200k and reaching the knockout rounds.
Key differential = King Nil Miss will be hoping that the formidable Vermelean can turn Arsenal’s fortunes around and perhaps he can be the one to kickstart their goalscoring habits again.

AEK Larnaca (Impressive Tackle – Rank: 44,582)
My entry into this competition is steeped in (fake) controversy. The original manager Reinaman would have been seen as the fodder in this group but upon his shocking and generous abdication on Friday night, I have stepped into the breach to guide Larnaca in their quest for glory. Outranking both Djerbil and King Nil Miss, my entry definitely upsets the equilibrium of this group, unlike the other groups there is now no-one in Group J outside of the top 300k. It appears my previous finish of 14th place last season is the highest placed finish of any of the Europa League managers but my opponents will look to my other two seasons where both times I finished outside of the top 100k, I like to call this my pre-FFS era. These group previews are kind of a thank you to El Nino Rules and Parmtree for giving me a chance in this tournament.
Key differential = It looks like I will be relying on the holy one Victor Moses to part the waves in this group. Uh oh.

    FFS Bore-opa League Preview

    GROUP Z

Notts County (Sporting Abeergut – Rank: 116,031)

In a strange twist of fate, he didn't enter the European Fantasy Football competitions because FPL take up enough time as it is. He is already well on the way to improving his best ever ranking of 81,355. At least he was. Unfortunately, the FFS site seems to give very little FPL advice at the moment as most people are gripped with the Europa League fever. When will it all end?

Key differential = Sporting Abeergut is a sarcastic ar*e who will be hoping that his charm and wit will pull him through in the end.

Alan Green had previously described Ex-Manchester City and Chinese defender Sun Jihai as wearing shirt "Number 17 -- that'll be the Chicken Chow Mein, then" during a live radio broadcast.

Alan Green joining the likes Terry and Suarez then 😉

    FFS Europa League Preview

    GROUP K

    Twente (Shipstontrev – Rank: 21,203)
He may be seeded 8th overall in the competition but he’s my top pick to go all the way. As the regulars will already know, his fantastic reputation precedes him. Amazingly in five previous seasons of FPL he has never finished outside of the top 20k, wowsers! A 523rd place finish and a 51st place finish are the highlights of his impeccable record in this game. This season he has never once been outside of the top 300k and is battling to make sure he doesn’t ruin that top 20k streak. Carlsberg don’t do FPL managers…
Key differential = While the other 3 have Valencia in their midfields, Shipstontrev has Nathan Dyer and a slightly better defence which includes Jose Enrique. Those two could thus be fundamental to his plans on first spot. Conveniently he won’t have to lose a free transfer finding a replacement for Valencia, whereas the other 3 may well have to.

    Fulham (isacki – Rank: 113,708)
How can anyone not like isacki? His previous gravatar of Javier Zanetti was so joyous that you couldn’t help but share in his enthusiasm for all things fantasy football. You'll currently recognise him as the terminator style Martin Jol stalking the boards. With his recent musings on his beloved Arsenal also earning him praise from all quarters he’s just a great regular to have in the tournament. His season hasn’t been outstanding thus far but it is worth noting he was only relegated from the top 100k after a now commonly unfortunate GW25.
Key differential = Isacki has an interesting decision to make in terms of Antonio Valencia, what he does here could be important, an inventive replacement may be what sets him apart in this group. Without knowing that though James McClean will need to outscore Sessegnon who is the more popular choice in this group.

Odense BK (Dr Ennet – Rank: 186,825)
Filling out the "good guys" group further we have Dr. Ennet and his loveable Murray gravatar. It’s getting late in the day for the doc should he wish to repeat his very decent 27,428th place finish from last season. On the plus side though he is carrying some decent form into the tournoi with 6 green arrows in his last 7 gameweeks. Looking further at his gameweek history he seems to have some kind of perverse fetish for 8 point hits; he has taken 8 of them already this season! However his truly awesome team value of 112.1m with 1.2m in the bank ensures no one should write him off as a challenger in this group, in fact I quite fancy him to progress comfortably.
Key differential = He will be hoping that Wayne Rooney can be the difference in his opening two group games as it is likely by GW28 that most of the others will be recruiting the scouse striker for their own teams.

Wisła Kraków (The Wise Krak: Alex - Rank: 787,056)
Ummmmm. I don’t really know what to say here, sorry Alex. You people can judge for yourselves: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/806646/history/. As you can see, he’s from India, he supports Arsenal and he’s been pretty crap at FPL this season . Sawwy. It would be glorious if he goes on to win the cup though, never say never I guess.
Key differential = He has already used his freebie and with that big red flag over Valencia I’m guessing it was the energetic Ecuadorian that saw the exit. As such his striker Edin Dzeko will need to outscore Rooney or Aguero over the coming run for Alex to have any chance in Group K.

Thanks Demi. I know we are doing most of everybody elses' heads in with this Europa League business but it's helping bring in a boring 2 week break and the previews will be wrapped up tonight.

FPL is a selfish game so I think it is worthwhile to look at other people's histories and give them some credit where credit is due. I'm hoping this is making FFS users' experiences on the site more personal, there's no reason we can't do this without the exclusivity of a cup competition.

Is it time to sell BAE?

At this rate, there won't be a time to sell BAE.

Kompany, Skrtel/Enrique, JEvans if you insist.
