Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Matchday Three – Day One

Giorgos Karagounis grabs the only goal of the game as Greece clinch victory against Russia to send the Group A favourites home. Petr Jiracek breaks the Polish resistance to scupper the tournament co-hosts’ dreams and end a disappointing campaign that harvested a mere two points for Franciszek Smuda’s side. For Fantasy managers, the fire sale is now on as we wield knockout stage wildcards and transfer out our assets from Russia and Poland respectively:

Russia 0 Greece 1
Dick Advocaat made just one change to the Russia first-team, with Denis Glushakov replacing Konstantinov Zyryanov in the midfield three. The Russia boss lost patience with the misfiring Aleksandr Kerzhakov – the forward had three shots (all off target) and was replaced by Roman Pavlyuchenko at half-time. Pavel Pogrebnyak and Marat Izmailov were both thrown on late in the second half as Advocaat’s side pushed for the draw that would take them through to the last eight but, despite a total of 31 attempts, they managed just two on target as Greece stood firm to send the Group A favourites home.

From a Fantasy perspective, it’s significant news. With the knockout wildcards now up and running, it’s time to rapidly ditch our Russian assets. Midfielders Alan Dzagoev and Roman Shirokov looks particularly susceptible to price drops – they rose 0.4 and 0.2 respectively since the beginning of the tournament. At the back, Yuri Zhirkov was a popular choice, while Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s 8.0 McDonald’s price tag frees up plenty cash for Fantasy managers – their owners will be scouting for alternatives in light of last night’s shock exit.

Fernando Santos made plenty alterations to his side for the Russia showdown. Micahlis Sifakis took over from Konstantinos Chalkias in goal after the latter picked up a thigh problem in the previous game against Czech Republic. Giorgos Tzavellas came in for Jose Holebas at left-back, while Konstantinos Katsouranis returned to midfield, with Konstantinos Papastathopoulos back in at centre-half after a one-match suspension. Up front, Theofanis Gekas was handed a starting role after scoring against the Czechs – Kostas Fortounis dropped to the bench. Giorgos Karagounis was the Greek hero; he provided three goalscoring opportunities and grabbed the game’s only goal to ensure his side’s progress but is now suspended for the quarter finals after receiving a somewhat debatable yellow card.

Greece’s unexpected progress certainly affords Fantasy managers the chance to grab themselves a couple of squad fillers and possibly capitalise on price rises before the quarter finals kick off. Giannis Maniatis comes in at 4.0 and is classified as a defender, though plays in midfield – he has played every minute of the tournament thus far and is nailed-on. Kyriakos Papadopoulos costs just 4.5 at the back and looks a certainty to continue at centre-half in light of Avraam Papadopoulos’ knee ligament injury. Sifakis is also 4.5 and seems set to maintain his role as number one, 5.0 priced Giorgos Samaras in the only attacker to start every game, while Konstantinos Fortounis – a 4.0 priced midfielder – started the previous fixture in the front three, though is by no means guaranteed game time.

Poland 0 Czech Republic 1
Franciszek Smuda kept faith in the same starting XI that drew with Russia in the previous game. Wojciech Szczesny warmed the bench, despite being available after serving a one-match suspension, with Przemyslaw Tyton keeping his place between the posts. Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski went into last night’s match with plenty of Fantasy managers pinning their hopes on decent returns; they were second and fifth in the Matchday Three, Day One Captain Poll but, despite managing a couple of shots apiece, failed to produce the goods as their side limped out of the tournament. Both were heavily owned and will now be subject to significant sales as we freshen up our squads.

The Czech Republic made just one change for last night’s match. Tomas Rosicky failed to recover from an Achilles injury sustained in the previous match, allowing Daniel Kolar a chance to start in the hole behind Milan Baros. Petr Jiracek found the net for the second game in succession to clinch victory for Michael Bilek’s side – since moving from a role in the double pivot to wide right against Greece he has proven to be a strong source of Fantasy points and has flown under the radar, with a mere 1.2% ownership. Jaroslav Pilar failed to pick up the points but was his side’s main creator once again, providing five goalscoring opportunities for his team mates, while three of the back-four earned an extra point due to the recovered balls rule, with only Tomas Sivok missing out.

Similar to Greece, the Czech Republic also afford Fantasy managers plenty of mid-price options to capitalise on. Right-back Theodore Gebre Selassie sits on 14 points and looks a bargain at 4.6 in the McDonald’s game, as does fellow full-back David Limbersky. Handed a start against Greece in a defensive reshuffle that has seen Michal Kadlec shift to centre-half, Limbersky is just 4.0 and his energy on the flank and forward forays look crucial to his team’s cause. Jiracek’s back-to-back goals has helped him to 17 points thus far, making a mockery of his 5.5 price tag, while Vaclav Pilar costs even less in midfield at 5.2 – he has also notched twice for the Group A winners.

Lads IMO , germany will take it relatively easy snd if they get the first gosl tonight- itll be the scenic route grom there, based on that even if Gomez starts I dont think he's a great capt choice as I feel he'll be subbed early 2nd half regardless, I think ozil/muller could shine in a tight affair and hey they jus might give the Danes a draw to keep the Dutch out, for me tonight is all about the Van - prepare for a brace at least.

I capt dzagoev last night - and on here I felt his luck would run out, now I didn't predict a Russian meltdown tbh but I was concerned about dzagoev scoring 3 games on the trot ,
All I'm saying is that I question if Gomez can score in 3 games in a row - he's scored all their goals so far and I just feel by the law of averages , this will change.

gomez has a much better support behind him than dzagoev (or pilar for that matter)
he wnt be subbed until they are well clear and could mean a brace for gomez

you cant really compare them... Russia need sides with their pants down to capitalise and play the way they want- greece and a lesser extent poland (unlike czechs in the first match) look to combat their attacking threat and theyre found out fairly sharpish... whereas Germany are just quality all the way through the 11, won't panic and will calmly break a side down if needs be. Excellent defence, excellent midfield and a clinical striker

Example of a Germany/Spain Final Team (Should take notice of Camzy)

    Neur 4m
    Badstuder Hummels Boateng Alba Arbeloa
    Ozil Iniestsa Alonso 4m 4m
    Gomez Torres 4m

So Camzy we would need to carry the 4m players from the start of the quarters or at least have them in our side before they are knocked out assuming the squad lists will be deleted?

Defenders are the only affordable options to field 11 players. Ozil is by far the most attacking German mid and despite his record in the tournament so far, I feel he is the best option still (look at his qualifying record and performance for Madrid) and worth the extra mil. Iniesta has been a huge attacking threat without scoring the points so far plus Fabregas has been relegated to the bench.

I've thought Robben has been unlucky, and could have scored well in either game.

It's been a fairly dire competition imo. With most teams more concerned with not losing rather than going for the win.

How's this for now so I can go about my day:

    Neuer Sifakis
    Selassie Lescott Maniatis Alba Debuchy
    Schweiny Pilar Fabregas Pilar Mandzukic
    Gomez Torres Benzema

Only have 0.8 in the bank after that, is there changes needed? It's only a provisional team until things are more clear after MD3.

If you can't transfer players in from teams that have been eliminated, and you can't afford a full team for the final, I presume that we will be allowed to play with less than 11 players? Is it not better to play a man down in the final, rather than having to carry a 4 million striker all the way through the knock out stages?

Because it's a very expensive position, and in the semis, you have just 4 teams. You're tipping two teams to go through, so pick their strikers. If you have a full roster of strikers, come the final, you won't be able to afford a full team regardless of who goes through because of the huge outlay on strikers.

GUYS look at this: If Netherlands 1 - 0 Portugal / Germany 1 - 0 Denmark (Germany will procede, and all others will have 3pts).
The GD is the same for Denmark, Portugal, Netherlands (all have a GD of -1).
According to UEFA the highest team scoring goals will procede (here Netherlands will be out), and still Portugal are on a tie with Denmark (both 3 goals).
Now the team having the highest position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking will procede.
For sure, all of you now said it's Portugal. But BOOM:
    10. 31,205 - Denmark
    11. 31,202 - Portugal

    That would be awesome..

Hey so just continuing off my theory about how to play the knockout stages.

I stand corrected that you need a 4.0 striker right away in the quarters. You can definitely make do with having 3 good strikers, but it's imperative the moment the QF games kick off to transfer out one of your strikers for a 4.0 in the semis. And you're going to have to take a calculated guess on who to replace too, because if Greece get knocked out as expected, Mitroglou, bless him, is going to be red flagged and not available for transfer. Therefore, it's wise to pick two strikers from teams who are heavily backed to get through. Silva/Torres + Gomez look good picks.

The vast majority of your team planning will take place for those 8 transfers you get for the semi-finals, and you want to make as few transfers for 4.0 players as possible, therefore you MUST keep hold of a 4.0 keeper from the start, and a defender at 4.0 (Maniatis or Limbersky).

          True, true. But in theory.

If Greece get through, or there are more upsets, having a 4.0 striker is still beneficial since strikers have badly underfired this tournament.

Are you really going to pick Salpingidis or Geka for the semis and final? How about Baros? Or Cassano?

I feel the midfield is where the points potential really is, and maximizing that area is beneficial overall.

On the idea of bringing in 4m players after the QF kicks off, surely we dont want to be wasting half of our 8 transfers for the Semis bringing in the 4m players. You're going to want to have a couple of them in before the QFs, no?

A hell lot of things are to be considered today ->

    A) If both Portugal & Denmark win ->

Then three teams will be on same points.
    1. Higher points in matches among these teams. All will be same
    2. Better goal difference in matches among these teams.
    Germany won 1-0 against Portugal
    Portugal 3-2 against Denmark
Denmark 2 goal difference win make sure that Germany go out

    B) If Germany & Holland win=>
    1. Rule 1 won't be enough.
    2. 1-0 for Denmark,3-2 for Portugal so a 1 goal win for Holland mean all at the same position.
    3. In that scenario higher number of goals scored among these matches will qualify which will certainly be Denmark or Portugal

4.Holland 1:0 Portugal is the only result where we need farther rules
Superior goal difference in all matches => Den =0 now so will be negative
Portugal = 0 now so will be -1 as well.
    Holland will also be -1

    5. Higher number of goal scored is all matches .
    Portugal will be 4
    Holland =2
Denmark=3 ... so if the cannot score Portugal are through

All in all a very complex situation . If you have a certain case you can easily find but for probable cases ... there are a hell lot of them

    TO CUT IT SHORT =>

If Holland need to go through the best case is a win for Germany(which is possible) and a 2 goal win for them (I am not so sure )

Germany can still go out if the lose the game by 2 goals or more and Portugal win against Holland

Ok, so after the 1st quarter of the final group stage gameweek, many managers are still very hopeful of reaching the quarter finals in the Friendly World Cup. Here, I will take a look at the current scores and what the differentials will be in each tie. Only Brazil and Chile have guaranteed top spot and South Korea and Ivory Coast eliminated there are 12 teams currently awaiting their fate. I think you will agree that things couldnt be tighter!

    Group A)
With Switzerland on 6 pts and close to progression, Egypt are gone. So it is a fight between Uruguay and Slovenia to join probable group winners Switzerland in the quarters. Slovenia (Aatish and Kostja) have the harder task as they lost their head to head with Uruguay and they take on group leaders Switzerland. Switzerland (JK and James Fitz) have a narrow advantage 32-31 and have 4 players today with Robben and Gomez their differentials. Slovenia also have 4 players today with Willems and Rvp x2. Both teams have Andersen.
Uruguay have a 12pt lead over whipping boys of the group Egypt (Huth the Daddy and ILA) 36-24. Uruguay (Empirikal and 4Vets) have 5 players playing today with a double Andersen differential. Egypt have 3 playing today with Neuer the only differential. Both teams have Ronaldo and Robben.

    Group B)
With Brazil guaranteed top of the group status, there is a head to head clash between Ghana and Mexico to see who joins the South Americans in the quarter finals. Ghana (Eoin and Porkie) had a slight advantage on goal difference and can boast a 27-25 lead heading in to these matches. Ghana have 5 players today, Gomez, Sneijder and Muller. Mexico (Sleep Talk, Snowy84 and their mascots Boom Shakalaka and MsRed19) have Ozil and Khedira as their differentials. Both teams have Andersen.
South Korea will look to claim the scalp of Brazil (Forca and Epic Fail). The South Korean combination of Evs and Bonz are up a point 28-27. Both teams have 4 players each today. South Korean differentials Sneijder, Badstuber and RVP. Brazil will look to Gomez and Perieira to keep their unbeaten status intact. Both teams have Andersen.

    Group C)
Any 2 from 3 in group C. That is the equation as Argentina, Serbia and Japan stake claims to be in the quarter finals. Argentina have the easier task as they are on 6pts. Avoid defeat against Serbia and they wont have to worry about the other result in the group. They are doing their job as they have a 13pt lead over Serbia (Teddy and Messimerized) 36-23. Argentina (Canadian Football and Archie) have 3 players today. Sneijder their differential. Serbia have 4 players. They will look to Gomez and Hummels to bring in heavy scores. Both teams have Andersen and Ronaldo.
Japan (Wazza goal and Djerbil) are doing what they have to do leading already eliminated Ivory Coast (The Giggs Boson and Mull) 38-26. Both teams have 5 playing today. Ronaldo Hummels and Gomez the Japanese differentials. Ivory Coast opted for Zimling, RVP and ozil. Both teams have Andersen.

    Group D)
Chile partnership of (Menly and Catmac) have already topped the group leaving the other 3 teams of USA, Australia and Turkey fighting it out for the runner up spot. USA need only a draw against Australia to secure a quarter final spot. Australia and Turkey need results to go their way. USA (Gargarmeland Goldstonemr) lead Australia (Shipstontrev and Bal4tom) 26-19. USA have doubled up on Andersen and Robben. Australia have Khedira, Gomez, Ozil and Andersen.
Turkey duo ( FC Borcelona and Optimus) are 40-39 against group toppers Chile. Both teams have 4 each today. Turkey have Robben and Huntelaar while Chile have Ronaldo and Ozil. Both have doubled on Andersen.

So i'm trying to build something (manic evil laugh) and I have found a way to get all of this data for each player, automatically: The example here is Selassie:

    [29, "a", 1906131, "Theodor", "Gebre Selassie", "Gebre Selassie", null, "", "2012-02-29T19:04:59Z", 45, 46, 46, 45, 46, null, null, null, 100, 100, 1.0, 3.0, 1, 0, -1, 0, true, 1, 28462, 5.2, 4.7, 2357, 21691, 4495, 268, 2508, 0, 14, 7, 4.7, 4.7, 0.0, 270, 0, 1, 1, 5, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 20, 2, 2, 1, -1, 0, 0]

I'm hoping this looks familiar to a few people that have tried to build computer models and needed the data that seems to underpin the variations of this game (used by Premier league fantasy football and also for mcdonalds euro 2012 league).

My question is, does anyone have an authoritative list of what each figure means? Could be quite a lot of work to distinguish all the zeros for example by comparing the string with the website rendered data

    anyone?
