Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Quarter Finals – Day Four

Italy outplay England from start to finish over 120 minutes but still require spot-kicks to book a place in the last four of Euro after a resilient display by Roy Hodgson’s men. The goalless draw was at least beneficial to Fantasy managers, with both defences returning clean sheets for their owners last night – the Azzurri now square up to Germany on Thursday, while England board the next flight home:

England 0 Italy 0
Roy Hodgson kept faith in the same XI that saw off Ukraine in the previous match, with Wayne Rooney partnering Danny Welbeck up top. The former looked well off the pace throughout, though, and managed just two efforts all game – indeed, as an attacking force, England were virtually non-existent, with a single shot on target all evening. Joe Hart picked up eight points, thanks to eight saves and a clean sheet, while both Joleon Lescott and Glen Johnson benefitted from the recovered balls rule to produce seven points apiece. Lescott finished the tournament as England’s top points scorer with 24, just one ahead of Steven Gerrard – the skipper picked up five points last night after registering a staggering 13 recovered balls; a clear indication of just how much his side were under the cosh as he helped break up wave after wave of Italian attacks.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli made three alterations from the game against Republic of Ireland. Leonardo Bonucci replaced the injured Giorgio Chiellini at centre-half, while Thiago Motta and Antonio Di Natale made way for Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli respectively.

Bonucci was Italy’s main performer after producing an eight point haul thanks to 11 recovered balls but Chiellini may return by Thursday, raising doubts against his acquisition. Ignazio Abate looks an absolute steal at 4.9 in the McDonald’s game – with Christian Maggio now suspended for the semis, the former’s role at right-back looks nailed-on. Federico Balzaretti also stood out, picking up a seven point return at the back and is available for 5.4 – whether you’d want to back them against the Germans, though, is another matter entirely.

Andrea Pirlo was unlucky not to grab any attacking returns – he provided six goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (equalled, intriguingly, by Claudio Marchisio) while Fantasy owners of Antonio Cassano and, in particular, Mario Balotelli will be frustrated after the pair fired 15 shots between them, with the latter managing 10. Both look likely to lead the line again on Thursday and, with so much uncertainty over Joachim Low’s forwards, look decent mid-price alternatives for those Fantasy managers who fancy the Azzurri to upset the odds, coming in at 8.0 and 8.5 respectively in the McDonald’s game.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

My plan is this. I believe Spain and Germany will make the final, so I'll take 2 players from each Italy and Portugal and transfer them out for the final. If Spain fail, then there will be 1 more transfer (-3 pts) since I have 3 Spaniards. If Germany fails, then 2 more transfers (-6). If both Germany and Spain fail, then GG my dear top 1000. 😀

This will be my semi final team I think..!

    Casillas Drobny
    Arbeloa Hummels Badstuber Alba
    Iniesta Alonso Fabregas/Pirlo Ozil
    Podolski Torres/Balotelli

The Fab/Torres thing is depending on which one of them starts!

I would like to have Torres in team, but I'm not confident about that matter since he is not sure starter. I ask myself what are the odds that Torres start against Portugal, and DON'T start in final. That's possible, right?

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Euro 2012 - Matchday 4 Award

(READ THIS FIRST: THIS IS THE AWARD FOR PLAYERS OF FFS EURO 2012 ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE PEOPLE FROM THE FRIENDLY WORLD CUP! THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE AWARD FOR THAT. THANK YOU.)

Ladies and Gentlemen, there is dissention in the ranks. Some people on FFS are claiming that certain Council member(s) have done a Jimmy Carr and avoided playing by the rules of the Award in order to increase their chances of victory in a truly unvaliant turn of events. Others have graciously accepted the bravery needed to make such bold decisions and their success. A few have claimed that England deserved to go through last night... only kidding. I would just like to clarify however that there is no limit to the number of differential picks one manager can make to remain eligible for the Award. And now in a totally unrelated matter, let's focus on handing out the award for a Matchday that at one stage looked destined to be heavily dominated
    by one man....

I judged the award by the rules posted here. http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html

    To recap:

A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy

Honourable Mentions - A couple of decisions which were worthy of note if not the award:

-Mac chose the right Portuguese midfielder in Moutinho whose assist contributed to a 7 point haul. This plucky choice has seen Mac in the running since the start of the Matchday and has earned him is first honourable mention of the tournament.
-Parmtree and Drinky were courageous and spent the extra 1.5 on the more adventurous of the Spanish pair of holding midfielders, Alonso. His spot kick duties also contibuted to a spectacular 14 points which no doubt left his owners jumping for joy
-Demented Flamingo made the unique decision of having a player in his side who was already eliminated in Andrews. Although next Matchday this will be unexciting, it was something certainly worthy a mention this week

    And now for the winner:

The German defense found itself heavily invested in. No one seemed to give the Greeks a chance of scoring despite having found the net in their last 12 internationals. As it turned out one man believed in them and gave the armband to Salpingidis. ENR was this man and he was rewarded with a goal and an assist. This valorous choice has been favourite for the award since Day 2 as it ticked all the boxes for the neccesary criteria.

ENR has earned back to back Awards now , so it is time for others to come to the fore and start taking even more risks. With only 2 Matchday's to go, time is well and truly running out.

Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

Very nicely handled Light Knight. The right pick won - picking 15 from all of those squads was not guaranteed to hit gold anyway, though undoubtedly it helped. I think he will find it harder to manage in the semis with his choices restricted to well-known starters. He's totally gonna punt on the alternative German front three though. I just know it.

I think ENR deserved the award too, but it will be hard for others to compete when someone is hell-bent on just targeting the valour award.

What about me? I am happy with 70pts, thank you very much. 🙂 Anyways, I think I need a brace from a Wheater like player to grab this award.

And both of you, please try and keep dishing out these awards as much as of you can even during FPL. We'll help as much as we can.

It's been an absolutely brilliant idea.

I'm very seriously considering no CR7. Spain look good for a CS to me, and Portugal have precious little outside of Ronny. I like the double-up SPA/GER def, I've current got five defs from those two countries.

The German press conference has just finished. As it was only the goalkeeping coach, Andreas Köpke, and Mesut Özil who were in attendance, there was little of substance to be heard.

    * Köpke said about Schweinsteiger: "He has minor problems with his ankle, for which he has received intensive treatment in the last few days. We all presume that he'll play on Thursday."

    * Er... that's it

Joachim Löw and Miroslav Klose will be conducting tomorrow's press conference (12:30 CET). Bet you they won't say anything much either.

    Spain intel... from the Beeb,

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque says that they will make special plans to neutralise Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo in Wednesday's Euro 2012 semi-final.

"We will be taking special care of Cristiano Ronaldo," he said. "It won't be an individual (marking) thing, there will be permanent help as there was two years ago (in the game between the sides in the World Cup)."

Here's link to that game, reviewed by The Guardian.

who said that Germany will playwith Gomez if they play Italy and with Klose if they will play spain??

i am sure i read that somewhere,or that's just speculation?

it would make sense in my opinion cause England defence is simmilar to Greece

i might take a gamble and get Gomez in and see what happens

Ozil said that he linked much better with this group of players than we did with others. I think it's gonna be Klose, Reus, Muller, and Ozil. But this is just my silly speculation.

It was a suggestion by a English-language website called Bundesliga Fanatic. Not sure why anyone is giving this credence - it's pure speculation from enthusiasts who have no inside information. They've never claimed otherwise, to be fair.

I cant see anyone to be so sure in predicting Germany start-up team, including that rumors for a mole in their camp.

Oh, change of plans. Just realised leader in my league has grand fetish on Portugal and will probably load full house of them. He already got 2 forwards from Portugal. Since I'm 20 points behind, is it good to risk it and go on 4 spanish defenders? I mean keeper + 3 defenders. I'll keep CR7 just in case plan fails cause I think he will surely be the reason if that happens. What do you think I should do?

Personally I'm not a big fan of quadrupling on a defence - such a lot of eggs to put in one basket. A single lucky goal, undeserved penalty, whatever, and all those points disappear.

Then again, 20 points is a lot to catch up right now so maybe something mad like that is what you're left with.

I agree, I'm also not fan of put all eggs in one basket. But I don't know any other way to win here. Second in my league, which is 15 points in front, also already have 4 players from Portugal, and 0 from Spain. That makes me more confident that Spain is my ticket to success - or to fail.

Other strategy is hoping I will nail captain like a boss, and they won't. Not sure about that.

Going without Italy is too risky. If for instance they do manage an upset you will be in big trouble. I am thinking 4/5 Spain, 3 Germans, 3 Portugese and 1/2 Italians.

I see a lot of people are getting two Spanish defenders & Ronaldo...

If Ronaldo scores, two defenders without a clean sheet.

If he doesnt score, you have wasted 11m.

      Too much defensive midfielders imo.

And I don't see a point for having Lopes as a filler.
Maybe Meireles->Marchisio and Lopes->Abate, would give you possibly one more starter and Italy cover as well.
