Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Quarter Finals – Day Four

Italy outplay England from start to finish over 120 minutes but still require spot-kicks to book a place in the last four of Euro after a resilient display by Roy Hodgson’s men. The goalless draw was at least beneficial to Fantasy managers, with both defences returning clean sheets for their owners last night – the Azzurri now square up to Germany on Thursday, while England board the next flight home:

England 0 Italy 0
Roy Hodgson kept faith in the same XI that saw off Ukraine in the previous match, with Wayne Rooney partnering Danny Welbeck up top. The former looked well off the pace throughout, though, and managed just two efforts all game – indeed, as an attacking force, England were virtually non-existent, with a single shot on target all evening. Joe Hart picked up eight points, thanks to eight saves and a clean sheet, while both Joleon Lescott and Glen Johnson benefitted from the recovered balls rule to produce seven points apiece. Lescott finished the tournament as England’s top points scorer with 24, just one ahead of Steven Gerrard – the skipper picked up five points last night after registering a staggering 13 recovered balls; a clear indication of just how much his side were under the cosh as he helped break up wave after wave of Italian attacks.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli made three alterations from the game against Republic of Ireland. Leonardo Bonucci replaced the injured Giorgio Chiellini at centre-half, while Thiago Motta and Antonio Di Natale made way for Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli respectively.

Bonucci was Italy’s main performer after producing an eight point haul thanks to 11 recovered balls but Chiellini may return by Thursday, raising doubts against his acquisition. Ignazio Abate looks an absolute steal at 4.9 in the McDonald’s game – with Christian Maggio now suspended for the semis, the former’s role at right-back looks nailed-on. Federico Balzaretti also stood out, picking up a seven point return at the back and is available for 5.4 – whether you’d want to back them against the Germans, though, is another matter entirely.

Andrea Pirlo was unlucky not to grab any attacking returns – he provided six goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (equalled, intriguingly, by Claudio Marchisio) while Fantasy owners of Antonio Cassano and, in particular, Mario Balotelli will be frustrated after the pair fired 15 shots between them, with the latter managing 10. Both look likely to lead the line again on Thursday and, with so much uncertainty over Joachim Low’s forwards, look decent mid-price alternatives for those Fantasy managers who fancy the Azzurri to upset the odds, coming in at 8.0 and 8.5 respectively in the McDonald’s game.

Would love to see one of Oliveira/Varela to start budget-wise, but Almeida is probably preferred for CF over those two.

    Hypothetical question.

If there was an algorithm that could predict with 80-90% accuracy future points returns for FPL

Would you use it? Or would it just take all the fun out of the game as everyone would be using it?

What's the purpose of fantasy football, if you already know how much a points a player is going to score. Everyone will have almost the same team. Not to mention it won't be fun anymore.

    If its of any use....
Prandelli could make some changes in attack with some early indications suggesting that Antonio Cassano could be replaced by Antonio Di Natale.

“Yesterday’s game was the most difficult for Balotelli and Cassano,” he added. “Antonio, during his fourth game after months of inactivity, could have paid the price for that.

“I really liked Balotelli. He did what he was asked – to keep the two English centre-backs deep. Perhaps he was a little unfortunate with his shots, but his performance was more than acceptable.

Won't double up on Portugal's defense. Get a Spaniard or Italian in for Coentrao. Gomez is a big risk. I would downgrade him and upgrade Moutinho to Ozil. If Torres starts he should be a better option than Nani as you already have CR7.

Still have 2 FTs and .8 in the bank. My options seem to be:

    A. Drop CR7 for Nani and then upgrade either Busquets to Iniests or my 4.0 to Reus

    or

    B. Drop CR7 for Oliveira and upgrade to anyone I want

Currently my other two forwards are Gomez and Silva

I think it's almost essential to keep Ronaldo for 2 reasons

      1) If Portugal go through you'll want him for the final and getting him back will take up more than 1 transfer
      2) If Portugal go out he frees up the funds to rearrange your team for the final

That's what we need to do in order to get a half decent 11 out to play....you'll just see a red icon stating unavailable....just live with it....

Dont transfer them out as you'll not be able to get them back in. I've four 4mil players still in my squad.. And I still can't come up with a good 11!!

Personally, I prefer to transfer out deadwood to maximise the number of starters in my squad.

Toying with the idea of Piqué for first Captain. Guaranteed start and snuffles up those RB's. 7 points from my captain would be most welcome!!

Could be a good move.....playing FPL we are just not use to RB pts, but defenders have racked up some good points....

We are used to the fpl rule "Striker scores 1 or 2 goals he gets 3 bonus points". Realistically 7 points is a good captain score for this game, slow and steady and all that.

At this phase of the tournament with only one chance to twist, I would gladly welcome 7 p from a captain. Before SFs however, I think 7 from a C would have been something that is just barely acceptable.

If I have unlimited transfers for the next round (unused WC), what would be the best strategy for maximizing points in SFs? Focus on the favorites Spain & Germany? Invest equally in all 4 teams? Any input would be welcome - thanks.
