Scout Scribbles – Ba Helps Magpies See Off Monaco

Newcastle put the talk of an Andy Carroll return to one side by chalking up their first win of the pre-season courtesy of a 1-0 win over AS Monaco. Jonny Evans looks unlikely to make the start of the season for United, though Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling seem certain to be ready, while Roberto Martinez’s faith in the talent up north sees Wigan acquire yet another prospect from the Scottish Premier League, as the Latics snap up 19-year-old Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen:

Monaco 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew’s side bounced back from their 1-0 friendly defeat by Chemnitzer last week to see off French outfit Monaco. The Newcastle boss is still without those players who participated in the recent Euro 2012 tournament but still rolled out a strong looking side in a 4-4-2 formation. Davide Santon started at right-back, with Ryan Taylor his second half replacement, while Jonas Gutierrez began the game at left-back.

Summer signings Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana were handed starts in midfield; the former was afforded his fair share of set-piece duties and almost helped his side take the lead within a minute, with Shola Ameobi hitting the woodwork following a corner from the new boy. Demba Ba partnered Ameobi up top and grabbed the game’s only goal just after the half-hour mark, highlighting his efficiency when played as part of a front pairing; Ba was ineffectual when shifted out to the flank in the latter part of last season following the purchase of Papiss Cisse but served a reminder of his potency in a more central position.

The Magpies boss made a trio of alterations at half time, allowing Santon to move to the left and Gutierrez to shift forward into a more natural midfield role. Ryan Taylor’s introduction saw him handed corner kick duties and he almost made an instant impact, teeing Ba up to nod just wide. Pardew’s side missed further chances to put the game beyond doubt, with Gabriel Obertan particularly culpable late on but the Magpies held on for a comfortable win.

Newcastle Starting XI: Harper; Santon (R Taylor 56), Simpson, Williamson (Perch 46), Gutierrez; Amalfitano (Obertan 63), Abeid (Vuckic 46), Bigirimana (Tiote 63), Sammy Ameobi (Tavernier 46); Shola Ameobi ( Gosling 63), Ba (Marveaux 79)

In Other News…

Jonny Evans could miss the start of the season for Man United, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed. The defender was a strong cut-price favourite last season following Nemanja Vidic’s cruciate ligament injury in December but he is still recovering from an ankle operation and may miss out on the opening day trip to Goodison Park, according to his manager. Ferguson had some good news on the injury front, though, and expects Vidic – along with Chris Smalling – to be raring to go for the start of the upcoming campaign:

Jonny has had an operation. I am not sure he will start the season but he won’t be far away. Chris Smalling has done a bit of training. The ruptured groin muscle he had certainly needed a lot of attention. He is gradually progressing and I expect him to start the season. Vidic will start the season, I am sure of that.

Roberto Martinez has made his first signing of the summer transfer window by snapping up Scottish youngster Fraser Fyvie. The Wigan boss already has a couple of first-team regulars from north of the border in the shape of James McCarthy and James McArthur and returned once again to sign the highly-rated youngster from Aberdeen. The afore-mentioned pair were integral in the Latics’ storming run of form at the end of the previous season and were fielded in the double-pivot in Martinez’s change to 3-4-2-1 and according to the manager, Fyvie could well provide strong competition for places in the upcoming campaign:

Technically he’s very gifted, enjoys playing in the midfield where he can cover large areas, he’s very powerful off the ball and in possession is someone who can read the tempo of the game very well.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

It's another way of saying "we have no concrete information", I guess if they have a reliable source then fair enough but I suspect most of the time they're just speculating. Sky news is not news, it's mostly conjecture.

    New Post Gotcha....repost from last

Interesting news coming out of the Villa camp. Hutton has reportedly been left out of the squad for the US tour, which would seem to re-enforce the feeling that he is not in PL’s plans going forward. This is an interesting development for those looking for a cheap way in to the Villa defence as it opens up the options for Lichaj or Lowton at RB. Also rumours growing that Ron Vlaar’s move is imminent, which if is true makes Collins and Dunne’s futures at Villa less certain.

Not sure whether this has been done already so apologies in advance for any duplication, but it may be of help to some.

I did include Hutton not being in the tour of the US squad in that article of the uefacouncil website yesterday - he is injured but there are also other players on the tour who are injured - implying he will leave (good riddance).

Just to add: I think Hutton will leave but Lowton/Lichaj will do well to be first choice. I'd expect a first-choice RB to be signed before Hutton goes - I like both of the youngsters who could play there (plus Herd or Clark) but playing in an attacking 4-4-2 I would rather have someone with a bit of experience, like Simpson.

What position offers the best value for money?

    Strikers are normally quite expensive.

I think defenders are better value for money... if you divide their points total by their price.

Is getting 5 expensive defenders good or bad?

It's an interesting question and one that I've tried to reduce to quantitative analysis without compelling results. I had my best season playing 3-4-3 with one expensive def and a bunch of cheapies, plus one cheap mid and one cheap striker rotating for the final spot. That said, I had a pretty respectable top 10k finish playing 5-3-2 most of the season, and it's not unheard of for very high finishers to employ that format.

Generally speaking the problem with going big at the back is that you tend to reduce your potential for BPs and captaincy options - and a combination of those two things can add to a lot of points dropped over a season. Furthermore in seasons gone by the Big Team v Big Team games tended to be cagey, low scoring affairs, and that trend has reversed in recent seasons which probably tilts the risk/reward balance further away from going big at the back.

That's not to say it can't work, but there are always bargains at the back so with three expensive defs you may still find it making sense to play 5-3-2 or 5-2-3 some weeks.

              What about the strikers?

If you have £20m for 3 strikers, is it best to spread it over 3 average strikers; 3x£6.5m strikers, for example?

Or get an expensive big man, with 2 cheap players?

My opinion is that you need some expensive fwds/mids, at least two, probably three. So with that budget I'd go for one big and two cheapies, assuming I had two expensive mids.

If you've only got £20m for 3 strikers, I think it's time for a rethink personally. That barely allows you Rooney/Aguero/RVP and 2 x £4m cheapies. If I did only have £20m for 3 strikers though, I'd probably be looking at something like £8.5m, £6.5m, £5m.

If I were you I'd be budgeting more like £26-£30m up front.

£20m was just a random figure; ignore the value.

My principal was; is spreading the budget across 3 strikers, better than having one big striker & 2 cheap strikers?

I think it varies season to season, last year you needed 2 expensive ones --> RVP & Rooney / Aguero if not all 3.

This season, I'd say I'm likely to start with a split of something like £13m, £10m, £6m.

The problem with 3 expensive defenders is, if the fixtures are something like this:

          West Ham vs Wigan
          Newcastle vs Chelsea

And you have John Terry and James Tomkins - are you benching Tomkins for Terry? I think 3 expensive defneders will give you plenty of selection headaches. Use your 15 man squad wisely.

That is another thing I was thinking about; is it best to have 15 good players, or have, say 2 cheap players that you will never play, to allow you to spend more money on your actual starting 11?

You can use your sub to rotate...

Some sort of balance, I'll probably have a couple of £4.0m defenders / GKs to rotate and a £4.5m midfielder who plays 90 mins who can play in nice fixtures / if somebody is injured. Keep following the advice on here and you won't go far wrong.

That would be fine, assuming that your starting 11 never get injured, suspended, suffer a run of poor form, play in a slightly weak team who have a tough run of fixtures, etc. But you won't be that lucky, so you'll need all of your subs throughout the season.

Teams who have one non-playing cheapy sub may get away with it if they're lucky, but with two you're asking for trouble.

The going "big at the back" is really successful when it works because, basically, it's the most boring strategy and few people go with it.

The problem now is that there aren't really any teams that are consistently going to get you clean sheets. Chelsea managed 24 one season, no-one is going to get close to that next season.

I look for returns of 20x a player's value when picking my initial team - and it's fair to say that year on year more defenders fall into this category than in any other position. But this is normally because the defenders are cheap, rather than they score heavily - and often it's only one or two of the top defenders who will get you 140+ points. Much better to find a Raylor or Simpson to get you 100 odd points rather than risk a Baines or Vidic who ned to get 160+.

This is something I've thought a lot about too, for lots of years too. Unfortunately I can't really give you a better answer than the ones that have been given.

Basically: it varies. And mostly, it varies with how well the strikers produce, for me. In my first season back in 06/07 we had a situation where the expensive strikers failed to produce, making it very very viable to play with 5 big defenders, 3 cheap strikers and a couple of big hitters in midfield instead.

This season in contrast loads of points came from the big strikers like Persie, Aguero and Rooney and all, making it wiser to invest there instead. They basically set the tone for me - if you think the strikers are going to produce - then get them.

The original game was created by Fantasy League Ltd in 1991 and captured the public imagination when it was licensed to 90 Minutes magazine prior to the 1992-93 Premier League; coincidentally the very season Sky Sports invented English top-flight football.

Productivity in offices promptly dropped by 81.52%, leading to the current global recession, which experts have blamed on shoddy banking practices instead of hundreds of thousands of blokes called Darren wasting hours trying to figure out how to accommodate Nicolas Anelka without having to ship out Leighton Baines or Ryan Shawcross.

The rules have always been straightforward. Once your imaginary squad has been purchased and a starting XI selected, points are generally awarded for player appearances, goals scored, assists, clean sheets and penalties saved, while bookings, dismissals and goals or penalties conceded result in points deductions.

    Good historical info

    1. What's with the Chelsea DGW first week? Is this definate?

    2. How likely is Ian Harte to hold down a regular place this season?

    3. How do you apply for these UEFA competitions? Wan't in last year but they always sounded interesting.

      2) Not likely with Shorey's arrival although he might get the odd game or two.

      1) They definatly have a double gameweek because chelsea play in super cup before gmwk 3 starts.
      2) Reading have just signed nicky shorey meaning hartes game time is limited.
      3) Not sure. Talk to parm tree or isaki about that one.

      1. It's 100% as far as I'm aware.

      2. Nicky Shory has resigned for 1 year and has played some of his best football of his career at Reading. We don't know if they will rotate or whether one will play most weeks. The consensus is that it's not worth the risk.

Is Chris Smalling a nailed on starter and is he likely to start at centre back or right back for United this season?

No I dont think you can call him nailed on.

Only nailed on are Vidic and Evra i guess right now with Jones, Smalling, Rio, Evans and Rafael vying for the other 2 spots.

They'd want to replace Evra soon he's just awful now, he can't defend and is always caught high and dry when he attacks.

Phil Jones has become a bit of an FPL spoiler, life would be much easier if he sodded off back to Blackburn. He's not going to start every game, but he crops up in a variety of irritating positions at the expence of potential bargains like Rafael.

Only Vidic De Gea and Evra nailed on for now.

I'd rate Rafaels chances on nailing on that RB slot high though.

Quick guide to FPL on twitter.

This is the official FPL account, which gives authorised updates and has 279,000 plus followers.
    https://twitter.com/premierleague

This is a fake account and its tweets are not, I repeat not, official FPL tweets. When it says FPL will lauch by such and such a date they do not actually know. They have about 1,700 followers.
    https://twitter.com/FPL1213

...I've been caught out by the fake one before and a number of other people here have as well.

Is he not an Olympian, though? Might affect his GW1.

Gone for Tomkins and Nolan in Sky to balance the books, along with Hooiveld for an early punt if Saints keep a good home form.

Tomkins is great for FPL. Jon Reesons convinced me as well. Not sure about Sky though, with just 30 transfers clean sheets are key and a defence from the top teams might be better, leaves you more room to move attackers around.

Agreed. But with Silva, Hazard, Siggy, Valencia, Nolan, Rooney and Aguero something has to give! A bargain is bound to turn up, and someone might flop, which will free up defensive cash. The difference in points from defence to attack was immense last year, like more than double, can't see the value in defenders at £7.0m+ when strikers are £8-10m?

Mid price prob the way to go Huth, Jags etc. Was hoping Vertonghen would be underpriced but no chance!

good point. I've gone for one team with a great defence that hopefully I won't have to touch, and another with an awesome attack. I suspect the attacking one over the season will do well.
