The Burning Question: Will Fernando Torres Step Up For Chelsea?

Just seven goals in 46 appearances tells the sorry story of Fernando Torres’s frustrating time at Chelsea. In the latest of our pre-season Burning Question articles our contributors examine the chances of the Spanish striker recapturing the form that persuaded Chelsea to shell out £50m on the former Liverpool man…

Since joining the London outfit in the January transfer window of 2011 many of the Stamford Bridge faithful have been left perplexed at the poor form of a player that scored 82 goals in 214 appearances for Athletico Madrid, and 65 strikes during his four years at Liverpool. As the goals dried up, Torres has struggled to sustain a starting role: last season Didier Drogba was given the nod to lead the line and repaid that faith with a string of important goals.

However, this season sees a different Chelsea setup. Drogba has departed for China and Torres finds himself with very little competition up front; currently only Daniel Sturridge is vying for the striker’s role, with Romelu Lukaku now departed for a season-long loan at the Hawthorns. While bodies are clearly required up front, the club have instead invested heavily in midfield, with Torres’s compatriot, Juan Mata, now joined by Belgian Eden Hazard and Brazilian Oscar to form a lineup brimming with creativity and craft. A confident Torres could provide the final piece in title challenging jigsaw, but can he raise his game and gain legendary status at the Bridge?

Granville says…
In my opinion, no. Many words have been written about his fee and the expectation that came with it, but a closer examination of his style of play and that of Chelsea, looks to me at least, in conflict. A direct counter-attacking style of football where he has to come for the ball, doesn’t suit and unless Chelsea can successfully employ a number ’10’ who can pick up the ball and play it in front of him, I cannot see him ever being a consistent goalscorer. Unfortunately, a succession of injuries and surgery has removed the explosiveness he had five years ago, so he’s had to adapt his game. There’s no question that he works hard for his team-mates but that will never be enough if the goals fail to flow.

Despite being one of his biggest fans, Vincent Del Bosque showed a lack of faith by choosing to go without a striker in all but one of the Euro 2012 games, only offering him a start against Ireland, the weakest of opponents. He duly returned a brace in that game and a goal against a 10-man Italy out on it’s feet.

Having already turned more corners than a Rubik’s cube, I’d be hugely surprised to see a transformation in form that comes anywhere near close to his dazzling first couple of years at Liverpool.

Andy says…
Oh god I hope so. I really, really do. His confidence has to have been boosted by his Euro 2012 goals and his form at the end of last season. With Didier Drogba having departed for pastures new, Torres really needs to step up and command that striking spot for Chelsea – not least because they have so few options available. Considering Roman Abramovich has been splashing the big bucks to amass an attacking midfielder armoury to now include Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata, Torres will surely get the ammunition.

Paul says…
Despite limited game time in the recent Euro 2012 tournament, Torres finished as top scorer and demonstrated his ability to function at the highest level – for as long as the tactics are suited to his style of play. While the searing pace and burst of acceleration beyond the last defender – a trademark of his time at Liverpool – may no longer be in evidence, he is still capable of excelling in the season ahead, providing Chelsea play to his strengths; something they have yet to do in El Nino’s time at the Bridge.

Much depends on Roberto Di Matteo’s ability to integrate the new signings such as Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin alongside Juan Mata in the attacking midfield positions behind Torres, while implementing a change in playing style. If the Blues boss can achieve this seamlessly, the Spanish forward could finally flourish for the Londoners. Although a return to the 24-goal haul of 2007/08 seems unlikely, a confident Torres could quite comfortably hit the 15+ mark; on the other hand, there’s no doubt he has the potential to hugely frustrate his Fantasy owners in any given Gameweek.

Mark says…
This has to be the time for Torres. Having struggled to earn his opportunity to lead the Chelsea attack and fend off the claims of Didier Drogba, he now looks assured of starts playing in front of what is arguably the most creative midfield in the League. Service shouldn’t be an issue, then, and, if Torres can take confidence from his Golden Boot winning displays in Euro 2012, I see no reason why the goals won’t follow.

Fantasy managers are on board regardless of his long-term prospects due to the double Gameweek but how many are actually looking to carry Torres beyond the opening week? For many, Wayne Rooney is being measured up as an immediate replacement but if Torres produces against Wigan and Reading, the temptation to hold for the visit of Newcastle will be strong. He has every chance of working his way into our lineups and Chelsea folklore – if he can get his head right and take a couple of early chances, he could make a mockery of his Fantasy price tag. Failure in the first few weeks, however, and both Fantasy managers and Roberto Di Matteo will waste little time in lining up a new recruit.

I do, I know that the championship is no indicator of premier leauge success but with 34 goals last season I think he will prove to be a great differential. If not I can always go with lukaku since he signed for West Brom.

Cerny won't play, though I'm guessing you know that.

Keep an eye on Nelsen as a potential way to save 0.5 on Fabio, otherwise seems pretty good.

Personally not sold on Hazard just yet as a fantasy option, quality player undoubtedly but relied on penalties a helluva lot last year for Lille, add to that the fact Torres may or may not hit form, if not Hazard's assists will dry up. Torres is enough Chelsea attacking cover as far as I'm concerned.

Lambert's fixtures are shite, keep in mind you'll more than likely have to play 3 of McClean, Allen, Guthrie and Lambert every week so make sure they rotate well. See GW3 for example, Allen has Arsenal at home, Lambert has United at home and Mcclean has Swansea away while Guthrie doesn't have a fixture. Hard to see points from that.

Yeah I'm on the edge with Hazard. I could definitely get rid of him and put someone a tad bit cheaper and beef up either my defense or goalkeeper or both. I'm just stuck on who to get. I could also downgrade Bale to Siggy and free up some funds. Thoughts?

Would keep Bale, I'm definitely starting with him assuming he'll remain fit.

Are you intent on keeping 2 million banked? Could always go with Rooney instead of Lambert from the start.

Lescott to Clichy, or a cheaper player could make you some money. Definitely think you've enough spent on your defence just a matter of deciding how to spread it.

Hazard to Kagawa maybe then use 0.5 to do Cerny > Federici and the other 0.5 to upgrade Allen or Guthrie.

Also prefer Michu to McClean but that's just personal preference

reguarding Cerny the only other goal keeper is greene, would Cerny not start?
Michu is largely unproven to me, with siggy and sinclair and caulker now gone I don't see a lot of talent in the attacking form from swansea. I think Vorm may be their only saving grace. I only have the 2 M to transfer Torres to Rooney so I wouldn't have any extra funds to change Lambert to anyone but another striker such as Pog in that price bracket. I am considering Kagawa but I am thinking I should spread the attacking coverage since I will have rooney from gw2 on. Decisions Decisions...

cerny is backup and also the most selected of the reserve keepers, so if you're gonna pick a keeper not starting he's the worst choice.

sinclair hasn't gone anywhere. assume you mean allen. 😛 they've bought de guzman too though. on paper (i stress: on paper), their team is arguably better than it was. they've just loaned out a striker too i believe, though i know nothing about him really.

Hey guys. Plan to WC in week 3. Would like some thoughts on my draft teams for week 1 and 2.

    Week 1:

    Federici
    Clichy Hughes Gunter
    Mata Hazard Kagawa Kacaniklic
    Cisse Torres Aguero

    Week 2:
    Davis
    Clichy Rafael Cuellar
    Kagawa Bale Mata Michu
    Torres Aguero Cisse

    - No point hits taken.

Week 2 team will either be Mata/Hazard based on results from first week.

Well Federici has a DGW, then Davis has Wigan at home. Not a bad option for the price I'm paying.

Agree on Rafael, he's not great, but I can't see many other options that look odds on for a week 2 cleansheet at that price.

depends, I think since he is healthy he will be fantastic especially if Liverpool signs Adam johnson or Walcott. I would wait just to be sure he has the talent around him. But for the same price you have Bale and Hazard, just a little under that is siggy. Other talent to consider that a lot of people seem to be picking up with Peinar and McClean. Kagawa may not be a bad choice either

Honestly if Liverpool get johnson, Sahin, Walcott, or Dempsey which pool is actively pursuing you can expect Gerrard to be in the assists like crazy. I doubt Rodgers will move him out of that midfield role after he's spoken so much about the connection between him and suarez. He's pretty much the face of liverpool, He can't risk not playing him.

B for me, better value in the cheap defenders meaning you could rotate Hangeland better than you could rotate the 6.5 mid. Plus Kagaw has huge potential

vidic may be eased back in after a long-term absence... if he was nailed on week after week he'd be one of the first names on my teamsheet anyday.

He's played a good bit during pre-season, plus there aren't many alternatives for United seeing as the annual centre back crisis has already begun.

Not quite sure what will happen. I think it's too soon for that watch to have some kind of explosive or anything like that in it yet.

Oh and I really hope that the cold opening in the first episode of this season isn't the finale. It'll probably be the start of the second half of this season.

I think Walt Jr will die in a car crash soon, too much emphasis on him and Walt buying the new fast cars and Junior cant drive to save his life for something not to happen. Talk to you here about new episode Monday morning kid!

PS: I think end of season 4 would have been perfect end of the series. Walt won by killing Gus and broke bad by poisoning the kid!

    Demel Tierny Cuellar Hangeland Rangel

Fonte quite possibly the most nailed on 4mil def in the game
Clyne is also fairly nailed on and provides more attacking threat,( has played wing recently and midfield)
um, honestly depends if you got figs or not
If u got a bigger pair of Figs take Nelsen from QPR 😀
but out of those 2 the bigger risk/Reward would most likely be Clyne

evra used to be arguably the best left back in the world for a while, he was the second most important player after vidic during that season where we won the league, broke the clean sheet record and got to the CL final. after the world cup he went to total shit, but i see no reason to believe that was a permanent thing, as he's been slowly but noticably improving particularly over the past year or so. i don't think he's lost it in the same way that, say, torres has. but we'll see!

Those are two REALLY good options.

Some of the best I have seen.

    Well done.

And to be more sensible... I'm still really unsure of Kagawa and also Tevez's game time and I'd hate to have 9m sitting on the bench. I've currently got Pienaar and and Petric... although I'm sure that will change over the next week!

Hazard is bothering me - not sure why... can any Chelsea fans shed light on his liklihood of playing every week?

Option that I would really appreciate advice on:

    1 - A Cole, Clichy, Hangeland
    vs
    2 - Skrtl, Lescott, Koschielny

sorry - that was meant to be:

      1 – A Cole, Clichy, Hangeland + Hazard
      vs
      2 – Skrtl, Lescott, Koschielny + Lampard/Siggurdson (I already have Bale btw)

every week? very low. most weeks? very high. he's been...simmering in pre-season, not really taken off yet. might be worth holding off for now. i prefer lamps myself.

1 beats 2 by a country mile. liverpool and arsenal have crappy fixtures.

Seems like Jussi would do you good...Should be noted that Green made some terrible errors today, but it's pre season, so might mean very little come the start of the season.

          Green and Jussi imo

I'm going with Jussi and Ruddy right now though, with 0.5 in the bank which I could potentially use for GKs
