The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

It somehow seems strange writing up a Leighton Baines Scout Report at this time of the season. Typically, we have to wait till the second half of the campaign before Everton embark on one of those resurgent runs so synonymous with the club under David Moyes but this time round, the Toffees have been quick out the blocks:

Baines, as always, has been one of the chief protagonists. With a clean sheet, assist and five Fantasy Premier League bonus points across his first three Gameweeks, the left-back’s form reflects his side’s surprise start, with Moyes’ men registering wins against United and Villa before a temporary blip at West Brom last Saturday. According to club captain Phil Neville, the Toffees’ fine form is down to a change in pre-season build-up by Moyes – whatever the reason may be, it brings Baines onto our radars ahead of a kind upcoming run of games for the Merseysiders.

Looking at the season ticker, Everton have, arguably, the strongest run of fixtures over the next couple of months, right the way through to Gameweek 13. Investment in the Toffees’ assets looks a definite tactic to consider, then, with (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) all rolling up to Goodison, while trips to the likes of Wigan, QPR and Reading all offer the potential of points.

Pricing also falls in Baines’ favour this time round. The left-back had a relatively average season by his own high standards last term, producing four goals and a couple of assists – bearing in mind he returned five goals and 11 assists in the 2010/11 campaign, it’s fair to say his attacking output took a significant dive. As a result, his starting price dropped from 8.0 last season to 7.0 in FPL, while in the Sky Sports game, his cost of 7.1 looks good value.

Already, we’ve seen Baines’ creativity supply chance after chance for his team mates – indeed, no other player in the Premier League currently matches him for goalscoring opportunities provided. With a share of corner kicks, in addition to being first in line for free-kicks and penalties, he offers far more than just clean sheet potential – with the likes of City and United failing to produce returns at the back, any highly priced defender who offers the potential of attacking returns looks all the more appealing in the current climate. If Nikica Jelavic or Marouane Fellaini can apply the finishing touches to Baines’ consistent left flank delivery, a bandwagon seems almost inevitable.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    "Bargain Baines" no longer.

I'm not sure Everton will keep up the defensive displays though.

I think it was the season before last. I got him for a few games, he done bugger all, got rid and Everton got consecutive penalties. Conspiracy.

I have a really hard time sticking with long haul players. I think Silva is the only one I kept over half the season last year, and I still felt like I kept him too long when I finally ditched him. Their fixtures at this point are hard to ignore though...

Yeah, i am keeping him for the long haul now. Still, how do they classify chances created on here? I can see him crossing in to Fellaini or Jelevic who knock it down for someone else.

That's the case with all "attacking potential" defenders though - they only really get the "big scores" a few times a season, so you really have to keep them for at least 10 games to expect to catch one (unless you are just really lucky)

But an "attacking potential" defender (like Vermaelen) who plays for the best defence in the league (Arsenal) will give you both clean sheets and goals/assists.

    Lost on old post...

    Pre-GW4 Press Conference

Interview by Alan Brazil with MJ6987 (manager of Atalanta)

Alan: Mor-ning!!!! Well, MJ, you’ve had an absolute baptism of fire in your first season in Serie A haven’t you pal?

MJ: Yeah, you could say that! When the fixtures came out I saw that I had two of the big names in the first 3 weeks – starting with Forca’s Lazio outfit and a clash with Milanista’s AC Milan in GW3, with a match against the lower profile Grounderz (Cagliari) sandwiched inbetween.

Alan: Aye, so you must be quite pleased with your start eh?

MJ: Yes, well, I was quite confident going into week one despite tough opposition, but I came up against a Forca Inter team in rampant form – my score of 75 was decent enough but braces from Petric and Michu pretty much put paid to any hopes I had of a debut victory as Forca powered his way to 93 points. I shifted through the gears in week two and over-powered relative newcomer Grounderz 79-44 despite taking a 4 point hit – although it was just a relief to get off the mark. I then continued this momentum into week 3 with a real morale boosting victory against an uncharacteristically off-form Milanista (71-58) which means that I am currently lying 4th in Serie A.

Alan: And, after some respite with the international breaks, you are straight back into the big games with another great match up against Mark (Palermo)…although from what I’ve heard on that podcast, he can be an absolute numpty, a bit of a tube sometimes?

MJ: Err, no, I think you’re thinking of his co-host maybe? Anyway, yeah, Mark was one of the “dangermen” that I picked out pre-season – I mean, his record speaks for itself with an incredible five top 5k finishes including two inside the top 500! And, although he hasn’t had the best of starts, you know with managers like that its only a matter of time before they start performing – I can only hope that it is not quite yet!

Alan: Aye, Mark’ll be getting absolute pelters from Granddad if he loses to yourself as a relative newcomer to the game?

MJ: I think its “Granville” but, although I’ve been under the radar, I’ve done OK to date…a 15k finish in my debut season, followed my my biggest achievement to date, a top 500 finish and then a more modest top 10k last year, but, no, nothing compared to what Mark has achieved so its going to be a very tough game – good luck to Mark

Alan: OK, we’ll wrap it up there – cheers pal

    MJ: Cheers Al.

Sorry to repost but was hoping for some further opinions on this :

Got a tough decision on my hands.

a)Keep Ba( just reallized he is not as good as I thought and I think Pardew could go back to having him on the wing, with the current formation not working and Cisse failing to produce with Ba next to him or get
    b) Jelavic- I am planning to get Baines in the next 2 gameweeks too so it may be too much
    c) Bent- takes penalties and is the ultimate differential, best fixtures also, but plays for Villa

Had to copy/paste, since my timing was totally BONKERS!

This is only my second season here in the FPL, and the most remarkable fact that I observed was that people here tend to consider the investment made in the backline as more of a waste. I don’t understand that how people with defenders from WHU, NOR, REA or even SOU even think that the culmulative money saved there, can provide them with extra points upfront? We are talking about reducing the value of 4-5 players at the back for upgrading just 1 or 2 frontliners.

    Come to think of it,

    I have,

    Cech Mignolet
    Gibbs BAE Lescott Skrtel McAuley

I know that I can easily downgrade Cech/BAE/Lescott and even Skrtel and get around 4.0/5.0 more in the bank but really, is it worth it? Though the big guns aren’t kepping Cleanies atm, but am sure they eventually will.

So, in a nutshell, if i play 3-4-3 and the 3 big defenders (and GK) DO manage to keep a cleansheet for their team, I may get about 15-18 points, defending on bonus etc. On the other hand, what if my defence together managed 5 points, if I downgraded each of them and the attacker which was upgraded by that money, say, scores 1 goal and 1 assist, still I am only getting a total of 13 points without considering if my ‘expensive’ defender gets on the scoresheet.

So, is the cheap defence worth it?

Yeah because although the big teams do keep more CS there isn't a huge gap between them and the cheaper lot - appears even more so this year.

Your 3(+GK) big defence won't pull in 18 points all that often. Plus you have 3 subs there more expensive than a lot of people's first choice in defence.

This is the debate for almost 5 years here. Previously we had 4 big defenders at the back and then Reeson came he won FPL with I think 40pts margin with uber cheap defense.

No, getting the right cheap defenders is important. You can get good results and points from defence but you don't need to spend big, unless a big gun shuts up shop.

      yes to a certain point
last season swansea provided some very good cheap defenders with high returns at home
other teams who have a proven history of getting CS at home are stoke and fulham
snapping up 4.0 and 4.5 starters from these teams would not make a cheap defence but a value one.
however with teams like villa norwich southampton who give no guarantees of CS whatsoever even if the are playing a conference team then this would be stupid
notice that more high hitters in mid and attack will also give u more captain option when the big teams are playin each other

I thought I'd copy and paste my reply since it took me a good 5 mins!

You make some excellent points – Lots of people point to 10+ clean sheets for a 5m defender over a season and ask what a striker who scores that would be worth.

The problem is that bonus points disproportionately favour attacking players and this, combined with their increased likelihood to get assists means that attacking players will, on average, score more. Therefore money invested in attack is more efficient. Also, having a good Captaincy option each week is essential as the points you get from your Captain are about 1/3 of this game.

However, you can over-invest in attack to the point of waste – You can only play 7 attacking players and so have the choice of having a cheap 8th or rotating with potentially wasted money on the bench.

Therefore, my philosophy is this; Get the best attacking 6 you can afford, the best 2 remaining players in terms of value/rotation, then invest the rest in as attacking a defence as you can. Players like Baines, Huth, Riise who play in decent defences but yield attacking returns can be the difference in this game. Finding the less obvious attacking defenders (e.g. Wilson of Stoke or Olsson of West Brom or Boyce of Wigan), has basically become a (slightly tragic) hobby of mine!

Which team's lineup is the hardest to predict this week? Not United... not City... Stoke. No idea how they'll use their new signings. The biggest question is how will Owen and Walters slot in, if they both do?

    My go:

    ......................Begovic
    Wilkinson Shawcross Huth Wilson
    Walters...Whelan...Adam....Kightly
    .....................Owen

IF RVP can repeat his great goal tally of 30 this year...

    He has already scored 4

It doesn't follow from the logic presented but I think he's saying that Arsenal and Everton keep significantly more clean sheets than Wigan hence their defenders are worth the punt.

Boyce is only 0.5 more than the cheapest Wigan defender (who's not even really nailed on) and for me that's a punt with very little downside.

Only 3 games in, tough not to. This season has hardly been inspiring though. Two home games yielded 1 point and then another 1 pointier and the away game (when 90% of active players would have benched him) saw Wigan pick up a clean sheet

It's why I've stopped playing home and away rotation - basing it around the fixtures now. I did the rotation calcs and saw horrible numbers of CS disappearing in that system. Even apparently reliable teams like Fulham, Stoke and Sunderland were getting lots of away clean sheets that would be lost in that system.

Yes. It's my plan too. The good thing about the timing is that your get 2 more gwks for Ivan. I'd be struggling more if I currently had Baines. gw6 sounds perfect.

I think Kos (and moreso Sagna when he returns) offers a better value way in to the 'arris defence. Like you say though if Verm starts delivering then it is easy to swap. Alternatively I could keep Ivan and do Pod>Jelly if the former doesn't deliver against Soton

I would imagine that fall in pts returns from Baines last season, would have coincided with the complete dip in form of Cahill. I don't have the stats to back this up, would be interesting to see how many assists involved Cahill, two seasons ago.

Oh, yes. Agree completely. Cahill was a monster, but he declined before last season and Everton had multiple issues in the 1st half.

Baines' scores were tied in with Cahill's, but has been increasingly moved to the other two + Jelly.

Also, Baines is now a better player and more than just one half of a partnership.

For 6.5m he is very prolific. He had a great FPL history when he returned to Everton last season and the season before he was great as well. You have to factor in Everton's poor starts, but overall he has been a very good 7.5m ish selection. The fact he is priced so low this season makes him remarkable value. Apart from Michu he is by miles the best in that price range.

Its important to look at games and read news as well as look at stats. The 10/11 season consisted of playing for Everton during their traditional poor first half of the campaign, then being bought by spurs where he was often benched.

there's more to this game than numbers. 😉
