Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 6

Everton’s exceptional form and fixtures find their assets soaring in our Watchlist reckoning this week. Mid-price defensive assets play partner to the attacking verve of Leighton Baines, while up front, our options are plentiful. Too plentiful.

Our Watchlist rankings have been updated and can be found in your sidebar. Read on for the blurb on the key movers this week…

Goalkeepers

Simon Mignolet surges clear in our goalkeeper rankings. There are several factors at play here. Firstly, there’s little doubt that Martin O’Neill has his side playing tight, controlled football – if somewhat unambitious in attacking terms. Sunderland’s fixtures are also fairly favourable, handing the back four home encounters with Wigan, Newcastle and Aston Villa in the next five. Thirdly, while the personnel in O’Neill’s back four is hard to pin down following the injury to Carlos Cuellar, Mignolet appears to offer a secure option at a decent price.

West Brom’s Ben Foster continues to offer value and is retained in second spot in our rankings. Like Sunderland, West Brom have emerged as miserly mid-price contenders and Foster should benefit from his forthcoming fixtures to offer further returns. Unlike Mignolet, however, Foster could lose out in some squads to attractive options in the back four – namely Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell.

Both Merseyside clubs have fixtures that promise defensive returns, although the duo have factors that keep Tim Howard and Jose Reina out of the top places in our rankings. Howard will surely play second fiddle to Leighton Baines in our lineups, with further slots spared for the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic. As for Reina, his defence looks set to be ravaged by injury, although home encounters with Stoke and Reading in the next three could still offer short-term benefits.

West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen takes a tumble then, with fixtures stiffening somewhat, while Stoke’s Asmir Begovic is hovering. He looks a very strong option, along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul (when fit), once Gameweek 8 has passed.

Defenders

Leighton Baines has been on top of our Watchlist rankings for three weeks and, in the past two Gameweeks, has shown just why. Early adopters have benefited from a goal and assist in consecutive games, in addition to Saturday’s clean sheet at the Liberty. With fixtures flourishing, Baines looks assured of further returns and is undisputed as the must-have defender right now.

The West Brom defence continues to offer exceptional value with a tit-for-tat battle rumbling between the options – Gareth McAuley, Liam Ridgewell and even Jonas Olsson. The superior of the three is hard to predict but it’s clear that having one of this trio for the coming weeks looks likely to be profitable.

We’re taking a punt on Liverpool’s Glen Johnson, despite injuries in Brendan Rodgers’ back four and a poor string of results. Liverpool could well turn the corner over the next three Gameweeks, however, and Johnson looks set to be in profit from clean sheets with the potential for attacking returns. He’s been a strong influence coming forward in recent weeks and could make a decent differential over the upcoming trio of fixtures.

John O’Shea is your assured option in the Sunderland back four should you neglect the Mignolet option, while Vincent Kompany continues to be a presence in the top echelons of our rankings, despite the continued struggle for clean sheets. City’s fixtures are by far the best amongst the top clubs and, with Roberto Mancini sounding determined to solve defensive lapses, we see fortunes turning for Kompany in the next month.

Stoke’s Robert Huth and Fulham’s John Arne Riise are your differentials further down the rankings. Both will rely on attacking returns in the short-term, although Huth’s fixtures will lighten considerably from Gameweek 8 onwards.

Midfielders

Having opted for Steven Pienaar ahead of Marouane Fellaini last week we are forced to backtrack and reinstate the Belgian this time around. Fellaini climbs to the pinnacle of our midfield rankings, toppling the big guns on the back of his attacking role and strong returns thus far. Fixtures remain favourable and, despite Jelavic’s return from injury, we see Fellaini remaining a factor up top as he continues to look unplayable.

We’ve taken the unprecedented step to also included Pienaar in the rankings, such is the form being shown by David Moyes’ side. The likes of Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla rank above the South African, while Eden Hazard suffers a decline as form and fixtures factor against him.

Swansea’s Michu also drops with form but has the fixtures to maintain his rank in the short-term, holding off the charge from West Ham’s Kevin Nolan who has shown consistency, even with Andy Carroll sidelined.

Lower down the rankings, both Raheem Sterling and Alex Kacaniklic offer value differentials for the coming weeks. Sterling, in particular, looks a great route to Liverpool’s next three fixtures.

Forwards

Our established heavy-hitting top two come under real threat as a result of recent rotation, with Carlos Tevez suffering a drop, allowing both Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert to climb above him in our reckoning. To be fair, all three have very strong fixtures to come, although the rotation doubt hanging over Tevez is a concern. Berbatov and Lambert look assured of starts, will be on spot-kicks and have the fixture to flourish for many weeks.

Tevez is still the cover option of choice within the City ranks, although tonight’s start in the Capital One Cup gives further cause for concern. Sergio Aguero could well threaten to replace him in the Watchlist from next weekend, while Yaya Toure continues to offer the only viable option in midfield while David Silva recovers his sharpness and Samir Nasri remains sidelined. City are a potential problem for Fantasy managers right now – excellent fixtures but with instability and uncertainty throughout the lineup.

Back to the rankings and Robin Van Persie is struggling to hold his top spot, particularly with United facing stiff opposition in the coming weeks. We’re banking on the Dutchman to retain his starts and continue to deliver goals, having notched five already in United colours.

There are great options lower down, too. Nikica Jelavic is only kept from our top three by the fact that there are such strong midfield options offering good Everton cover. Jermain Defoe’s form has him hold strong, while Demba Ba has also demonstrated consistent returns to offer another mid-price option. With Steven Fletcher also chipping in with four strikes from as many shots on goal, it’s clear that we’re currently spoilt for choice in this area of our squads. Configuring the right trio looks both vital and decidedly tricky.

Finally, we’re backing Luis Suarez to finally break out and offer yet another alternative over the next month. He travels to Carrow Road this weekend, the scene of a hat-trick last term, which included a spectacular 50-yard effort. The omens are good for Suarez, then, before Stoke and Reading turn up at Anfield in Gameweeks 7 and 8.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seems most teams are taking the rumbelows cup pretty seriously this year. What gives? I was hoping we might actually win this one if everyone else plays their kids!!

Use my transfer or save it? (1 free transfer, 4.0m in the BANK):

    Begovic(SWA)
    Baines(SOT) Rafael(TOT) Jenkinson(CHE)
    Cazorla(CHE) Fellaini(SOT) Michu(sto) Sterling(nor)
    Van Persie(TOT) Berbatov(MCI) Tevez(ful)

subs - Foster, Cuellar, Demel, Maloney

    a) Jenkinson > G.Johnson
    b) Cuellar > G.Johnson
    c) Tevez > Aguero
    d) Tevez > Suarez
    e) Do nothing and save a transfer

My defence is going to look a bit of a shambles next week. After Baines(wig) i'm left with Rafael(new), Demel(ARS), Cuellar(mci) & Jenkinson(whu) and the last 2 may not even make the starting XI's. Makes me want to get Johnson who has STK & RDG after this GW... although perhaps that transfer can wait a week. See who actually lines up for Liverpool first and how they get on at Norwich.

So you're relatively confident that 'Pool can cope/keep CSs with Kelly out and possibly Agger?

Their defense was 'meh' to begin with, now ...

With a team as solid as yours, I'd likely sit tight. Two frees is an awesome place to be.

I'm not that confident at all after Kelly and Agger went down although it would be tough to pick three better goal shy opponents than - nor STK RDG.

Two free's is a good position. Would be nice to have the Tevez situation cleared up but i suppose that will have to wait till Friday. No rush anyway, i won't be doing anything (if anything!) until Friday/Saturday.

I would avoid GJohnson atm. He looks great going forward but we will struggle for CS with Agger out, even if it is a kind run of fixtures.
Tevez to Aguero is tempting but I think Aguero might be a decent TF for GW7 not GW6.

I really think Suarez is the way to go, I have him in since last week. Liverpool get ridiculed on here and I have to grin and bare it but there are real signs of improvement. The Arsenal match was the only complete fail. I predict 5 or 6 goals in the next three fixtures and Suarez is the main focal point of the attacking play.

Someone will now post "Lolerpool" etc. etc. or some witty remark about hitting the woodwork.

Hey, hey, hey ... 'Pool have been so underwhelming, I've been restraining my ridicule! 😉

But I'd agree that Suarez might be a dark horse forward with the run of fixtures they have ... I've considered Gerrard, myself. Quality goal on Sunday. Would you say he's not a great option? [I've only seen the Utd match this season, so not sure where he's playing]

Playing department in open play - I had him GW1-2 and watched. Lots of long balls, main points threat is crosses from both open play and set pieces, as well as obviously long shots and free kicks. United goal was scored unusually far forward for him, he may have taken up more offensive duties after Shelvey dismissal. Jury out of course on whether he's there to stay.

It was an interesting ride but I've hopped off

But given that already have Sterling as some sort of Liverpool attacking cover i'm tempted to improve me defence. Nothing "stopped" them, but where you have a talented strike force in Balotelli/Dzeko/Tevez/Aguero, it makes sense to preserve the energy of your players, make sure they are available to you when you really need them.

Have you never played Manager mode in FIFA!?

Tevez is the Argentinian Rooney: in style of play, importance to their team, and durability.

I think Mancini would be a silly-billy not to play him.

Agreed, but that'll inevitably mean Tevez will start in all the tougher fixtures, while Dzeko/Balotelli get their chance against easier opposition (assuming Aguero is nailed on).

I largely agree and that's a risk you need to assume when owning him. But I'm wondering if - right now - Mancini sees any fixture as 'easier' until they have a two-goal lead ...

Are we assuming the reported Balo-Mankini bust-up was just an Italian handshake, nothing more?

Not heard about that.. interesting if so. Although, Balotelli can seem to do no wrong in the eyes of Mancini in the past.

It's the price factor really when mid-priced options have fixtures and form. Freeing up 2m means a big hitter like Silva is easier to accommodate (should he return to form).

"After the final whistle, Balotelli was pushed down the tunnel by City manager Mancini after shouting in his direction as he left the field - presumably discussing why he'd played just the final six minutes of the game.

"I don't know what happened. I don't know if he asked me something, but it's not important," said Italian boss Mancini.

"Mario probably thinks it was important. Tomorrow I will ask him, next time I see him."

This description of events, if anywhere near accurate, actually makes me like Mancini more ... it suggests he has good man-management skills.

Two Italians, heat of the moment, frustration felt by both ... but the one is older and wiser and sees the young hothead doing what they do, spouting off. Wiser man pushes Pissy man down the tunnel before he can make the situation worse, "I'll talk to him tomorrow, when he's cooled down."

The start and goal suggest it may have been the best way to manage young angry man.

Could also be the case that he knows the Italian temperament (remember Di Canio?). But you're right - in either case, it is good man management.

maybe you are right regarding roon. when i saw him play a more withdrawn role i was amazed at his passing expertise. the england- argentina comparison though weren't so much football-centric. more to do with how argentina don't travel halfway round the world to rob some worthless island off of good folk in the ass-end of nowhere. there might be some kinda socio-political commentary implied therein. but if so, i'm too drunk to notice

Now hear me out. I'm still hoping that Dave's form will improve in time for our nice run of fixtures (from GW9) and i'm on a WC, so i'm thinking of putting a place sitter in for him until then. The best option for a similar price.....................maybe..............possibly,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Suarez? (runs for cover!!). I know, I know, but he has nor, STK.,RDG in the games I am looking to cover, then plan on getting him out anyway, so the most he can fail for is 3 games. Crazy?

I would generally agree, and will probably fold before Saturday, but I think now is a good time to get rid of Tevez anyway, and if he is rested at the weekend, what better way than to get some instant returns on the 4 points.

That presupposes that Suarez can actually hit the target and Liverpool will not stutter away to Norwich. Which is a lot to presuppose!

Ok, so the counter argument is that often last year, one of Citeh's substitute strikers would come off the bench to grab a brace. This could be Tevez in a number of games.

However, with Silva not 100% (widely reported) and Nasri injured, I think Citeh may struggle a little to be free scoring.

I'll climb out of your head now and go to sleep 😀

I believed Tevez will start this weekend until he played 120 minutes yesterday.. 🙁
Anyway, the lost might push Mancini to gain momentum back and he might need his best team on weekend which Carlos should be part of it. Still keep my hope with Sterling first sub.

What do you think about Chelsea substitution, Torres > Hazard last night?
Is it a good news for Hazard owners that he's considered in very attacking position or bad news that he might lose his place in MF? Btw, From report, Mata seems everywhere in Chelsea scoring moments.

Swan DF still leaky? Not sure if I can keep my faith on Rangel.. 🙁

Genuinely considering Tevez > Suarez for the 3 upcoming fixtures. The attacking play is promising, I feel Pool are actually due a big score (in the proper, "they have been unlucky not to score more" way not the "they must score lots because they haven't so far")

This would only be the 2nd time ever I'd have owned him BTW.

The only thing putting me off is the stubborn Norwich defence. Excluding a perhaps anomalous thrashing in opening day, they have conceded 1 to QPR, 1 at Spurs, 0 to West Ham and 1 at Newcastle.

They are not defensive pushovers anymore and mentally I don't see them as an attractive team on the ticker.

    Jelavic against Southampton perhaps?

I had Suarez for a period last year when they had nice fixs and a better team, very irradiating fpl player(always looks dangerous, plays well but fails to score hitting posts/keepers etc)
I think its too risky to get him as he will not go on a scoring run and liverpool dont have enough creative abilty.

Im still a little uncertain about Suarez, if he really can step up and be that 20-odd goal striker we need. Certainly he has the ability, proven international scorer, but we`ll see. Im hopeful, to say the least.

Well yeah, they are pretty good. With Cavani/Forlan around defenders have to focus on someone else as well. That said, he might turn the corner. He gets into so many positions and creates so much, that im sure eventually hes going to bang them in. Rememer, keepers have made some great saves on his shots as well as him delivering sloppy finishes. Now that he`s finally on FK`s as well, im hoping for 15-20 this year.

I agree.. it's the creativity aspect that is stopping me. Norwich away will be a perfect indication of whether Liverpool will pick up with kinder fixtures, without going tits and putting 3 or 4 past Norwich.

A wait and see, for me.

Those 4 teams haven't exactly been offensive juggernauts, though, have they?

The story of that game will be written by 'Pool's defense, imo. Hold tight long enough to score and 'Pool walks the game.

Spurs and Newcastle away should in theory be some of the most testing defensive fixtures on the calendar, but maintained their stubborn 1 goal or below run. Particularly given Hughton's history for defensive solidity with Birmingham etc, I think this stubbornness is a definite trait to persist. The 5-0 has been and gone - much better teams have lost by more..

Yeah, i think Hughton has tightened up shop. He`s a known defensively strong manager, so im thinking lots of teams will struggle to put tons of balls in vs them. That said, they are pretty bad so it obviously can happen. They were pretty fortunate to only concede 1 at Newcastle, and i didnt watch the Spurs game, but Spurs havent exactly been banging them in thus far, Reading game apart.

Yeah, it comes down to "will pool score?" and the answer is "probably" which isn't really enough for me. 2 or 3 goals is what I'd hope for from the team to get a decent return from Suarez (perhaps 1 goal 1 assist from that?). Looks an outside bet.

I do think people are just reading the name "Norwich" without considering the actual strength of their defence, TBH. If you ranked defensive form right now they would be pretty high. It's backed up by the stats as well, for example the recent FFS article on shots in the box conceded - I believe Norwich conceded the least in the league.

Yeah, im with you. But all that aside, its still Norwich. Not saying that i think Liverpool will score 3-4-5, but i certainly wouldnt put it past someone to get in Suarez for this game, if you need a striker for your team.

Hmmm ok this is making me more confident about Suarez. Bassong and Barnett were building a nice partnership at CB, maybe it's all different with a new one. Leaning towards Suarez now.

He`s not that bad? Was one of Hull`s best players and captained Sunderland last year. Proven Premier League defender. Tbh i`d rather have him than Bassong. Besides, its more about the organisation than the actual players, Hughton runs a pretty tight ship.

Precisely, and don't you think one of the things that helps foster that organistaion and spirit in the team is consistency? And partnerships all over the field? As Isacki points out above Barnett and Bassong were building a decent partnership so i can't see how Turner coming in will help.

I think it was Anichebe that won the header from a Pienaar freekick, cant recall 100%. He was fine, had a few long range efforts and played pretty high up. Missing Baines and Pienaar affects him, clearly. He needs supply and those two are the main points for Everton.

Pondering a triple transfer (for a 4pt hit):

    Jaaskelainen | Begovic
Gibbs | Baines | Barnett | Demel (Davies)
Michu | Cazorla | Hazard | Pienaar (Maloney)
    Tevez | RVP (Graham)

    Hazard > Fellaini

    Graham > Fletcher

Mhh..reall feel like using WC. Just to many problems/injuries/rotation

    Mign Fed
Cole Mc Auley Williams McCartney Cuellar
Hazard Noble Guthrie Fellaini (used transfer on him)
    RvP Tevez Bent

I have been bandwagoning Hazard and gut screwed, picked the wrong WHU players + Bent (who did at least get some points in his last two matches. Maybe try something very different, loose, well almost everyone RvP, Hazard ect, maybe Tevez (arghhh to rotation) and go for a team without the stars but whom you know will play:)

Really tough to settle on my WC strikeforce. I could go with a number of different options and it's really causing me a bit of a headache. I'd like to keep Fletcher and Ba for at least one week but I'm likely to swap one of them for Berbatov soon.

    A) Tevez Fletcher Ba (as it is now)
    B) Aguero Fletcher Ba
    C) RVP Fletcher Ba
    D) RVP Tevez 1 of Ba/Fletcher

Fletcher (WIG) and Ba (rdg) look too appealing this week. Unfortunately they both run into Manchester sides the week after. I already had Ba going into the WC so reluctant to drop him even though I have HBA too.

    Any help you could offer?

Just had a quick go on the season ticker; sorted by attacking difficulty, from GW 8 to GW 18 Chelsea are bottom and Swansea are 2nd bottom, the top 5 is ARS, NEW, SOT, LIV, STO. West Ham have the worst defensive fixtures over that period.

With that in mind, I think next few transfers will be:

    Michu -> Gervinho
    Hazard -> HBA
    and with the extra cash
    Maloney -> Walters
    Demel -> Vermaelen

so by GW 10 my squad would be:

    Begovic - Foster

    Staylor - Hughes - Vermaelen - Baines - Nelsen

    Pienaar - HBA - Walters - Cazorla - Gervinho

    Lambert - Berbatov - RVP

Too dependent on Arsenal? Would you trust the season ticker that much? Is it pointless planning that far ahead?
