Scout Scribbles – Capital One Cup Third Round

Carlos Tevez plays 120 minutes as City suffer a shock home defeat at the hands of Villa. Juan Mata pulls the strings as Chelsea hammer Wolves. Michu is amongst the goals as Swansea scrape past Crawley, while Mauro Boselli bags a brace for Wigan in a 4-1 hammering of West Ham. Here’s the lowdown on last night’s Capital One Cup matches…

Manchester City 2 Aston Villa 4
The main point of note was that Carlos Tevez played 120 minutes, after Villa took City to extra-time before clinching an unexpected victory. With Mario Balotelli also playing from start to finish and Edin Dzeko afforded 46 minutes, Sergio Aguero looks in the driving seat as Roberto Mancini assesses his forward options for Saturday’s trip to Fulham. The likes of Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry and James Milner all started in a strong looking lineup for City but the hosts’ defensive display continue to be a real worry for Mancini…

“Conceding goals is a real problem, we need to work with our defenders because we aren’t defending well at the moment.”

Dimitar Berbatov’s Fantasy owners will be a little more confident after last night’s disaster, with City rolling up to the Cottage this weekend. Balotelli and Alex Kolarov were the ones who grabbed the goals for City last night.

Paul Lambert benched Darren Bent for the Etihad clash and handed Gabby Agbonlahor a chance to impress up top. The forward bagged a brace for Villa, while Charles N’Zogbia staked a claim for a regular role with a goal. Lambert also welcomed back Marc Albrighton from injury; the midfielder provided the assist for his side’s fourth, and Joe Bennett was handed his first start at left-back since joining in the summer.

Chelsea 6 Wolves 0
Roberto Di Matteo handed new right-back Cesar Azpilicueta his first start for the visit of Wolves. With Ryan Bertrand fielded at left-back, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole were given the night off ahead of the trip to Arsenal. Victor Moses and Lucas Piazon were also part of the first XI, lining up alongside Juan Mata in the attacking midfield three behind Fernando Torres. Mata continued where he left off against Stoke, having supplied the assist for the defender’s winner on Saturday – the Spaniard produced a goal and two assists in the rout, while Torres and Moses both chipped in with a goal and assist apiece. Bertrand and Gary Cahill were also amongst the goals, while Marko Marin returned from a hamstring injury, climbing off the bench to replace Mata late on.

Assistant boss, Eddie Newton, had this to say on Torres…

“Fernando is positive. We talk to all our players and he is very positive. He is feeling a lot sharper, the goals will come. We all believe that. You can’t expect a sudden flood of goals, we want consistency over the season and we feel he will get that.”

Torres would seem likely to start at the Emirates with Newton also confirming that Daniel Sturridge remains 50:50 for the Emirates, while Frank Lampard’s fitness is also a concern.

Leeds 2 Everton 1
Leighton Baines was given the night off for the trip to Elland Road, though Marouane Fellaini was handed the full 90 minutes as the Toffees lost 2-1. Steven Pienaar came on as a sub at the break, while Nikica Jelavic was tentatively eased back into action with a 25 minute appearance from the bench towards the end of the match. Kevin Mirallas and Victor Anichebe kept their places after both scored at the weekend, though it was Sylvain Distin who grabbed the Merseysiders’ goal last night, with Anichebe providing the assist.

Crawley 2 Swansea 3
Michael Laudrup kept Michu and Wayne Routledge in the starting XI. Nathan Dyer served his one-match suspension, while Danny Graham to the bench as Luke Moore led the line. Routledge provided a pair of assist as the Welsh club came from behind to register a win – Michu notched the opener and Graham came on as a second-half sub to also grab a goal for the visitors. Garry Monk, returning from a prolonged back injury, earned Swansea’s winner. Monk started the match alongside new signing Ki in central defence as the Swans’ resources were stretched at the back.

Laudrup was without new winger Pablo Hernandez – he remains a concern for the weekend trip to Stoke with a knee injury sustained against Everton…

“I’m hoping he will be fit…We’ll have a look tomorrow, but it is important that everyone is 100 per cent fit.”

MK Dons 0 Sunderland 2
Craig Gardner and James McClean were the goalscorers as the Black Cats eased into the next round. Martin O’Neill named a strong starting line-up but saw his side reduced to 10 men after Lee Cattermole was dismissed; he will now serve a three-match ban. Steven Fletcher was given the night off as Louis Saha led the line and Adam Johnson returned from injury by climbing off the bench with five minutes remaining. Martin O’Neill had this to say on Johnson’s return…

“I brought Adam on to give him a few minutes on the pitch. The second goal helped make my mind up about that. I wanted to bring him on and make him feel involved again. We’ll see how he is after that cameo and try and get him fit and ready for Saturday.”

Notably, John O’Shea missed the match through injury, although he is expected to be fit for the weekend meeting with Wigan. That forced O’Neill to star Mat Kilgallon and David Meyler as centre backs.

Southampton 2 Sheffield Wednesday 0
Nigel Adkins chose mainly to give his fringe players a run out in last night’s win. Jos Hooiveld returned from a calf problem that saw forced him off early in the Gameweek 4 visit to Arsenal, while Paulo Gazzaniga kept his place in goal, having dislodged Kelvin Davies for last weekend’s game with Villa. The likes of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez were all rested, affording Jay Rodriguez the chance to steal the headlines with a brace.

West Ham 1 Wigan 4
Sam Allardyce changed his back-four and keeper for the visit of Wigan. As a result, there was little of the defensive resilience that has seen the Hammers concede just one goal in their first three Upton Park fixtures as the Latics put four past the London outfit. Although Kevin Nolan was rested, Allardyce still started with the likes of Mark Noble, Matt Jarvis and Ricardo Vaz Te, while summer signing Modibo Maiga grabbed his side’s consolation. Judging by Allardyce’s post-match comments, few of last night’s lineup boosted their first team credentials…

“We made nine changes because I want to see what I’ve got and because a lot of players want to show my what they’ve got but in the end only the younger ones came out with any credit. So did Maiga of course with his goal because I thought it was an excellent strike. The rest of the lads were way below.”

Shaun Maloney, Emmerson Boyce and Arouna Kone were omitted from the Wigan first XI last night, though it was a strong-looking side that made its way to Upton Park. Roberto Martinez handed Mauro Boselli the chance to lead the line and the forward delivered a brace in the 4-1 win. James McArthur provided a pair of assist, while Ryo Miyaichi – handed the 90 minutes – also picked up an assist. Roberto Martinez reserved special praise for Boselli in his post-match comments

“You then have individual performances of a high quality, including Mauro Boselli who deserved his goals and took them very well. That was really important for him because he’s a goalscorer and I’ve said from the beginning of the season that he looks sharp, is very focused and a player of that stature is going to be very important to us this season.”

Don't know what to do yet again. Want Jelavic and I'm happy to ditch Tevez. Also need to ditch Jarvis (eurgh) and I'm happy to take a -4 to replace him. Would like HBA but he's out of price range and I'm not crazy about triple Everton.

    Any suggestions people? Currently have:

    Al-Habsi
    Baines Wilson Demel
    Bale Hazard Ramirez Sterling
    RVP Tevez Berba

My Masterplan (should i choose to loose Tevez which i am not sure on yet)

This GW > Tevez to Suarez for (now, STK, RDG)
After Hazard has played Norwich in GW7, Hazard > Ben Arfa (Great run of fixtures, frees up cash)
GW9 - Suarez > Aguero for his run of 3 home games in 4.

I do not think that Tevez will be benched... Mancini will be under pressure after the loss to Villa and will obviously play his best team against Fulham as he will know that Fulham are strong at home.

Aguero may be fit but how much confidence that Mancini have that he will score a lot of goals immediately... Tevez has been their best player and I am pretty confident he will start... Even if he doesn't start, he will surely come off the bench when Man City start struggling and score some goals...

In short, I am going to keep him for this GW...

As I said earlier, at the moment I believe the CL game against Dortmund is more important. Lose that (and Real beat Ajax) and City are not too far off being out of the CL already.

Dzeko & Aguero for Fulham, Tevez & Aguero for Dortmund is my prediction.

I hope Tevez plays against Fulham... Have already taken a hit to get in Baines and Felliani to beat the price rises and get in Everton coverage... Now if I have to drop Tevez also, it will be a 8 point hit which I do not want to take...

Also my team is relatively good so do not want to use my WC...

It's got Dzeko and Aguero written all over it really, doesn't it? I'm loathe to take a hit on Graham with no funds so I think I have to get rid tbh. Playing 3-5-2 I need my 2 playing.

Exactly that last bit...."Even if he doesn’t start, he will surely come off the bench when Man City start struggling and score some goals…" that wants me to sell him for Berba(who I want next week anyway)

I have Clyne (EVE) Kaca and Hangeland (MCI) on my bench at the moment...

If I dont take another hit to get out Tevez, who do you think I should play from the above 3 in place of Tevez...

Well if you keep Tevez then you obviously put him in your starting line up.

I'd say put Hange first sub and hope for the best.

Can I get a little bit of advice guys, go easy okay?

        Begovic (Foster)
        Rafael Gibbs Baines (Demel)(Clyne)
        Fellaini Cazorla HBA Sterling (Puncheon)
        RVP Jelavi(C) Berbatov

Have 2.9 left over was thinking of just upgrading Fellaini to Bale the week after? Going to ignore City till they show some form.

Would rather get Aguero for Jelavic than Bale for Fellaini the week after if funds allow.

Looks good though, I'll be captaining RVP but can see the rationale in the Jelavic pick.

I'm going Aguero over RVP, but its an easy downgrade, which sets me thinking.....

Yeah, looks good to me. Not convinced that Fellani's going to keep it up. He's only played as 2nd striekr in GW1 and 5, and both times had twice as many shots as in GWs2-4. He was still having a lot of shots in those games, but he misses so many I'm not sur that it matters. As an alternative, have you considered Pienaar for the longer term and selling Jelavich for Defoe next week?

I'd rather have Fellaini over Pienaar right now. Not sure about Defoe, just feel as soon as I put him in Adebayor will start 😕

As someone says below, its all very well worrying about Aguero being rotated for Tevez / Balloteli / Dzeko, but for just 1.5 m more you can worry about RVP being rotated for Rooney / Hernandez / Welbeck!

I thought Aguero looked very dangerous on MOTD on Sunday.

          WILDCARD this lot?

          Foster – Henderson
          Baines – Ivanovic – Demel – Hughes – Cuellar
          Kagawa – Bale – Dyer – Johnson – Noble
          Graham – Tevez – RVP

I did Zabs -> Baines to beat the prices earlier this week, so no FT. £0.5m in the bank.

I can field a fairly competitive team this week, and next (subject to Tevez’s becnh situation etc..), so can I hold off and sort it out over a couple of weeks or with a couple of -4 hits, or should I press the red button and go for it?

I would lose Kagawa, Dyer and Johnson... Get in two of Barfa/Yaya/Pienaar/Felliani/Michu/Hazard and maybe a lesser price option like Larsson/Sterling

I'll take a bit of advice if there's any going:

          Begovic

          Harte, Clark, Baines

          Cazorla, Ben Arfa, Hazard, Michu

          RVP, Lambert, Tevez

Subs: Jaask, Guthrie, S Taylor, Demel.

2 FT £0.5m in the bank.

          - I'd imagine people will say ditch Harte - I don't mind S Taylor coming in if he doesn't play though.

          - Currently entertaining Gerrard, Suarez, Fellaini, Ba, Jelavic among others. Happy to use 1 or 2 transfers.

Cheers in advance for any feedback.

Yeah, certainly something I've considered. Makes sense on a lot of levels, coupled with Tevez --> Suarez perhaps... I suppose it boils down to whether or not I think Fellaini outscores Michu in the next 3 GWs because that's when I'd then get rid of Michu anyway.

I would avoid Liverpool at the moment, even with improved fixtures. Suarez finishing still nowhere near as good as it should be with the amount of opportunities he has. Bale is worth a chance if you can get him in somehow imo

I don't think this debate is about whether he could play - sure he could. The guys an animal. More of whether Mancini will save him for CL considering Aguero is nailed on to play vs. Fulham.

I dont think Aguero is nailed on at all against fullham. He can easily start on the bench and come on for a cameo, if city are winning or if hes needed if city are faltering. Mancini knows he can they can beat fullham easily without kun. But more than likely he will start but in no means nailed on.

Beat Fulham easily at Craven Cottage? They drew 2-2 there last season with a full strength side. Aguero also needs minutes to gt back to his best.

5% or Insider Ownership tells us how many outstanding shares of stock are held by insiders or individuals and institutions that own 5% or more of the total number of outstanding shares. A five percent stake in any large company is significant, and most companies don't have such large shareholders.

I wonder how many times, this question will get asked in the next 72 hours?

Both unanswerable but my gut feeling is Agurez and far too many times....

In my opinion, as long as City are in the Champs League there is a probability both will be rotated regularly. Aguero will start this weekend but who says he`ll start next weekend after playing champs league.

I swapped Tevez for Aguero this morning for a 4 point hit. I think City will come out all guns blazing against Fulham, Aguero seems to be the most nailed on now and is a pretty good differential?

I hope it works out. He probably is the most nailed on for this weekend and as he is arguably the best frontman at City he will play most of the big games.

The problem I have is he`s most likely to be rested for easy home games which are the games you really want him for. Just my take on it though. Could be wrong.

So, you bought Tevez at 9.0, you sell at 9.4, what price do you think realistically he goes to if he doesn't play this weekend? I reckon he can drop to 9.7 easily before the GW7 deadline.

Am I right that each £0.1m drop that Tevez could incur would mean 10% of FPL players transferring him out? So, with a current ownership of around 1 million, to drop £0.3m, around 271k of FPL players would have to sell??

I know it's probably been asked to death since last night, but is there any chance of Tevez starting this weekend?

I'd rather keep him, and would need to take a hit to get rid, but keeping a player that isn't playing who can be sold for 9.4 million seems stupid..

                  What is the general concensus?

Most people agree he is on the bench, especially with Europe the week after as well. Also, there are a lot of good strikers with great fixtures and form out there for a lower price. And then there is the Agüero factor, most people on here only got Tevez as an alternative to Agü in the first place - so now that he is back...

Unless Mancini comes out on Friday and confirms that he'll start (that would be nice but seems highly unlikely!) i will be selling i think. Probably for Aguero/Suarez although i have a free transfer so it's a more straightforward decision. Not sure i'd want to take a hit. Who would be first on your bench?
