Injuries

International Week – The Withdrawals

As always, the midweek raft of international matches has harvested plenty of withdrawals ahead of next weekend’s Fantasy deadline. In general, these do tend to be no more than cautionary measures by clubs and while there’s no real reason to be overly anxious, we thought it’d be worthwhile to roll out an update on those currently affected…

Undoubtedly, the most high profile name affected is Robin Van Persie. The United forward has apparently picked up a “minorthigh problem and has been omitted from Holland’s friendly clash with Germany on Wednesday. At this stage, it’s fair to say that we’d fully expect Van Persie to be available for United’s trip to Norwich – in many ways, his withdrawal is good news given his past experience on international duty.

Van Persie’s Old Trafford team mate Wayne Rooney is also afforded the midweek off. He has withdrawn from the England squad to face Sweden with the ankle injury which forced him off at Villa on Saturday evening. Theo Walcott has pulled out as a result of the glute injury sustained in Saturday’s draw with Fulham, while ahead of next weekend’s north London derby at the Emirates, Spurs pair Aaron Lennon and Kyle Walker are also unavailable for Roy Hodgson. Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey has withdrawn after failing to recover from the thigh injury which forced him out of Sunday’s draw at Chelsea, while Anfield team mate Steven Gerrard is to have a precautionary scan after picking up a knee problem at the Bridge. The latest from the FA this evening indicates that Gerrard will be fit to win his 100th cap, however.

Demba Ba has this afternoon withdrawn from the Senegal squad to face Niger on Wednesday. Although the forward seemed to have no problems in yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham and played the full 90 minutes, Alan Pardew revealed post-match that Ba was “struggling a little bit” with his recent shin complaint. Sammy Ameobi is another Newcastle man out of midweek action. He missed yesterday’s defeat to West Ham with a hamstring injury and has pulled out of contention for the England U21s.

City’s Gael Clichy has also made his excuses ahead of France’s game with Italy. The left-back picked up a back problem in yesterday’s win over Spurs. He is due to have painkilling injections on the injury this week according to City’s assistant David Platt.

Earlier this evening, QPR’s Ryan Nelsen became the latest “casualty” – he misses out on a lengthy flight to China for New Zealand’s friendly due to ankle and knee injuries according to the club.

Scotland have been hammered by a number of call-offs ahead of their trip to Luxembourg, with as many as seven Premier League players all handing in sick notes so far. Sunderland pair Phil Bardsley and Steven Fletcher have pulled out – the former missed the weekend trip to Everton with a hamstring injury, while Fletcher was replaced on 69 minutes at Goodison after sustaining an ankle problem.

Wigan’s Shaun Maloney has picked up an abdominal problem, while Charlie Adam and James Morrison – who both scored for Stoke and West Brom respectively last Saturday – have been ruled out with groin injuries. Villa’s Barry Bannan (knee) and QPR’s Jamie Mackie (ankle) are also ruled out for their country.

Northern Ireland are without the services of Jonny Evans, after the United centre-half withdrew with the groin injury which forced him out of the weekend win at Villa, while Everton’s Kevin Mirallas is out with a hamstring problem sustained midway through the first-half of Saturday’s win over Sunderland.

This leaves us fretting on those who will be active participants in the midweek matches with the Spaniards – Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla perhaps key concerns given that they face a lengthy trip to Panama for their friendly. Meanwhile, Luis Suarez will likely turn out for Uruguay in Poland, while Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Franco Di Santo (no really), all travel with Argentina to Saudi Arabia for their friendly; Carlos Tevez remains at home once again. There’s a whole host of Belgian stars making the trip to Romania, with Eden Hazard and Marouane Fellaini the headline acts in that one from a Fantasy perspective. It’s going to be a nervous few days.

As always, we’re recording all the knocks and scrapes over in the injuries and bans table and this will include any injuries that occur over the midweek matches. Then, later this week, we’ll be working through to clear them out as the latest team news arrives prior to the weekend.

well, i suppose im a little annoyed that he did so well that he is getting too popular. On pens, jol said that if Petric plays, he is the penalty taker altho thats a big if! Value-wise is ok but im tipping Fletcher for a resurgence after next week so gonna put him in building up to Sunderland double header in gw16..

Starting to take this game v serious now Im into top 2 K and Have a major headache what to do this week. Had 0 in bank until I did Jenkinson - Gorkss. Now have 0.7 in bank, no FT. Tevez selling value is 9.4 and will remain that when he drops 0.1, Cazorla selling value 9.2 and looks as though he will drop 0.1 this week. Had intentions of doing Tevez to Suarez next week and Caz to Silva possibly the week after if Silva still looks like he's getting back to form. Doesn't look however that both moves will be possible with the price changes. Quick vote please (full team is linked)

    1. Do nothing and take no hit
    2. Just do Tevez to Suarez and hope Caz will only drop 0.1 and Silva won't rise
    3. Just do Caz to Silva and hope that 0.6 m will be enough to upgrade Tevez to Suarez (Tevez mustn't drop below 9.4 as it looks Suarez will be at least 10.0 by next gameweek and v possibly 10.1)
    4. Do both now for 8pt and get it over and done with

If I was in top 2k, I wouldn't like to be taking the 2 point hit. I see your reasons for it, but with Aguero away midweek and Tevez likely to start against AV where there will be goals it's hard to justify it. Personally, I'd hold and if it transpires that you can't do both transfers, do be it. There's more than one way to skin a cat!

no such thing. Tevez is not nailed on. Aguero, Yaya, Kompany, Hart those guys are nailed on. I say Aguero because he saves him for the games he wants him in. Once champions league is over Aguero is the only forward nailed on.

you could do Caz -> Theo or someone else to free up a lot of funds and then not be sweating the move

if your heart and mind is set on those transfers and you can afford them now, i would do it. the hit will pay off easily if your predictions are correct about silva. if you are wrong though you might be paying for it for a while.

you do have quite a heavy mid field though.

It only takes one of them to change the perceived trajectory for you to have the money. If Cazorla or Tevez does anything or Suarez and Silva have a silent game it stops the momentum and you have the money. 8 point hit seems kind of harsh for you to take considering how many spots it may cost you. I brought in Suarez and Silva and had plenty of cash to get them next week. Had to have them now. I am about 60 points behind you and like 30,000 something an 8 point hit will probably cost you dearly.

It's not weak if it's bringing in points, which it is doing.

In terms of price it is though, yes. There is one cheap midfielder, three mid-priced and one high-priced. I try to find the balance of 2-1-2 or 2-2-1, but there's no right way to play the game; only wrong ways.

      This isn't one of them.

not weak..Altho i would say Nolan/Fellaini/Mata have peaked in that they will get more points but not at the rate they have been getting them this last month.. Still a very strong midfield..I think its good to keep one player who hasnt shone yet but you think might be the next bandwagon. I for example have gone for Valencia.. Someone else might go for Silva/Walcott etc..

I think neither will get a CS and Fulham/Newcastle both have a reasonable change of a CS.

Sunderland are away to Fulham, who I believe are now the second top scorers in the league. QPR are pants and Southampton are also attacking.

Hughes is at home to a toothless Sunderland. Newcastle at home to Swansea who are struggling.

Ben Arfa dropping tonight- going to upgrade him to Tony Valencia.
This enables Tev to Suarez (just).

Is it worth doing the Suarez transfer or missing out on him and avoiding the -4?

Ji-sung Park likely to miss QPR's clash with Southampton but Dyer "hopefully an option"
