Injuries

International Week – The Withdrawals

As always, the midweek raft of international matches has harvested plenty of withdrawals ahead of next weekend’s Fantasy deadline. In general, these do tend to be no more than cautionary measures by clubs and while there’s no real reason to be overly anxious, we thought it’d be worthwhile to roll out an update on those currently affected…

Undoubtedly, the most high profile name affected is Robin Van Persie. The United forward has apparently picked up a “minorthigh problem and has been omitted from Holland’s friendly clash with Germany on Wednesday. At this stage, it’s fair to say that we’d fully expect Van Persie to be available for United’s trip to Norwich – in many ways, his withdrawal is good news given his past experience on international duty.

Van Persie’s Old Trafford team mate Wayne Rooney is also afforded the midweek off. He has withdrawn from the England squad to face Sweden with the ankle injury which forced him off at Villa on Saturday evening. Theo Walcott has pulled out as a result of the glute injury sustained in Saturday’s draw with Fulham, while ahead of next weekend’s north London derby at the Emirates, Spurs pair Aaron Lennon and Kyle Walker are also unavailable for Roy Hodgson. Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey has withdrawn after failing to recover from the thigh injury which forced him out of Sunday’s draw at Chelsea, while Anfield team mate Steven Gerrard is to have a precautionary scan after picking up a knee problem at the Bridge. The latest from the FA this evening indicates that Gerrard will be fit to win his 100th cap, however.

Demba Ba has this afternoon withdrawn from the Senegal squad to face Niger on Wednesday. Although the forward seemed to have no problems in yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham and played the full 90 minutes, Alan Pardew revealed post-match that Ba was “struggling a little bit” with his recent shin complaint. Sammy Ameobi is another Newcastle man out of midweek action. He missed yesterday’s defeat to West Ham with a hamstring injury and has pulled out of contention for the England U21s.

City’s Gael Clichy has also made his excuses ahead of France’s game with Italy. The left-back picked up a back problem in yesterday’s win over Spurs. He is due to have painkilling injections on the injury this week according to City’s assistant David Platt.

Earlier this evening, QPR’s Ryan Nelsen became the latest “casualty” – he misses out on a lengthy flight to China for New Zealand’s friendly due to ankle and knee injuries according to the club.

Scotland have been hammered by a number of call-offs ahead of their trip to Luxembourg, with as many as seven Premier League players all handing in sick notes so far. Sunderland pair Phil Bardsley and Steven Fletcher have pulled out – the former missed the weekend trip to Everton with a hamstring injury, while Fletcher was replaced on 69 minutes at Goodison after sustaining an ankle problem.

Wigan’s Shaun Maloney has picked up an abdominal problem, while Charlie Adam and James Morrison – who both scored for Stoke and West Brom respectively last Saturday – have been ruled out with groin injuries. Villa’s Barry Bannan (knee) and QPR’s Jamie Mackie (ankle) are also ruled out for their country.

Northern Ireland are without the services of Jonny Evans, after the United centre-half withdrew with the groin injury which forced him out of the weekend win at Villa, while Everton’s Kevin Mirallas is out with a hamstring problem sustained midway through the first-half of Saturday’s win over Sunderland.

This leaves us fretting on those who will be active participants in the midweek matches with the Spaniards – Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla perhaps key concerns given that they face a lengthy trip to Panama for their friendly. Meanwhile, Luis Suarez will likely turn out for Uruguay in Poland, while Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Franco Di Santo (no really), all travel with Argentina to Saudi Arabia for their friendly; Carlos Tevez remains at home once again. There’s a whole host of Belgian stars making the trip to Romania, with Eden Hazard and Marouane Fellaini the headline acts in that one from a Fantasy perspective. It’s going to be a nervous few days.

As always, we’re recording all the knocks and scrapes over in the injuries and bans table and this will include any injuries that occur over the midweek matches. Then, later this week, we’ll be working through to clear them out as the latest team news arrives prior to the weekend.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just looking at a way of getting Silva in possibly...so...The only player i've not seen play this season out of my team is Michu...I know his points and goals have dried up for now (?) but is he playing well ?...or did he have a purple patch ?..has anybody watched him ?

Not watched Swansea too much. When I have he's always looked a threat, apart from his game against Stoke at the Britannia where he did f*** all.

He's effectively playing as a striker though so he is decent value as if Swansea score, he's likely to be involved.

I've found that Michu doesn't seem to get involved in the build up play as much (whether in midfield or upfront) as their other midfielders, instead occupying positions which he can score from or create a nuisance for the defence.

Saw him in the Saints game.Playing as main striker so OOP. His threat remains its just Swansea were inept going forward. This may be different in home games or if they pick up their form again.

He's playing as lone striker now, which I think might actually be worse for him. Id say 90-95% of goals scored by swans this year has been from midfield. Graham struggled miserably as the lone striker and as a fellow Michu striker I'm concerned. Anyone else thinking similar?

That's a very good pt, I hadn't thought of that. I'd taken it as a given that playing up front made him virtually indispensable, given his price. But you're right, Graham also did nothing when up front on is own

It's exactly what i've been pondering...dumped Graham and moved Michu up and the goals and assists dried up...That's fine if he looks like he's gonna pick up but if he's like a fish out of water i may ditch him and come back later.....Basically sounds like the same job as Torres...make a nuisance of yourself while the goals fly in from midfield...

I have the same problem, except with stoke defense.

I'm leaning towards spread the risk, but I also have the case to double up and play Demel because I'm not sure if Defoe will get decent minutes.

      Will Demel play?

I'd do neither, but if you have Shawcross and don't have a free transfer, then play him.

I think it will be a low scoring encounter, I don't think Stoke will score but I'm not sure enough to double up on West Ham decence.

I'm going by the way, ticket came through today.

The Suarez-wagon could really end in tears...Can you imagine the anger and frustration on here if he hits the crossbar/side-netting 10 times this weekend and picks up a yellow for a trampling into someone?

            I'll give you a few reasons why i don't think that'll happen:

            1. Martinez likes to park the bus in difficult away games and Wigan are very good at doing it (0-1 at Old Trafford sticks in the mind)
            2. On the weekend Suarez pushed Ivanovic to score the point blank header, and the officials are likely to be that much stricter with him in the next match
            3. Liverpool are not very good

    Alright everyone?

I just cant seem to catch a break. Thought I was in for a huge week...53 after a pitiful 3bps for berbs and 2 for Baines. RVP captain meh.

I am stuck with no money to shift Pienaar out, unless I bring in a Morrisson or maybe Nolan. I am already down to one big hitter in midfield, in Silva, who I in fact just brought in last night for Cazorla. Did Silva and Suarez in for Caz and Tevez, and I feel good about that at least.

I started this week 14th in my league and ended this week 14th in my league. 🙁

Losing faith at the moment. Those who didn't have a great week/team, had Fellaini and some even captained him. Two people brought him in for the week AND captained him too. Leader captained Suarez.

I feel like I have a great squad and a bright short term future, but i cant seem to outgun people at the moment. My rank is SHOCKING....600k. I am officially a lost soul (and i take this crap farrrrrrr too seriously).

Have a peek at my team and give me a pat on the back please fellas...cheers.

p.s HBA and Pienaar have to go, but not before there fixtures take a turn.

Not as if you have a bad team or anything, but I think that midfield is slightly inconsistent (Caz, although I'm keeping him still, HBA and Pienaar who you want rid of). Just other people seem to be outperforming them in their respective teams.

Pienaar is playing well at the mo and was unlucky with sending off etc..HBA has been a little flat but is a quality player and newcastles fixtures over next 5 are very inviting still.

If i get 2 fts anytime soon ill be upgrading to Fellaini and shifting HBA for Michu or Nolan. Enough weeks have passed by with Pienaar and HBA not doing sh#t for me.

well, not bad on paper but if you want to outgun your opponents like you say..you need to be a little different..A wild switch on Sessegnon to regain the form of last season perhaps.. He was a template player for a while. Sunderland after Fulham away have west brom home, qpr home, norwich away and then double header gameweek. He could be the template man again very soon.

Never done a -8 before, but could this be worth it?

    Crouch > Suarez
    Pienaar > Fellaini
    Bale > Ramirez

Top 8 would be RVP/Suarez/Ba with Cazorla/Mata/Fellaini and then Ramirez and Sterling rotating nicely each week.

    Thoughts appreciated!

0.8 off the top of my head, maybe slightly less.

Will be looking to ship Taarabt out in a couple of weeks, he was a short-term differential who hasn't differentiated himself. He looked lively in the last two games though.

So – unlimited cash, which 3 strikers?
Struggling to see beyond RVP, Suarez and Berbatov for the time being?
Tevez & Kun seem too hit and miss, Rooney and Torres off form, Arsenal too inconsistent.

I'd go RVP, Suarez and Ba / Berba, difficult to decide on the last 2. I have Ba, he has much better fixtures right now (although Berba seems able to score in any game really).

Two possible concerns are Bale has a good history in the derby, so he could do something. Also Nolan's fixtures, although he seems like he could score anywhere.

aye...Chelsea only said "weeks not months"...not sure how long that is really...I thought he looked the most likely defender to score in the entire prem whilst Terry was out...in fact he did...great defender...

Well Luiz was injured this week and they chose to start Iva instead of cahill. So I think he might be rotated very slightly (only think he'll miss 1/2).

Do you think Cech ➡ Gazzaniga

Ben Arfa ➡ Silva for -4 is a good or a bad move:?:

Silva is not the sort of player I would take a 4pt hit on. He rarely gets big scores which justify 4 pt hits and Cech could keep and cleanie and gazzinga never will.

Bad IMO, every chance Boruc will return. The investigation that saw him dropped has been concluded and Gazza did not exactly cover himself in glory for the Swans equaliser.

unless you plan on using the other 2 Stoke spots. It's rotation proof. But Ruddy is a great option. Or you could get Boruc?

I'd save it. Could consider Cazorla --> Mata if funds allow it (not sure what you bought Caz for). I'd look at shipping out Lambert soon though, maybe slowly work it round / use a 4 point hit to get Ba / Suarez.

as a young kid, i ran up a big phone bill calling the Times(think it was the times) fantasy football hotline to make transfers..Parents were raging and made me empty my bank account to pay for it..In that comp, you had scottish and english teams and i had Marco Negri in my side who scored over 30 goals by November..A hatrick then got you 10 bonus points too and 20 points for a goalie scoring..Happy memories!
