The Watchlist – David Silva

Following a three-match absence through injury, David Silva arrived back in the nick of time for Manchester City’s Gameweek 11 home clash with Spurs last weekend, giving his team a much needed fillip and Fantasy managers a reminder of his sublime talent.

As the game looked to be stuttering to a 1-1 draw it took an 87th minute spark of genius from Silva to win the match, as he brilliantly exchanged passes with substitute Edin Dzeko and his final, killer ball to the Bosnian was duly slammed home. In addition to the assist, Silva also received two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts in turning the game around and accrued a modest but significant seven-point total to herald a welcome top-flight return.

Since his opening day penalty miss at home to Southampton and subsequent 71st minute substitution Silva has struggled to recapture the stunning 2011/12 form that saw him rack up a total of 184 points. With just two assists to his name prior to Gameweek 11 it was clear that injury and fatigue, from a summer helping Spain win Euro 2012, were in danger of scuppering his third season in the English top flight. Two substitute cameos in his first four matches and only 90 minutes on three occasions so far this season have prompted managers to discard him in their droves and has seen his price plummet from 10.0 to just 9.3 in the FPL game. In the Sky Sports game, where no such price market exists, he is still the top priced midfielder at 9.0.

Until Sunday’s return, he had become something of a forgotten man for Fantasy managers, owned by only 4.6% of managers in the FPL game and 6.59% in the Sky game. It is a situation that is set to change over the coming weeks, however, as Silva seems certain for starts and is clearly re-energised from his short lay-off.

Silva also looks to be a key player among the ranks of premium priced midfielders for Gameweek 12, in which Man City host Aston Villa. In comparison to his Spanish countrymen Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla, he has not been selected to endure the international side’s gruelling 28-hour round trip for an away friendly with Panama and is primed to delight those managers who have recruited him this week.

Following the Aston Villa game though fixtures are not ideal for Man City (che, wig, EVE, MAN, new), but as arguably the key player in a team vying to retain the Premier League title, tricky opponents should not cause too much concern for Silva. His return is not only ideal for City, it also affords the opportunity to shake up our five-man midfields with a bona fide top Fantasy performer for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Mata, Cazorla, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard in the premium bracket.

    almost set my mind to do

    Cazorla - > Silva
    Mata -> Valencia

    Not so keen on the Mata transfer, but I think that Mata will be coming from a tiring trip and the fixtures ahead isn't so great too. I might be wrong though....

      I hope you're wrong. Mata is looking the bee's bollocks, Chelsea will keep scoring regardless of fixtures and I reckon he'll be involved in a lot of the goals. Valencia may come good, but he's a little lightweight in comparison.

    Next week Baines and Nolan > Silva and Cameron? Baines out is a week before it would be in an ideal world but need the funds for the nolan change.

        Fair point about the Reading double. Better 4.0 def for Gorkss? Who is a better budget rotation option with Beg?

              With Suarez and Sterling as good options for Liverpool Stevie G gets overlooked but he could be a great option, on most set pieces and pens, he just isn't as advanced as you would hope.

                Would be a good differential alright but I don't think he's the source of points he used to be. Sterling is too good value to ignore and 2 pool mids would be overkill.

      I'm in exactly the same scenario. I've risen up quite high recently by taking no hits, took a few early season. Hypothetically a likely scenario is Caz to get 2 pts, Silva 1 assist 5 pts, that's a net -1 diff. There are more scenarios where Caz beats Silva(-4). I'm waiting till next week. Besides Cazorla could easily out score Silva

            Already designed that and merked every team in the world playing it with Barcelona
            Definitely the best.

            Also designed a pretty tight counterattacking 4-2-3-1.

            Interestingly this 3-3-1-3 I designed is pretty much the only formation I can defend with against a 4-1-2-1-2. Clogs up the centre.

      looks ok for this week, but I'd be looking to move Fellaini and Pienaar on soon.

      I'd also consider dumping Ridge, he hasn't shown the attacking potential that we expected from him IMO.

      Yep, and also Norwich are keeping clean sheets all of a sudden. I'm thinking I might do the same, I love a differential captain.

        Norwich will not keep a clean sheet this weekend. If RVP does have a knock he could be benched to give Hernandez a start I suppose.

      Nah dude, youre top 25k so youre doing a hell of a lot right.
      2-3 transfers max is all I'd do with that team in the nxt 2 weeks. Pienaar's be my first casualty, you may as well keep Jelavic now for the 12 pt haul he's due, the way Everton are playing its coming soon.
      A stoke and WB defender should sort you for defensive rotation...

    I'm playing 3-5-2 every week so going for big hitting midfield.

    Jaask (Bego)
    Rafael - Baine - McCartney (Wilson - Hangeland)
    Fellaini - Michu - Cazorla - Bale - Mata
    Berba - Ba - (Lambert)

    I can do Michu to Silva by downgrading Hangeland to Morrison.

    I'll probably wait until just before any price changes but what do you reckon?

    Thinking of taking a risk after this gameweek and swapping Berba and Mata for Rooney and A.Johnson.

    Already have RVP so will be doubling up on Utd forwards and covering Sunderland's good fixtures /DGW plus clearing a Chelsea player for their upcoming blank.

    I know its a risky strategy but think Rooney and Johnson are due points and those 4/5 GW's look ideal for them. Happy with the rest of my team so can fix it back up when these fixtures pass.

    Good idea/bad idea?!

        I know but its Rooney I'd be doing it for really, Johnson just a mid price midfielder that might spark and has DGW.

        Already have Baines, Bale, Saurez and RVP as season keepers 🙂 If I include Mata and Berba on that list too I won't have any flexibility left. Maybe thats a good thing but... Rooney...

        Berba is away to Stoke and Chelsea and home to TOTT and in the same 3 weeks Rooney is home to QPR, West Ham and away to Reading.

        Rooney should score a lot more than Berbs in those games but whether it would be worth all the upheavel in my team and losing Mata I'm not sure.

      Wouldnt do anything there. save the transfer. you could be looking at suspensions for the next gameweek so the extra transfer might come in handy.

        Yeah that's the problem. All 3 of them getting booked would make it tricky. I don't want to keep relying on Davies to get me anything so hopefully Demel will play some part. Stoke at home is a gimme 🙂

        Seconded! Although with EFC's fixtures stiffening I would look at that transfer in a couple weeks. He's bound to be booked sooner than later (and I've got him)

          His fantasy returns have been good but hasn't actually ran rampant at Anfield at all yet this season. I think he will once Liverpool come up against there next open defence (ala Norwich earlier this year). Hopefuly Wigan will play an open game on Saturday.

            I would love it if he did 🙂

            A booking and the customary 50 or so near misses is more likely...

          Maybe they haven't had one without him on the pitch but who has taken pens with their previous clubs? I was wondering if Michu might be on them, that's all.

          Hernandez wouldn't have ever taken any at Valencia would he?

          Michu could be in with a shout. Some of those goals at Rayo must have been pens?

    Hi guys, i have Tevez RVP & Berba as my front 3. 0 in bank but have 2 free transfers. Would you put Suarez in? Am i mad not to?

    Begovic (Mccarthy)

    Baines Evans Nelsen (Clyne & Cuellar)

    Sterling Mata Bale Fellaini (Lallana)

    Tevez RVP Berbatov

      but who to downgrade? Your team is nicely balanced as is. I think Suarez is a better option at the mo, but not at the expense of hurting your midfield. Lallana to Maloney is an option, but I like Lallana and would consider playing him over sterling this week.

    Any strong thoughts on a Giroud transfer?

    He's getting a lot of chances and 30pts in his last 5 games is pretty good.

    I havent seen enough Arsenal games to know anything about his overall game tho, what say Arsenal fans?

      If he starts to gel with Walcott it could be a really productive partnership. He makes good dangerous runs, and is a real threat in the air. His feet have been letting him down, but he just hasn't been getting decent enough service, even from Caz. It'd be a but of a punt, as Arsenal have been looking a shadow of their former selves recently. I'd wait until things become a bit clearer with so many other good options out there.

      Walcott may be slightly less damaging punt.

    Hi,

    Current team -

    Begovic, Jaask
    Ivan, Baines, Demel, Nelson, Ben Davies
    Mata, Cazorla, Walters, Pienaar, Sterling
    RVP, Tevez, Lambert
    2 Frees, 1m in bank

    How does this sound -
    Lambert -> Giroud
    Cazorla -> Silva/Valencia
    Walters -> Maloney (assuming hes fit)
    For a 4 point hit. Note - Maloney would be benched this week anyway.

    then next week -

    Tevez -> Fletcher
    Pienaar -> Silva/Valencia

    sound good? Would leave me with a nicely balanced team i feel....
