Sky Sports Focus

Swiftly on the heels of this week’s glance at our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community, it’s now time to turn our attentions to our second supported league, with the Sky Sports game coming into focus. As always, we list our top managers, assess the transfer trends and this week report back on those offering the best value amongst the player list…

The Scout League

Charles Mouzon continues to reign in the Scout League – his “Geordie Boys” are holding off Chris Tuck’s “Vuvuzela Symphony” by six points going into this weekend, with Paul Hennessey still sits snugly in third spot; his “Hennessey’s Heroes” are some 17 points off the top now.

Hennessey also keeps the company of two others tied on 731. Tony Senior and Lewis Nicklen both ensure that we have five names in the overall top 20 in this game. In the race for the £25k top prize, Charles Mouzon is now 35 points off the chase, closing the gap from last week as we edge towards the hectic Christmas programme. Our top five stretched their lead in the Private League rankings this week, we now sit a full 22 points ahead.

A reminder that if you’re playing the Sky Sports game and have yet to join our league, you can sign up to the FFScout League with this Pin: 8004519. We have a home cinema system, worth £600, available to the winner.

Market Forces

Mirroring this week’s popularity in the FPL transfer market, Luis Suarez dominates the transfers in this week: the Liverpool man has been party to almost 38% of the trades made in the last seven days, a stat that is no doubt fueled by shock sales of Robin Van Persie at the other end of the spectrum. The Dutchman was moved on by over 20% of his owners this week off the back of his blank at Carrow Road; only West Brom’s injured stopper, Ben Foster, suffered more trades out.

Bizarrely, over 20% of Sky Sports managers brought in Marouane Fellaini this week, despite his impending ban this weekend for the Norwich clash at Goodison. Goalkeepers remain a popular trade, with both Asmir Begovic and John Ruddy enjoying heavy traffic this week, picking up Ben Foster’s owners off the back of their recent form.

Both Ruddy (9.13 per million) and Begovic (9.02 per million) have offered oustanding value of late but still trail West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen in that respect for the season as a whole. The Hammers keeper has returned 9.21 points per million thus far.

A West Ham man is also top of the defender value rankings. Joey O’Brien’s goal in the 1-1 with Stoke means that he has now offered 10.52 points per million so far this term, with team-mate Winston Reid clocking up 10.25 in second. Given the Hammers schedule of fixtures, it seems unlikely that that pairing can go on delivering strong returns in the short-term, however.

In midfield, Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla is now, pound for points, the top midfielder on offer. The Spaniard has delivered 13.88 points per million so far in his first season in the top flight. The likes of Fellaini, Michu and Raheem Sterling rank behind him, all presenting outstanding returns for their price tags.

Up front, the value is more limited but Luis Suarez’s recent form has seen him ascend to the top of the rankings. The Uruguayan has delivered 9.79 points per million going into the weekend, comfortably ahead of Demba Ba in second on 8.44.

The Fantasy Football Club

The cheeky Dennis Wise will scurry into the studio for tonight’s episode Fantasy Football Club, no doubt with plenty to say on Rafa’s appointment at Chelsea. Tonight also sees the draw for the Qualifying Round of the Fantasy Football Club Cup apparently – intriguing. Join Fenners and Merse from 10pm tonight on Sky Sports One.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Cheers guys.

Thinking of downgrading Sterling for GW14 to Puncheon and getting in Cuellar for Nelson/Clyne, as I now have Suarez.

Also pondering Berb -> Giroud/Tevez and downgrading one of my 3 bighitters in MF.

      Any thoughts on these moves?

Bit stumped this week. 2 FT's 0.1 in the bank. Anyone care to offer any ideas?

I'd like Mata/Silva/Cazorla in soon but I don't want to lose Bale or Valencia this week. I'm considering something dull like Hughes > Shorey/Turner this week. Possibly lose Baines next week and upgrade Lallana.

    Begovic | Gazz
    Baines | Simpson | Cuellar | Hughes | McCartney
    Valencia | Bale | Pienaar | Lallana | Sterling
    RVP | Tevez | Ba

I just did an "AUTOSELECT" on transfers for my entire team and it gave me the following:-

    Ruddy - Jussi
    Enrique - Garrido - O'Brien - Gorkss - Shawcross
    Santi - Silva - Johnson - Bale - Hernandez
    Suarez - Tevez - Berbatov

I must say that's better than anything I could come up with after staring at the game for days.

Might be time to stop worrying and just let the computer play the game for me.

Slightly more speculative now but once Harry takes over at QPR after United (yep I went and assumed that) I fancy Hoilett will be a prospect. Don't see great things for Taarabt given Harry's history with him. Hoilett could either play in the hole as he has now or on the wing, either position was full of points in Harry's Spurs. He loves pace down the wings and quick attacks.

    Dear FantasyFootballScout and frequent poster's

Since reading RMT's the last few weeks and players form etc amongst the articles my ranking has some what fallen so i decided to stop readingarticles on here and swapped Fellaini > Walcott Monday.................More fool me. Oh on a plus side every player i seem to take out scores, Long and Bale amongst a few.

Just to give people a heads up i plan on taking Jelavic out after this GW so i would strongly advise every fantasy owner to invest as he will probably bag a 100000000000000 goals.

    Yours Faithfully

*More on Baines* **Sorry to everyone who's really bored of this topic**

I think what I’m struggling with is two questions:

    1) Should I be happy with his recent returns?
    2) If not, is there any real reason to expect that they will improve?

The answer to 2) seems definitely No for me. The fixtures get worse and the team and his role won't change.

But I honestly don’t know how I should answer 1). I don't have enough experience of the game to make this call. What do veterans say?

Everyone seems to say that his attacking returns is why we bought him and clean sheets are just a bonus. I'm honestly gonna give him his last chance vs NOR then see from there.

I think you've every right to be displeased with his returns. Fact of the matter is you won't get a lot of backing making a decision to sell Baines on here. Putting it plainly, selling him will allow you to balance your defence out with less ubers, give you alternative differentials and allow you to bolster your attack with cash. It gives you the flexibility to change your strategic FPL plan in the long run. Keep Baines and you've got a hell of an asset but maybe will be blocked from other avenues worth exploring.

      1) No
      2) People that are into stats and suchlike say that he's still creating as many chances as he was when he was scoring well, it's just that they're not being converted. You might even say that he's due a few assists...

I'm pretty veteran, and I'm keeping.

In my opinion, it's a similar situation to Cazorla. The stats all said that he should be returning higher points as he was creating chances etc. I had patience with him and it worked out last weekend so gona persevere with Baines and hope he comes good too

It's certainly true that I've been burned by lack of patience. Though in the case of Cazorla, his biggest haul came when his stats took a nosedive, which is aggravating 🙂

Here's something; Baines is 1 point off the top spot for total points from defenders. And the thing is, we knew he would be up there. You could probably get similar points from other defenders over the course of the season, but it's a question of picking them. Baines is just reliable.

Rotation versus big hitter. I think the gains from jumping on and off cheaper defenders with good runs of fixtures could easily outscore him by a distance. But yes, that's a bigger headache and less reliable.

I want to write a long exam, but exams are holding me back from such. It's a 50-50 right now, so if you are the more punt-ish person, you will trade him off. If you are patient, you will keep him despite the tough fixtures.

Won't read so much into the stats etc....Things turn very quickly here on ffs. Even a fluke goal this weekend, and he will suddenly become a 'season-keeper' then.

      1) You shouldn't be happy with his recent points hauls
      2) He takes pens, some free kicks and corners and is a bp magnet. There is no other defender like this in the game. He will be completely nailed on over Christmas which shouldn't be sniffed at. Further to this, I'd expect him to be the highest scoring defender on the game over the course of the season with approx 170 points. He'll pick up the points, it's just not always as we'd expect :). I remember a couple of years ago when he scored at Man City for example. All of that said, I'm considering ditching him after this GW until the January wildcard.

Pick the bones out of that one.

Ah yes, bonus points! Mark and Granville were saying on the Scoutcast they think the new bonus system favours attacking defenders. Like you say,we won't know when to expect the big points hauls, but that's actually the beauty of it. Play him week in/week out and never lose his points to the bench. We can always rotate the defenders around him, as I think defensive rotation is still a good strategy.

Definitely sunk to new levels of nerddom. On my crappy old laptop than can only run FIFA 2005, I've been playing with a formation editor to build a side designed to counter Barcelona's 4-1-2-1-2. I've ended up creating a 3-3-1-3 with Athletic Bilbao that drops back to 4-5-1 in defence. Three central midfielders. The games are nervous but I've kept a clean sheet against them for the first time!

The tactics are pretty simple, basically press them like mad and when I lose the ball I make my defensive midfielder run back as fast as possible to become the second center back. That doesn't go very well though, almost every goal I've conceded is when he's caught out of position.

The dumbest thing is that my single center back isn't even standing in the middle, he's standing off to the left waiting for the second center back who's sprinting backwards at 100 mph to arrive!! Some seriously embarrassing goals, it's not even playground stuff.

I loved the look of Sess last year and he has huge upside and talent. I just haven't gone for him myself because Brom are a stubbornly defensive team who defend deep and get blocks in - I think he's best on the break. His goal against Fulham came on the break, that said it was a wonderful shot that might have gone in against a packed defence.

Yes. Basically, it was a case of 3 games for Fellaini vs. 5 for Sess. If i am going to gamble, why not start now. And i just feel so much better playing 3-4-3 vs 4-3-3

I think Sess wins there. Almost tempting me now, stop dammit. I've got 3-4-3 with Mata Bale Nolan Sterling, I think I'm OK there, so resisting the urge to gamble.

Defoe. One more viable punt btw. Adebayor out for 3.

Would it not be better to swing it around a CB. With two CB/FB's on either side. If attacking down the Left the actual LB becomes an attacking winger.

Probably better if I show you what I'm doing as a diagram

          Defence:
          ............9
          7....6...10..8....11
          ...2....3....4....5

          Attack:

          ....7......9......11
          ...........10
          .....6.....4.....8
          .....2.....3....5

Should I do Felliani to Silva this week or keep the afro man for a few more games?

I thought long and hard about ditching Fellaini and banking the profit (got him at 6.9), cos of fixtures.
I've decided to keep for a while, not by choice, but because of other pressing matters.
If you have nothing better to do, I would consider it.
