Versus – Rooney and Van Persie

As Man United approach an eye-catching run of games which could potentially see Sir Alex Ferguson’s side rack up the Fantasy returns, Wayne Rooney has staked a strong claim for consideration after bagging a brace for the second Gameweek in succession. Rooney’s stock has suffered a significant drop this season due to the arrival of Robin Van Persie but as the campaign unfolds, he’s starting to look a real differential, with many Fantasy managers even considering both forwards for a run of games which sees the Red Devils welcome Sunderland, Newcastle and West Brom to Old Trafford, in addition to trips to Swansea and Wigan in the next five:

Can just make a team this week:

    Bego

    Mertesacker - Enrique - Nelson - Cuellar
    Michu - Fellaini - Sterling
    RVP - Suarez - Fletcher

    ! Foster - ! Mata - ! Lallana - ! Fonte

Is it worth a HIT (-4) to do:

A Mata TO Silva (bench Cuellar)
    B Cuellar TO Nastacic
    C Cuellar TO Caulker
    D Lallana TO Morrison
    E Other
    F No HIT

    Thanks for any advice.....head wrecked!

it's fine. if you only have 1 FT don't use it. If you have two maybe do something with Demel if he's still not going to be playing, but don't waste both.

Are we thinking Rafael is nailed on now? There were worries Jones and smalling could displace him at RB but he looks like the position is his now, doesn't he?

I'm making backup plans for Evans > Rafael if Evans is confirmed out.

Yes he is nailed on. Might get rested for maybe a game during Xmas, but he is undoubtedly and deservedly first choice now. Don't let anyone fool you. Everyone thought he would be dropped v City due to being subbed off at 30mins the game prior. That's because he IS first choice that he was subbed, to ensure Utd had their starting right back available for the biggest game in the EPL fixture list.

I assume you mean 'first choice goalkeeper', as their first goalkeeper was most likely back in 1885.
Gazzinga is the current first choice keeper, but he was injured last weekend, so Davis played. I'd avoid bringing in either, tbh, as they have a blank this week.

Pondering Suarez vs Rooney (I already have RVP).

Suarez is at home to villa this weekend, but is this as easy a fixture as it first looks? Last season Lambert got the better of Rodgers tactically in both Norwich-Swansea matches (Norwich won both) and I can see him doing a number on Liverpool too. Potential for goals for both teams though.

Sunderland are awful at the moment, but they can park the bus quite well sometimes, so the Utd game this weekend might be low scoring. I don't know, what do Sunderland fans think about this match?

Looking further ahead, both Liverpool and Utd have 3 home games in the next 5. But in the weird/difficult post-Christmas fixtures (weeks 19 and 20, 26th and 29th Dec) Suarez is away at Stoke and QPR while Rooney is at home to Newcastle and WBA, both teams struggling at the mo. That is almost enough to swing it for me.

I still don't understand how the UK doesn't get all the games on TV?

Here in Singapore I pay about £25 a month and every game is shown live (on multiple channels) when more than one game is on.

Sunderland Reading will be on ESPN.

The Saturday 3 O'clock matches are the only ones not shown on any channel, and that is so that it does not compete with lower league ticket sales. Encourage people to go outside and support their local team at the actual ground.

It's really not that surprising. The clubs needs to fill their stadiums and they are not going to do that if every game is on Sky. Living in Singapore means you're not going to be getting to the games any time soon and they can tap into the Eastern market by showing you all the games.

    Holt 14
    Rooney 12
    Rodallega 7
    Van Persie 6
    Jelavic 6
    Tevez 6
    Cisse 5
    Vellios 4

The only strikers that scored this week

Torres (Blank next week, lack of faith from FPL managers)
    Holt (Norwich...not convincing enough)
    Rodallega (He's no Berbatov)
Jelavic (Why buy him when you have Fellaini)
    Tevez (rotation risk)
    Cisse (Plays for QPR)
    Velios (What?)

So basically you only have RVP and Rooney who anyone would be interested in. Hence why everyone thinks a double up is THE best idea ever this week as SURELY every week is going to be like this for the next 5/6 weeks. This is classic knee-jerking in my opinion.

No, as Peppin said in the last page, they are the highest scoring striker pair since GW7. Took this week's game to convince people. Risky but good till Jan WC. Not knee jerking I think.

Some how Kagawa is going to get back in the team, and its going to ruin the partnership one way or another. The main point is that whats happened since GW7 proves nothing about the future.

Don't get that argument he'd be 9th in list of midfielders and all above him cost more apart from Nolan whose form has turned to crap. And thats after baines loss of value.

Surely to maximize your score you have to spread your budget and risk across the team, not just buy the best two players in the game. And that is assuming Rooney and rvp will be the two top players in the game which is highly unlikely IMO.

Bassong would also be the 9th best midfielder, but guess what he is cheaper than Baines and only has two points less. This says far more about the relative value of different areas of the team rather than about Baines. Compare like for like.

Bassong has scored 3 goals in the last 4 games though, he is almost literally on fire and clearly this run will end. Baines has been disappointing by most peoples reckoning and is still 2pts off being the best defender.

Both fair enough but what if utd stop scoring 3 or more goals a game or Rooney and rvp aren't scoring the goals. And which of the two are you going to pick as captain?

Next few fixtures look good so now is the time if you're going to do it but I don't expect them to be getting 20pts between them every week which is what people will be expecting.

Basically everyone will be moaning continuously about one of them letting them down. It's enough to have an RVP fail...imagine having 25.6m invested in both and they both failed?

Can you imagine the anger, frustration and feeling of humiliation? Man Utd have shown they are prone to the odd bad performance and have struggled to score against some teams (West Ham/Norwich/Everton) Who is to say they won't have the same problems over xmas? It's a massive gamble to go for both imo.

Not saying they won't warrant inclusion individually but I'd rather spread the risk in other teams. Loss of form of either or other players in the utd team for that matter could affect them both.

Also personally I think rvp will outscore Rooney significantly but could be wrong. Guess we'll have to see who is right in the coming weeks, I look forward to watching utd play if you're all correct 🙂

What you are effectively saying is Rvp and Rooney will be the top two scoring strikers for the next few weeks. Manutd can only score a fixed amount of goals and we think spending that amount of money on a single team is not good. When there are alternatives like Suarez , Ba who can score just as many points as any one of those two. Not to mention the price of those two.

michu, fellaini and puncheon/sterling do provide great value but is it really worth having rooney at the expense of a mata, bale, santi or silva when you already have RVP. i personally don't think so..

We are restricted by the fact we have to bnch one of out front 8. By getting Mata over Rooney, you'd be leaving a 5m player rotting on the bench. Wasted value imo, turn it into rotation and spend the money on players you start every game.

What's wrong with a 5m player rotting on the bench? Having Rooney and RVP is wasted value if you look at their price tags and the alternatives. You also lose entire access to another good teams attack in Chelsea by going with this idea. It's probably easier for you because you are a Man Utd fan to double up I'd imagine.

Since when is getting in a proven big hitting forward in great form knee-jerking? He has shown in the past he tends to go on scoring streaks so in the lead up to the Jan WC, it looks like a brilliant options. Also there are very few mid-priced forwards doing the business currently, but plenty of mid priced mids like Michu and Fellaini where the savings can be made.

I just don't believe...going by previous results...that having Rooney AND RVP is the right plan. Last 2 weeks...ok it's been gold. But you are still limiting yourself by spending this much in attack. In my honest opinion a better tactic is to go with one of them and stick by your decision. If you believe Rooney will rival and outscore RVP then buy Rooney and reap the rewards of having a differential.

Not trying to convince anyone of anything. Just putting perspective on things. What I've posted above is exactly why people want to have double Man Utd strikers. In the hope that most weeks will be like this and that other candidates just aren't up to the task...Therefore splurge your money on two strikers in the same team.

quite easily if they have played the transfers...a lot of players will have a team value of between 108.0 and 110.0...even higher...but they'll mostly be way behind and relying on the second half of the season...

I have Gorkss in defense, enough said.......but yeah okay, seems like it's well doable.

Mind you if Silva, Bale, Mata, Cazorla also starting kicking in big time, will make it interesting...

Does anyone think that Dempsey will be a viable option once everyone is fit at Spurs?

If AVB is serious about playing 442 then surely it would be Demps to drop out.

Tempted to bring him in for Walcott

AVB says he sees Demps as a striker but I agree he's not 100% nailed on. From what I've seen of Ade though he's been dreadful.

Yeah not a Spurs fan, but living in the area i've seen a lot of them and never thought much of Ade.

I think Demps recent form has bought him some time in the team, but then AVB doesn't seem to care about form when it comes to picking his XI

Hi All. Any suggestions on this team as we prepare for the holiday crush of matches?

    Begovic, (Gazzaniga),
    Mertesacker, Rafael, Caulker, Nelsen, (Gunter),
    Silva, Nolan, Sterling, (Mata, Britton)
    Suarez, RVP, Rooney

I will be so annoyed when the team sheets come out and Fletcher is not in sight. Those who captained him all seem to have VC that did something, and first subs with 5-10 points. Just the sort of luck that NEVER comes my way

Can someone pls shed some light on the Norwich mids (i.e what are their positions on the pitch)?

Snodgrass, Pilkington, Johnson and Hoolahan all seem to share the points between them, so is the argument then to get the cheapest one?

It's a nice midfield but it doesn't give you any flexibility if you suddenly want the likes of Mata, Bale, Silva or Cazorla.

Not if you want more than one of them, no (there is budget to have one heavy hitter). It's a bet that michu and Fellaini are heavy hitters, basically

As trying to avoid that 😆

The timing couldn't have been sharper. Just when you might want to free up funds by downgrading to Puncheon he doesn't have a fixture.

Looking at this 'template' my only regret is not getting some earlier. I got Sterling very early (GW3 I think), Puncheon early, got Michu in early (GW2) sold for some bad fixtures and got punished but got him back last week only. Fellaini I waited so long because I had pienaar. Never again.

I'm even thinking Giroud + Lallana –> Rooney + Puncheon (-4) 😆 even though he doesn't have a fixture. Problem is I will have 0 left in the bank and Rooney is bound to rise so I can't do it for free... 😐

Hmmmmm. There must be a better way. I think in practice Puncheon will not be both in your team and scoring too often. There must be an alternative with a decent fixture this week at a similar price.

Mata and Torres seem to play well off each other, so maybe they're in with a chance of knocking the ManU Striker-Midfielder-in-the-hole + Striker pair off its current pedestal? 😉

far from crazy, torres could ease score as much points as mata if form continues. Plus pens are on him it seems. so really swapping puncheon for the fondou. cant see anything wrong with that

        Enrique; Rafael; Mertesacker; Shorey; Davies
